Space Pirate Mothership

SPACE PIRATE MOTHERSHIP

Metroid: Zero Mission is functionally the same game, storywise, as the original Metroid. However, the game does add on one major additional level, stripping Samus down to her zero suit and forcing her to sneak around the Space Pirate mothership to get it back.

This stage will be one of those really big ones, with lots of areas for the players to hide, and enemies roving here and there with spotlights that the players will want to avoid, mimicking the aesthetic appearance of Zero Mission itself.

Zero Suit Samus

ZERO SUIT SAMUS

You finally beat the game and defeat Mother Brain. You also got a decently high score, meaning a special scene plays with Samus standing next to her ship, and she starts to take off her Power Suit, revealing that she had been a girl all along.

Samus appearing without her suit would soon become a staple of the series, often as a bonus hard mode unlocked at the end of the game, or simply in certain cutscenes, but the most famous instance came at the end of Metroid: Zero Mission, where the remake added on an entire final level after Mother Brain’s defeat.

As a fighter, Zero Suit Samus will rely on speed and agility over power to compensate for the lack of her suit. Her moveset will pull from the limited abilities she had in Zero Mission as well as the extras added on by Super Smash Bros.

Likelihood rating: Already in.

Metroid

METROID

As you beat Norfair and come to the final region of Tourian, you come across Samus’s true target in all of this, a breed of deadly parasites genetically engineered by the Chozo and appropriated by the Space Pirates, whose existence could spell doom for the entire galaxy.

These are the Metroids, ravenous parasites driven by an insatiable hunger for energy that attack and drain anything they come across. The Chozo discovered them on an alien planet and constructed an AI to be able to control them, only for the AI to turn on them and use the Metroids for its own purposes.

As fighters, the Metroids will be light and floaty, generally in their iconic larval state. Their moveset will pull from all abilities shown by the Metroids in all but their most advanced forms, especially their penchant for draining energy.

Likelihood rating: Strong.

Character Sheet: Zero Suit Samus

ZERO SUIT SAMUS

And now we come to the end of the game-originating characters (at least for now, the other media so far have added a few more in both Mario and Zelda). We have only two newcomers to mention today. They are:

1. Zero Suit Samus

2. Omega Metroid

Samus without her suit on has been a thing since the surprise reveal at the end of the very first game. However, it was Zero Mission that really inspired the sleek blue bodysuit and most of the moveset that inspired her appearance in Super Smash Bros. Her small stunning blaster came from there, that weird little flip move as well, with some of Samus's other moves filling in the rest, like the High Jump Boots and the Grapple Beam. I see no reason to mess with perfection.

Here's the moveset Sakurai mostly came up with:

Standard B: Stun Beam

Will stun the player in place for a second, pulling slightly from the Freeze Beam as well.

Side B: Laser Whip

I suspect some developer fetishes likely helped inspire this move just a little, but I'm going to stick with saying it comes from the Grapple Beam.

Up B: High Jump Boots

Just like in ultimate, her heels will act as the booster.

Down B: Flip

Honestly, I never understood this move until I watched the Zero Mission playthrough. Now, I appreciate this move enough to keep it in.

Final Smash: Samus's Spaceship

There's a few different options for the Final Smash provided by Smash itself, but I think I like the one where she stands on top of her ship and fires a beam down.

Entrance: Her suit will fall off of her.

Taunts: I think her Smash taunts might prove my earlier theory. I'm just going to say, up is adjusting her gun. Side is crouching and looking around. And down is her trying to call for backup.

Kirby Hat: Her ponytail.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship

Special Move: She will fire a stunner that will freeze a racer in place for two seconds.

Spirit Battle: A battle against Samus followed by her on Space Pirate Mothership.

Victory Screen: She will find her suit in containment and free it.

Losing Screen: That one screen where she looks stunned and the suit breaks off of her.

Color Swaps: Four of the bodysuit, four of the tank top. Bodysuits will be blue, pink, black and white, and green. Tank tops will be that dark blue one, the red one with the green hair, the orange one, and the white one.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a special type of Metroid!

Metroid: Zero Mission

METROID: ZERO MISSION

And now, it's time to take on every single "other" game from the Metroid franchise, starting with the remakes and re-releases. First up, we have Metroid: Zero Mission, a functional remake of the very first game but heavily expanded upon, mostly in a major added section at the end of the game, where Samus crash-lands while trying to escape the planet, and then has to sneak through the Space Pirate Mothership.

This is primarily where Zero Suit Samus originates in Smash. Deprived of her suit, Samus has to sneak through the mothership, using an emergency pistol, crawling, and performing backflips to get around. From there the laser whip that appears in her moveset seems to be pulled from Samus's grapple beam, and the rocket heels seem to have just been extrapolated from her design, though maybe combined with something like the High Space Jump.

Ridley returns as a boss in this segment as Mecha Ridley, probably a lead into how he became Meta Ridley in the Prime games. During this battle, he uses his claws and shoots missiles. Another boss takes the form of a Chozo who guards the Chozo Ruins, who tests Samus before she can proceed. This Chozo floats, shocks Samus, and gives her an orb.

The Space Pirate Mothership obviously becomes a new stage here, as well as the Chozo Ruins that Samus must visit.

And that should be about it as far as anything new! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Zero Suit Samus: emergency pistol, crawl, backflip

Ridley: missiles, claws

Chozo: orb, float, shock

Space Pirates

Stages:

Space Pirate Mothership

Chozo Ruins

Thanks for reading! Next up, a recent remake of the original sequel.

Character Sheet: Space Pirate

SPACE PIRATE

And now, let's take a quick break to go over our new characters from the six games that fall under the "Metroid" label (no Primes or remakes). As you can see, we have twenty (or twenty-five to be more accurate, but we'll get to those. They are:

1. Samus Aran

2. Adam Malkovitch

3. Mother Brain

4. MB*

5. Ridley

6. Kraid

7. Raven Beak

8. SA-X

9. Space Pirate

10. Kihunter

11. Metroid

12. X-Parasite

13. Autoad

14. Chozo Soldier

15. Robot Chozo Soldier

16. EMMI

17. Torizo

18. Phantoon

19. Nightmare

20. Metroid Queen

Next up, we have the Space Pirates, or Zebesians (even though canonically the Chozo come from Zebes, so it doesn't make sense, but no matter). These are the main grunts of the space pirate army, tall reptilian beings generally with blades along their arms who can cling to walls and so on. They didn't appear until Super Metroid, but Zero Mission retroactively included them in the previous story arc.

As far as their abilities, Space Pirates come with claws and blades on their arms, can fire energy beams, throw their claws, cling and hop from wall to wall, kick, swim, and fire wave beams. It's also worth noting, for Up B purposes that the 3D games include jetpacks to fly around with, because otherwise I might have used Kihunter wings or something.

Here's the movesets I came up with:

Standard B: Blade Slash

The Space Pirate will slash forward with its blade. If it connects with another body, it will simply slash. If not, it will fly forward a short distance and come back.

Side B: Energy Beam

They will fire the energy beams that they are known for throughout the games.

Up B: Rocket Pack

The space pirate's jetpack from the Prime games will open up, lifting them off the ground and into the air. The player can perform other attacks while in the air.

Down B: Pirate Kick

The Space Pirate will perform a kick, slashing and clawing with its legs if it connects. I figure the clinging to walls can just be a natural thing they are good at.

Final Smash: Horde Attack

A Space Pirate Mothership will appear, opening up and dropping a horde of pirates down onto the stage to ravage and pillage to their heart's content.

Entrance: They will drop down from an airship.

Taunts: Up, they will raise their blade to the sky. Side, they will take up a fighting stance and let out a warning screech. Down, they will crouch and look around.

Kirby Hat: Their heads with their big buggy eyes.

Kart: Based on their weapons and ships.

Special Move: They will be able to attack to the side with their blades.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Space Pirate Mothership.

Victory Screen: A horde of them will raise their blades into the air in victory.

Losing Screen: They will try to run as the planet self-destructs beneath their feet.

Color Swaps: Their teal-ish original color, their green color, their red color, their pink color, their purple Fusion color, their Metroid Prime look, their Prime 3 look, a look based on Weavel.

Thanks for reading! Next up, their winged buglike allies, the Kihunters!
