Metroid Multimedia Adventure Mode

ADVENTURE MODE

We start out with an adult Joey and Diesel, flying together in a bounty hunter ship, taking on a band of Space Pirates, led by a Pirate Boss and Joey’s old enemy Dangelo. During the battle, Joey and Diesel will receive some backup from Federation Marines Kreatz and Mauk, who will help take them down.

After the fight, the four return to Federation Headquarters with the captured villains, and bond over their discovered connection through their departed friend Samus Aran. They will also meet an adult Damara, likewise working at headquarters, who Joey will bond with.

As they are talking, four strangely pale and gaunt figures will enter the building. Damara will recognize them as four crewmen of the GFS Tyr, all of whom had been confirmed dead by Samus on the Planet Aether. Our heroes will investigate them, following them as they open fire on headquarters and break into a vault, stealing four ancient Chozo keys locked inside of it. Our heroes will engage them, but will fail to stop them from getting them back.

Chairman Keaton will question the heroes on what happened, telling them that the keys had been Chozo artifacts given to the Federation by Old Bird. Kreatz, knowing where he is, will take the party to the planet where he lives, and Old Bird will tell them the tale of his history with Samus and how the keys had been an attempt by the Chozo to control the Black Hole technology found in the ruins where Samus and Greed had both disappeared years before, but had been scrapped due to it being too unstable.

Joey, Diesel, Kreatz, Mauk, Damara, and Old Bird then set out, seeking each and every one of the keys. During each, Papa Lightning and the various other Craftsmen will appear as shop owners, upgrading tech and things like that. In each area, you’ll also come across other Bounty Hunters with connections to Samus who join your side, including Armstrong Houston, Zegan Doh, and Bomad. When you corner, each of the four, they will end up mutating into another deceased boss, Lily Thran into the Metroid Mutant, Jeff McCloud into the Megaroid, Miguel Luis Garcia into Bishop, and Klaus Schneider into Knight. Upon each one’s defeat, the spirit of the fallen soldier will thank you.

Finally, the party will reach the Hall of the Gods, using a rebuilt U-Ton provided by the Craftsmen. There they will find that Greed has been slowly reforming over the years after he was torn apart atom by atom by the black hole, and that he had used the powers of the Hall to resurrect four fallen individuals to find the keys that would help restore him fully. Our main heroes will engage in a final battle against him, while Old Bird will sneak around the battle, trying to get to the key and destroy it. His progress will be halted by a resurrected shadow of his old friend Gray Voice, and he will have to defeat him to finally shut down the black hole.

After Greed has been slain and the key destroyed, the black hole will collapse in on itself. In the singularity left behind, a new figure will emerge: our heroes’ long lost friend Samus, able to return to this plane in that moment before it closed forever. She will smile at them all and say, “I told you I’d be back someday.”

Metroid Multimedia Stage Roster

METROID MULTIMEDIA STAGE ROSTER

And here's our stages. If this were a real game, where would you pick to play on first?

Saturday, October 21, 2023

Galactic Federation Headquarters

GALACTIC FEDERATION HEADQUARTERS

In both the Magazine Z comics where Samus’s backstory was told, as well as the Super Metroid comic that introduced Old Bird, the Galactic Federation Headquarters were shown, made up of four tall spires and a central council chamber hanging between them.

This stage will take place on top of the building, primarily on the hanging central chamber, but also using the long connector lines attaching it to the spires. Federation ships will come and go in the background.

Possible theme: No music to work with.

Metroid Multimedia Roster

METROID MULTIMEDIA ROSTER

And here's our roster for all characters appearing outside of the games, mainly in comics and manga. If this were a real roster from a real game, who ya mainin'?

Tuesday, October 17, 2023

Mauk

MAUK

Samus’s team will be first established on a scouting mission, with Samus and Kreatz keeping an eye on a Space Pirate base from a high vantage point, while their third member scouts ahead.

Their third member is Mauk, a member of a species only just recently considered sapient by the Federation, having just left their neanderthal era. Mauk is loyal, strong, and smart, and eventually becomes a squadron leader in his own right.

As a fighter, Mauk will be big and powerful, knocking opponents around with his immense strength. His moveset will pull from his demonstrated abilities shown in the comics.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Kreatz

KREATZ

After establishing Old Bird in the Super Metroid comic, Magazine Z ran a series of comics telling the full backstory of Samus, from the destruction of her world as a child, being raised and enhanced by the Chozo, and her people’s betrayal by Mother Brain, issuing in the events of the games. As far as anyone can tell, this comic, if no others, is considered canon to the games and various elements have been referenced in multiple games since. In this comic, we see Samus briefly join the Federation, becoming part of a team with two partners.

The first of these is Kreatz, a sneaky elven alien capable of projecting energy whips from his fingers, who is treated with mistrust by many because his people were responsible for a past war. Despite this, Kreatz proves a loyal friend and ally to Samus throughout her adventures.

As a fighter, Kreatz will be light and quick, utilizing his energy whips for most of his attacks, his moveset pulling from the various ways he uses them in the comic.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Chozo Elders

CHOZO ELDERS

When Samus is seriously wounded in battle, Armstrong will take her to a planet where an ally of hers lives. This is where we get our first glimpse of the Chozo who helped raise her: Old Bird.

Old Bird, and many other Chozo Elders such as Gray Voice and Platinum Chest, have always been implied to exist in the games, but it was through the comics that they managed to come to life. Old Bird would reappear in Magazine Z, which would tell Samus’s full backstory, with both Gray and Platinum playing major roles as well.

As fighters, they’ll be pretty low on offense, choosing more pacifistic leanings such as defense and healing, though occasionally delving into full combat as Gray Voice did to take on Mother Brain. Their moveset will pull from across the two comics.

Likelihood rating: Does this count as Non-game? Because part of me wants to give it a Could happen.

Character Sheet: Chozo Elders

CHOZO ELDERS

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

The Chozo are among the most important race in the Metroid series, but it's a complicated issue as the bulk of the most important members never appear in the series, having been long dead before it ever got started. Thankfully, we have the Magazine Z comics to fill in those gaps. When Samus was a child, she befriended an old friendly Chozo named Old Bird. After the Space Pirates attacked and killed everyone on her home, she was found by Old Bird and was taken in by him. His companion Gray Voice initially resisted taking her to Zebes, but over time came to love and care for her himself, donating the genetic material that would enhance her enough to wear the power suit and taking on Mother Brain himself to give Samus a chance to survive. Old Bird would survive Mother Brain's betrayal, while Gray Voice would ultimately be killed. Another member of their race, Platinum Chest, would play a major role in the evacuation of the survivors of their people, and is revered by Mauk for his support of his people being accepted into the Federation.

Old Bird is shown with the ability to float in midair, and he also has a healing bubble that he uses to heal a seriously wounded Samus. Gray Voice, during his battle with Mother Brain, dons an ancient suit of armor resembling their statues, complete with a staff that he uses as a melee weapon and with which he can fire energy blasts.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Energy Blast

Gray Voice's staff will be used to fire a blast of energy forward as a projectile.

Side B: Armored Strike

The elder will strike forward with Gray Voice's staff, giving him a long range. His armor will go up during this time, making him invincible temporarily.

Up B: Ascension

The Elder will take up a meditation pose and rise into the air, calling upon their enlightened powers to lift themselves.

Down B: Healing Sphere

The elder will project a healing sphere directly in front of themselves. This sphere will heal anyone caught inside it. Great for team battles.

Final Smash: Chozo Technology

Considering how many times activating ancient Chozo tech plays an important role in the outcome of a given game, I think you could pull from literally any one of them. I kind of like the circle of Chozo statues from Metroid Prime.

Entrance: The elder will appear in meditation.

Taunts: Up, the elder will rise into the air for a second. Side, Pyonchi will appear and run around the Elder. Down, the elder will sit and meditate.

Kirby Hat: Their beaks.

Kart: Based on Chozo tech.

Special Move: They can cast a healing bubble around themselves that protects them from harm and heals them from all status effects for a while.

Spirit Battle: On Tourian, a horde battle.

Victory Screen: A group of Chozo Statues will rise and activate, projecting a sphere of protection around them.

Losing Screen: The Elder will re-enact Gray Voice's death scene.

Color Swaps: Old Bird, Gray Voice, Platinum Chest, Quiet Robe (why not), all in robes. Then all four, but in armor.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's cover the main villain of the Samus & Joey saga.

Character Sheet: Mauk

MAUK

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

Next up, let's cover the third member of Samus and Kreatz's trio, Mauk. Mauk is a huge hulking ape-man with tremendous strength and a sharp mind to go with it. His species were, up until recently, still in their proto-Neanderthal stage, and not considered sapient. Mauk is one of the first of his race to become a marine in the Federation, and feels protective of the Chozo for their advocacy for his people.

In the first part of the story, Mauk mainly uses his physical body to attack, slamming hard into his opponents and lifting them high into the air, also jumping quite high and moving with agility. Later on, after a time skip, he is seeing carrying around a large rifle-like weapon and mounted guns on his shoulders.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Slam

He will thrust forward with his large fists, smashing them to the ground hard.

Side B: Energy Rifle

He will hold up his rifle weapon and shoot forward an explosive projectile.

Up B: Leap

He will use his powerful legs to jump up into the air and slam back down.

Down B: Shoulder Cannons

He will activate his shoulder-mounted cannons and fire them at oncoming enemies, which will fire as a series of beams.

Final Smash: Operation Overkill

The same attack as Kreatz's, just with a little more force to it.

Entrance: He will leap down from above, wearing his camouflage.

Taunts: Up, he will raise his rifle into the air in a war chant. Side, he will cross his arms and look solemn. Down, he will crouch and look around carefully.

Kirby Hat: His hairy mane.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship.

Special Move: He will reach out with his fists and slam someone nearby, making them spin out.

Spirit Battle: On Federation Headquarters, with Samus and Kreatz.

Victory Screen: He will lower his weapon and stand proudly, saying "Mission complete."

Losing Screen: He will stagger as if injured and fall to the ground.

Color Swaps: His normal appearance, the same with red fur, the same with white fur, wearing his camouflage cloak, his older armored form, with the same red fur, with the same white fur, with black fur.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Samus and Joey's resident mechanic.

Character Sheet: Kreatz

KREATZ

And now we have a long list of character who appear exclusively within the Metroid comics, manga, and other non-game media. These will all act as a roster on their own, separate from the standard game roster. They are:

1. Joey Apronika

2. Kreatz

3. Mauk

4. Diesel

5. GFS Tyr Crew

6. Armstrong Houston

7. Zegan Doh

8. Bomad

9. U-Ton

10. Papa Lightning

11. Chozo Elders

12. Greed

13. Bishop

14. Knight

15. Dangelo

16. Pirate Boss

17. Amokmaw

18. Integra

19. Megaroid

In the Metroid manga appearing in Magazine Z, which by all accounts seems to be treated as canon by Nintendo, Samus had a pair of companions during her Federation days that she went on multiple missions with. These two were Kreatz and Mauk. Kreatz was the sneaky, wisecracking member of the team, who frequently faced discrimination because his people had been responsible for a war in the past.

Kreatz's main weapon are his energy whips, which he seems to be able to extend from his fingers. While more simple, he uses them in a number of creative ways. He shoots them forward to strike opponents, swirls them around himself to create a field of damage and protection, and even seems to use them to slow his descent when in midair. He also wears a stealth suit on one occasion to sneak around.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Energy Lash

He will lash his whips straight forward, using them to pierce opponents in front of him.

Side B: Energy Circle

He will spin the whips rapidly around himself, protecting from damage while also dealing damage to those around him.

Up B: Energy Float

He will spin the whips rapidly to his sides, allowing him to lift himself up off the ground and float for a moment.

Down B: Stealth Suit

He will switch on his stealth suit, which will make him mostly invisible for a short time and let him move around unseen.

Final Smash: Operation Overkill

He will do as he and Mauk did to get Samus and the Chozo out and call in Samus's ship to attack the stage remotely and bomb everything in sight.

Entrance: He will rise in his camouflage and take it off.

Taunts: Up, he will hold up his thumb and smirk. Side, he will swirl his whips around himself. Down, he will pull out his binoculars and look around.

Kirby Hat: His hair and ears.

Kart: Based on Samus's ship.

Special Move: He will lash his whips around himself, protecting from damage and striking anyone who gets too close.

Spirit Battle: On Federation Headquarters, with Samus and Mauk.

Victory Screen: He will stand tall and smirk, giving a thumbs up.

Losing Screen: He will stagger as if injured and fall to the ground.

Color Swaps: His normal outfit, a red version, his camouflage hood, a more sandy variant, his stealth suit, a white version, his older appearance, a more green version.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Samus's other companion from the same.

Magazine Z

MAGAZINE Z

Today, we cover Magazine Z, one of the best Metroid comics, and possibly one of the only Nintendo comics to be considered canon to the games, as several characters and plot points from the comic have been referenced in games since. The comic essentially tells the origin story of Samus, from her young childhood all the way down to the start of Metroid: Zero Mission, with the destruction of her home planet and the death of her parents, her adoption by the Chozo, and her brief stint as part of the Federation.

Major characters include Rodney and Virginia Aran, Samus's parents and miners from the planet K-2L. When Ridley and his pirates attack the planet for the precious resource Afloratite, Rodney sacrifices himself by detonating an entire cargo shipment of the stuff to prevent the pirates from taking it, and Virginia is killed defending Samus after the naive little girl comes across Ridley and tries to befriend him.

After them, we have the major Chozo characters. Old Bird, who we met already, is Samus's first Chozo friend and a wise pacifist who teaches her about life. Gray Voice is more serious and stern with her, but as we come to discover, came to care about her deeply and supplied the genetic material used to enhance her, making him her surrogate father. Gray Voice is especially notable for taking up an ancient suit of armor and taking on Mother Brain alone, wielding a staff that he can fire blasts from. Platinum Chest is also important, but not as ingrained in the story as Old Bird and Gray Voice.

Chairman Keaton and Captain Hardy return from the previous comic as well, as major players in the Federation. Samus also has a pair of partners working with her in the federation, Kreatz and Mauk. Kreatz comes from an alien race responsible for a previous war and Mauk's species was only recently recognized as sapient, and both face discrimination for it. Kreatz shoots energy strings from his fingers and uses them in several creative ways, while Mauk is big and huge, slamming and lifting with his immense strength, and later wields a bazooka and shoulder guns. Samus also has a pet named Pyonchi who follows her around, and a young girl named Damara was saved by Samus early on and she crops up again as a new recruit to the academy.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Samus

Kreatz: energy strings

Mauk: slam, lift, bazooka, shoulder guns

Armstrong Houston: possible Samus/Federation Marine echo basis

Pyonchi

Damara

Commander Nemo

Chairman Keaton

Captain Hardy

Adam Malkovitch

Rodney and Virginia Aran

Old Bird/Gray Voice/Platinum Chest: float, healing bubble, armor, staff, staff blast

Mother Brain

Ridley

Big Time Brannigan: arm cannon

Stages:

Federation headquarters

K-2L

Next up, a weird concept for a story, but ended up being a really good time all the same.
