Carrying on your first adventure into the Mushroom Kingdom, you will soon come to the fourth world in your journey, where you will be faced with a particularly annoying enemy: a small, bespectacled Koopa riding a cloud that follows you around everywhere and drops bright red spike balls on your head.
This is the Lakitu, and those spike balls he throws will soon open up and crawl across the ground as Spinies. They are Bowser’s aerial bombers, and they will be a thorn in your side until you can get yourself up high enough to take them out and steal their cloud. Though they continue this role frequently in later games, many members of their race have found consistent work as cameramen and referees in various sporting events, owing to their ability to float away from the action quickly. One, by the name of Lakilester, has even defected from Bowser’s forces and become a staunch companion of Mario.
In game, the Lakitu will be floaty, with strong recovery abilities to make up for their lack of weight. They will be experts in projectile warfare, and their Spinies, once thrown, will act much like Pikmin, following their Lakitu’s commands and becoming a nuisance to those around them. Their moves will largely focus on this Spiny projectile combat, though will pull some from their jobs as referees and occasionally will be known to fire lightning from their clouds.
