Having returned to Toad Town, Mario and Goombario find their way to the first Star Spirit’s location blocked by a handful of Toads wearing black. As they search for help, they encounter a friendly wizard living in a spinning house who helps reveal the Toads as the Koopa Bros., minions of Bowser working against Mario.
This wizard is Merlon, who has an entire family living in the area ready and willing to give Mario some assistance. He and his family would appear regularly throughout the first three Paper Mario games, giving Mario hints to his next path in the first game, upgrading his companions in the second, and acting as his primary mentor in the third.
As a fighter, Merlon will only be the first color swap, with Merlee, Merluvlee, Merle, Merlow, Nolrem, and Merlumina filling up the rest. As a whole, they will be slow, with a lot of skill in magical attacks but not great in physical. Their moves will pull from across the series and the abilities of all family members.
