Gibdo

GIBDO

In some of the later dungeons, the players will also encounter mummies that creep around after Link.

These are the Gibdoes, standard enemies in most desert levels of the series. In the most recent installment, Tears of the Kingdom, they took on a more buglike appearance.

As fighters, they will be slow, with moderate power behind them, but a high level of defense. Their moveset will pull from all across their appearances in the franchise.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Character Sheet: Gibdo

GIBDO

Now, let us go through and cover all characters now added thanks to their appearance in Tears of the Kingdom, either newcomers or old characters given more to work with, and at least one that got added through association. They are:

1. Tulin

2. Mineru

3. Purah

4. Rauru

5. Sonia

6. Zonai Construct

7. Gibdo

8. ReDead

9. Gleeok

10. Phantom Ganon

Gibdos are the standard "mummy" enemy of the Zelda series. They have appeared in several games over the series, all with a generally standard appearance. In Ocarina/Majora, they were basically reskins of the ReDead enemy, while in Tears of the Kingdom, they were part bug for some reason. Either way, throughout their various appearances, they have now compiled a solid moveset.

Here is the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Scream

The Gibdo will let out the debilitating scream that they and the ReDeads of Ocarina and Majora were known for, freezing characters in their tracks.

Side B: Grapple

They will launch forward and wrap themselves around an opponent, dealing damage and not letting go.

Up B: Insect Wings

Their wings from Tears of the Kingdom will burst out of their backs, and they will be able to fly upward for a short distance.

Down B: Sandstorm

As they can in such games as Hyrule Warriors, the Gibdo will create a swirl of sand around itself, protecting them and whipping around characters standing too close.

Final Smash: Queen Gibdo

Might as well embrace the bug (after all, if Darknuts can be jackals and Wizzrobes can be toucans . . . ). The queen from Tears of the Kingdom will appear on the stage and attack.

Entrance: It will rise from the sand.

Taunts: Up, it will lean back and let out its scream. Side, it will stumble forward for a second and look around. Down, it will sink into quicksand for a second.

Kirby Hat: Its bandages.

Kart: Based on typical "Sand Temple" designs.

Special Move: It will create a swirl of sand around itself to protect from harm.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Gerudo Valley.

Victory Screen: More and more of it will rise from the sand and march upon the defeated players.

Losing Screen: It will slump to the ground and return to the sand.

Color Swaps: The original game, Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina/Majora, Twilight Princess, Four Swords, Minish Cap, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Thanks for reading! Next up, ReDead lurks in the shadows.

Ghanti

GHANTI

A few years into Himekawa’s run as go-to mangaka, he would decide to go back and write an adaptation of A Link to the Past, because why not? Rather than Raska and Captain Arjuna, like his contemporary, Himekawa would instead give Link a companion in the form of a feisty female bandit he comes across on the road.

This is Ghanti, a descendant of Hylian knights whose parents were killed as a child and she was raised by the bandit who killed them, filling her head with stories that the knights were the ones responsible. This initially proves a source of contention between her and Link at first, but she soon proves a brave and loyal companion.

As a fighter, she will use many underhanded methods to deal damage, tricks she picked up as a bandit, making use of her bandit’s dagger and sword, her wolf form she takes on when entering the Dark World, and the silver arrows she inherited from her parents.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Tou

TOU

Most of the opening of the game would play out the same in the manga, with Link’s uncle being killed and Link having to go on the run. He will seek refuge with Raska and his father.

Raska’s father is named Tou, a master martial artist who trained Raska in all that he knows. His influence will push Raska to join Link and Captain Arjuna on their journey, and he will continue to play a significant supporting role throughout the plot.

As a fighter, he will be an echo of his son, his moveset building on the same movepool his son pulls from. He will be a bit more direct and focused though, having much more mastery of the moves than Raska would.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Captain Arjuna

CAPTAIN ARJUNA

While Link and Raska play and train, Link’s uncle watches on as he is approached by Hyrule’s captain of the guard, who requests his help with a serious situation that has arisen at the castle involving the Princess Zelda and the advisor Agahnim.

This man is Captain Arjuna, who would stand at Link’s uncle’s side in their fight against Agahnim, and would later become a constant companion to Link and Raska as they fight against Agahnim and later enter the Dark World, acting as a sort of Kakashi-esque mentor to the boys.

As a fighter, Captain Arjuna will largely be an echo of the Hylian soldier moveset, as he was once their leader, and he doesn’t show too much of his own unique abilities, mostly just being a warrior and a swordsman just like all the Hylian soldiers.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Raska

RASKA

Although we’d only see the one animated version of the series, the comics and manga for the Zelda series would continue, still running strong to this very day. Ran Maru would not return past the first two games, but Ataru Cagiva would take up the mantle with his own adaptation of A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening. In it, Link would have a childhood friend and sparring buddy trained in the martial arts.

This is Raska, the son of a local martial artist and Link’s neighbor. When Link sets out on his quest and is hunted by the kingdom’s soldiers under Agahnim’s orders, Raska and his father protect Link, his father pushing him to join Link as a companion on his journey.

As a fighter, Raska will be fast and nimble due to his martial arts training. His moveset will pull from all of the martial arts demonstrated by himself and his father, even roping in his father for a few attacks here and there.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Kakariko Village

KAKARIKO VILLAGE

Another major recurring location throughout the Zelda series is the civilian village of Kakariko, generally situated somewhere separate from but near Hyrule Castle. It is said to be the ancestral home of the Sheikah, Impa hailing from there in most of her appearances.

As a stage, this will pull from most renditions of the village. One notable feature I would like included is the large windmill present in Ocarina of Time, with platforms attached to act as terrain.

2D Zelda Classic Mode

2D ZELDA CLASSIC MODE

Just like with the Mario series, my image for how a classic mode would play out is that you would have a set recreating every major game in the franchise, using battles with certain fighters and stages to recreate the look and feel of various scenes and stages. Here's one for A Link to the Past:

1.       Vs. Agahnim, on Hyrule Castle

2.       Vs. Hylian Soldier horde, on Dungeon

3.       Vs. Sahasrahla on Eastern Palace

4.       Possible Moldorm boss fight on Gerudo Valley

5.       Vs. Agahnim on Ganon’s Tower

6.       Vs. Giant Dodongo on The Dark World

7.       Vs. maybe a giant Tentacruel on Water Temple

8.       Vs. Stalfos horde on Great Deku Tree

9.       Vs. Zelda with a dark aura around her on Kakariko Village

10.   Vs. maybe Yeta on Snowpeak Ruins

11.   Vs. Wizzrobe horde on a swamp stage, maybe Soda Jungle

12.   Maybe a Gleeok boss fight on Great Bay

13.   Vs. Ganon on Ganon’s Tower

2D Zelda Stage Roster

2D ZELDA ROSTER

And here's the stage roster for anything representing the 2D Zelda games. If this were a real roster from a real game, which one would you pick to play on first?

The Dark World

THE DARK WORLD

While the Ganon’s Tower stage will pull heavily from its appearance in A Link to the Past, it will be far more representative of Ganon himself rather than its home game. So, to properly represent A Link to the Past, I feel we will need to lean heavily on the game’s gimmick of switching between Hyrule and the mysterious dark world.

The stage will be set on Zelda’s Castle in the middle of the world map, much of the map visible in the background, but will at regular intervals switch to the dark world, at which point players will find themselves battling on top of the giant pyramid that takes the castle’s place.

Ganon's Tower

GANON'S TOWER

Ganon has been fought by Link and Zelda a hundred different times in a hundred different locations, mostly based upon the plot of the game itself and where a battle with him made sense to take place. However, A Link to the Past gave us our most recurring locale for his final battles.

This stage will be set atop Ganon’s Tower, with a huge flat platform perfect for boss battles. In story modes, this would be the key stage for any given Ganon boss fight. It will probably pull heaviest from the Link to the Past version of the stage.

Eastern Palace

EASTERN PALACE

A stage I initially overlooked when covering A Link to the Past, but soon proved time and time again to be a major location in A Link Between Worlds and in the multiple manga based on A Link to the Past, I ultimately had to come back and include the Eastern Palace among the stages.

This stage will pull heavily from all renditions of the Eastern Palace, its core design concept in A Link to the Past, some of the heavy 2D/3D switching involved in a Link Between Worlds, and might feature some of the secondary characters from the manga, like Kanika.

2D Zelda Roster

2D ZELDA ROSTER

And here we have it, the full roster for all Legend of Zelda first appearing in a 2D top-down game. As asked before with previous rosters, if this were a real roster from a real game, who ya mainin'?

Monkey

MONKEY

In the place of the Eastern Palace of Hyrule, Link will instead encounter the Palace of Darkness. If he wants to get in and complete the dungeon inside, he will have to seek out a mischievous little monkey named Kiki, hanging out somewhere nearby, who will open the palace door for him, for a price.

This will not be the only time Link will encounter, and subsequently have to work with, a monkey hanging around the Zelda universe. In Majora’s Mask, he will have to rescue one held captive by the Deku Scrubs, and in Twilight Princess, he will have to work with a whole host of them to traverse the Faron Woods region, helping them take down their corrupted chief.

As fighters, the Monkeys will be fast on their feet and agile enough to get to places others can’t, though that will come at the cost of their strength. Their movesets will pull from across their appearances and the various ways they help Link, as well as the Monkey Chief’s boss battle in Twilight Princess.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Hinox

HINOX

As Link journeys across Hyrule to stop Agahnim and free his people, he will discover the existence of a Dark World, a dimension nearly identical to his own, but darker and more twisted. Here he will find different versions of familiar landmarks, and characters and enemies bearing passing resemblances to characters on the other side. Among these stronger enemies, he will encounter large cyclopean beings throwing bombs.

These are the Hinoxes, who would go on to regular appearances across the 2D games, almost never appearing in the 3D series. That would be until Breath of the Wild. Much like their fellow enemies, the Lynels, they’d get an upgrade in that game, transforming them into giants that liked to tear apart the landscape around them to get at whoever disturbed their slumber.

As fighters, they’ll probably be somewhere in between their normal 2D portrayals and their Breath of the Wild versions, not quite as big as the Wild ones, but still bearing a strong resemblance to them. They will be heavy and strong, and their moves will pull from the bombs of their 2D versions and the other attacks of their Wild versions.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Sahasrahla

SAHASRAHLA

Forced into hiding from Agahnim and the soldiers he now commands, Link and Zelda set about trying to stop him. Zelda sends Link out to seek aid from an old wise man living in the nearby village, who has likewise been forced from his home and is now hiding near the Eastern Palace.

This old man is Sahasrahla, something of a spiritual successor to the old man of the previous games and an advisor to Link. Much like his predecessor, he provides Link with many of the unique items used in the game and aids him with magic from time to time. Another version of him would later appear in A Link Between Worlds.

As a fighter, Sahasrahla will be older and slower than most, and will rely mostly on magical attacks to fight. Being the supplier of much of the weapons and Link’s primary advisor throughout the adventure, it seems only right that his moveset pull from all the mechanics unique to this specific game.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Hylian Soldier

HYLIAN SOLDIER

Link will set out from his little hut that he shares with his uncle to help Zelda and overthrow Agahnim. His journey will be troubled, however, as he will find not only standard Ganon followers blocking his way, but the regular soldiers who would have normally been his allies have now turned on him as well.

Hylian Soldiers would appear time and time again throughout the Legend of Zelda, mostly acting as mere NPCs, kicking him out when caught sneaking into the castle in Ocarina of Time or fighting alongside him in Hyrule Warriors. Thanks to their appearance here, however, they would soon prove common enemy types in most of the 2D games, whether it makes sense in the narrative or not.

As fighters, the Hylian soldiers will be pretty much in the generic category, most of their stats about middling, if with a little bit of extra strength and speed. Their movesets will pull primarily from their enemy roles in the 2D games but with a little added from their 3D appearances.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Agahnim

AGAHNIM

Although reception to Zelda II would be . . . complicated, at best, the Legend of Zelda series continued to prove huge and popular enough to see an installment the moment Nintendo launched its next console, the NES. This one starred a new Link, woken by Zelda from his dreams to warn him that the king’s advisor had deposed him and brainwashed the kingdom’s soldiers.

This advisor was Agahnim, a dark wizard who had ingratiated himself into the royal family of Hyrule as a means to betray them and resurrect his lord Ganon, who’d been sealed away centuries before. He would mostly only appear in this game, but similar characters would recur in later games.

As a fighter, he will be a spellcaster first and foremost, with lots of powerful magical attacks at his disposal, most with an underhanded bent to them. His moveset will pull from his two major boss fights as well as his implied actions throughout the rest of the story.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Ganon

GANON

Having fought your way across eight dungeons and the entire overworld, you are finally ready to storm the fortress of the game’s evil warlock, set high on Death Mountain. You finally reach the inner chamber and come face to face with a massive pig demon wielding a trident.

This is Ganon, the original representation of the series’s recurring antagonist. Though later games will expand his backstory and represent him originally as a human, by this point in his development, he has become so consumed by evil and dark magic, he has lost his human form entirely. Though his beastly form would make appearances in the 3D games, the pig demon presented here would be his consistent form for most 2D appearances.

As a fighter, naturally he will be big and strong with a lot of power behind his attacks. His trident will act as his main weapon but his moveset will pull from all of his various boss fights across the Zelda series.

Likelihood rating: Strong.

Wizzrobe

WIZZROBE

Right around your sixth dungeon, should you do them in order, you will come across another enemy who will appear again and again throughout the series, the resident spellcasters of Ganon’s forces.

These are the Wizzrobes, cloaked mages who wield all manner of magic across multiple different elements. They will appear consistently throughout most games in the series, either as basic enemies or as mini-bosses, always using magic and teleportation to screw with you.

As a fighter, naturally they will be mage-types, thoroughly unskilled in physical areas but making up for it with their skill in magic and spells. Their movesets will pull from across their appearances, primarily their spells and teleportation.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.
