Legend of Zelda 3D Roster

SUPER SMASH BROS. UNIVERSE

3D LEGEND OF ZELDA

Since we're splitting the roster into all characters originating from a 2D top-down game, all characters from 3D games, and all characters from the Breath of the Wild/Age of Calamity world, here's our 3D rosters:

That should take care of that one! Next up, the Breath of the Wild roster!

*Please note, I have chosen to place Impa here because it is her first in-game appearance, rather than just being mentioned in a booklet. (Though, technically she did appear in some cutscenes of the CDi games, but I am choosing to ignore that for the time being).

Legend of Zelda 2D Roster

SUPER SMASH BROS. UNIVERSE

2D LEGEND OF ZELDA

So, my general rule of thumb is basically that I will never allow a roster to exceed one hundred fighters before splitting it if I can help it (we'll deal with Pokemon when we come to it). Boy, did we pass it. So, seeing as we have so many fighters from Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity, my first thought was to break them off into their own. However, that still didn't do the trick and left Zelda Proper with 103 remaining fighters. So, we're going to get a little experimental today, and split our main roster into all those characters that debuted in a top-down 2D game, and all characters that debuted in a 3D game. It makes sense to me. They do almost feel like two different series at times, so let's do it!

1.       Link

2.       Dark Link

3.       Four Links

4.       Ravio

5.       The Youth

6.       Princess Zelda

7.       Princess Hilda

8.       Toon Zelda

9.       Ezlo

10.   Minish/Picori

11.   Din

12.   Nayru

13.   Marin

14.   Ralph

15.   Linebeck

16.   Alfonzo

17.   Madame Couture

18.   Yves

19.   Subrosian

20.   Monkey

21.   Sahasrahla

22.   Oshus & Ciela

23.   Old Man

24.   Hylian Soldier

25.   Great Fairy

26.   Ganon

27.   Yuga

28.   Agahnim

29.   Nightmare

30.   Onox

31.   Veran

32.   Vaati

33.   Bellum

34.   Chancellor Cole & Malladus

35.   Lady Maud

36.   Byrne

37.   Moblin

38.   Octorok

39.   Stalfos

40.   Darknut

41.   Wizzrobe

42.   Poe

43.   Vire/Keese

44.   Armos

45.   Thunderbird

46.   Lynel

47.   Hinox

48.   Gohma

49.   Dodongo

50.   Manhandla

And there we go! Almost a full 50/50 split. I think it works. Next, let's cover the 3D games roster!

Character Sheet: Sooga

SOOGA

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Today, we finish off our list with Sooga, a Yiga Clan blademaster and right hand man of Master Kohga, an original character to Age of Calamity who acts as a boss frequently throughout the game, and seems to give his life to save Master Kohga when their clan is betrayed by Astor. He is added as a DLC playable character thanks to his popularity as a character.

Most of his moveset is based on the twin blades he wields, with which he can perform a cross slash, a double thrust, a spin, a quick flurry, and a counter. He can also fly into a rage mode, throw exploding kunai, drop a Kohga stature out of nowhere, and slash hard enough to cut through a tornado. He can also summon a giant sword made out of metal with Magnesis.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Exploding Kunai

He will send out a series of Kunai as a swarm of projectiles, which will explode on contact, each blade dealing small damage.

Side B: Cross Slash

He will slash his two swords in an X-shape before him, hard enough to create a large X of light in the air before him that will move forward some distance and deal heavy damage and knockback.

Up B: Twin Blade Spin

He will perform a spinning move will his two blades that will carry him up into the air a little bit.

Down B: Kohga Statue

He will pull out a large statue of Master Kohga and slam it down onto the ground in front of him, dealing fairly heavy damage.

Final Smash: Magnesis Blade

He will activate his Magnesis rune, which will pull a bunch of metal together into a giant blade, which will then slash at one opponent multiple times before launching them.

Entrance: He will appear in a poof out of thin air.

Taunts: Up, he will spin his swords and place them back against his back. Side, he will cross his arms and look menacingly. Down, he will kneel as if addressing his master.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's finish up by updating our roster, or should I say, rosters?

Character Sheet: Manhandla

MANHANDLA

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Today, we cover a bit of an odd one. Manhandla has been around as a recurring boss since the very beginning, often portrayed as a giant plant with four mouths pointing in four different directions, forcing you to have to be careful how you approach it. I personally feel it reached its peak design in Four Swords, when each head had a different color and could only be attacked by the Link of that color. However, seeing it in Hyrule Warriors did awaken me to some of its hidden potential as a fighter.

Among the various moves of the boss, it can spew fireballs, spin really fast when it gets angry, fire seeds either as homing or rapid-fire projectiles, uproot itself from the ground and rampage, spew poison across the ground, and lash with its heads to bite and swallow opponents. It's also worth mentioning the boss Diababa from Twilight Princess bears a strong resemblance to it, but its bite and poison attacks are already accounted for, so . . . I think we've got enough.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Bite

Manhandla will lash out its heads and chomp down on anything standing nearby, swallowing them before spitting them out for a second. Uncertain if this will be just one head lashing in the forward direction, or all four heads lashing out in different directions. Also it should be noted that a gimmick for this fighter is that at 0% damage it will have all four heads active, but the more damage it takes, the less heads it will have, resulting in just one head past probably 100 or 200%. At which point, that could make a fun difference with this move, as at full health you can attack from four directions, but at higher damage, you will only attack in one.

Side B: Seed Shot

With a light tap, it will fire out seeds rapid-fire like bullets. With a longer tap though, it will instead spew out stronger targeting missile seeds.

Up B: Rage Spinout

It will get angry and spin really fast, lifting itself up into the air for a short distance like Link or Donkey Kong.

Down B: Poison Smog

It will spew a cloud of poisonous gas across the ground in front of it, damaging anyone who gets caught in it.

Final Smash: Big Manhandla

It will jump off the stage as the ground starts to rumble and a much bigger version of Manhandla bursts from the ground, its four heads lashing out and KOing everything in sight.

Entrance: It will burrow up out of the ground.

Taunts: Up, its four heads will reach up and sniff the air. Side, it will lower its head and the green crystal at its core will be exposed. Down, all four heads will laze around on the ground like they're tired.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we finish our list with the noble swordsman of the Yiga Clan, Sooga!

Character Sheet: Wizzro

WIZZRO

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

While the connection between Wizzro and Vaati is not nearly as clear and obvious as Cia and Volga, it is still a shadowy demonic being sealed away, who often wears a purple robe, with a single eye showing at certain times. I'd still be willing to bet he was supposed to be Vaati. He was just less further along in his moveset development, and so had more wiggle room to become more of a representative of ghostly or demonic enemies as a whole. With a name uncomfortably close to a recurring enemy type.

So, among his various moves, he can fire out ghostly orbs and a horizontal beam of spirit energy, he can move and teleport through pools of shadow, he can grab his opponents will Wallmasters that act as his hands, he can summon up demonic shadow beasts to pull his enemies into darkness, and he can set off dark explosions. I think there's more than enough here.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Spectral Beam

He will fire out his big horizontal beam in front of him. It can be moved around using the control stick.

Side B: Wallmaster

He will send out his Wallmaster Hand to grab an opponent and drag them toward him. The fighter will have to struggle to break free of its grip in order to get away.

Up B: Shadow Warp

He will disappear into a pool of shadow, reappearing in one of the other areas of the stage, preferably where there already is a shadow, though I don't know how feasible that would be.

Down B: Ghostly Orbs

He will spin and send out ghostly orbs around him that will detonate on contact.

Final Smash: Shadow Beasts

He will spread a wave of shadow across the ground as one-eyed shadow beasts leap up out of it, grabbing and devouring any players they catch and pulling them down to their KOs.

Entrance: His ring will lie on the ground and start to float as his body materializes.

Taunts: Up, his mouth will appear inside his cloak and he will start to laugh. Side, he will adjust his ring and admire it. Down, he will melt partially into shadow and look around.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an old boss enemy I've come to reconsider.

Character Sheet: Volga

VOLGA

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

What I'm pretty sure started as an Onox moveset (general character with a swinging weapon and dragon-based moves, including a full dragon form) became the original character Volga, a shapeshifting dragon living in the caves near Eldin Volcano recruited to serve Cia in her bid to overthrow Hyrule. Even without an Onox basis, he does serve as a representative to the various dragon-type enemies throughout the series, such as Volvagia and Argorok.

As a fighter, Volga has both a human and a dragon form. He wields a sword as a human, and can breathe fire as a dragon. He can perform partial transformations as well, sprouting wings to fly and turning his arm to a dragon's arm in order to claw his enemies. He can also call up an eruption of flames, and splash flames out from himself.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Dragon Fire

He will breathe searing hot fire from his mouth at the opponents ahead of him. This will function similarly to Bowser or Charizard, though I could see it dealing slightly more damage.

Side B: Dragon Claw

He will transform his left arm into a dragon's arm and slash forward, dealing heavy damage with one strike.

Up B: Dragon Wings

He will sprout his wings out of his back and take off into the air, flying upwards with multiple flaps.

Down B: Eruption

He will stab his sword into the ground and cause a burst of flames to erupt from it, similarly to Ike's move of the same name.

Final Smash: Volvagia

He will transform into the dragon Volvagia and sweep over the stage, breathing fire upon it and lashing with his head tails.

Entrance: He will swoop in as a dragon and drop to the ground in his human form.

Taunts: Up, he will breathe fire into the sky above him (this will damage). Side, he will lash out with his sword with a growl. Down, he will stab his sword into the ground and laugh menacingly.

Thanks for reading! Next up, his companion representing the darker, more demonic enemies of Hyrule.

Character Sheet: Astor

ASTOR

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Today, we cover Astor, the villain of Age of Calamity, a seer who prophesied the coming of Calamity Ganon, playing Hyrule and the Yiga Clan against each other in a scheme to actually bring the Calamity himself. I assume that in the prime timeline, he got away with his crimes scot-free, but in Calamity, after Terrako and the champion's descendants' intervention prevents Ganon from seizing control of the Divine Beasts, Ganon instead takes possession of Astor's body to complete his resurrection.

For whatever reason, Astor was not made playable in the game, though the code features a full moveset for him. This moveset includes the ability to summon malice, a shield of constellations he uses to protect himself, dark balls of energy he spreads across the stage, the ability to teleport, waves of shadow he can cast outward, and explosions he can set off. I think that does plenty for our purposes. Let's go!

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Dark Orbs

He will send out a swarm of dark orbs to float forward across the stage and detonate after a short period of time.

Side B: Malice

He will cast his hand downward, and cause a bunch of malice to grow up across a stretch of the stage. It will have all the normal effects.

Up B: Teleportation

He will blink out of existence and reappear high above, teleporting out of the way of trouble.

Down B: Constellation Shield

He will create a shield of constellations around himself that will protect him from most projectiles.

Final Smash: Great Sacrifice

He will do as he did to the Yiga Clan and summon the calamity, sucking in the opposing players and sacrificing them to Ganon.

Entrance: He will be reading a book of prophecy, snap it closed, and turn to face his opponent.

Taunts: Up, he will raise his hands and laugh maniacally, as if waiting for Ganon to grant him power. Side, he will hold up his malice eye and peer into it. Down, he will flip aimlessly through his book as if bored.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a dragon warrior original to Hyrule Warriors.

Character Sheet: Cia

CIA

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Probably should be stated that this is one character that would fall into the camp of "Mai Shiranui" design complications, but if we can work that out, here she is. Cia was a powerful witch who lived alone in the forest and watched over the whole history of Hyrule. When she fell in love with Link and grew jealous of his intertwined destiny with Zelda, Ganondorf twisted her heart and led her to cast all of her goodness out as Lana, raising an army to march against Hyrule and overthrow destiny.

As a fighter, she wields a scepter that she can cast waves and orbs of dark magic, summon tornadoes, create a squad of Dark Links to protect her, and create a grid of explosions. She also wields a whip, totally not leaning into her dominatrix vibes, and a summoning gate that she can call forth monsters through. Again, there is kind of a reason I think her character model was originally Veran's.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Orb of Darkness

She will hold up her scepter and charge up a sphere of dark energy, casting it forward as a projectile.

Side B: Whip

She will lash her whip forward, striking and burning her opponents, and pulling them in if she hits them just right.

Up B: Summoning Gate

She will step through her summoning gate as it opens up in a new location high above her, allowing her to teleport instantaneously.

Down B: Dark Link

She will summon two Dark Links as a counter shield for her. If one of the Links is hit, the Link will then slash forward at the attacker.

Final Smash: Explosion Grid

She will create a grid across most of the map and light off powerful explosions along it, damaging anyone caught on one of the squares.

Entrance: She will emerge from a summoning gate, laughing and feeling herself seductively like she does.

Taunts: Up, she will raise her staff high into the air and laugh. Side, she will feel herself up like she does. Down, she will bring up a book and flip through it.

Thanks for reading! Next up, another new villain of the Warriors series, but weirdly, not one that got to be playable.

Now, I could do what I have of the Zelda series so far. On the one hand, it would be less complicated to wait until after, but that wouldn't be too bad either way. On the other hand, and more importantly, doing this, and doing it now when I've stepped away from the Mario series for a while, has been really helpful in compiling a list for something I'll be doing in the relatively near future (like seriously, I had about two ideas on the list before, but now I have at least more than a dozen), and I kind of want to do the same for the Zelda series when that time comes, so I think I'm going to hold off for the time being. Thanks for reading!
