Although Sir Grodus fancies himself the true villain behind the scheme, we soon find that even he is being manipulated by a trio of shadowy witches the X-Nauts allied themselves with in order to pull off this scheme.
These are the Shadow Sirens: Beldam, Marilyn, and Vivian. These three sisters would crop up again and again throughout the game, acting as mini-bosses and rivals to the main party, the youngest sister Vivian eventually breaking herself away from her abusive older sisters to join Mario in the fight against them. They serve the Shadow Queen, the ancient evil that lurks behind the door Sir Grodus wishes to open.
As fighters, they will be perpetually attached to the ground by their ghostly tails, though they will be able to jump and move around just fine. Vivian will take the first color swap, with Marilyn and Beldam as the next two. Their greatest strength will be in defense, though they will have strong magical attacks pulling from Vivian’s abilities as a party member and the trio’s various boss fights.
