Stalchildren

STALCHILDREN

Upon leaving the Lost Woods, Link will find himself in a huge open plain called Hyrule Field, a hub of sorts that connects all the major Hylian regions. He’ll need to be quick about it, however, as the moment night falls, skeletons will rise from the ground.

These are the Stalchildren, smaller and less powerful skeleton enemies than the more standard Stalfos. They tend to be a recurring hazard in many games during the night cycle, and even act as something of the “standard race” of the Ikana region of Majora’s Mask.

As fighters, they will be echoes of the Stalfos, albeit smaller and weaker in most aspects.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Character Sheet: Stalchildren

STALCHILDREN

And here's all the characters that I gave a definitive YES to during my second chance round. They are:

1.       Fierce Deity Link

2.       Kalin

3.       Darbus

4.       Ralis

5.       Gulley

6.       Osfala

7.       Irene

8.       Rosso

9.       Queen Oren

10.   Paya

11.   Rune

12.   Kanan

13.   Talon

14.   Ingo

15.   Gwonam

16.   Tetra’s Crew

17.   Kokiri

18.   Goron

19.   Zora

20.   Rito

21.   Korok

22.   Gerudo

23.   Stalchildren

24.   Ganon Blight

Next up, we have the Stalchildren, the smaller skeleton enemies often found rising from wilder areas when night falls. They will be smaller, less powerful echoes of Stalfos.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Head Throw

Their heads are bigger compared to their bodies, maybe that means it would hurt more?

Side B: Magic Shroud

I do believe there are magician versions of these guys too.

Up B: Flying Leap

Definitely wouldn't get as much lift on the jump.

Down B: Stalchild

Hmm, forgot this was a thing. Could change it into a self-defense thing where it falls apart to avoid damage?

Final Smash: Blood Moon

Keep it mostly the same.

Entrance: It will start as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Up, it will stand up straight and salute. Side, it will put out its arms like a zombie. Down, it will collapse into bones for a second.

Kirby Hat: Their skulls as a hat.

Kart: Made out of bone.

Special Move: They can summon more of their brethren to rise from the track behind you.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Hyrule Field.

Victory Screen: They will stand and salute like soldiers of Ikana.

Losing Screen: They will burn up in the rising sun.

Color Swaps: Every version of Stalchild across the series, starting with Ocarina's model.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Ganon Blight infests the stage.

Sir Raven

SIR RAVEN

Himekawa continued on to do adaptations of Majora’s Mask and the two Oracles games, Majora and Seasons not offering up many new characters, but Oracle of Ages adding in the plot element of Link meeting and fighting alongside his ancient ancestor in Past-Hyrule, a heroic knight leading the rebellion against Queen Ambi’s tyrannical rule.

This is Sir Raven, a Hyrulean knight who came to Labrynna and watched as Veran-possessed-Nayru twisted Ambi’s mind and influenced her into enslaving her people and forcing them to construct her black tower, becoming the leader of the resistance against her.

As a fighter, he will be very similar in most of his stats to Link, also heavily relying on his swordwork. His moveset will pull from his demonstrated sword abilities as well as a few other abilities such as his love for fishing and the mystery seeds he taught the young girl Roperi to plant.

Likelihood rating: Non-game

Jabu-Jabu's Belly

JABU-JABU'S BELLY

When Link first visited Zora’s Domain in Ocarina of Time, he found that the Zora princess Ruto has gone missing, swallowed up by the Zoras’ god, a giant fish named Jabu-Jabu. Link approaches the fish, plunging himself into its waiting maw to rescue her.

A few stages are here simply because their concept is just too cool for me to pass up. This one will be set inside Jabu-Jabu’s belly, with the floor and walls made up entirely of flesh. The large spiky platform that takes Link up to the boss battle works well as the central platform, and there will be tendrils hanging from the top of the stage as hazards.

Twinrova

TWINROVA

As Nabooru gives Link the silver gauntlets to get through her temple, a pit of quicksand suddenly appears under her feet, dragging her down inside it. This pit was summoned by a pair of Gerudo witches, sisters who serve Ganondorf faithfully.

These are Kotake and Koume, Ganondorf’s nursemaids and loyal henchwomen. They act as the primary bosses of the Spirit Temple, using fire and ice magic respectively. When they can’t take down Link separately, they will combine into a single, more powerful sorceress called Twinrova. The pair will appear again as major players in the Oracles games, manipulating Veran and Onox in order to resurrect their king.

As fighters, Kotake and Koume will fight either as a tandem pair or combine into Twinrova, changing up their stats but not their moveset. Their moves will be drawn from their abilities as demonstrated in-game.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Black Tower

BLACK TOWER

Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons were a bit of a pair of oddballs. They were sister games similar to the Pokemon game pairs, but they both included entirely different maps, characters, and stories. Oracle of Ages mostly focused on the plot of Veran, who used Nayru’s power to travel back in time and build a giant black tower in the center of the kingdom, which would allow her to rule Labrynna in the modern day.

This stage will be based on that. It will be set atop the tower, as Queen Ambi and other NPCs are seen constructing it in the background. Occasionally, a time warp from the game will appear on the stage. The moment it is touched, the stage will be warped between the two eras of the game, mostly changing up the visual aesthetic of the stage and what NPCs appear.

Potential theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynIuao60Tkg

*Disclaimer: It's been a bit since I picked out the themes, there a good chance the videos have been taken down. If so, it's generally the main theme you would typically attach to either the level or the overall game it represents.

Veran

VERAN

On his way to find Nayru, Link bumped into Zelda’s aide Impa. Impa seemed to be acting weird, but Link thought nothing of it until an evil witch controlling Impa revealing herself, taking possession of Nayru’s body and taking her back in time to change the past.

This is Veran, the villain of Oracle of Ages and counterpart of Seasons’ Onox. She will act as the primary villain for most of the plot, though when the game is linked with Seasons, it will be revealed that she and Onox were mere pawns to resurrect Ganon.

As a fighter, she will have good flying abilities thanks to her wings and she will make use of a lot of dark magic. Her moveset will pull from her final boss fight at the end of Ages, her ability to possess others, and many other abilities displayed throughout.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Ralph

RALPH

Link approaches Nayru while she sings, encountering Nayru’s childhood friend and loyal bodyguard resting against a tree, a hotheaded guy in funny clothes who looks at Link as a rival.

This is Ralph. When Nayru ends up kidnapped by the game’s villain, he leaps into action, determined to rescue her first before Link does. As a result, he and Link encounter each other multiple times throughout the game, often working their way through the same dungeons.

Considering he is racing Link through most of the same locations, logic would dictate he is using most of the same tools Link is using to get there, making him a natural choice to take on the unique mechanics appearing in Oracle of Ages. As a fighter, he will be quick and agile, slightly more so than Link is.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Nayru

NAYRU

Over on the Ages side of things, the story begins with Link traveling through the land of Labrynna, where he encounters a blue-haired maiden singing so beautifully that her voice entrances all of the animals in the forest around her.

This is Nayru, the Oracle of Ages and the reincarnation of the Goddess of Wisdom. Like Din, she is our damsel in distress for most of the game, but thanks to Veran’s whole thing of possession, we get to see this Oracle in action a little throughout the game.

As a fighter, she probably won’t be quite as powerful or quick as Din, as she doesn’t have the whole toned dancer’s body thing going on, meaning she will likely rely more on magic and subtle moves. Her moveset will pull from her own abilities, like singing and time travel, with maybe a little of Veran mixed in.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Captain Stalfos

CAPTAIN STALFOS

As Link explores Subrosia, he might come across the House of the Pirates, where a number of Stalfos pirates dwell. Turns out, they’d been stranded there for centuries, and if you talk to their captain, you just might fight a surprising connection to Queen Ambi of Oracle of Ages.

This special type of “Pirate Stalfos” is a trope that would recur again and again throughout the series, either as allies or bosses, including Cap’n, the long lost lover of Queen Ambi from the Oracles games, as well as Captain Stalfos from Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland and LD-002G Scervo from Skyward Sword.

This fighter will be an amalgam of all three of these characters, possibly with their names applied depending on the color swaps, and their stats will be similar to your standard Stalfos. Their moveset will pull from all three versions of this character and their Stalchild pirate minions.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Ricky

RICKY

As you travel, you will find yourself needing to pick up a few animal companions who help you get around the map, the most prominent and popular of these being an excitable kangaroo with a pair of boxing gloves.

This is Ricky, an animal companion that Link can ride in as he leaps gaps and cliffs Link himself can’t get over, using his gloves to punch enemies out of his way. Much like Maple, this character’s chances were greatly improved by his appearance as a main companion to Link in Himekawa’s manga adaptation.

As a fighter, he will be fast and bouncy, with really strong jumping ability and a good amount of boxer’s strength. His moveset will pull from his abilities demonstrated in-game, his other animal companions, and his appearance in the manga.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Maple

MAPLE

After the plot is set up, you are then able to wander around the land of Holodrum. Once you have defeated thirty enemies and entered one of several specific squares on the map, a little witch will come zooming in and crash into you, spilling items everywhere.

This is Maple, a witch’s apprentice constantly racing around on errands for her teacher. She acts as a minigame of sorts, with the two of you racing each other to pick up more of the spilled items. Though her game appearance alone wasn’t quite enough to get her a spot, her role as Link’s companion in Himekawa’s manga adaptation was.

As a fighter, she will rely heavily on her magic usage, having a good amount of speed and flightiness to her. Her moveset will pull from both her game appearance and her additional abilities depicted in the manga.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Manhandla

MANHANDLA

Once you beat the third dungeon of the game, you will find a giant plant with four flame-spewing heads waiting to fight you as the game’s third boss.

Manhandla is another of the most recurring bosses throughout the series, often taking the form of a four-headed plant with various attacks, Hyrule Warriors even going so far as to flesh out its plant based abilities, and Four Swords making it so its heads can only be harmed by its respective color.

As a playable fighter, the Manhandla will lack somewhat in mobility, but it will make up for it in its reach and its ability to attack in four directions at once. Its moveset will pull from across the series, but most especially from Hyrule Warriors.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Vire/Keese

VIRE/KEESE

As one might expect, bats like to hang out in most of these underground dungeons. Called Keese, they will form only a minor threat, little flying creatures that will swoop at you, sometimes on fire. However, a few times, you might find that these bats like to combine together and form a troublesome little vampire-demon.

This is a Vire, an enemy almost exclusively seen throughout the handheld games, an enemy who won’t truly be killed unless you have also killed all the bats that make them up. One specific Vire would act as a major henchmen of Veran and Onox, the villains of the Oracles games.

As a fighter, Vire will be quick with good aerials, and will have a strong defense in the form of his ability to break apart into his individual Keese. His moveset will pull both from the demonstrated abilities of Keese and his own abilities in his few appearances.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Character Sheet: Sir Raven

SIR RAVEN

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Today, we cover a character that was a rather natural inclusion to a story all about time travel, and that is Sir Raven, Link's ancestor from Himekawa's adaptation of Oracle of Ages. In the manga, Link travels to the past in pursuit of Veran-possessing-Nayru, and encounters a young hero who had taken it upon himself to defend the people against Queen Ambi's tyrannical rule. A hero who turned out to be his ancestor.

As a wanderer, Raven could fight, but he also had an understanding for survival skills that helped him aid the fugitives that had escaped the queen's indentured servitude. On the combat side, he could use a sword, an axe, and a peashooter, with a faithful horse companion, while on the survival side, he could fish, use a hook as a lockpick, and planted mystery seeds for the villagers. I think that's more than enough.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Peashooter

While his sword will likely function as his basic attacks, we can use his peashooter here, with him firing a set of projectiles to do a bit of damage.

Side B: Fishing Rod

Similarly to Isabelle's, he will cast out his line and catch a character, pulling them in.

Up B: Steed

He will hop on his horse and use it to leap up into the air, similar to many horse users we've seen so far.

Down B: Mystery Seed

He will plant a mystery seed in the ground, and a short while later, it will burst out of the ground and launch a fighter into the air.

Final Smash: Changing Time

He will jump through a time portal, like those created in the game and manga, and a few seconds later, the target hit with the initial strike with explode into oblivion.

Entrance: He will be sitting and fishing before noticing the other fighters are there.

Taunts: Up, he will stand and look all heroic-like. Side, he will sit and fish off the side for a second. Down, he will kneel and plant a seed.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a few more off-and-on companions over regulars.

Character Sheet: Captain Stalfos

CAPTAIN STALFOS

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

Stalfos are a populous race of enemies appearing all throughout the Zelda series, generally presented as the skeletons of fallen warriors brought to life by Ganon's dark magic. They have taken several forms throughout the years, but probably one of the most notable recurring forms is the Stalfos pirate captain. This includes Cap'n from the Oracles games, LD-002G Scervo from Skyward Sword, and Captain Stalfos from the Tingle games. I think "Captain Stalfos" gets the point across best, so I'm going with that name.

I kind of overlooked them at first, as they are just an offshoot of a regular enemy, and are often simply supporting characters with a couple of boss fights thrown in, but Cap'n got a bit of focus in Himekawa's adaptation, telling the story of his romance with Queen Ambi, so I think he still works well. Frequently, the Captain Stalfos wields a cutlass and a hook, though Skyward Sword shakes this up by making his weapons electrical. He also has explosive barrels that Tingle uses to defeat him, and in the Oracle games and comics, he is trapped by sea storms, events that have played into some of our other seafarers, so I think we can work with it.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Electric Sword

Charging his sword with electricity based on Scervo from Skyward Sword, he will slash forward and stun his opponents with electricity.

Side B: Hook

He will grab with his second main weapon, hooking players and holding them to him so he can dole out successive attacks.

Up B: Sea Storm

A storm similar in design to those seen in the Oracle games will appear around him and send him spinning up into the sky.

Down B: Explosive Barrel

He will roll forward one of the explosive barrels from Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, which will explode on contact.

Final Smash: Pirate Ship

His ship will swoop in, bombarding the stage with its cannons, before crashing into it. The captain's pirate stalchildren will then flood off the boat and attack the players on stage.

Entrance: He will be sitting in his captain's chair as a corpse and then suddenly come to life.

Taunts: Up, he will ring the bell Link collects for him. Side, he will raise his sword as his pirates gather around him. Down, he will fall apart into a pile of bones.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll move on to those characters originally from the manga.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an enemy variant who has shown up quite a few times at this point.

Character Sheet: Ricky

RICKY

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

In the Oracles games, Link had a set of animal companions that he could use to get around, including Ricky the kangaroo, Moosh the flying bear, and Dimitri the Dodongo. Ricky was probably the most popular among them, carrying Link around in his pouch and using a pair of boxing gloves to fend off enemies. When Himekawa Akira's adaptation of the games came around, Ricky found his place as the "Ron" to Link's "Harry" and Maple's "Hermione."

The manga also expanded upon his in-game abilities by giving him a multi-jab attack and the ability to create a tornado with his fist. He could also tuck into his own pouch to avoid damage, ski, and he could call upon Moosh to help him out in a jam. I think that works well enough to get a moveset together.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Tornado Fist

Ricky will charge up his fist and punch forward. Depending on how long he charged, a tornado of varying size will burst from it.

Side B: Multi-Jab

Ricky will unleash a volley of quick jabs at his opponent, racking up damage.

Up B: Moosh

While he will have some pretty solid jumps, Moosh the bear will come in for this one, picking up Ricky by his nape and carrying him upwards.

Down B: Pouch

As a defensive move, Ricky will tuck inside his own pouch to avoid damage. He will also pull nearby items and projectiles in with him to use later.

Final Smash: Boxing Champion

Based more on his manga dreams of becoming a boxing champion, he will beat his fists together and then launch into a volley of attacks on his opponent, similar to Donkey Kong's or Little Mac's.

Entrance: He will hop onto the stage and do some training jabs.

Taunts: Up, he will throw his fist into the air in celebration. Side, he will hop back and forth with his fists up in a defensive position. Down, he will rest and wipe his forehead.

Thanks for reading! Next up, an enemy variant who has shown up quite a few times at this point.

Character Sheet: Maple

MAPLE

Alright, so we did have one more semi-big character list in us. Let's get into it! This is all characters I could pull out originating from the Legend of Zelda manga, or were given just enough of a boost by the manga to make it into our rankings. They are:

1. Maple

2. Jolene

3. Ricky

4. Captain Stalfos

5. Manga Link

6. Riruto

7. Manga Zelda

8. Raska

9. Tou

10. Ghanti

11. Gonza

12. Kala

13. Captain Arjuna

14. Sir Raven

15. Biri

16. Com

17. Gump

18. Shemlon

19. Rouro

20. Ganon's Minion

21. Ganon's Heart

22. Ganos

23. Haggis

We'll start off with Maple, a game character from the Oracle of Ages and the Oracle of Seasons, most memorable for accidentally crashing into Link at certain points and starting up a minigame where she and Link race to gather more of their dropped items. She served a witch as her errand girl, and was even referenced as the mentor of Irene in A Link Between Worlds. In the Oracle of Seasons manga by Himekawa Akira, she acted as a main party member to Link alongside Ricky the Kangaroo.

As a young witch, she can, of course, fly around on brooms, cast spells, and provide potions. Among her spells, courtesy of the manga, she can create cushions, lift heavy objects, summon demons, create an army of false monsters, and peer through a crystal ball at events happening far away. I think that should do us.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Cushion Spell

She will cast a spell forward, summoning a cushion and walloping her opponents with it right in their face.

Side B: Crash

Based on her actions in-game, she will speed forward on her broom and crash into the first thing she connects with. All items held by the opposing party will be dropped.

Up B: Broom

She will hop on her broom and fly away. Her broom will act as a platform that any other player will be able to use at their own risk to ride with her.

Down B: Potion

She will down a potion from her mistress and heal herself of some damage.

Final Smash: Army of Monsters

She will cast an illusion around the stage of an army of monsters surrounding her opponents. These monsters will not actually harm the opponent, but will make things confusing and obscure the player's vision while Maple herself flies around hitting people.

Entrance: She will race in and crash for a second

Taunts: Up, she will cross her arms and stick her nose in the air. Side, she will fix her hat and grin excitedly. Down, she will peer into her crystal ball.

Thanks for reading! Next up, another secondary character who didn't quite get in before.

First, all the general miscellaneous games (Hyrule Warriors, Cadence of Hyrule, so on), and then two subgroups, both of which are rather . . . infamous. Either way, Hyrule Warriors is first.

Character Sheet: Veran

VERAN

Today, we begin a new round of character sheets, all primarily appearing in the 2D titles from Oracles to Tri Force Heroes. We have quite a few, though not as many as the 3D titles. Among them are:

1. Four Links

2. Ravio

3. Princess Hilda

4. Toon Zelda

5. Din

6. Nayru

7. Ezlo

8. Minish/Picori

9. Linebeck

10. Oshus & Ciela

11. Ralph

12. Alfonzo

13. Madame Couture

14. Subrosian

15. Onox

16. Veran

17. Vaati

18. Bellum

19. Chancellor Cole & Malladus

20. Yuga

21. Lady Maud

22. Byrne

Now, for the villain of Oracle of Ages, a counterpart of Onox. This time, she is a demonic witch who can possess people's bodies, allowing her to use Link to lead her to Nayru by hiding in Impa's body, and then transporting herself into Nayru's body, taking her back in time, and manipulating Queen Ambi into building a tower that will drastically change the future of Labrynna.

First up, we have her main gimmick of being able to possess people. That may take some fancy coding, but I think it could be a solid mechanic for her. She can also summon enemies, most notably Dark Links (something that makes me wonder if Cia might have originated as a moveset for Veran). She can also throw dark energy balls, transform into fairy, turtle, and spider forms during her final battle, and travel through time, thanks to Nayru.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Possession

A core mechanic somewhat similar to Kirby's, but not, wherein she will transform herself into her ghostly form and take over the body of an opponent, allowing her to take over their controls and fight as them for a short time. I feel like that would have to be balanced somehow, like limiting the time or giving the opponent the ability to shake her off, but we'll see.

Side B: Dark Orb

She will summon a dark orb and fire it forward as a projectile, burning her opponents with dark fire.

Up B: Fairy Form

She will transform into her fairy form and fly upward before reverting to her regular self.

Down B: Dark Link

She will summon a pair of Dark Links before and behind her that will lunge forward with a slash and disappear.

Final Smash: Changing the Future

Just like Nayru and Ralph, I feel like the most potent Final Smash is for her to jump through a time portal, and then have random characters disappear and lose a stock. Possibly with the Dark Tower appearing in the background or something..

Entrance: The Oracles games' version of Impa will appear and then collapse as Veran rises from her body.

Taunts: Up, she will transform into her fairy form and float around. Down, she will transform herself into Queen Ambi for a second. Down, she will disappear into shadow and reappear.
