Character Sheet: Diesel

DIESEL

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

Next, let's cover Diesel, the tritagonist of Samus & Joey and Metroid EX. Diesel is a mechanic working on the refueling station Junk Quixote, who Samus goes to for her every repair. After she shows up with Joey in tow, she leaves him under his tutelage whenever she needs to go on a more dangerous assignment. After Greed steals Samus's powerups, Diesel joins Samus and Joey on their quest to take them back.

Diesel floats around on a little flotation device at all time. He can also weld and repair things with surprising swiftness, a trait shared by his entire species as we see later on, who can disassemble entire ships in mere minutes as a swarm. They are also seen using drills and constructing rockets to destroy an enemy ship. Diesel also plants remote bombs and detonates them from afar at one point, and uploads a virus into an operating system. He has a ship of his own called the Junk Hawk.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Repair

He will work quickly, using a number of his tools, to assemble a rocket and send it flying forward at his opponents.

Side B: Disassemble

He can use this move when close to an opponent to deactivate one of their moves for ten seconds, causing it to malfunction when pressed.

Up B: Flotation Device

His little device will float upwards beneath him, carrying him upwards to get at something higher.

Down B: Remote Detonation

He can press this to plant a hidden bomb on the stage, which he can then detonate at a later time.

Final Smash: Junk Hawk

His junk collection vehicle will appear over the stage, carrying a load of broken down ship parts which it will release across the stage.

Entrance: He will be busy working on something and look up.

Taunts: Up, he will hold up a blowtorch and laugh like a maniac. Side, he will accidentally hit himself in the head and grumble out alien swears. Down, he will wiggle around his little tentacles like he's ranting and raving.

Kirby Hat: His ears and his stripes.

Kart: Based on his little flotation device.

Special Move: He will be able to quickly disassemble an opponent's kart, leaving them at a standstill for a few seconds.

Spirit Battle: On Junk Quixote, with Samus and Joey.

Victory Screen: He will stand before a repaired ship and look proud of his handiwork.

Losing Screen: The ship he was working on will fall to pieces around him.

Color Swaps: His normal appearance, with more reddish fur, with green fur, with blue fur, with pink fur, with orange fur, with white fur, and with black fur.

Character Sheet: Mauk

MAUK

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

Next up, let's cover the third member of Samus and Kreatz's trio, Mauk. Mauk is a huge hulking ape-man with tremendous strength and a sharp mind to go with it. His species were, up until recently, still in their proto-Neanderthal stage, and not considered sapient. Mauk is one of the first of his race to become a marine in the Federation, and feels protective of the Chozo for their advocacy for his people.

In the first part of the story, Mauk mainly uses his physical body to attack, slamming hard into his opponents and lifting them high into the air, also jumping quite high and moving with agility. Later on, after a time skip, he is seeing carrying around a large rifle-like weapon and mounted guns on his shoulders.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Slam

He will thrust forward with his large fists, smashing them to the ground hard.

Side B: Energy Rifle

He will hold up his rifle weapon and shoot forward an explosive projectile.

Up B: Leap

He will use his powerful legs to jump up into the air and slam back down.

Down B: Shoulder Cannons

He will activate his shoulder-mounted cannons and fire them at oncoming enemies, which will fire as a series of beams.

Final Smash: Operation Overkill

The same attack as Kreatz's, just with a little more force to it.

Entrance: He will leap down from above, wearing his camouflage.

Taunts: Up, he will raise his rifle into the air in a war chant. Side, he will cross his arms and look solemn. Down, he will crouch and look around carefully.

Kirby Hat: His hairy mane.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship.

Special Move: He will reach out with his fists and slam someone nearby, making them spin out.

Spirit Battle: On Federation Headquarters, with Samus and Kreatz.

Victory Screen: He will lower his weapon and stand proudly, saying "Mission complete."

Losing Screen: He will stagger as if injured and fall to the ground.

Color Swaps: His normal appearance, the same with red fur, the same with white fur, wearing his camouflage cloak, his older armored form, with the same red fur, with the same white fur, with black fur.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Samus and Joey's resident mechanic.

Character Sheet: Kreatz

KREATZ

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

In the Metroid manga appearing in Magazine Z, which by all accounts seems to be treated as canon by Nintendo, Samus had a pair of companions during her Federation days that she went on multiple missions with. These two were Kreatz and Mauk. Kreatz was the sneaky, wisecracking member of the team, who frequently faced discrimination because his people had been responsible for a war in the past.

Kreatz's main weapon are his energy whips, which he seems to be able to extend from his fingers. While more simple, he uses them in a number of creative ways. He shoots them forward to strike opponents, swirls them around himself to create a field of damage and protection, and even seems to use them to slow his descent when in midair. He also wears a stealth suit on one occasion to sneak around.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Energy Lash

He will lash his whips straight forward, using them to pierce opponents in front of him.

Side B: Energy Circle

He will spin the whips rapidly around himself, protecting from damage while also dealing damage to those around him.

Up B: Energy Float

He will spin the whips rapidly to his sides, allowing him to lift himself up off the ground and float for a moment.

Down B: Stealth Suit

He will switch on his stealth suit, which will make him mostly invisible for a short time and let him move around unseen.

Final Smash: Operation Overkill

He will do as he and Mauk did to get Samus and the Chozo out and call in Samus's ship to attack the stage remotely and bomb everything in sight.

Entrance: He will rise in his camouflage and take it off.

Taunts: Up, he will hold up his thumb and smirk. Side, he will swirl his whips around himself. Down, he will pull out his binoculars and look around.

Kirby Hat: His hair and ears.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship.

Special Move: He will lash his whips around himself, protecting from damage and striking anyone who gets too close.

Spirit Battle: On Federation Headquarters, with Samus and Mauk.

Victory Screen: He will stand tall and smirk, giving a thumbs up.

Losing Screen: He will stagger as if injured and fall to the ground.

Color Swaps: His normal outfit, a red version, his camouflage hood, a more sandy variant, his stealth suit, a white version, his older appearance, a more green version.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Samus's other companion from the same.

Character Sheet: Joey Apronika

JOEY APRONIKA

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

We will start with the co-main character of the Samus & Joey and Metroid EX series, Joey Apronika. Joey started his life on the Planet Liberty, the son of a legendary hero and a brilliant doctor. When his father died, he was left pretty much on his own, as his mother delved herself into her work, going on relief mission after relief mission to other planets and leaving Joey to practically raise himself. When Pirates invaded, Joey threw himself into danger again and again, determined to protect his home the way his dad would, and eventually, Samus agreed to take him on as an apprentice.

Across the series, Joey proves resourceful and tricky, using whatever he finds around him in creative ways, such as using sticks and sparklers, stealing a space pirate's gun, wearing a space pirate's shedded skin to sneak around and then using that same skin as a war flag. His main personal weapons, however, include his father's field knuckles, powerful gauntlets that can throw devastating punches, create energy shields, absorb energy, and had a powerful finishing move called Exodus, which could absorb a ton of energy at once and then reflect it back at the attacker, killing them instantly. He also has wheels on his shoes to get around faster.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Field Knuckle

Joey will punch forward with his gauntlets, the amount of time the attack was held determining how powerful the punch is. A fully charged one is equivalent to Captain Falcon's Falcon Punch or Roy's Flame Blade.

Side B: Wheelie

Joey will speed forward at high speed on his wheelies, striking anyone he passes as he does so.

Up B: Magnetic Field

Joey will project a magnetic field around himself from his field knuckles, keeping himself afloat while making him untouchable for a short time.

Down B: Energy Barrier

He will project a protective shield in front of himself, which will cause any projectiles that strike it to ricochet in a random direction.

Final Smash: Exodus

Joey will charge up, drawing in energy from all over the stage, and then launch it back out in a powerful blast that will instantly KO his opponent.

Entrance: Joey will come careening in on his wheelies, yelling a war cry.

Taunts: Up, Joey will hold up a Space Pirate skin as a flag and wave it around. Side, Joey will light up sparklers and wave them around. Down, Joey will slip on his wheelies and fall on his butt.

Kirby Hat: Joey's hair.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship from the comic.

Special Move: He will project an energy shield that will send oncoming projectiles careening off in a different direction.

Spirit Battle: On Junk Quixote, with Samus and Diesel as backup.

Victory Screen: Joey will pump his knuckles together and jump excitedly into the air.

Losing Screen: Joey will slump to the ground, drained of his life force.

Color Swaps: His normal green colors, a red jumpsuit, a blue jumpsuit, a pink jumpsuit, a yellow jumpsuit, a white jumpsuit, wearing the Space Pirate skin, and his adult form from the epilogue.

Other Metroid Comics

OTHER METROID COMICS

Today, let's finish up with all remaining Metroid comics that were more small little things with very little substance. The first is "The Shape of Happiness," a collection of comic stories based on Nintendo properties, among which are three Metroid chapters, the first of which feature Samus working alongside a green policeman named Mari Yoshimura #2. Yoshimura doesn't do much and ends up getting killed by a Metroid disguised as a bellhop (don't ask).

Next is a comic based on Metroid Prime, yet unlike its sequel, really just retells the story of Metroid Prime with no variation or additional characters. That's pretty much it for published comics, however, we should also mention that a Metroid series was also pitched three times to Archie Comics back in 2009, all three of which were ultimately abandoned.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Metroid Prime: Episode of Aether

METROID PRIME: EPISODE OF AETHER

Our last comic of any real substance is Metroid Prime: Episode of Aether, an adaptation of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The story mostly followed the events of the game, except adding in four surviving soldiers of the attack by the Ing at the beginning.

Samus is our main character, alongside the Federation soldiers Klaus Schneider, Miguel Luis Garcia, Lily Thran, and Jeff McCloud. Between the four of them, they used knives, guns, machine guns, and tech. The four would ultimately act as guards at the Final Gate, holding off the Ing horde while Samus fought Emperor Ing and Dark Samus. All four would ultimately lose their lives.

A Space Pirate boss would also play a major role in the opening chapters, fighting Samus by stomping his enemies, choking them, using a blade and a gatling gun, and throwing civilians as projectiles.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Joey: Field Knuckles, punches, energy barriers, wheels, stick, sparklers, Space Pirate gun, Space Pirate's skin, absorb energy, Exodus

Diesel: flotation device, weld, fix things, detonate bombs, viruses, Junk Hawk

Metroid EX

METROID EX

Metroid EX is basically the second half of Samus & Joey, except that it goes by a different name. After Greed stole all of Samus's powerups, he founded the Greed Corps made up of enemies of Samus and the Federation, splitting the powerups between six of them. Samus, Joey, and Diesel set out in Samus's ship, determined to track Greed down and take the powers back.

All three main characters return, all with the same powers and abilities seen in the previous series. Joey also gains the ability to absorb energy with his Field Knuckles, and uses a special move called Exodus. We also get to meet Diesel's people, including his mentor Papa Lightning, who help the trio by entirely disassembling a spaceship by hand, and using a drill and a rocket. Zegan Doh and Bomad, enemies of the previous comic, also appear, reformed and fighting to help Samus and her team.

Greed returns as the main villain. His ultimate plan involves unlocking an ancient power hidden in some ancient ruins, which causes black holes to start opening all over the galaxy. He spread Samus's powerups to six of his followers. Zameel gets the missiles, Golon gets the morph ball, Chrysta gets the freeze beam, Blast gets her bombs, Rockets gets the shinespark, and Defen wears the Varia Suit. Their respective battles are entirely built on using those.

Later on, we meet Greed's right hand men, Bishop and Knight. Bishop is a very Starscream-esque individual, using plasma beams, an impenetrable shield, a trap made up of blocks, and a move called void obliteration. Knight is more of an honorable knight forced to serve Greed and ultimately turns on him. He uses a sword to slice, slash, and defend, and uses moves called force blow, guillotine blast, meteor return, and explosive divide.

The comic travels to various planets being oppressed by Greed's forces, generally built around the best use of the stolen powerups, and the final battle takes place in the Hall of the Gods, where the ancient power is located.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Joey: Field Knuckles, punches, energy barriers, wheels, stick, sparklers, Space Pirate gun, Space Pirate's skin, absorb energy, Exodus

Diesel: flotation device, weld, fix things, detonate bombs, viruses, Junk Hawk

Samus & Joey

SAMUS & JOEY

Today, we cover Samus & Joey, a Metroid comic series that looks like a weird direction to take Samus in at first, but it ends up being a really solid story in its own right. It tells the story of Joey Apronika, a little boy living on a planet in the Federation, who encounters Samus after Space Pirates invade his planet, and he convinces her to take him on as an apprentice. The story seems to take place generally after the events of the game series, at least after Fusion, and explores the world of the Federation with more wiggle room.

After Samus, Joey is our main character, who uses special Field Knuckles that he inherited from his father to deliver devastating punches and to create energy barriers as shields. He also has wheels on his shoes that he uses to get around fast, attacks with a stick and sparklers, steals a Space Pirate gun at one point, and steals a Space Pirate's skin to disguise himself and wave around as a flag.

Another major character is Diesel, an engineer working on Junk Quixote, a run-down refueling station where Samus stops for a tune-up and treats as a general home base. Diesel can fly around on a little flotation device, weld and fix things, detonate bombs remotely, upload viruses, and has a ship called the Junk Hawk. Joey's mother, Diana, also appears in the story, having been gone for several years on a relief mission.

The major space pirates appearing in the opening story arc are the general Dragud and the warrior Doruba. Doruba has a giant mech and can shoot lasers, but that's it for him. They turn out to be cloning what they call a Megaroid from the DNA of dead Metroids, which then turns against its captors and breaks loose, draining energy from the Space Pirate ship to get even bigger. The Megaroid can also break apart into a dozen little pieces, which then come alive as living shards to drain the people of the planet.

Samus and Joey later find Diesel held captive by a Space Pirate named Jealousy, using a bounty hunter named Bomad as protection. Bomad kicks, punches, and uses a special item called a gravity bomb to keep the two heroes at bay. Later, Samus and Joey go on a mission to rescue Joey's mother and her team after they become stranded on an icy planet, where their lives are hounded by carnivorous penguin things called Amokmaw, who can slide around, eat ravenously, jet forward at high speed, shoot lasers and disrupt things with strong sound waves, and a giant one appears at the end.

Another story features a dangerous robot called U-Ton that Joey befriends but ultimately has to be destroyed (a la Iron Giant). U-Ton can extend its arms out really far, shoots laser blasts, strikes with claws, and has a very powerful attack called the Delta Mirage. Yet another features Dangelo, an escaped convict from Samus's past, who steals a suit similar to hers but can also turn invisible.

Toward the end of the series, Samus starts to track down a group called Dominion, behind many of the events of the story. They first have to face Integra, a giant mech that attacks by grabbing, using underarm blasters, and dropping power bombs. Then a bounty hunter named Zegan Doh is hired to kill them using a blade hand and a shield. Finally, the true mastermind is revealed as a former pirate named Greed, of the same species as Ridley, come for revenge against her. He uses mind control on Joey, forcing him to electrocute himself unless Samus willingly gives up all of her suit's abilities to him. The series then ends on a cliffhanger, leading into a sequel series.

And that's about it. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Joey: Field Knuckles, punches, energy barriers, wheels, stick, sparklers, Space Pirate gun, Space Pirate's skin

Magazine Z

MAGAZINE Z

Today, we cover Magazine Z, one of the best Metroid comics, and possibly one of the only Nintendo comics to be considered canon to the games, as several characters and plot points from the comic have been referenced in games since. The comic essentially tells the origin story of Samus, from her young childhood all the way down to the start of Metroid: Zero Mission, with the destruction of her home planet and the death of her parents, her adoption by the Chozo, and her brief stint as part of the Federation.

Major characters include Rodney and Virginia Aran, Samus's parents and miners from the planet K-2L. When Ridley and his pirates attack the planet for the precious resource Afloratite, Rodney sacrifices himself by detonating an entire cargo shipment of the stuff to prevent the pirates from taking it, and Virginia is killed defending Samus after the naive little girl comes across Ridley and tries to befriend him.

After them, we have the major Chozo characters. Old Bird, who we met already, is Samus's first Chozo friend and a wise pacifist who teaches her about life. Gray Voice is more serious and stern with her, but as we come to discover, came to care about her deeply and supplied the genetic material used to enhance her, making him her surrogate father. Gray Voice is especially notable for taking up an ancient suit of armor and taking on Mother Brain alone, wielding a staff that he can fire blasts from. Platinum Chest is also important, but not as ingrained in the story as Old Bird and Gray Voice.

Chairman Keaton and Captain Hardy return from the previous comic as well, as major players in the Federation. Samus also has a pair of partners working with her in the federation, Kreatz and Mauk. Kreatz comes from an alien race responsible for a previous war and Mauk's species was only recently recognized as sapient, and both face discrimination for it. Kreatz shoots energy strings from his fingers and uses them in several creative ways, while Mauk is big and huge, slamming and lifting with his immense strength, and later wields a bazooka and shoulder guns. Samus also has a pet named Pyonchi who follows her around, and a young girl named Damara was saved by Samus early on and she crops up again as a new recruit to the academy.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Super Metroid (Nintendo Power)

SUPER METROID (NINTENDO POWER)

Now, let's cover a five-issue comic series released by Nintendo Power comics that somewhat followed the plot of Super Metroid and seems to be set in the same universe as the Magazine Z comics that we will cover tomorrow. Samus heads to Zebes, but she is accompanied by a fellow bounty hunter named Armstrong Houston who really, really, really wants to become her partner. He doesn't do much to help fight, except to cut a spike once in her defense, and mostly exists to receive exposition about Samus's backstory. However, there are aspects that might give us something to work with, in that he wears a blue suit similar to Samus's power suit with the same colors as the Federation marines seen in Other M. Many have even theorized that those designs were directly inspired by him. We will see how it goes.

Other supporting characters include Chairman Keaton, the leader of the Federation, and Captain Hardy, Samus's somewhat incompetent dispatcher, who will reappear in Magazine Z. There is also Old Bird, the Chozo who rescued Samus as a child and will play a massively pivotal role in Magazine Z, who Armstrong takes Samus to to be healed after she is severely wounded in battle.

And that's about it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Armstrong Houston: possible Samus/Federation Marine echo basis

Commander Nemo

Chairman Keaton

Captain Hardy

Old Bird: float, healing bubble

Big Time Brannigan: arm cannon

Nintendo Comics System

NINTENDO COMICS SYSTEM

Much like Mario and Zelda, Metroid too had an entry in the Nintendo comics system, albeit with only two issues. The first tells a bit of Samus's background at the Federation academy, while the second features her going up against a rival bounty hunter named Big Time Brannigan who has been hired by Mother Brain to take her out. Big Time doesn't do too much, really only shooting at her with his big leg blaster at different points. It's still a fun read anyway. Samus and the trio of baddies from the first Metroid game would go on to appear in the Captain N comics.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

We'll start with the most, well, infamous of the comics, specifically in that the author, Minazuki Yuu, clearly had no idea about the whole "Samus is a girl" twist, consistently portrayed "him" as a cocky space adventurer along the lines of James Bond, and featured a famous panel showing Samus with a scantily clad woman on each arm. Either that or the author was playing the long game and really pushing the narrative of Samus as a badass lesbian queen.

Either way, the comic isn't much more than a humorous player's guide, showing our cocky Bond-type coming up to the various challenges of the game and having to maneuver around them. He had a boss named Commander Nemo, but that's really all there is in terms of original characters, and Samus and all bosses and enemies that appear are basically the same as they appear in the game.

And that's about it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Commander Nemo

Next up, Samus's adventures as they appeared in the Nintendo Comics System!

Character Sheet: Omega Metroid

OMEGA METROID

And now we come to the end of the game-originating characters (at least for now, the other media so far have added a few more in both Mario and Zelda). We have only two newcomers to mention today. They are:

1. Zero Suit Samus

2. Omega Metroid

While the original game just had the Omega Metroid as the single most developed and toughest of the different Metroid forms, Metroid: Samus Returns expands on the Omega Metroid, giving it an expansive moveset for a boss battle in its own right. For starters, it can fire a powerful laser beam from its mouth, both straight across at its opponent and at the ground. It can also leap really high, swipe with its large claws, and pound the ground with its tail. More than enough.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Laser Beam

It will charge up its mouth and fire a beam of hot energy from it.

Side B: Claw

It will lunge forward, slashing with its large claws.

Up B: Leap

It will leap high into the air and come back down on its opponents.

Down B: Energy Blast

It will blast its beam of energy at the ground and slowly move upward and outward, creating hot fire across the floor.

Final Smash: Final Metamorphosis

The Metroid's body will crack open and it will burst out as a Metroid Queen, lashing out and attacking those around it.

Entrance: A Zeta Metroid will hatch into it.

Taunts: Up, it will breathe fire into the air. Side, it will swipe and slam the ground with its tail. Down, it will crouch and sniff around for energy.

Kirby Hat: Its head as a hat.

Kart: Based on a Zeta Metroid's shell.

Special Move: It can breathe a beam of fire around itself in a straight line.

Spirit Battle: A battle on SR388.

Victory Screen: It will draw in enough energy and start hatching into a Queen.

Losing Screen: It will die and then crumble into nothing.

Color Swaps: Its standard green, a silvery shell, a black shell, a red shell, a blue shell, a black and purple shell, a golden shell, and a black-and-white old-timey look.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's put it all together!

Character Sheet: Zero Suit Samus

ZERO SUIT SAMUS

And now we come to the end of the game-originating characters (at least for now, the other media so far have added a few more in both Mario and Zelda). We have only two newcomers to mention today. They are:

1. Zero Suit Samus

2. Omega Metroid

Samus without her suit on has been a thing since the surprise reveal at the end of the very first game. However, it was Zero Mission that really inspired the sleek blue bodysuit and most of the moveset that inspired her appearance in Super Smash Bros. Her small stunning blaster came from there, that weird little flip move as well, with some of Samus's other moves filling in the rest, like the High Jump Boots and the Grapple Beam. I see no reason to mess with perfection.

Here's the moveset Sakurai mostly came up with:

Standard B: Stun Beam

Will stun the player in place for a second, pulling slightly from the Freeze Beam as well.

Side B: Laser Whip

I suspect some developer fetishes likely helped inspire this move just a little, but I'm going to stick with saying it comes from the Grapple Beam.

Up B: High Jump Boots

Just like in ultimate, her heels will act as the booster.

Down B: Flip

Honestly, I never understood this move until I watched the Zero Mission playthrough. Now, I appreciate this move enough to keep it in.

Final Smash: Samus's Spaceship

There's a few different options for the Final Smash provided by Smash itself, but I think I like the one where she stands on top of her ship and fires a beam down.

Entrance: Her suit will fall off of her.

Taunts: I think her Smash taunts might prove my earlier theory. I'm just going to say, up is adjusting her gun. Side is crouching and looking around. And down is her trying to call for backup.

Kirby Hat: Her ponytail.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship

Special Move: She will fire a stunner that will freeze a racer in place for two seconds.

Spirit Battle: A battle against Samus followed by her on Space Pirate Mothership.

Victory Screen: She will find her suit in containment and free it.

Losing Screen: That one screen where she looks stunned and the suit breaks off of her.

Color Swaps: Four of the bodysuit, four of the tank top. Bodysuits will be blue, pink, black and white, and green. Tank tops will be that dark blue one, the red one with the green hair, the orange one, and the white one.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a special type of Metroid!

Miscellaneous Metroid Games

MISCELLANEOUS METROID GAMES

And now, let's finish off the game section with everything else not covered by what all came before. First up, Metroid has a notable penchant for early release game demos, such as First Hunt for Metroid Prime Hunters, Blast Ball for Federation Force, and demos for Echoes, Corruption, and Dread. It also has a long history of cancelled, pitched, or prototype games that never saw the sun, including Metroid II DX, Metroid 64, Metaforce, Metroid 1.5, Project Valkyrie, Metroid Tactics, and so on.

Then we have small games like the Metroid Pocket Puzzle, a flash game based on Metroid Prime, a trivia quiz, a wallpaper game available for Windows and Internet Explorer called Metroid Buster, and a flash game based on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption called Special Mission.

From there, Samus and other Metroid-themed items have cropped up for cameos across Nintendo's library, such as her sleeping in the bed in Super Mario RPG, minigames in the Wario Ware series, attractions in Nintendo Land, and so on. And of course, we have Super Smash Bros., with Samus appearing alone in the first game, with a stage generally based on Planet Zebes. The second game would keep only her, but with a Brinstar stage and a stage called Brinstar Depths featuring Kraid. The third game introduced the option of her being able to remove her suit and play as Zero Suit Samus, with a stage based on Norfair and Frigate Orpheon from Prime, and both Ridley and Meta Ridley as bosses. The fourth game kept only the two versions of Samus (again), with a stage based on Other M's Pyrosphere, featuring Ridley's clone as a stage hazard. Finally, in Ultimate, both Ridley and Dark Samus joined the roster, albeit with no new stages to speak of.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws, fly fireballs, stomp, grab

Metroid Queen: laser beam, green orbs

Omega Metroid: laser beam, laser beam at ground, leap, claw, tail pound

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

SR388

Thanks for reading! Now, we have two new characters to fill out our game roster, starting with Zero Suit Samus!

Metroid Prime Remastered

METROID PRIME REMASTERED

I remember last year, when Metroid Prime's remaster was both announced and shadow-dropped the same day, a complete recreation from the ground up with drastically improved graphics, hundreds of quality of life improvements, and an overall genuine quality to it that led to many calling it the new gold standard of remakes. There's not a whole lot else I can say about it, as there weren't any brand new characters brought in or anything. It was just quality.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws, fly fireballs, stomp, grab

Metroid Queen: laser beam, green orbs

Omega Metroid: laser beam, laser beam at ground, leap, claw, tail pound

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

SR388

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's just quickly go over pretty much everything else!

Metroid Prime Trilogy

METROID PRIME TRILOGY

Now, we come to Metroid Prime Trilogy, a compilation of the three main Metroid Prime games released together in one game. This game came only two years after Corruption released, and on the same console, so really there wasn't any major additions, it was pretty much the three games lifted straight onto the disc, with maybe some graphical upgrades here and there.

That's really all I've got to say! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws, fly fireballs, stomp, grab

Metroid Queen: laser beam, green orbs

Omega Metroid: laser beam, laser beam at ground, leap, claw, tail pound

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

SR388

Thanks for reading! Next up, we finish off the remakes with a recent pleasant surprise!

Metroid: Samus Returns

METROID: SAMUS RETURNS

Next up, let's cover Metroid: Samus Returns! After a long drought of waiting and an announcement of Metroid Prime 4 that has still yet to be fully realized, a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus was revealed and released, soon to be followed by the long-awaited Metroid Dread. Samus Returns recreates the story and most of the basic level structure of Metroid II, just enhanced with fully 3D graphics and the like.

The biggest additions I can think of here are some slight enhancements on the Metroid Queen, who can shoot a laser beam and fire green orbs. Then we have the next level down of Metroids, the Omega Metroids, who received a massive upgrade, making them much more challenging mini-bosses. The Omegas can fire a laser beam, fire a laser beam across the ground, leap into the air, claw, and pound the ground with their tail. And then finally we have Ridley returning as a surprise final boss, titled Proteus Ridley as a mid-point between Meta Ridley and the restored Ridley who appears in Super, somehow regrowing his body. In this form, he can fly, spit fireballs, stomp and grab. Basic Ridley stuff.

And that's about it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws, fly fireballs, stomp, grab

Metroid Queen: laser beam, green orbs

Omega Metroid: laser beam, laser beam at ground, leap, claw, tail pound

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

SR388

Metroid: Zero Mission

METROID: ZERO MISSION

And now, it's time to take on every single "other" game from the Metroid franchise, starting with the remakes and re-releases. First up, we have Metroid: Zero Mission, a functional remake of the very first game but heavily expanded upon, mostly in a major added section at the end of the game, where Samus crash-lands while trying to escape the planet, and then has to sneak through the Space Pirate Mothership.

This is primarily where Zero Suit Samus originates in Smash. Deprived of her suit, Samus has to sneak through the mothership, using an emergency pistol, crawling, and performing backflips to get around. From there the laser whip that appears in her moveset seems to be pulled from Samus's grapple beam, and the rocket heels seem to have just been extrapolated from her design, though maybe combined with something like the High Space Jump.

Ridley returns as a boss in this segment as Mecha Ridley, probably a lead into how he became Meta Ridley in the Prime games. During this battle, he uses his claws and shoots missiles. Another boss takes the form of a Chozo who guards the Chozo Ruins, who tests Samus before she can proceed. This Chozo floats, shocks Samus, and gives her an orb.

The Space Pirate Mothership obviously becomes a new stage here, as well as the Chozo Ruins that Samus must visit.

And that should be about it as far as anything new! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

Thanks for reading! Next up, a recent remake of the original sequel.

43.   Phantoon

44.   Nightmare

45.   Metroid Queen

It also occurs to me that I forgot to do the updates on returning characters, so here goes: Samus will largely remain the same, as her previous moveset was built off the most common recurring trends which have still retained their presence here (though a little fluffing up is fine). Adam Malkovitch and the other Federation Marines will gain some from Corruption but not much more than seen in Other M. Though Mother Brain is largely absent and all of Ridley's appearances fall under Meta Ridley, the Space Pirates do come around a lot, especially offering up the Aerotrooper jetpacks. Metroids also appear, but aren't given much more than their standard.

Now that that's done, tomorrow we begin . . . everything else, gamewise.

Character Sheet: Labor Golem

LABOR GOLEM

And now, we have another set of characters, this time hailing from the Prime series of games. You'd think a series like Metroid wouldn't have that many, but we're pretty close to fifty now. Our new ones include:

1. Federation Mech

2. Rundas

3. Ghor

4. Gandrayda

5. Noxus

6. Sylux

7. Spire

8. Trace

9. Kanden

10. Weavel

12. Aurora Unit

13. Dark Samus

14. Meta Ridley

15. Metroid Prime

16. Emperor Ing

19. Steambot

20. Ing

21. Liquid Phazon

22. Quad

23. Phazon Elite

24. Berserker Lord

25. Labor Golem

Finally, let's cover the Bryyonian golems found in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, giant machines built by the ancient Bryyonians that could be controlled and used for specific tasks by Samus or her enemies. These golems came in two types, the Labor Golems, which Samus used primarily, and War Golems, which functioned as bosses.

Across both classes, they could be seen performing shoulder bashes, jumping into the air, using a battering ram, breathing fire and ice, shooting energy beams, picking up giant blocks, stomping on the ground, flying into a rage, and shooting orbs.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Fire Breath

The golem will open its mouth and breathe fire at its opponents. The ice could factor in here too.

Side B: Battering Ram

Could be the shoulder bash too, but I like having the item. The golem will heft it and charge forward, smashing through anything in its way.

Up B: Leap

The golem will jump high into the air and come back down with a heavy stomp, creating a small shockwave in doing so.

Down B: Block Lift

The golem will heft a very large block and drop it back down again, crushing anyone under it.

Final Smash: Mogenar

The big boss golem Mogenar will appear on the stage and start attacking those on it.

Entrance: Samus's morph ball will roll into it and activate it.

Taunts: Up, it will light up and raise its head. Side, it will raise a hand up like a platform. Down, it will seem to power down and sit again.

Kirby Hat: Its head armor.

Kart: Basically just a golem with wheels.

Special Move: It will be able to charge and break through any stage obstacle.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle on Norion.

Victory Screen: It will complete its task and go back to its resting phase.

Losing Screen: It will lose power and shut down completely.

Color Swaps: Its normal brown design, a black design, a red design, a blue design, a green design, a silver design, a gold design, and Mogenar.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's put our roster together!

Character Sheet: Berserker Lord

BERSERKER LORD

And now, we have another set of characters, this time hailing from the Prime series of games. You'd think a series like Metroid wouldn't have that many, but we're pretty close to fifty now. Our new ones include:

1. Federation Mech

2. Rundas

3. Ghor

4. Gandrayda

5. Noxus

6. Sylux

7. Spire

8. Trace

9. Kanden

10. Weavel

11. U-Mos

12. Aurora Unit

13. Dark Samus

14. Meta Ridley

15. Metroid Prime

16. Emperor Ing

17. Gorea

18. Chozo Ghost

19. Steambot

20. Ing

21. Liquid Phazon

22. Quad

23. Phazon Elite

24. Berserker Lord

25. Labor Golem

Today, let's cover a character that is an extension of the idea set up by the Phazon Elite in the first Metroid Prime. Berserker Lords, and Berserker Knights, are Space Pirates that have been so heavily enhanced with Phazon that they have mutated into giant hulking monstrosities that pose a serious problem for Samus and her allies.

Berserker Lords and Knights have multiple powerful attacks at their disposal. They can throw energy balls and shoot laser beams, spit out blobs of phazon, breathe pure energy from their mouths, and use their massive claws to attack. Plenty to work with, so let's go.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Energy Breath

The Berserker will breathe energy from its mouth like a dragon at its opponents.

Side B: Laser Beams

It will fire twin laser beams as projectiles.

Up B: Berserker Rage

It will leap up into the air and slash down with its claws angrily.

Down B: Phazon Blob

It will spit out a blob of Phazon on the ground that will splash on anyone it hits and sit on the stage for a while.

Final Smash: Boss Battle

The Berserker will grow up to its larger boss size and start rampaging around the stage.

Entrance: It will crash through a wall and roar.

Taunts: Up, it will roar at the sky. Side, it will claw side to side, looking for a fight. Down, it will stop and heave for a moment.

Kirby Hat: The top carapace part of their heads.

Kart: Based on one on all fours in attack mode.

Special Move: It will leave a blob of Phazon sitting on the track for anyone to drive over.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle on Norion.

Victory Screen: It will stomp a couple of Federation fighters down and then roar over them.

Losing Screen: Its dying animation will play out.

Color Swaps: A brown knight, a blue knight, a red knight, a green knight, a yellow knight, a black knight, and both of the Lords you come across.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a couple of robots Samus herself controls.

Character Sheet: Phazon Elite

PHAZON ELITE

And now, we have another set of characters, this time hailing from the Prime series of games. You'd think a series like Metroid wouldn't have that many, but we're pretty close to fifty now. Our new ones include:

1. Federation Mech

2. Rundas

3. Ghor

4. Gandrayda

5. Noxus

6. Sylux

7. Spire

8. Trace

9. Kanden

10. Weavel

11. U-Mos

12. Aurora Unit

13. Dark Samus

14. Meta Ridley

15. Metroid Prime

16. Emperor Ing

17. Gorea

18. Chozo Ghost

19. Steambot

20. Ing

21. Liquid Phazon

22. Quad

23. Phazon Elite

24. Berserker Lord

25. Labor Golem

Today we will be covering what is actually three types of enemies, but all in the same class, with the two just being specifically special types. These are the Elite Pirates, and their two even more enhanced compatriots who act as bosses, the Omega Pirate and the Phazon Elite. Basically, they are Space Pirates who have been enhanced by Phazon. I went with the Phazon Elite name because it gets the point across best.

Between them all, we have attacks like massive Phazon energy blasts, massive punches, a wave quake generator to create shockwaves, the ability to teleport, and the ability to absorb energy from attacks. Plenty to work with at the very least.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Phazon Beam

The Elite will fire a blast of Phazon as a projectile.

Side B: Phazon Punch

The Phazon Elite will punch really hard with devastating force. One of the most powerful attacks in the game.

Up B: Phazon Warp

The Elite will warp and teleport to a new location.

Down B: Wave Quake

The Elite will set off its Wave Quake Generator to cause a shockwave.

Final Smash: Omega Pirate

The Elite will get a sudden shot of Phazon into its system, making it bigger and even more powerful and sending it into a rage.

Entrance: It will break out of its containment.

Taunts: Up, it will roar as its Phazon glows. Side, it will inject itself with a little more. Down, it will curl up as if going back into hibernation.

Kirby Hat: Their little helmets.

Kart: Based on their containment units.

Special Move: It will give itself a boost of Phazon, temporarily ramping up all of its stats.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle on Frigate Orpheon.

Victory Screen: It will break free of containment, roar, and then go on a rampage.

Losing Screen: Its dying animation will play out.

Color Swaps: An Elite Pirate's normal colors, with pink Phazon colors, with purple colors, with yellow colors, with green colors, with red colors, an Omega Pirate, and a Phazon Elite.

Thanks for reading! Next up, kind of a continuation of the same idea.

Character Sheet: Quad

QUAD

And now, we have another set of characters, this time hailing from the Prime series of games. You'd think a series like Metroid wouldn't have that many, but we're pretty close to fifty now. Our new ones include:

1. Federation Mech

2. Rundas

3. Ghor

4. Gandrayda

5. Noxus

6. Sylux

7. Spire

8. Trace

9. Kanden

10. Weavel

11. U-Mos

12. Aurora Unit

13. Dark Samus

14. Meta Ridley

15. Metroid Prime

16. Emperor Ing

17. Gorea

18. Chozo Ghost

19. Steambot

20. Ing

21. Liquid Phazon

22. Quad

23. Phazon Elite

24. Berserker Lord

25. Labor Golem

Today, we come to a specific enemy type found in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, security drones built by the Luminoth to guard the Sanctuary Fortress which ended up going haywire when the Ing took over. A large boss version of these stood as the boss of the area, called Quadraxis.

Between the standard enemies and the boss, these machines liked to spin around really, really fast, split their body and head into two separate segments, shoot lasers and missiles, project shields, and stomp to create shockwaves.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Vortex

Since it was their most iconic move, the Quad will start spinning rapidly like a top, functioning similarly to Zelda's or Meta Knight's.

Side B: Missile

The Quad will fire a missile from its face as a projectile.

Up B: Split

The Quad will be able to split itself into two parts, moving about on their own. Pressing it again will reconnect them.

Down B: Stomp

The Quad will raise one of its legs and stomp downward, creating a small shockwave.

Final Smash: Quadraxis

The Quad will grow up to full Quadraxis size and stomp around the stage, attacking.

Entrance: It will detect enemies and come to life.

Taunts: Up, its head will detach and float for a second. Side, it will tuck its legs in and spin for a second. Down, it will lower itself up and down in an almost cute way.

Kirby Hat: He will have four little legs sticking out of his sides.

Kart: Their lower body spinning really fast.

Special Move: Its head will detach, making it immune to damage the body takes.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle, accompanied by two smaller ones, on Planet Aether.

Victory Screen: It will stand victoriously, then go back to its station.

Losing Screen: It will spark and break down.

Color Swaps: It's normal colors, a more gold color, a more silver color, a more gray color, a more white color, a red color, a blue color, and an all-black color.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Space Pirates on glowing blue steroids.

Character Sheet: Liquid Phazon

LIQUID PHAZON

And now, we have another set of characters, this time hailing from the Prime series of games. You'd think a series like Metroid wouldn't have that many, but we're pretty close to fifty now. Our new ones include:

1. Federation Mech

2. Rundas

3. Ghor

4. Gandrayda

5. Noxus

6. Sylux

7. Spire

8. Trace

9. Kanden

10. Weavel

11. U-Mos

12. Aurora Unit

13. Dark Samus

14. Meta Ridley

15. Metroid Prime

16. Emperor Ing

17. Gorea

18. Chozo Ghost

19. Steambot

20. Ing

21. Liquid Phazon

22. Quad

23. Phazon Elite

24. Berserker Lord

25. Labor Golem

Now, we come to the most prominent . . . aspect of the Metroid Prime series, a chemical element originating from the Planet Phaaze, but found on meteorites that crashed on planets like Tallon IV. Phazon has many properties that allow it to mutate and enhance those it affects, though it also has a strong corrupting property as well. In Metroid Prime 3, Samus even encounters some that seems to be alive and moves about on its own.

The specific enemy called Liquid Phazon is capable of shooting blasts of Phazon, infecting those it touches with its influence, and spawning smaller grubs. We also should factor in the other properties of Phazon elsewhere in the series, like the meteors, the giant tentacles, and all the mutative and toxic properties.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Infection

The Liquid Phazon will fire a cloud of itself at its opponents, infecting them. The first will just poison them. The second will stun them. It takes three for them to fall under your control for a short time.

Side B: Phazon Beam

Just like Samus's own, the Liquid Phazon will be able to shoot a powerful beam as a projectile.

Up B: Spawn

The Liquid Phazon will squirt itself up high into the air, leaving behind a small patch of itself to crawl along the stage and infect others.

Down B: Phazon Tentacle

It will spawn one of those Phazon tentacles that will lash out and strike nearby opponents.

Final Smash: Phazon Meteor

Just like all of those seen throughout the series, a meteor will be shot from Phaaze with lots of Phazon on it, and it will crash into the stage.

Entrance: It will split off from a chunk of Phazon.

Taunts: Up, it will bloop upward, like a drip hitting water. Side, it will spew a cloud of itself around it. Down, it will wiggle around a bit.

Kirby Hat: Kirby will be made of the stuff.

Kart: Based on a meteor.

Special Move: It will infect fighters and slow them down by a lot.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Phaaze.

Victory Screen: Phazon will spread across the galaxy.

Losing Screen: The entire planet of Phaaze will be destroyed.

Color Swaps: The normal blue, a bright pink color, the purple I always imagined it was when only reading synopses, a sickly green, a bright yellow, red, eerie black, and pure white.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a fun rare type of enemy.
