Character Sheet: Raska

RASKA

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

The next character on our docket is Raska, an original character to Cagiva's adaptation of A Link to the Past. In it, Raska is a childhood friend/rival to Link, constantly competing against him in their training. When Link becomes wanted under the orders of Agahnim, Raska sticks by his side and becomes a partner on his adventure to find the Master Sword and into the Dark World. Though a few too many chapters focused on them being pigheaded about their rivalry, theirs was a friendship and dynamic I ultimately enjoyed.

As opposed to Link's training in sword and shield, Raska is purely a martial artist, using a number of moves taught to him by his father Tou. These include an open-hand palm thrust, a quick jab, a two-palm strike, throwing spikes he uses as projectiles, and a thrust with his knee. He also used a shield at one point and thrust it forward as a battering weapon. He could also generally jump pretty high.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Palm Thrust

He will hold his hand out open-handed and thrust it forward, striking his opponents hard in the chest and knocking them backwards.

Side B: Throwing Spikes

He will pull out a few of the spikes he keeps as projectiles and throw them forward, doling out damage on those they hit.

Up B: Martial Arts Leap

He will backflip upwards, using his strong legs to get up above the competition.

Down B: Shield Bash

He will pull out the shield he uses at one point and bash forward with it, protecting himself from damage and knocking foes aside.

Final Smash: Father and Son

He will call in his father, Tou, and the pair of them will double team an opponent in a quick animation.

Entrance: He will drop to the ground and take up a battle-ready stance.

Taunts: Up, he will take up a crane pose for a moment. Side, he will put his hands on his hips and look smug. Down, he will crouch low as if waiting to strike.

Thanks for reading! Next up, his father, who will act as an echo fighter.

Character Sheet: Manga Zelda

MANGA ZELDA

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Just like her male counterpart, this character will be a composite of all the various Zeldas across the various manga, including the doomed Ran version, the minor recurring Cagiva version, the half-sibling of Mishouzaki's Link, the guiding spirit from Oath of Riruto, and all the most prominent Himekawa versions, most of which will likely act as color swaps of each other.

Many of the versions of Zelda are fairly similar to their game counterparts, relying primarily on magical spells with power drawn from the triforce, although some notable versions include the Ran version of Zelda, who took up a more active role and became a partner to Link on his adventure, making use of a club, sword, and rope in her fights (wouldn't you know it, that's the one that gets killed off permanently). She also gets a big axolotl-looking sea monster as a pet. I think that's probably enough for us to work with.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Magical Blast

One thing that the manga Zeldas tend to have in common is that their magic tends to take the form of blasts that they fire from their hands to help Link, so I figure it works as our first attack.

Side B: Sword Thrust

Being a more active participant in most of these, Zelda often wields a sword. I figure she would thrust it forward, like a fencing rapier, given her noble upbringing.

Up B: Flute

In a few of her versions here, she wields the flute known for getting players out of danger. As such, she will carry it on her, and play a note on it to be whisked to higher ground.

Down B: Sea Monster

Her pet sea monster from the Ran manga will emerge before her and flop down on top of any nearby players.

Final Smash: Triforce

All of our Zelda versions that make up this character will appear together with the triforce behind them and fire off a powerful blast of magical energy that will KO their opponent.

Entrance: She will appear trapped in a crystal, before opening her eyes and bursting out of it.

Taunts: Up, she will pray for a moment with the triforce behind her. Side, she will train with her sword with a series of thrusts and parries. Down, she will sit and rest a while.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an original sidekick from the mind of Cagiva Ataru.

Character Sheet: Riruto

RIRUTO

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Next up, we'll cover a Zelda manga protagonist created by someone who really wanted to write Dragon Ball. Riruto is a young boy living in Hyrule a generation after the events of the first game and Link and Zelda have passed away. He stumbles upon the Master Sword in the mountains and draws it, discovering that he is its new wielder. (Technically, in current Zelda lore, I think that would make him a new Link, but this was before all that was established, so . . .).

Riruto mainly learned all of his techniques when he was briefly killed and went to the spirit world to learn from King Ka--I mean, Link. He has the Master Sword and can use it to fire sword beams (very kamehameha-style sword beams), perform spin attack, shoot lightning, and create cyclones. He also has a shield and power bracelet, which he uses to lift a giant pot, and he can grapple and backflip.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Cyclone

Riruto will summon a cyclone from his sword and blast a strong wind across the stage, blowing any nearby opponents backwards.

Side B: Lightning Blade

He will charge up lightning on his sword and stab forward, striking and stunning his opponents in the immediate vicinity while also firing off some discharge.

Up B: Spin Attack

Just like Link's aerial spin attack, Riruto will charge up and spin, gaining himself some lift in the process.

Down B: Power Bracelet

Riruto will gain strength from the power bracelet, hefting a giant pot over his head and smashing it down in front of himself.

Final Smash: Sword Beam

Seeing as the sword beam is a bit more of a super attack in this version of things, we will do it that way. Riruto will charge up his sword with all of his might, Link's spirit appearing behind him and gripping the sword too, and then fire off a beam at full power.

Entrance: A fairy will rise from a pile of stones and Riruto will dig himself out of it.

Taunts: Up, Riruto will heft the Master Sword skyward. Side, he and Kala will grab each other's hands and dance around each other. Down, he will place the Master Sword back in its pedestal.

Thanks for reading! Next up, the manga version of Zelda.

Character Sheet: Manga Link

MANGA LINK

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Today, we'll be covering a variant Link based on his various incarnations across all the manga, acting as a bit of a mishmash of all versions, likely with each of the most prominent being our color swaps. These would include Ran's adventurer with his parrot companion, Cagiva's young training companion of Raska, Mishouzaki's half-elf oddball, Riruto's spirit guide, and any of Himekawa's different Links.

Across the various versions, we do have a bunch of standard stuff, like a slingshot, sword, bow, boomerang, bombs, a magic wand, and such, from all of the games the manga were based on. A few distinct items to consider though include Watto, Ran Link's parrot companion, the White Sword and Hyper Magical Sword of the Mishouzaki Link, and the ability to freeze time. I think we have enough to manage a distinct moveset.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: White Sword

He will heft the big old wedge-shaped White Sword used in Mishouzaki's manga, slashing forward and dealing heavy battering damage with it.

Side B: Apple Bushel

Based on Himekawa's Link to the Past Link's dream of becoming an apple farmer, Link will heft a bushel of his apples and toss them forward across the ground, tripping up enemies coming his way.

Up B: Watto

Based on the Ran manga's parrot companion, Watto will appear, hook his talons around Link's collar, and heft him up into the air.

Down B: Time Freeze

A counter of sorts, Link will put his guard up. Anyone who tries to strike him will be frozen in place momentarily, leaving Link open to attack them.

Final Smash: Triforce

Although the Triforce has been interpreted in some pretty radically different ways across the various manga, it has still maintained a significant presence as an item of immense power. All the various Link's will come together and combine their swords as the Triforce appears, launching their target from the screen.

Entrance: The Link will emerge from a manga page.

Taunts: Up, Watto and his family will circle around the Link. Side, Link will practice some of the stances he and Raska learned. Down, Link will rest under an apple tree.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover an inheritor of Link's powers from a more Dragon Ball age.

Character Sheet: Captain Stalfos

CAPTAIN STALFOS

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Stalfos are a populous race of enemies appearing all throughout the Zelda series, generally presented as the skeletons of fallen warriors brought to life by Ganon's dark magic. They have taken several forms throughout the years, but probably one of the most notable recurring forms is the Stalfos pirate captain. This includes Cap'n from the Oracles games, LD-002G Scervo from Skyward Sword, and Captain Stalfos from the Tingle games. I think "Captain Stalfos" gets the point across best, so I'm going with that name.

I kind of overlooked them at first, as they are just an offshoot of a regular enemy, and are often simply supporting characters with a couple of boss fights thrown in, but Cap'n got a bit of focus in Himekawa's adaptation, telling the story of his romance with Queen Ambi, so I think he still works well. Frequently, the Captain Stalfos wields a cutlass and a hook, though Skyward Sword shakes this up by making his weapons electrical. He also has explosive barrels that Tingle uses to defeat him, and in the Oracle games and comics, he is trapped by sea storms, events that have played into some of our other seafarers, so I think we can work with it.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Electric Sword

Charging his sword with electricity based on Scervo from Skyward Sword, he will slash forward and stun his opponents with electricity.

Side B: Hook

He will grab with his second main weapon, hooking players and holding them to him so he can dole out successive attacks.

Up B: Sea Storm

A storm similar in design to those seen in the Oracle games will appear around him and send him spinning up into the sky.

Down B: Explosive Barrel

He will roll forward one of the explosive barrels from Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, which will explode on contact.

Final Smash: Pirate Ship

His ship will swoop in, bombarding the stage with its cannons, before crashing into it. The captain's pirate stalchildren will then flood off the boat and attack the players on stage.

Entrance: He will be sitting in his captain's chair as a corpse and then suddenly come to life.

Taunts: Up, he will ring the bell Link collects for him. Side, he will raise his sword as his pirates gather around him. Down, he will fall apart into a pile of bones.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll move on to those characters originally from the manga.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an enemy variant who has shown up quite a few times at this point.

Character Sheet: Ricky

RICKY

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

In the Oracles games, Link had a set of animal companions that he could use to get around, including Ricky the kangaroo, Moosh the flying bear, and Dimitri the Dodongo. Ricky was probably the most popular among them, carrying Link around in his pouch and using a pair of boxing gloves to fend off enemies. When Himekawa Akira's adaptation of the games came around, Ricky found his place as the "Ron" to Link's "Harry" and Maple's "Hermione."

The manga also expanded upon his in-game abilities by giving him a multi-jab attack and the ability to create a tornado with his fist. He could also tuck into his own pouch to avoid damage, ski, and he could call upon Moosh to help him out in a jam. I think that works well enough to get a moveset together.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Tornado Fist

Ricky will charge up his fist and punch forward. Depending on how long he charged, a tornado of varying size will burst from it.

Side B: Multi-Jab

Ricky will unleash a volley of quick jabs at his opponent, racking up damage.

Up B: Moosh

While he will have some pretty solid jumps, Moosh the bear will come in for this one, picking up Ricky by his nape and carrying him upwards.

Down B: Pouch

As a defensive move, Ricky will tuck inside his own pouch to avoid damage. He will also pull nearby items and projectiles in with him to use later.

Final Smash: Boxing Champion

Based more on his manga dreams of becoming a boxing champion, he will beat his fists together and then launch into a volley of attacks on his opponent, similar to Donkey Kong's or Little Mac's.

Entrance: He will hop onto the stage and do some training jabs.

Taunts: Up, he will throw his fist into the air in celebration. Side, he will hop back and forth with his fists up in a defensive position. Down, he will rest and wipe his forehead.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an enemy variant who has shown up quite a few times at this point.

Character Sheet: Jolene

JOLENE

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Next up is Jolene, another secondary character from the games who got a boost in her manga portrayal. In the games, Jolene is a pirate captain dead set on hunting down Linebeck for unspecified reasons, though there is some hint that they were lovers and he ran out on her. The manga adaptation by Himekawa Akira is much more blatant about this, with her acting as part of the effort to save Linebeck after he becomes possessed by Bellum.

Across the game and manga, her abilities don't vary too much, with her attacking the S.S. Linebeck frequently with her ship's cannons and then dueling Link with her twin swords, generally in a jumping slash or in a block. However, her presence in the manga did remind me that she is very much a close associate of Linebeck, so there are parts of his moveset that can just as easily be attributed to her, so, I think we can make it.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Ship's Cannons

One of her ship's cannons will appear and fire a projectile forward at high speed, just like Linebeck's. but probably a little stronger.

Side B: Jumping Slash

She will leap forward and slash with her twin blades, just like in the game.

Up B: Tornado

Borrowed a bit from Linebeck, but let's be honest, if he can be warped around the map by tornado, I'm sure it's a common trend for pirates like her too.

Down B: Guard

She will hold up her two blades in an X-shape in front of her, blocking and parrying any hits coming her way.

Final Smash: Pirate Ship

Her ship will appear in the background, racing up to the stage and bombarding it as if she had spotted Linebeck aboard it. (Bonus points if Linebeck was actually in the fight).

Entrance: She will stand at the prow of her boat and jump off.

Taunts: Up, she will stand proudly with her sword in the air. Side, she will cross her arms and look off to one side. Down, she will let out a frustrated growl.

Thanks for reading! Next, yet another companion from the Oracles games who got a boost.

Character Sheet: Maple

MAPLE

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

We'll start off with Maple, a game character from the Oracle of Ages and the Oracle of Seasons, most memorable for accidentally crashing into Link at certain points and starting up a minigame where she and Link race to gather more of their dropped items. She served a witch as her errand girl, and was even referenced as the mentor of Irene in A Link Between Worlds. In the Oracle of Seasons manga by Himekawa Akira, she acted as a main party member to Link alongside Ricky the Kangaroo.

As a young witch, she can, of course, fly around on brooms, cast spells, and provide potions. Among her spells, courtesy of the manga, she can create cushions, lift heavy objects, summon demons, create an army of false monsters, and peer through a crystal ball at events happening far away. I think that should do us.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Cushion Spell

She will cast a spell forward, summoning a cushion and walloping her opponents with it right in their face.

Side B: Crash

Based on her actions in-game, she will speed forward on her broom and crash into the first thing she connects with. All items held by the opposing party will be dropped.

Up B: Broom

She will hop on her broom and fly away. Her broom will act as a platform that any other player will be able to use at their own risk to ride with her.

Down B: Potion

She will down a potion from her mistress and heal herself of some damage.

Final Smash: Army of Monsters

She will cast an illusion around the stage of an army of monsters surrounding her opponents. These monsters will not actually harm the opponent, but will make things confusing and obscure the player's vision while Maple herself flies around hitting people.

Entrance: She will race in and crash for a second

Taunts: Up, she will cross her arms and stick her nose in the air. Side, she will fix her hat and grin excitedly. Down, she will peer into her crystal ball.

Thanks for reading! Next up, another secondary character who didn't quite get in before.

Purely for the sheer volume of entries here, I decided to do a separate section for all the Zelda 4-Komas. If you don't remember from the Mario series, 4-Koma manga are sort of like newspaper comics, as they are generally short 4-panel manga that tell a joke. Other Zelda Manga

OTHER ZELDA MANGA

Today, we have about six other random Zelda manga that have come out over the years, which couldn't be attributed to one mangaka or were part of a continuous series. This includes the 1986 Legend of Zelda manga by Susumu Kobayashi, the 1988 Adventure of Link manga by Shigoto Daisuke, the 1993 A Link to the Past manga by Taguchi Junko, the 1993 Link's Awakening manga by Fujiaka Masato, the 2012 Ocarina of Time 3D manga by Ming Yukawa, and The Legend of Zelda: An Original Version, a 1987 alternative take on the original game written by Kitadono Mitsunori.

The first five offer up little special. They basically act as visual guides for the games they are based on, or quick little promotional pieces. "The Original Version" however, is a bit like the Mishouzaki stuff, where it takes a lot of liberties. Link is constantly accompanied by a young thief named Com, eventually revealed to be the comic's version of Impa, who can steal things, throw rocks, supply Link with potions, and even bites a tentacle at one point. Link himself can also freeze enemies in time, and they are also accompanied by a crystal bird named Cryckon, an avatar of the fairy Fonti. Ganon takes the form of more of a lion-man named Ganos, who wields a sword, breathes fireballs, breathes thick black smoke, and can trap people in jewels.

Anyway, that's about it. Here's what we've got so far:

The Legend of Zelda (Mishouzaki)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (MISHOUZAKI)

And now, for the real weird one. Way back when all you had to go on were little eight bit sprites and a sprawling map, I suppose it was natural for someone to interpret it all drastically differently than what is seen as core Zelda canon today. This manga, written by Mishouzaki Yuu, was published in 1989 and covered the events of the first two Zelda games, sort of. Here, Hyrule was a land of humans and elves, where horribly egregious racism against elves was commonplace. Ganon was a nightmare-fuel/lovecraftian-horror demon who had broken through into the human would by the oh so sinful act of a human and an elf making love!

Anyway, the story stars Link, the half-elf son of the scandalous trespassers, one being an elf warrior named Rune, and one being the last Queen Zelda, in a torrid affair, both of whom were murdered by Ganon, leading to Link never knowing either of them. And yes, this does mean that the Princess Zelda of this story is his half-sister, and yes, he does not know this, and yes, he has a crush on her. Do with that what you will. He has two distinct swords unique to this manga, his father's White Sword, a big old wedge-shaped thing, and the Hyper Magical Sword, something he just kinda found in a ruin one chapter that shoots lightning and has to be the most over-powered weapon in the story.

Zelda is a fairly constant companion throughout the story, mostly shown wielding a sword and casting powerful magic with her triforce. Other secondary character include a very young Impa who acts as a mom figure to both Link and Zelda. She is part of Hyrule's ninja force, and can throw shurikens, but that's about it. There's also Grey and Pell, a pair of siblings, and their grandfather Jenard, the man who kept Rune's sword for Link after he died. Then there's Kana, Link's aunt and an elven warrior. We only really see her send fairies to heal on the page, though it's implied she can do stuff. And a few other random NPCs, but nothing really to work with over all.

Ganon in the first story is more of a powerful malevolent force than a being, and so we don't have much to work with apart from a big black overwhelming cloud with a boar face. In the second story though, he inhabits a body that I guess is supposed to be this story's version of Dark Link, who calls himself Ganon's Heart, and who can extend his arms, absorb magical energy, float and teleport, and steals the White Sword to use for himself.

It's mostly a lot of familiar names for locations here, so at least they got that right.

Here's what we've got so far:

Oath of Riruto

OATH OF RIRUTO

Oath of Riruto is a Legend of Zelda manga. Technically. It stars a bunch of characters who are not Link or Zelda, and is set a generation after the events of the first game, with Link, Zelda, and Ganon only really having minor cameos within it. As ghosts. And it was written by Furusawa Junya and Munesue Jin, who clearly wanted to be writing Dragon Ball, but were writing Legend of Zelda for some reason instead. (All that aside, I actually had a lot of fun with this thing and you should totally check it out.)

Oath of Riruto stars Riruto, a young boy growing up in Hyrule a generation after the events of the first game, and who grew up on stories of the great hero Link and his battle with Ganon. One day, he comes upon the Master Sword high in the mountains, and is able to draw it from its pedestal just like Link. He then gets killed by a group trying to free Ganon, and finds himself in the spirit world where he is trained by Link to use the sword and then restored to life (not unlike a certain Goku and King Kai arc). Riruto can wield the sword, shoot lightning from it, perform a spin attack, create a cyclone with it, and fire a sword beam. He also has a shield, the power bracelet, a giant pot, and can grapple and perform a backflip.

He grew up with childhood friend named Kalin, who is the inheritor of Zelda the way he is Link's, but is sadly mostly a damsel in distress for most of the story, only giving off a strong energy aura toward the end. Along his journey, he also picks up three companions: Gonza, a thief who tries to steal his sword (totally not Yamcha); Kala, a girl with a shapeshifting ferret; and Cho, a fat but strong guy (totally not Yajirobe). Gonza wields a sword, throwing daggers, and bombs, tries to crush Riruto with a rock, and dashes really fast. Kala's ferret can change into a giant worm or a dragon, and she herself can punch, and perform a pile driver. Cho is mostly just a companion to Kala, assisting her with a rope he can control and a power bracelet.

Our main villains are a group of four working to resurrect Ganon: Nabat, Haggis, Glasgow, and Hoody. Or at least, they were, until Haggis got power hungry, betrayed his companions, and absorbed Ganon's power into himself, making himself the most Dragon Ball Dragon Ball villain I've ever seen. Glasgow and Hoody go out pretty quick, murdered by Haggis, while Nabat summons a lightning storm in the process of the resurrection. Haggis, on the other hand, rides a steed, wears a protection amulet, can punch, flick really hard, fire arrows from a bow, perform a head bash, strike with the wind, kick, call down a lightning strike, fire a kamehame--excuse me, energy blast, move at lightning speed, and create an energy shield.

It's so Dragon Ball, but I still loved it so much. Anyway, here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Manga Link: slingshot, sword, shield, bow, boomerang, bombs, magic wand, Watto, become a fairy, healing magic, thunder, fly on shield, raft, Link to the Past-related stuff

The Legend of Zelda (Himekawa)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (HIMEKAWA)

Himekawa Akira is probably the most prolific mangaka out of all that have ever written for the Legend of Zelda, starting all the way back with an adaptation of Ocarina of Time and still writing for them even today. Most of them have stuck pretty closely to the plots of their respective games, not taking the massive liberties the previous works had done, but he still found ways to work in new characters or give characters focuses they wouldn't have otherwise gotten.

First up, we have his adaptation of Ocarina of Time. The story follows the plot of the game pretty much to the letter, with maybe a bit more focus on Sheik's character development, and so on. The biggest newcomer we have to focus on came from a special bonus chapter, where Link and Navi encounter a young Watarara (basically Ritos before Ritos were a thing) named Rouro, the prince of his tribe who hadn't learned how to fly yet. He could eventually fly, peck with his beak, smack with a flyswatter, and trap people in a bag, all part of him acting out due to his insecurities about flying.

Himekawa's Majora's Mask followed the story pretty much as is, if maybe a bit more blatant about the Happy Mask Salesman's evil intentions. His Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages adaptations came as a consecutive series, with the same Link acting as the hero. Through the first, Maple the witch and Ricky the Kangaroo acted as full-time companions, with Maple flying on her broom, casting spells to create cushions, lift things, summon a demon, and create false monsters, and using a crystal balls to see visions. Ricky could leap really high, throw a tornado punch and multi-jabs, tuck into his own pouch, and ski. In the second, Link met his own ancestor, a hero named Sir Raven, who could wield a sword, ride a horse, go fishing, use a fish hook as a lockpick, plant mystery seeds, and use an axe and a peashooter. The Pirate Captain from the game also got a bit of focus, with him throwing a dagger, and using a sword and hook. I'll need to think on him for a bit.

Four Swords was fun, giving the four Links their own distinct personality and having a bit of a TMNT dynamic among them. Minish Cap was also good, though apparently they don't exist in the same continuity, seeing as Vaati ended up being redeemed at the end and going back to being Ezlo's apprentice, while Four Swords still had him as the sealed demon. A Link to the Past had probably my favorite out of all the original characters. Probably taking inspiration from Ishinomori's Roam, Link gains a companion in Ghanti, a thief girl who shifts between being an ally and adversary of Link, who learns her destiny is to wield the silver arrow. She wields a sword and dagger, and the silver arrows of course, turns into a wolf when in the Dark World due to her impure heart, gets transformed into a monster by the villains, and is healed by an apple.

Phantom Hourglass leaned a bit more focus on Jolene, being much more open about the romantic aspect of her and Linebeck's relationship. She does all the things she did before, but it does get me thinking a bit more about her, and even wondering if she might not be at least a semi-clone for Linebeck. Skyward Sword is basically just a short little prequel to the game included in the Hyrule Historia, and Twilight Princess is still ongoing, which made it a bit harder for me to look into, but as far as I can tell, there are no new original characters there, at least none that give the possibility of a moveset.

That should be it. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Manga Link: slingshot, sword, shield, bow, boomerang, bombs, magic wand, Watto, become a fairy, healing magic, thunder, fly on shield, raft, Link to the Past-related stuff

Zelda: club, rope, sword, flute, spells, transform, sea monster, magic

The Legend of Zelda (Cagiva)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (CAGIVA)

Ah, now this is more like it. If you ever want just a quick fun read with good characters and story, Cagiva Ataru's adaptations of A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening are the manga for you. While they're not quite the quality of the Himekawa manga that we'll talk about later, these are still a really good time. It ran starting in 1995, generally following the plot of both games, though with a few key differences.

Cagiva's A Link to the Past adaptation follows a trio of companions as they fight against the forces of Ganon and Agahnim, venturing into the Dark World to save Zelda and the land of Hyrule. These three are Link, his best friend and martial artist Raska, and Captain Arjuna, leader of the royal guard and Kakashi-esque mentor to the two of them. Link is pretty standard, training in using a sword and shield and all the other tools of the game, while Raska uses more physical martial arts moves, including a palm thrust, knee attack, jab, two-palm strike, a shield thrust, and throwing spikes used as projectiles. Captain Arjuna, while constantly fighting alongside the boys, never seems to get any clear focus on any of his attacks outside of basic sword strikes, the artwork instead preferring to show what the boys are doing. Luckily, though, he is the leader of the Hylian Soldiers, and we might be able to do something with that.

We have a few other supporting characters here, such as Princess Zelda herself, a damsel in distress for most of the plot; Link's Uncle, who straight up died in this version of the story; Kanika, a scientist and researcher trapped in the dark world who becomes a companion and almost traitor to our heroes at one point. Sadly, he is a very distinctly inactive character, so not much there. And we have Tou, Raska's father, who taught him everything he knows and thus knows all of it too. From there, we have Agahnim and Ganon as the villains, but they're pretty standard to the game.

Cagiva's version of Link's Awakening sticks much closer to the source, with barely any original characters. We see Link decide to leave home for a while, leaving Raska and Arjuna behind, and set out to sea. He ends up on Koholint Island and develops a rather sweet romance with Marin, making him struggle with the choice to wake the Wind Fish or not. There is a couple of new characters, like Felicia the fairy, and Master Drona, who punches and throws his sword, but that's about it.

Anyway, that's about it. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Manga Link: slingshot, sword, shield, bow, boomerang, bombs, magic wand, Watto, become a fairy, healing magic, thunder, fly on shield, raft, Link to the Past-related stuff

The Legend of Zelda (Ran)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (RAN)

I am really excited, because today, we get to start the manga, which was a pleasantly surprising branch of the Zelda series that I got to discover when doing this series. Well, most of it. Like all things, there are some weirdies out there, and this one . . . left a bad taste in my mouth. Like, it started good, but the mangaka, Ran Maru, had a horribly itchy trigger finger when it came to character deaths, and most character arcs ended up going nowhere because he decided to kill the character off in a BIG SHOCKING TWIST at the end of a random chapter. A lot.

Anyway, Ran's run as the Zelda mangaka was published in 1986 by Wanpaku Comics. He wrote two runs, the first based on The Legend of Zelda, the second based on Zelda II: The Adventure of Link as a sequel to the first adventure. The first one mostly follows the game it's based on, the second one took a few more liberties (needless to say this is where all the random deaths happen).

Both comics star a Link that is an adventurer by trade, who happened to wander into Hyrule just as Impa was fleeing from Ganon's forces. He wields a slingshot, sword, shield, bow, boomerang, bombs, and a magic wand. He is also constantly accompanied by a parrot named Watto. In the second story, he could also become a fairy, use healing magic, summon thunder, fly on his shield, and use a raft.

Zelda also appears in the story, not doing much for the first game, but joining Link on his adventure for most of the second, wielding a club, rope, sword, and flute, casting spells, transforming herself, and riding on the back of a giant sea monster. Sadly, she dies. Then Link carries her body around for a couple of chapters pursuing the means to resurrect her. Then she just kinda gets dropped in lava during a random battle and forgotten about. Then the second Zelda (the sleeping one) takes her place as ruler, and Link decides not to use the Triforce to resurrect her for some reason, even though it was established it could. At least, it sounded like it could.

We got to see a few original supporting characters. For the first comic and the second, Link and Zelda had a recurring companion named Biri, or Billy, a local village boy who guides Link through Hyrule and becomes Zelda's captain of the guard for his service. He wielded a sword, and summoned a mob of townspeople, complete with torches, pitchforks, and battering rams, to storm Ganon's Castle and help Link. Another was Hercules, who tries to crush Link with a rock. Then there's Couscous, a moleman who joins Link and a companion and gives Link a whole backstory about wanting to become human. Then he dies. A chapter later. And you just forget about him. He could cast spells, claw, and bite.

Then there was Birina, a local village girl who I think was supposed to be a female counterpart to Biri, but didn't do much. Then there was Gump (Name spelling is mostly guesswork here, I read this through a video where a reader translated it all for you, but since it was spoken, I could only go off what they read), a wolfman and sword master who trained Link in everything he knows, could fight with a sword and a training staff, and could flip high into the air to surprise opponents. He dies too. Then there was Shemlon (Also uncertain on name), a blacksmith living in a local village, who could work a forge, enchant the swords he created, wield those swords, and use them to reflect attacks. He did not die, surprisingly enough.

Ganon is the main villain of the story, both technically. In the first, he could burn with fire, throw a magic blast, disappear, and fly with wings. In the second, a masked figure known only as Ganon's Minion led his forces in trying to resurrect him, and its eventually revealed that he is the man who put the sleeping Zelda under her curse, and that he would eventually become Ganon (timey-wimey shenanigans). He could shock his opponents, summon a storm, teleport, and shapeshift, and in the end, Ganon's hand bursts from his stomach as he is freed once again. A lot of common minions appear, including Moblins, Goriyas, Stalfos, Wizzrobes, Octoroks, Vires, Zoras, Darknuts, Zols, Peahats, and Lynels.

At least one noteworthy location unique to the comic is a gigantic statue of Ganon that acts as his castle.

Anyway, here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Manga Link: slingshot, sword, shield, bow, boomerang, bombs, magic wand, Watto, become a fairy, healing magic, thunder, fly on shield, raft

Zelda: club, rope, sword, flute, spells, transform, sea monster

Biri: sword, torches, pitchforks, battering rams

Couscous: spells, claw, bite

Birina

Gump: trained Link, sword, training staff, flip

Shemlon: forge, enchant swords, sword, reflect

Ganon/Ganon's Minion: burn, magic blast, disappear, fly, shock, storm, teleport, shapeshift, Ganon's hand

Stages:

Character Sheet: Water Monster

WATER MONSTER

There's not much point to a big returning character review this time around, so let's cover the small handful of characters we were able to pull from the Legend of Zelda cartoon series created by DiC, and the few western comics published under the Zelda series banner. We have eleven to add, including:

1.     TV Link

2.     TV Zelda

3.     King Harkinian

4.     Queen Seline

5.     Roam

6.     Sing

7.     Doof & Automaton

8.     Sleezenose

9.     TV Ganon

10.  Goriya

11.  Water Monster

Today, we will finish off with a boss of sorts. In one episode, King Harkinian spends a lot of time and resources building a giant water park for the kingdom. Unfortunately, on opening day, the water seems to come alive and attack the visitors. Link and Zelda investigate and discover that the park had inadvertently being drawing water from a magic spring where Sprite's fairy clan lived. In response, the fairies enchanted the water to fight back against whoever was taking it.

The water takes on various shapes, like a humanoid figure, a snake, and a crab, grabbing guests with tentacles and dragging them beneath the surface, and flooding and splashing around everywhere. Thanks to the fairy magic in it, it could even shoot lightning at one point. I think we have more than enough to work with, so let's go.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Great Splash

The monster will surge forward and collapse into a big powerful splash, knocking its opponents back.

Side B: Crab Claw

It will take on the form of a giant crab, and snap forward with its giant pincers, crushing opponents between them.

Up B: Snake Rise

The water will rise up like a giant snake crossed with a water spout, before bursting at the top of its climb and raining back down, forming on the ground.

Down B: Tentacle

It will grab an opponent with a long tentacle of water and drag them inside itself, drowning them in its belly.

Final Smash: Flood

The Monster will grow big and massive, filling the entire background and then flooding the stage.

Entrance: Three fairies will surround a puddle and raise it up.

Taunts: Up, it will turn into a fountain with a couple of Hylian kids laughing on top of it. Side, the fairies controlling it will circle it merrily. Down, it will splash down into a contented puddle.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's put our new rosters together.
