After making it past a first level full of Goombas and Koopa Troopas, players of the original Super Mario Bros. game will come to a set of pipes. Now, they will know from experience that they might be able to descend through these pipes to find some secrets and treasure, so they will likely leap at the chance. That leap might cost them, however, as one of the pipes suddenly spawns a man-eating plant with a mouth full of teeth.
This is a Piranha Plant. Though most will recognize them for hanging out inside of pipes and biting anyone who comes near, a seasoned gamer will know they are more than capable of spitting both fireballs and poison clouds, move around on nubby little feet of their own, use their breath to make spike balls float in mid-air, and spawn baby plants called Nippers, among other things. They would see an extensive career through the Mario series, including of all things a playable appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
As a player, they will be light and quick, moving around on their little feet while still hiding inside a section of pipe. They will also be surprisingly strong, with biting attacks that tend to deal a good bit of damage, with some reasonable defense when tucked inside their pipes. Their moves will pull from all over the Mario games, hearkening back to all the myriad variations seen throughout the series.
