Legend of Zelda Revisit

LEGEND OF ZELDA

In the few months since I last revisited, no new games have come out. I am excited for Echoes of Wisdom, but that hasn't released yet. I had heard the Twilight Princess manga wrapped up recently, but that's really it. I also have no Second Chance characters in mind, so I guess we're moving on to Metroid. See you tomorrow!

Kalin

KALIN

Riruto grew up alongside a young girl, his best friend that he loves more than anything else.

This is Kalin, the inheritor of Zelda’s spirit in the same way Riruto inherited Link’s spirit. Like Riruto, she is eventually killed as well, finding herself trained by Princess Zelda in the spirit world before returning to life.

As a fighter, she acts as an echo of the manga version of Zelda, inheriting all the powers that that version of the princess uses, if maybe not as adeptly.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Kanan

KANAN

As Link, the half-human, half-elf lovechild half-brother of Zelda, set out on his journey to rescue the princess, he soon came upon his aunt, an elven warrior like his father.

This is Kanan, an elf who trains Link in all the abilities of his father. She would prove a valuable ally throughout that comic run.

As a fighter, she will be an echo of her brother, using all the same moves and powers that she trains Link to use.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Rune

RUNE

In the early days of Zelda, there was not too much to go on, resulting in some really weird adaptations. In one such adaptation, the story started with a young elf having a sordid affair with a human princess, causing a demon to be summoned by their forbidden union.

This young elf was Rune, Link’s father. He and his lover, Zelda’s mother, ended up both being murdered by the demon, leaving their lovechild, Link, to inherit his sword and his powers.

As a fighter, he will be similar to Link, but much more powerful, given the much higher power levels at play in that comic series. He himself will act as a gimmick representative for all the unique aspects of his series, using most of the unique skills Link uses in that one.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Gibdo

GIBDO

In some of the later dungeons, the players will also encounter mummies that creep around after Link.

These are the Gibdoes, standard enemies in most desert levels of the series. In the most recent installment, Tears of the Kingdom, they took on a more buglike appearance.

As fighters, they will be slow, with moderate power behind them, but a high level of defense. Their moveset will pull from all across their appearances in the franchise.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Gleeok

GLEEOK

Another boss in another dungeon turns out to be a three-headed dragon breathing fire.

This is the Gleeok, Hyrule’s version of a Hydra. Gleeoks appear frequently throughout the series, most often in the 2D games, often used in games where teamwork is required.

As a fighter, the Gleeok will be large and heavy, with devastatingly powerful moves befitting a boss. Their moveset will pull from all of their major battles, especially their most recent appearance in Tears of the Kingdom.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Zora

ZORA

As you wander the overworld, here and there you will encounter a lake or two. From the water of these lakes, grotesque heads will emerge and spit fire at you.

These are the Zora. Though initially just another monster, they will receive an upgrade in Ocarina of Time, transforming them into a graceful race that dwells in Lake Hylia and a secret kingdom behind a waterfall. Ever since, they have been one of the most recurring standard races of Hyrule.

As fighters, they will be fast and deadly, with striking moves that overwhelm their opponents. Their moveset pulls from all their various appearances in the series, matching the moveset of their member, Mikau.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

3.       Darbus

4.       Ralis

5.       Gulley

6.       Osfala

7.       Irene

9.       Queen Oren

10.   Paya

11.   Rune

12.   Kanan

15.   Gwonam

16.   Tetra’s Crew

19.   Zora

20.   Rito

21.   Korok

22.   Gerudo

23.   Stalchildren

24.   Ganon Blight

Kanan comes from the same manga as Rune and is Link's aunt, Rune's sister, who appears to him and teaches him in the ways of elves and magic, acting as a recurring supporting character throughout both series.

Here is her moveset:

Standard B: White Sword

She will probably have a bit less raw power behind it.

Side B: Hyper Magic Sword

Being more of a magic user, this move will pack a lot more punch.

Up B: Elven Leap

She will jump much higher.

Down B: Healing Fairies

These will have substantially more healing power.

Final Smash: Demon Ganon

Same. It'll just hit a little less powerfully.

Entrance: She will land in a hero pose and rise with her fairies around her.

Taunts: Up, her fairies will swirl around her. Side, she will hold out her hand and play with one of her fairies. Down, she will crouch and look around.

Losing Screen: She will be surrounded by darkness and fall.

Color Swaps: All based on her brother's.

Thanks for reading! Up next, Talon gets to work.

Character Sheet: Rune

RUNE

And here's all the characters that I gave a definitive YES to during my second chance round. They are:

1.       Fierce Deity Link

2.       Kalin

3.       Darbus

4.       Ralis

5.       Gulley

6.       Osfala

7.       Irene

8.       Rosso

9.       Queen Oren

10.   Paya

11.   Rune

12.   Kanan

13.   Talon

14.   Ingo

15.   Gwonam

16.   Tetra’s Crew

17.   Kokiri

18.   Goron

19.   Zora

20.   Rito

21.   Korok

22.   Gerudo

23.   Stalchildren

24.   Ganon Blight

Rune comes from the Mishouzaki manga, you know, the one where Link and Zelda are secretly siblings because his dad and her mom committed the unpardonable sin of . . . interracial sex, and thus summoned an all-powerful demon from hell to punish them. Yeah. Anyway, Rune is Link's dad, so the said elven human-diddler. I have decided to include him as a gimmick rep, since "Manga Link" covers all of the mangas, while this one was just weird enough to warrant it's own moveset.

Here is her moveset:

Standard B: White Sword

He will draw Link's ridiculous giant wedge-shaped sword from this game and stab forward with it, doing a lot of damage.

Side B: Hyper Magic Sword

He will pull out his son's second sword, the Hyper Magic Sword, and use it to blast a burst of lightning across the stage.

Up B: Elven Leap

Elves can jump very high in this, so that's what he's going to do.

Down B: Healing Fairies

The fairies of his sister Kanan will surround him and heal him a little. They can also be sent out to heal allies.

Final Smash: Demon Ganon

The big scary demon that Rune summoned via horniness will appear, cause the stage to go dark, and then impale the nearest opponent.

Entrance: He will rise from behind a bush, adjusting his tunic.

Taunts: Up, he will raise the White Sword high. Side, he will rub the back of his head and look sheepish. Down, he will crouch and peek out over some shrubbery.

Kirby Hat: His blonde hair.

Kart: Based on his own sword.

Special Move: He will thrust out with his White Sword, which will act as an obstacle for anyone coming up behind it.

Spirit Battle: On Ganon's Statue, with Kanan.

Victory Screen: He will stand tall with the White Sword and look heroic.

Losing Screen: He will be impaled by Ganon's tusk and fall to the ground.

Color Swaps: All based on Manga Link's own.

Thanks for reading! Up next, Kanan fulfills her brother's legacy.

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round (Part V)

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

Next up, we have the Shrine Guardians. You remember, the small ones that hang out in the Sheikah Shrines in Breath of the Wild, that fight you a lot. They're in this weird middle ground between the Ancient Guardians and Terrako, where technically everything is covered, and even they act as color swaps to those already. It just bothers me, honestly. But I think I'm going to suck it up today, and say:

NO

As for the Blights, the big bosses of the four Divine Beasts of Breath of the Wild, I initially just kinda brushed them aside, as they were really just extensions of Calamity Ganon himself. But I suppose with Phantom Ganon around, that's really not fair, so, using their various unique elemental attacks, I will say:

YES

As for Kalin, if you remember Oath of Riruto, the Zelda comic trying really hard to be Dragon Ball, she was Riruto's childhood friend and the inheritor of Zelda's spirit. Under that logic, I suppose there's really no reason she couldn't be an echo of Manga Zelda. So:

YES

And then Cho was a supporting character and friend of Kala, Riruto's second companion. He functionally served somewhere around the Yajirobe or Korin role. The thought was that maybe he could be an echo of Kala, as she did pull from him a little, but I think I'm fine leaving him as more of an extension of her for now. So, I'll say:

NO

Come back tomorrow for the final four on the initial list!

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round (Part IV)

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

Next up, we have a few more that are basically possible echoes. While the Stalfos have long been a major staple of the Zelda franchise, they have frequently been accompanied by their much smaller counterparts, the Stalchildren. Perhaps you might know them best for their appearance in Ocarina of Time, making Hyrule Field a bit dangerous to wander around at night. As a smaller, weaker echo to the Stalfos, I'd say:

YES

In the same vein, we also have the Dinolfos, generally seen as much bigger, more saurian cousins of the Lizalfos. Although, to be honest, I've always seen them as basically just Lizalfos by another name, similar to Iron Knuckles and Darknuts. Under that lighting, I'd have to say:

NO

And of course, make sure they are well represented by the Lizalfos skins. Next up, we have Junglo, Aba's mentor and adoptive father, the logic being that he taught her most everything she knows, and as such would be her echo. However, I believe it was Wizbenorno who suggested all the companions of Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, and that got me thinking a little bit.

So, a concept I've been working on, especially as we get closer and closer to Pokemon, is "what to do with long lists of characters who would be functionally the same." So, say we do Pokemon Trainer as a general concept for the Pokemon Franchise, where you can pick a trainer, then attach to them an assortment of three Pokemon, either from a selection recommended for that specific trainer, or simply as a "choose your own." The roster for that would have to be markedly different, and I visualize it as more of a pull-down menu that lets you scroll through, pick your favorite trainer/gym leader/rival/etc. This concept could then be carried over to the "Football Player" character for some real world stuff or Madden or something, with a pull-down menu letting you play as your favorite player with the same basic moveset. So, I think I am going to implement that for the first time here. Instead of "Aba" (Though I could easily see Aba at the top), we will have a "Bodyguard" spot that will instantly bring up a list of all the hireable bodyguards from the game. The next time I return to Mario, I think I'll make that change to the Golf and Tennis players as well. So, I guess my answer is:

KINDA

And finally we have Paya, Impa's granddaughter who might be related to Hinata Hyuga. For Paya, we never actually see her in action, but I imagine it's fair to say her grandmother would have taught her in most of their ways. I want to say:

YES

But I can imagine others disagreeing with my decision. Let me know in the comments if you do or not. Thank you!

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round (Part III)

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

Next up, we have Prince Ralis, following the same logic. So, as an echo to Princess Ruto, I say:

YES

Then, we have generic race representatives. Basically, these would include the characters of "Goron," "Zora," "Rito," and "Gerudo." As echoes for Darmani, Mikau, Medli, and Nabooru specifically, I say:

YES

YES

YES

YES

Next, we have the Loftwings. They were kind of included previously with Groose's moveset, Groose being picked to represent everything Skyloft-related, but I wanted to go back and examine the Loftwings themselves, just in case. Sadly, outside of the general flying around, the Spiral Charge is one of the only main moves it can learn, and I just couldn't find enough I could reasonably attach otherwise. So:

NO

And the last one is something I'm ambivalent on, so I'm going to leave it up to a poll!

Thursday, December 7, 2023

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round (Part 2)

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

Next up, we have Tetra's crew: Gonzo, Niko, Mako, Zuko, Nudge, and Senza. They are mostly background characters, but also kind of important characters, returning for Phantom Hourglass and everything. The big thing here is that Tetra's moveset is heavily based on everything related to their ship and lives as pirates, so there's no reason they couldn't act, as a group, as her echo. So:

YES

Now, we have an interesting one. Malon has a moveset built around her farm and the animals and implements found there. It would be reasonable for her to have an echo, someone who lives on said farm, or a similar farm. Now we can go two directions here, one, go with Romani and Cremia, who used her same character model, or we could go with Talon or Ingo. I weighed the options, and I'm mostly fine with Romani and Cremia just being named color swaps for Malon, seeing as they are literally just her model re-used. Instead I will give the echo to Talon.

YES

As for Ingo, given the bandits that re-used his skin, his generally crueler nature and use of a whip and pitchfork, I actually think I could make a decent semi-clone out of him, so I'm going to say:

YES

Tarin, I think, will be just fine for now to be a color variant of Talon, as he's not quite as attached to the stuff Marin's moveset came from to warrant him as an echo for her, so:

NO

As for the Pirate Queen, she and "general Gerudo warrior" were both options that arose for Nabooru echoes. And I'm not sure I could quite justify using Urbosa or Riju for one of them. So I simply have to ask myself, which one do I care more about representing, and which one can just be a color variant for Nabooru. And well, the answer was the general Gerudo warrior. So, for the Pirate Queen, I say:

NO

And for Darbus, we technically already covered it. As an echo for Darunia, I say:

YES

And that's it for today! Come back next time for four more characters!

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round (Part I)

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

We'll start with Osfala, and I suppose the other sages, appearing in A Link Between Worlds. Strictly speaking, they're the same group, I just added them for different reasonings. Osfala, I said "Sahasrahla doesn't have an echo, and he could easily fill that role, being his apprentice." So, for Osfala, I say:

YES

Then we have the other sages, which, alongside some others lower down on this list came from a realization that, with our four Goron reps and four Zora reps and so on, and all the stuff we did for that, we ended up with four full unique movesets, meaning that every single one of them could have had echoes, meaning Darbus and Ralis, generic species models, and some of the LBW sages could have been represented here. So, we will do that. Let's say for Rosso, Darbus can go to Darunia, the generic Goron can go to Darmani, and Rosso can work with either Yunobo or Daruk. Either way, Rosso gets a:

YES

In the same vein, if generic Zoras go to Mikau, and Ralis goes to Ruto, Queen Oren can fit with either Mipha or Sidon. The answer is:

YES

And then, by the same token, I remembered that Irene is literally Maple's apprentice, so:

YES

Then we come to Gulley, the son of the Blacksmith. Now the blacksmith would have his forge and hammer to work with, as well as the weapons he tempers for Link, plus the pouch item that Gulley drops, and I guess there's room to work there. I think I'm going to say:

YES

Sadly, Seres won't be joining her companions, as she basically boils down to "Damsel in Distress #1," getting abducted at the beginning of the game, and not doing much else. So, I have to say:

NO

Next up, the Helmasaur is a common enemy, a quadrupedal dinosaur creature with a metal plate covering its head. I had thought it could be an echo for the Dodongo, but at the end of the day, there just wasn't enough justification for that. So:

NO

And for Fierce Deity Link, well, there's a lot here that are basically "You know, that character really could have been an echo for that character. They don't have one yet." And for this one, it's Young Link. After all, Fierce Deity is Young Link, just a heck of a lot more powerful. So:

YES

Check back tomorrow for the next for characters on our list!

Legend of Zelda Second Chance Round

LEGEND OF ZELDA

SECOND CHANCE ROUND

And here is a list of characters I thought of that I might give a second chance to from the Zelda series. I no longer say that if I say NO here, that will be it for them. Instead they will be tentatively done, with the door slightly open just in case I think of something months down the line. Either way, here they are:

1.       Osfala

2.       The Seven Sages of Between Worlds

3.       Helmasaur

4.       Fierce Deity Link

5.       Tetra’s Crew

6.       Malon Echo Consideration

7.       The Pirate Queen

8.       Darbus

9.       Prince Ralis

10.   Regular race members

11.   Loftwing

12.   Yeta/Yeto split

13.   Stalchildren

14.   Dinolfos

15.   Junglo

16.   Paya

Character Sheet: Gleeok

GLEEOK

Now, let us go through and cover all characters now added thanks to their appearance in Tears of the Kingdom, either newcomers or old characters given more to work with, and at least one that got added through association. They are:

1. Tulin

2. Mineru

3. Purah

4. Rauru

5. Sonia

6. Zonai Construct

7. Gibdo

8. ReDead

9. Gleeok

10. Phantom Ganon

Gleeoks have been a feature of the Zelda series since the very beginning, generally appearing as a three-headed dragon that acts as a boss or mini-bosses. Though they've been featured regularly, it wasn't until Tears of the Kingdom, where they were brought in as new mini-bosses for the game, that they gained enough to earn themselves a spot in the roster.

Here is the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Elemental Breath

Mostly based on their Tears version, the Gleeok will breathe fire, ice, or lightning from one of its three heads, each one having something different.

Side B: Windstorm

The Gleeok will whip up heavy winds around itself with its wings, blowing opponents around.

Up B: Flight

The Gleeok will flap its mighty wings and launch itself high up into the air.

Down B: Tail Strike

The Gleeok will slash its tail forward in a circle, slamming into opponents and sending them flying. Another option could be a head-switching command, something that would swap between the ice, fire, and lightning heads being the main attacker.

Final Smash: Ultimate Elemental Attack

The Gleeok will perform one of its elemental finishers from Tears. If the switching mechanic is part of it, then it would be different each time, with the giant fireball crashing down onto the stage, ice chunks falling from the sky, and a lightning storm striking everything.

Entrance: The Gleeok will fly in and slam down onto the stage.

Taunts: Up, the fire head will blow fire into the air. Side, the lightning head will sweep its head sideways, creating a streak of lightning. Down, the ice head will create a frozen patch on the ground.

Kirby Hat: A little hat with three little fake heads on top.

Kart: Based on an Aquamentus.

Special Move: Each head will blow an element in three directions.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle on Hyrule Field.

Victory Screen: The heads will roar as lightning flashes behind them.

Losing Screen: They will let out one last roar and collapse before disappearing.

Color Swaps: Legend of Zelda model, Legend of Zelda artwork, Oracle of Seasons model, Phantom Hourglass model, Tears of the Kingdom fire, ice, lightning, and trio versions.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Phantom Ganon serves the first volley.

Legend of Zelda Closing Remarks

LEGEND OF ZELDA CLOSING REMARKS

And that's it. I have now covered all currently existing Legend of Zelda properties to the best of my knowledge. Obviously, at least one game will soon be coming out that I will have to go back to, but for now, let us enjoy being finished. I will be taking all of next week off from this (though you will likely notice me making some site rearrangements and organization), and then the next week I will return to the Mario series, cover everything new that has come out since I finished that series (Notably Mario + Rabbids and Mario Strikers, and we'll see if I have to wait for the movie or not), and I will do a little thing called the Second Chance Round, which I'll go into a bit more on that first Monday. Once I am finished there, I'll take another week, and begin Metroid! Thank you all for coming along this journey with me. May the Goddess smile upon you.
