Other Zelda Comics

OTHER ZELDA COMICS

Today, I'll be covering two remaining comics that didn't have that much to them, so I might as well just combine them. First is an Ocarina of Time comic published by Nintendo Power in 1998, a four chapter comic acting as a prequel to the game and detailing how Link became an orphan raised by Kokiri. His parents are the main stars, but all action shown is either mostly off screen (see: his father's death) or just fleeing through the forest while holding a baby (see: his mother's death), neither of which are that conducive to Smash movesets. The second is a little five-page Skyward Sword comic published by Penny Arcade and written by Mike Kahulik. There's not much to it that's not in the original game.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Link: kick, sword, sword beam, pillow, magic pouch, swing, shield, lasso, springboard, wind whistle, power bracelet, force field ring, surf on shield

Zelda: punch, reflect with a pan, grow with magic, launch from a tree, bow, boomerang, crossbow, raise on Triforce, ice, fire, shields, lemons, banana peels

Sprite

King Harkinian: water park, CDi games rep?

Impa

Ganon: teleport, lightning, summon enemies, bombs, fire, chains, crystal ball, suction, control jewel, capture staff, wand of power

Goriya: Possible catch-all for enemy representation here, as it is the most prominent enemy type in the show that has not yet gotten a moveset. If so, staff, bone bow, capture staff, bomb, frog transformation, boomerang, giant magnet.

Prince Façade: horse, shield, crossbow

Sing: Pegasus, leap, sai, sai beam

Sleezenose: fake sword, lockpick, beehives, bee catapult, box of bees

Doof/Automaton: automaton, animate, bear hug, broom, fake Moblin

Witch of Walls

Water Monster: splash, flood, snake, crab, fish, tentacle, lightning

Captain Krin

Bagu: pick up

Queen Seline: magic, frog transformation, jar that steals magic, horse, wand as weapon, defense, tennis

Roam: sword, crossbow, eagle form, silver arrow, angel, fire corn, Epheremelda

Stages:

Zelda's Castle

Ganon's Lair

Water Park

Calatia

Thanks for reading! Now, I think we'll cut it here and do a character run before moving on to the manga, because let me tell you, we are in for a treat. The manga are so much fun.

A Link to the Past (Ishinomori)

A LINK TO THE PAST

Today, we'll be covering an adaptation of A Link to the Past printed in Nintendo Power comics and written by mangaka Ishinomori Shotaro. The comic covers much of the general plot of the game, though it leaves a lot out for the sake of the story. The biggest addition to the plot is the character Roam, a noble (-ish) knight destined to wield the silver arrows when fighting Ganon, but, due to his impure heart, starts to transform into an eagle when in the Dark World. (This must have been a popular concept, because Himekawa's manga adaptation would have a similar, but more well-done, character). Roam wielded a sword and crossbow, could transform into an eagle, returned briefly as an angel after his death, and, of course, wielded the silver arrows. I think we can possibly factor in the explosive firecorn items and the fairy Epheremelda, both appearing in this comic.

Anyway, here's what we've got so far:

Link: kick, sword, sword beam, pillow, magic pouch, swing, shield, lasso, springboard, wind whistle, power bracelet, force field ring, surf on shield

Zelda: punch, reflect with a pan, grow with magic, launch from a tree, bow, boomerang, crossbow, raise on Triforce, ice, fire, shields, lemons, banana peels

Sprite

King Harkinian: water park, CDi games rep?

The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

Today, let's cover the run of Zelda comics run by Valiant. This run was published between 1990 and 1991 with six issues and twelve stories total. It . . . seems to be set in the same universe as the cartoon, albeit Link has a slightly different design and he and Zelda are a hair nicer to each other. It even had what I thought was a really great story arc where Link gained the Triforce of Power and ended up being corrupted by it.

Link, Zelda, Ganon, Impa, and King Harkinian all appear here, with not too much new to talk about, alongside a lot of recurring enemies from the series, as well as a few from Zelda II, like Dairas and Dark Link. A few new characters include Captain Krin, the captain of the guard, who doesn't seem to do too much on screen; Bagu, Link's friend who is implied to be a strong fighter, but sadly, the only thing we see him do on screen is lift people up; and Queen Seline, the queen of a nearby kingdom and powerful magic user. She is shown to be able to cast powerful eight-way spells that turn people into frogs and defend her kingdom from attack, and even without her magic, can ride a horse, fight using her magic wand as a weapon, and play tennis.

Here's what we've got so far:

Link: kick, sword, sword beam, pillow, magic pouch, swing, shield, lasso, springboard, wind whistle, power bracelet, force field ring, surf on shield

Zelda: punch, reflect with a pan, grow with magic, launch from a tree, bow, boomerang, crossbow, raise on Triforce, ice, fire, shields, lemons, banana peels

The Legend of Zelda (TV Series)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

You know how, even as poorly made and written as they were, all of the Mario film media hit that right note of bad that I had a good time watching them anyway? Yeah, this show was not like that. I hated it. Link and Zelda are both just awful people in their own special ways, and they deserve each other. But that's not what we're here for. This show ran as part of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, with the regular Mario episodes airing on the weekdays, and Zelda airing on Saturday. It was mostly based on the original game, with Link, Zelda, and Ganon constantly tussling over ownership of the Triforces of Wisdom and Power, with Link basically being a hired mercenary Zelda and her father brought in to protect the Triforce of Wisdom.

Link, our "hero" with a sexual harassment case coming his way any day now, can kick, use his sword and cast beams from it, throw pillows, pull from and store items in a magic pouch, swing on a rope, use a shield, swing a lasso, springboard off of things, use a whistle to summon winds, use a power bracelet and a force field ring, and surf on his shield.

Zelda, our princess who finds reasons to blame Link for things that could have never possibly been his fault in a hundred years, can likewise punch, reflect things with a pan, use magic to grow things, launch herself from a tree, use a bow, boomerang, and crossbow, raise herself up on top of the Triforce, create ice, fire, and shields with magic, and throw lemons and banana peels.

Other secondary characters include Sprite, Link's constant fairy companion who has a bit of the Tinker Bell jealousy syndrome for him, and King Harkinian, Zelda's father with the same name as the character in the CDi games. He doesn't do much here except build himself a water park, but I may go back and revisit some of the stuff from those games. He just might be the ideal candidate there.

Ganon is our main villain, here portrayed as a piglike wizard who lives in the Underworld and holds the Triforce of Power, constantly coming up with schemes to steal the Triforce of Wisdom. He is constantly teleporting, can throw lightning, summons enemies from a large jar in his lair, throws bombs, summons fire, chains up his enemies, peers into a crystal ball, uses suction, and has such magical items as the control jewel, the capture staff, and the wand of power.

Several enemies from the original game appear here, including Moblins (with staffs, bone bows, and capture staffs), Stalfos wielding bombs, Hardhat Beetles, Gohmas, Octoroks, Tektites, Zoras, Gleeoks, Gibdoes (who can turn Link into a frog apparently), Vires, Lynels, Goriyas (who come with boomerangs and giant magnets), Aquamentus, and Dodongos.

Just like the Mario series, the Zelda series came with a few one-off characters who played important parts in the story of their episode. First, we have Prince Façade, a charming figure who tries to woo Zelda but turns out to be slimy and two faced. He generally just rode a horse and uses a shield and crossbow. Then we have Sing, a ninja warrior from a "distant land" hear to steal back her Pegasus that Ganon had stolen. Besides her Pegasus, she can leap really high and wields sai that can shoot beams. Up, next is Sleezenose, a pickpocket and con artist who carries a fake sword, can pick locks, drops beehives to load into a catapult, and fills boxes with bees. Doof was the castle's handyman and aspiring magician, who created an automaton that he brought to life, which could crush things in a bear hug and hop around on a broom. He also created a fake Moblin at one point. Then we have the Witch of Walls, who is . . . just kind of a wall with a face. And finally, we have the Water Monster, water from an enchanted fairy spring brought to life by Sprite's people when King Harkinian's water park unwittingly drained all the water from their spring. This monster could splash, flood areas, turn into a snake, crab, and fish shape, grab with a tentacle, and shoot lightning.

As for the stages, the series was fairly limited, most events taking place either at Zelda's Castle and the overworld surrounding it, and in Ganon's Lair and the underworld surrounding it. King Harkinian's water park is one of the few notable examples of any other prominent locations.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Link: kick, sword, sword beam, pillow, magic pouch, swing, shield, lasso, springboard, wind whistle, power bracelet, force field ring, surf on shield

Zelda: punch, reflect with a pan, grow with magic, launch from a tree, bow, boomerang, crossbow, raise on Triforce, ice, fire, shields, lemons, banana peels

Sprite

King Harkinian: water park, CDi games rep?

Ganon: teleport, lightning, summon enemies, bombs, fire, chains, crystal ball, suction, control jewel, capture staff, wand of power

Goriya: Possible catch-all for enemy representation here, as it is the most prominent enemy type in the show that has not yet gotten a moveset. If so, staff, bone bow, capture staff, bomb, frog transformation, boomerang, giant magnet.

Prince Façade: horse, shield, crossbow

Sing: Pegasus, leap, sai, sai beam

Sleezenose: fake sword, lockpick, beehives, bee catapult, box of bees

Doof/Automaton: automaton, animate, bear hug, broom, fake Moblin

Witch of Walls

Water Monster: splash, flood, snake, crab, fish, tentacle, lightning

Stages:

Zelda's Castle

Ganon's Lair

Water Park

Thanks for reading! Since it's really only the one show (Link and Zelda do make appearances in Captain N, but I'll go into that more later), let's cover some of the American comics that have come out, starting with the Valiant comics.

Zelda Guest Appearances

ZELDA GUEST APPEARANCES

Today, let's go over all the major guest appearances of Legend of Zelda characters in other properties. We'll start with the most obvious: Super Smash Bros. Naturally, Legend of Zelda has had a major presence in the series from the beginning, starting with Link in the first game, with a recreation of Zelda's castle from Ocarina as a stage. From there, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Young Link were added in Melee, Zelda coming with a gimmick of transforming into Sheik, alongside Great Bay from Majora's Mask and a generic ruins-style stage called Temple. In Brawl, all returned except for Young Link, who was replaced by Toon Link. Tetra's ship from Wind Waker and the Bridge of Eldin from Twilight Princess appeared as the stages. The same returned again in 4, with no new additions, and Gerudo Valley from Ocarina, a train from Spirit Tracks, and Skyloft from Skyward Sword all became new stages. Finally, Ultimate brought back Young Link, and added in the Great Plateau Tower from Breath of the Wild. Also Tingle, Midna, Ghirahim, Skull Kid, and the moon from Majora's Mask all acted as assist trophies at different points.

Another prominent guest appearance came from Namco-Bandai's Soul Calibur II, where Link appeared as a version exclusive guest fighter, with Heihachi Mishima taking his place in the PS2 version, and Spawn taking his place in the Xbox version. Link's moveset there was mostly built on various sword attacks, but it did incorporate his bombs, bow and arrows, and boomerangs as well. In general, basically built on stuff we've already covered.

Across Nintendo, Link has appeared as a guest in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, riding a motorcycle based on Epona, and with a racetrack built around Hyrule, featuring Deku Babas in place of Piranha Plants, Keese in place of Swoops, and Rupees in place of coins. Several of 9-Volt's minigames have also featured the Legend of Zelda in the Wario Ware series, a minigame based on Legend of Zelda appeared in Nintendo Land, and the character Crazy Tracy from Link's Awakening played a part in Captain Rainbow. Finally, the Wii U version of the game Scribblenauts Unlimited featured several cameos from Legend of Zelda characters.

And I think that's about it! Here's what we've got:

I guess quite a bit, but nothing truly new brought to the table.

Thanks for reading! I guess there's not much need for any character updates, so I guess we can move on to . . . the television cartoon. If you'll excuuuuuuuuse me, I'd better go get that started.

Hyrule Warriors Ports

HYRULE WARRIORS PORTS

Today, let's finish off with the Hyrule Warriors ports. The original game was released for the Wii U, but a 3DS port, Hyrule Warriors Legends, was released not long after, bringing with it the already added DLC characters Twili Midna, Young Link, and Tingle, plus the new characters of Linkle, Skull Kid, Toon Link, Tetra, and King Daphnes, who would shortly be added back to the original as DLC. It also came with two new story modes, one focusing on Linkle's adventures and another focusing on Tetra.

Later, when the Switch came out, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition was released, this time will all previous DLC characters built into the base game, with Breath of the Wild skins for both Link and Zelda. Other than that, there's not a whole lot else to report on, so I think we'll be moving on.

What do we have?

Nada

HD Remakes

HD REMAKES

Today, we will be covering the remainder of the HD remakes for all of the major 3D games. Ocarina of Time 3D technically counted as part of this group too, but we also have Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD for the Wii U, Majora's Mask 3D for the 3DS, and Skyward Sword HD for the Nintendo Switch. There's not much to say about any of them really. They've all gotten massive graphical updates, had some technical elements switched around, quality of life improved. Skyward Sword specifically fixed up a lot of the gameplay problems that came from the heavy reliance on motion capture. And most of them could make use of amiibo, so there's that too.

What do we have so far?

Still nothing.

Thanks for reading! Next up, the two Hyrule Warriors ports. See you then!

Four Swords-related Remakes

FOUR SWORDS-RELATED REMAKES

Today, let's cover a pair of remakes, both at least somewhat connected to Four Swords. The first is technically the same game as Four Swords, which was Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords, a Game Boy Advance remake of A Link to the Past which just so happened to come with a bonus multiplayer game titled Four Swords. Aside from the obvious new mode, the game is mostly completely brought over, except with a few changes to the map and dialogue, a new bonus dungeon called the Palace of the Four Sword, and with Maple from the Oracle games appearing.

Several years later, Four Swords was re-released on its own as a DSiWare game for the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary. The game added in a new single-player mode so that you didn't have to play with friends, and had a few workarounds so that it would work without Link to the Past being attached.

And that's about it. Here's what we've got so far:

Still nothing

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover a few HD remakes.

Ocarina of Time Remakes

 OCARINA OF TIME REMAKES

Next up, let's cover the remakes and re-releases of everyone's favorite game in the franchise, Ocarina of Time. This came in two forms. The first was Ocarina of Time: Master Quest, a re-release for the Game Cube that was mostly the same, content-wise, but with re-worked dungeons that cranked up the difficulty by a lot. This game was released as a two-pack with the original version of the game on a second disc.

Then came Ocarina of Time 3D, a remaster released on the 3DS that came with both the original game and Master Quest. Although this can technically fall into the camp of the HD Remakes that I'll be covering later, since there were two Ocarinas, I figured I could cover that here. It mostly had a lot of graphical improvements and quality-of-life changes (like the Iron Boots being an equipable item, a true life saver), but nothing new added for our purposes.

Anyway, here's what we've got so far:

Still not much.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a couple of Four Swords-related items.

Link's Awakening Remakes

LINK'S AWAKENING REMAKES

Today, let's begin with our coverage of the Legend of Zelda remakes, re-releases, and ports. There are quite a few, but I've broken them up into five specific groups as they made sense to me. First off, let's cover those re-releases for Link's Awakening, which has received two notable remakes. The first is Link's Awakening DX, an updated re-release for the Game Boy Color with enhanced graphics, a camera function, and a bonus dungeon. Other than that, it's pretty much the same.

Next is the game's remake released for the Switch in 2019, pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the original, but built from the ground up with full 3D graphics and a toy-like chibi style. Some have suggested the possibility of a Toy Link character back during the Smash Ultimate speculation days, but I really never saw the need for it, so we're not. Outside of the new style, some of the biggest changes was some soundtrack rearranging, full eight-directional sword controls, and no screen transitions, plus a make-your-own dungeon bonus feature, which some expect to be testing the waters on a possible Zelda Maker (which I'd be down for).

Anyway, now that we have that done, here's what we've got:

Not much

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover the Ocarina of Time remakes.

Tingle Series Roster

SUPER SMASH BROS. UNIVERSE

TINGLE SERIES

And now, although it will be a small roster, I don't feel comfortable just lumping this group in with the regular Zelda rosters, so, I guess it's our Yoshi roster: the Tingle roster.

1. Tingle

2. Pinkle

3. Tingle's Troupe

4. Aba

5. Yamori

6. Uncle Rupee

7. Majiyo

8. Segare

9. Oinker

And, I'd say, just remove Tingle from the 3D Zelda roster and there you go. We now have four rosters to work with.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we cover the remakes, re-releases, and ports of the Zelda series.

Character Sheet: Oinker

OINKER

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

And last but not least, we have the Oinkers, basically the main mooks of Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, who probably exist because Tingle would never stand a chance against actual Moblins (Hyrule Warriors not withstanding). The Oinkers pose a constant threat to Tingle throughout his quest, the penultimate dungeon even acting as their lair.

Across the game, we see them using bombs, swords, shields, and lances, casting spells, rolling around on large balls, performing spinning attacks with their swords, circling up and raging, calling in even more Oinkers, calling down meteors, floating, and summoning waves of magic. I'd say that's certainly enough for our purposes.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Bomb

The Oinker will pull out a bomb and toss it forward. It will do moderate damage upon explosion.

Side B: Jousting Lance

It will pull out a lance and charge forward, not doing as much damage as, say, a Moblin might with a similar attack.

Up B: Bouncy Ball

A large ball will pop up beneath the Oinker. A second tap will allow the pig to bounce off of the ball into the air, but simply navigating forward will let it roll across the stage.

Down B: Spellcaster

The Oinker will pull out a magic wand and cast a spell as a projectile that will stun the enemy.

Final Smash: Oinker Fortress

It will call in a horde of Oinkers as fortress walls appear around the stage. Those Oinkers on the stage will rage and attack everything in sight, while still more will throw projectiles from the walls.

Entrance: A fortress gate will open and the Oinker will march out.

Taunts: Up, the Oinker will raise its spear and tap it on the ground. Side, the Oinker will pace back and forth as if on duty. Down, the Oinker will gather up a bunch of Rupees and stash them in a bag.

Thanks for reading! And now . . . should I do it? It would be a pretty small roster . . . you know what, I'm gonna do it!

Character Sheet: Segare

SEGARE

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

Next up, we have an original character to the Wizard of Oz setup in the form of Segare. Originally presenting as a handsome prince vying to win the hand of the princess before we do, he acts as a recurring boss throughout the game, actively sabotaging us on our path here and there. In the end, he is revealed to be Majiyo's son, who was antagonizing us to help us believe we were a serious threat against his chances.

Across the game, he is shown to wield a sword and ride a goat, and can also leap really high. He pulls off multiple forms of sabotage and vandalism, such as felling a tree in our path, knocking out a bridge, and disguising himself as a juggler. In his final battle against us, he pilots a giant mech that uses rocket launchers as projectiles and launches itself off of ramp, trying to force you back toward a spiked wall.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Sabotage

He will burst forward with a strong slash from his sword, striking right through a tree and causing it to fall forward.

Side B: Ramp Leap

His goat will appear and he will charge forward, launching off the end of a ramp and coming down hard a few feet away.

Up B: Princely Jump

He will leap really high in the air, then come back down with a pose.

Down B: Spiked Wall

He will thrust an opponent hard, knocking them back into a spiked wall that will appear behind them and do even more damage.

Final Smash: Segare Mech

He will land on the stage in his Mech, hopping around on its feet and stomping fighters while also launching several missiles.

Entrance: He will jump out of a bush as if to surprise someone.

Taunts: Up, he will brush his hair back arrogantly. Side, he will hold out a picture of the princess and look at it lovingly. Down, he will get down on one knee and bow to his opponent.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we will finish off with Tingle's Moblins!

Monday, October 17, 2022

Character Sheet: Majiyo

MAJIYO

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

Now, let's cover the main villain of Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. The game starts with Tingle receiving a book from a strange merchant, which soon sucks him in and forces him to re-enact the book's story, a cheap knockoff of Wizard of Oz. This merchant is revealed to be Majiyo, the game's villain and stand-in for the Wicked Witch of the West. She wishes to gain more power by absorbing "feropon," an element released by someone with delusions of a person out of their league falling in love with them, and she had picked Tingle as the perfect candidate. I . . . have nothing to say about that plot point, except maybe a Nelson Muntz "Ha Ha!"

In her boss battle, she could float around with a ring of orbs around her. From those orbs, she could summon bees that fly forward as projectiles, worms that charge forward, and a giant snake form with frogs popping up from her back and leaping at Tingle to try and drain him. She can also shapeshift into disguises, teleport with magic, and become a giant outside of battle. Her final form takes the shape of a giant head with six hands floating around it.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Majiyo Wasp

She will summon a wasp to fly forward as a strong projectile.

Side B: Majiyo Worm

She will summon her giant worm to charge full-body across the stage, knocking aside any in its way.

Up B: Orb Float

Her ring of orbs will surround her and she will start floating upwards, with the player able to control her trajectory. I prefer that to a basic teleport anyway..

Down B: Feropon Frog

She will summon up one of the frogs from her snake move, which will hop forward and latch onto the nearest player, draining them of health AKA Feropon.

Final Smash: Final Form

She will turn into her giant head form, with her six hands swarming around her, swiping at players and producing cards from which Majiyos emerge and attack.

Entrance: She will teleport in wearing her merchant disguise and throw it off.

Taunts: She will hold up a card with the princess trapped inside. Side, she will flip through the book and look interested. Down, she will suck up some feropon and look refreshed.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we have Majiyo's son Segare!

Character Sheet: Uncle Rupee

UNCLE RUPEE

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

When you begin Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, the plot kicks off with a strange old man contacting Tingle and telling him of a magical land called Rupeeland that he can access by dumping as many rupees as possible into a pool. As you near the end of the story, you discover that this was all a ruse, that there is no Rupeeland, and that Uncle Rupee is a fraud who has been using you to get rich.

In his boss battle, he flies around on a large sofa that he bought for himself with your money. He can shoot lightning, use some fancy tables as shields, send out his cats to attack you, send his bodyguards to shoot at you with Rupee guns, and can take on two additional forms, one as a giant and one as a giant head. I'd say that's plenty.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Precious

He will toss one of his cats forward as a projectile, which will attach itself to you and rack up damage with claw attacks.

Side B: Bodyguards

Two bodyguards will appear on either side of him and shoot two streams of rupees at opposing players.

Up B: Sofa Rockets

His sofa will produce rockets that will shoot him straight up into the air and out of trouble.

Down B: Table Shield

He will bring forward a fancy table to protect himself from your attack.

Final Smash: Giant Head

He will turn into his giant head form and spew rupees at the screen, similar to something like Andross.

Entrance: He will start as as a homeless man in rags then a sofa will appear under him and his rags will turn to robes.

Taunts: He will spread his hands as "Rupeeland!" appears above his head. Side, he will hold up a bunch of rupees and laugh jovially. Down, his sofa will break and his rags will return.

Character Sheet: Yamori

YAMORI

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

Today let's cover Yamori, a supporting character appearing in both Rosy Rupeeland and Balloon Trip of Love. He functions as a sort of minigame in both, hiding out in random locations until Tingle finds him, rewarding him and then escaping. He can also be recruited as a bodyguard in the first game. He doesn't have too much to work with, but more than enough. He attacks with a ninja blade, hides and uses disguises to conceal his location, leaps high into the air, flies using a kite, and drops smoke bombs.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Blade Flurry

He will leap into a slight fight cloud, but less distinct than some of the others, slashing multiple times with his blade.

Side B: Smoke Bomb

He will drop a smoke bomb right in front of himself, creating a cloud on the stage and obscuring the fight around the area.

Up B: Kite Leap

He will leap high into the air then produce his kite to swoop downwards.

Down B: Hide

He will pull up a disguise patterned to look like the stage he is on, blending in with his surroundings. He can break from it with any attack, or he can stay there indefinitely until struck by an opponent.

Final Smash: Hidden Slash

He will slash an opponent and send them into the air. He will then perform several strikes similar to other ninja characters like Sheik and Greninja.

Entrance: He will poke his head up out of a patch of grass with a snorkel in his mouth.

Taunts: Up, he will perform a standard ninja pose. Side, he will look around as if suddenly exposed. Down, he will tuck down behind grass and poke his head out.

Thanks for reading! Next up, the main villain of the first Tingle game!

Character Sheet: Aba

ABA

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

Today, let's cover Aba. She appears early on in Rosy Rupeeland as a wild child who instructs you on the game's combat system. She recurs throughout the game, turning out to be the adopted daughter of the wild man Junglo until you piece together the clues and discover that her real father is the local blacksmith that provides your weapons.

Being the person that teaches you how to fight, she is a natural pick for the game's gimmick rep, specifically every action unique to the game. This includes your standard fight cloud fighting system, fireworks, money management, stretching out and leaping, digging for rupees, cooking, and the rupee blast used against Uncle Rupee. And of course, we cannot forget the game's bodyguard mechanic.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Fight Cloud

Aba will leap forward with her staff and pull enemies into a fight cloud, dealing damage before breaking apart with a slight launching move.

Side B: Rupee Dig

Aba will pull out a shovel and dig up a rupee, which will strike the opponent before letting Aba pick it up. Every rupee she picks up will give her a small boost to her stats. This could result in her being really powerful eventually.

Up B: Stretching Leap

She will stretch upward and then leap, throwing herself high into the air and over her opponents.

Down B: Junglo

This will pull from the bodyguard mechanic, but more specific to her. She will hold up a rupee and her adopted father Junglo will appear, following her around and fighting with her. Enough hits will eventually defeat him.

Final Smash: Rupee Blaster

Just like Pinkle, she will end up at one corner of the screen and start blasting rupees at the stage.

Entrance: She will jump onto the stage, looking serious.

Taunts: Up, she will count up her current rupee count, showing above her head. Side, she will sweep her staff and take up a fighting pose. Down, she will fiddle with her locket and look sad.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a ninja might be lurking somewhere in the next blog.

Character Sheet: Tingle's Troupe

TINGLE'S TROUPE

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

Next up, let's cover Kakashi, Buriki, and Lion, Tingle's companions from Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. Balloon Trip of Love is basically just Wizard of Oz but with Tingle, and the three companions are the game's adaptation of the scarecrow, tin man, and cowardly lion, with such differences as Buriki is a female alien robot. Separately, they didn't have quite enough to work with, but as a three-person group, I think we've got it made.

Together, they can crawl and pick up random items. Kakashi can be thrown himself and be carried away by crows. Buriki can scan, connect to electronics, and use electrical attacks. And Lion has a lot of strength, able to lift heavy objects like bells, fallen trees, and large vegetables. Outside of that, several game specific abilities coming with Tingle include his slingshot, his scary face, and the train worked on by Azusa. I think that's plenty, don't you.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Kakashi Throw

Kakashi will let himself be picked up by his companions and get thrown as a light projectile.

Side B: Buriki Zap

Buriki will zap enemies with a jolt of electricity, holding them in place for just a moment and letting the trio add on more attacks.

Up B: Fearless Crows

A group of crows will fly down, grab Kakashi, and carry him off, Buriki and Lion holding onto his feet and trying to save him. After a while, the crows will let go and the three will fall.

Down B: Lift the Bell

Lion will strain to lift a giant bell, launching it into the air so that it comes down hard a short distance in front of the trio.

Final Smash: Azusa Liner

The trio will jump out of the way as a train conducted by an excited Azusa comes barreling across the stage, slamming into any in its way.

Entrance: All three will pop out of the book from the game.

Taunts: Up, Buriki and Lion will toss Kakashi into the air. Side, Buriki will scan her companions and tilt her head to the side. Down, Lion will crouch with feat and his companions will comfort him.

Thanks for reading! Next up, the person who taught Tingle how to fight in his original game.

Character Sheet: Pinkle

PINKLE

Now, let's cover a small batch of new characters from the obscure side of the Zelda series, most if not all hailing from the Tingle series such as Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love. They may not be household names, but they made their case enough for me to accept them in. They are:

1. Pinkle

2. Tingle's Troupe

3. Aba

4. Yamori

5. Uncle Rupee

6. Majiyo

7. Segare

8. Oinker

First up is Pinkle, originally introduced as a save-point/virtual girlfriend for Tingle provided by Uncle Rupee in order to help him gather as many rupees as possible, before it is revealed that she is the daughter of the Grand Fairy imprisoned by the villain. Though released in the end, she never appears in the sequel. She doesn't do much outside of saving your game, but I have chosen to go the echo fighter route with her, as she was designed to be a female counterpart for Tingle.

Here's her moveset based on Tingle's:

Standard B: Rupee Slingshot

Replacing Tingle's old move is his slingshot from Balloon Trip of Love, with Pinkle taking it on as well.

Side B: Rumble

Tingle will now pull his opponents into a fight cloud, racking up heavy damage while they are inside. This will be taken on by Pinkle as well.

Up B: Balloon Float

A natural move to keep around for both of our fighters.

Down B: Trophy Smash

Same, but Pinkle's will instead be a trophy of the Grand Fairy instead of Tingle.

Final Smash: Rupee Blaster

Tingle will keep his Balloon Bombs from before, but Pinkle will instead take on the Rupee Blaster used to defeat Uncle Rupee. She will sit at the edge of the screen and blast the stage with a stream of rupees, guided by a crosshairs.

Entrance: She will emerge from the device she is trapped in.

Taunts: Up, she will mimic the "Koolooh Limpah" dance. Side, she will do her little animation to save your game. Down, she will hold up a full bag of rupees and look impressed.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Tingle's trio of companions appearing in Balloon Trip of Love.

Tingle/CDi Returning Characters

 TINGLE/CDi RETURNING CHARACTERS

Alright, now that those games are finished up, let's go through our list and update any characters in dire need of an update (or more accurately, any that appeared that already have a moveset laid out).

So, right off the bat, we have Link and Zelda both returning, mainly as the protagonists of the CDi games. While the movesets generally try to grasp the concepts of the core games with the items used, it's just different enough that it could become it's own moveset, but I don't have a clear person to take it on though. There is a lot of design inspiration in these games pulled straight from the TV show, such as Link's characterization, Zelda's design, and King Harkinian being the name of Zelda's father, so I'd like to hold off, and incorporate ideas from these when I get to that, if that's okay.

Tingle is another returning fighter, being the protagonist of all major Tingle games. He has a lot of returning moves, such as his balloons, his maps, his bombs, and his fireworks, all of which I included before, and a lot of the new stuff I think I'd like to save for characters more unique to these games, however, if the slingshot was not already part of it, I'd like to incorporate that somehow, and the fight cloud is pretty iconic seeing it's almost basically the only move in the first game. More on that when we get to Pinkle, I think, as she'd make a solid echo fighter.

Ganon, or "Gannon" I guess, appears as the villain of the three CDi games, though his boss battles are pretty basic, and I think I like his moveset as is already. Though, when we get to the TV show version, I might factor in his flaming skulls just like Link and Zelda.

Outside of that, a lot of core enemy types that currently have movesets appeared throughout this set of games, but with nothing particularly noteworthy added to them, so I think we'll leave them as is.

Thanks for reading! Next up, I think we'll tackle that Pinkle echo fighter immediately.

Zelda's Adventure

ZELDA'S ADVENTURE

And now for the final Zelda game of the Phillips CDi, this time developed by Viridis, and, in my opinion, the worst of the three if only for the fact that the other two had "so bad they're good" cutscenes the internet has come together to laugh at. Zelda's Adventure is just a top-down game set against a bland gray landscape where you can barely tell what's going on half the time, with a few random live action cutscenes here and there.

Zelda is our playable character again this time, working to rescue Link from, ahem, "Gannon." Her main weapon is a wand that she uses to cast various spells. These spells include: throwing a boomerang, shooting a bow and arrow, throwing a sword, throwing a dagger, swinging a mallet, jousting with a lance, swinging a club, and throwing an axe (ah, yes, "spells") but also summoning whirlwinds, shooting flames, shooting feathers, firing gold, green, and blue sparkles, firing a wave of sound, and creating a wall of flames (non-quotational spells).

Besides Zelda, Link is our "damsel in distress" of sorts, while the wizard Gaspra and the old woman Shurmak act as Zelda's guides and mentors. There are a number of other random NPCs scattered throughout, all mostly appearing in live-action cutscenes.

"Gannon" acts as your main villain, with a pretty basic boss fight. His bosses include the ogre Llort, the wolfman Pasquinade, the giant bird Aviana, the grim reaper-like Malmord, the blob Agwanda, the bear Ursore, and the dragon Warbane, with minibosses including the goblin Sardak, a disturbing-looking Pols Voice, a cloud called Vapora, a Sea Monster, a swamp creature called Kelpie, Knights, and an archer named Maxus.

As for enemies, Bago-Bagos, Deelers, Gibdos, Goriyas, Iron Knuckles, Keese, Lanmolas, Leevers, Moblins, Octoroks, Peahats, Stalfos, Zoras, Tektites, Wallmasters, Wizzrobes, Vires, and Zols all appear and are practically unrecognizable unless you're looking at a Wiki that says that's what they are.

This game had actual dungeons to it, as opposed to its predecessors, including the Shrine of Earth, the Shrine of Illusion, the Shrine of Air, the Shrine of Destiny, the Shrine of Water, the Shrine of Strength, and the Shrine of Fire.

Anyway, that should be about it. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Link: sword, shield, bell, bombs, water of life, winged helmet, Power Glove, rope, lantern, snowball, Book of Koridai

Zelda: sword, shield, flute, bombs, water of life, shroud, Power Glove, rope, lantern, Wand of Gamelon, wand, boomerang, bow and arrow, sword, dagger, mallet, lance, club, axe, whirlwinds, flames, feathers, gold, green, and blue sparkles, wave of sound, wall of flames

King Harkinian

Tingle: fight cloud, money management, fireworks, make maps, fly with balloons, drop bombs, cook, shovel, bat, stretch and leap, rupee blast, baseball, slingshot, rope, train car, scary face

Pinkle: potential echo fighter or gimmick rep

Tingle's companions (Kakashi, Buriki, and Lion): crawl, pick things up, get thrown, carried by crows, scan, connect to electricity, trip, lift bell, knock tree over, pick vegetables, slingshot, scary face, seeds, train car?

Gwonam

Gaspra/Shurmak: I think my current working concept is to work in representation for these games into the movesets of the TV versions of Link, Zelda, and maybe King Harkinian, since they seem to be drawing a lot of inspiration from that show.

Ganon/Gannon: flaming skulls

Sensei, Azusa, Iona, Liar, and Princess

Aba: potential gimmick rep

Teddy Todo/other bodyguards

Yamori: ninja blade, hide, disguise, leap, kite, smoke bombs

Uncle Rupee: sofa, lightning, table shields, cats, grand form, green cloud, giant head, bodyguards with rupee guns

Majiyo: shapeshift, teleport, become gigantic, float, bee, worm, snake, final form

Oinker: bombs, swords, shields, lances, spells, rolling around on balls, sword spin, rage circle, more Oinkers, meteors, float, slash, waves of magic

Captain Stalfos: fireball, swords

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

ZELDA: THE WAND OF GAMELON

Today, let's cover the other game made by Imagination Studios and the second of three games made for the Phillips CDi. It's every bit as bad, it's got all the same horrible animation for the cutscenes, but hey, it stars Zelda this time, going on a quest to save the kingdom of Gamelon from an invasion by Ganon.

Zelda uses the same sword and shield that Link uses, and most of her items are the same, except for the Wand of Gamelon that basically takes the place of the Book of Koridai, and a shroud that replaces the winged helmet. That's about it really, so while it is the first real playable appearance of Zelda, it's mostly in name only.

As for our supporting cast, Link and King Harkinian both return, as well as Impa in her first true game appearance, though I'd still like to thing Ocarina of Time was. Just like before, there's a ton of NPCs you can visit for various story purposes to move the game along, none particularly standing out.

Ganon is our main villain once again, and, just like before, he has a set of bosses working with him, this time being Gibdo, Iron Knuckle, a trio of Witches, Wizzrobe, a wizard named Hektan, and a wolfman named Omfak. Just like before, their boss battles are pretty basic. Most of the same enemies returned for this game, with the same models and everything. Vire is really the only big one that didn't appear before.

The game takes place mostly into the Kingdom of Gamelon, with notable locations such as the plain of Aru Ainu, Dordung Cave, the Fairy Pool, Gobiyan ship, Hanyu forest, the village of Kobitan, Reesong Palace, the Shrine of Gamelon, Shutoy Lake, Tykogi Tower, and Washubi Swamp.

That should be about all we need. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Link: sword, shield, bell, bombs, water of life, winged helmet, Power Glove, rope, lantern, snowball, Book of Koridai

Tingle's companions (Kakashi, Buriki, and Lion): crawl, pick things up, get thrown, carried by crows, scan, connect to electricity, trip, lift bell, knock tree over, pick vegetables, slingshot, scary face, seeds, train car?

Gwonam: Probably not. If he was going to recur, then I would have said so. Maybe Harkinian? Let's wait to see what the show offers us.

Special Bonus: All Mario Series Victory and Losing Screens

SUPER SMASH BROS. UNIVERSE

MARIO ALL-STARS VICTORY AND LOSING SCREENS

Here's a little something else I've been working on, things I've been kicking around. Though they are much heavier based on the Multiversus and Nick All-Star Brawl victory and losing screens than the current Smash concept. (Some feature interacts between the winner and loser, not sure how they would function together).

1.       Pauline: Performing “Jump Up, Superstar” with her band.

a.       An 8-bit Donkey Kong will pick her up and carry her away.

2.       Jumpman: Locking up a cage with his opponent inside.

a.       He will get kicked and land on his back unmoving.

3.       Mario: Grabbing a flag and pulling it down.

a.       He will make the Mario 64 death sound and slump to the ground.

4.       Luigi: Celebrating and stumbling, rubbing his head in embarrassment.

a.       He will scream in terror and run away.

5.       Koopa Troopa: Spinning around really fast inside its shell and popping out.

a.       It will be shot out of its shell and then explode into a blue coin.

6.       Foreman Spike: Standing proudly in front of his building.

a.       His building will crash down on top of him.

7.       Goomba: The opponent running at the Goomba, touching it, and then performing the death animation as the Goomba keeps walking.

a.       It will flatten and then disappear.

8.       Piranha Plant: The opponent will run at a pipe and the plant will burst out of it.

a.       The plant will spin then flop to the ground dead.

9.       Bowser: He will roar in triumph as his symbol shrinks the screen to black and he laughs.

a.       He will fall into lava, try to get out once, then sink.

10.   Toad: He will be surrounded by a bunch of other Toads who toss him into the air.

a.       He will sit on his butt as a word bubble appears above him saying “Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle.”

11.   Blooper: It will skim through water and burst out of it.

a.       It will thrash around in the water before sinking below the waves.

12.   Cheep Cheep: It will leap out of the water and flop around

a.       It will flip upside down as if hit by a fireball, then sink.

13.   Lakitu & Spinies: It will spin down and wave around a checkered flag.

a.       The Lakitu will perform a KO animation, leaving its sad cloud behind.

14.   Hammer Bro: It will juggle hammers with a second Bro.

a.       It will give off its death cry and spin off toward the screen.

15.   Buzzy Beetle: The Buzzy will tuck into its shell and go to sleep.

a.       The Buzzy will tuck into its shell and get knocked into lava.

16.   Princess Peach: “Oh, did I win?”

a.       She will find herself locked in a hanging cage like she’s normally held in.

17.   Ninji: It will pose and throw down a smoke screen before disappearing.

a.       It will sit on its butt and shake its head sadly.

18.   Birdo: She will descend on her swing and blow out kisses.

a.       She will cross her arms and look a little “Tsundere” about it.

19.   Beezo: A trio of them will swoop in and pull off some aerial maneuvers.

a.       The Beezo will crash and burn with burnt wings.

20.   Mouser: He will toss a bomb behind him and then fix his glasses when it explodes.

a.       He will look like he just got exploded by his own bombs.

21.   Pokey: It will launch its head into the air and then stretch its body up to catch it.

a.       Its entire body will fall apart as if its head had been struck.

22.   Tryclyde: Its three heads will snap at the screen then breath fire into the air.

a.       It will pop of the screen as if you’ve just defeated it.

23.   Bob-Omb: The bomb will light its wick, close its eyes, and then look around in surprise when it’s a dud.

a.       It will run around glowing red, stop, and then explode.

24.   Flurry: It will skate in and perform a figure skating technique.

a.       It will slide right off a cliff and into icy water.

25.   Wart: Bottles of captive fairies will surround him as he laughs maniacally.

a.       His dead body will be carried along a line of fairies.

26.   Fursuit Mario: He will run forward and pass into the dark zone at the end of a Super Mario 3 level.

a.       His body will flash as he reverts back to just Mario.

27.   Dry Bones: It will celebrate for a moment and then go to sleep, collapsing back into a pile of bones.

a.       It will collapse into a pile of bones, its eye glow going out.

28.   Boom Boom: He will growl and throw himself into a tornado spin.

a.       He will sit and look like he’s moping about his loss.

29.   The Koopalings: The seven of them will stack together on top of Lemmy’s ball.

a.       The seven will teeter in a stack before crashing down on top of each other.

30.   Thwomp: It will come crashing down, then close its eyes and rise back out of frame.

a.       It will hop up and down angrily inside of a green-lit cage.

31.   Boo: The Boo will be celebrating, then notice the player and cover its face quickly.

a.       It will spin out as if struck by the tail and disappear, its “Ghosts never truly die” message popping up.

32.   Chain Chomp: It will break free of its chain, bounce for a second, then smash into a cage behind it.

a.       It will bite onto something hard, crack its teeth, then start to tear up.

33.   Spike: It will heft up its spike ball and then swallow it once again.

a.       Its spike bar will start rolling back toward it and it will run away.

34.   Pionpi: A group of them will start hopping toward the screen.

a.       A charm will appear on the Pionpi’s forehead and it will disappear in a poof.

35.   Tatanga: He will take Daisy into his ship and take off into space.

a.       His ship will start to smoke and list downwards.

36.   Princess Daisy: She will putt a golf ball, then wave and say “Hi, I’m Daisy!”

a.       She will get electrocuted and make that one weird sound she makes.

37.   Doctor Mario: He will roll a pill along his shoulders and then pop it and grab it.

a.       He will look sick and have to rest for a minute.

38.   Rex: The Rex will try to roar like a T-Rex but only let out a squeak.

a.       The Rex will scrunch up like it does when jumped on.

39.   Chargin’ Chuck: The Chuck will cross the endzone line, jump and throw down its football.

a.       It will sit down on the ground with its helmet off, looking dizzy.

40.   Monty Mole: The Mole will wipe its brow and lean back against its tank.

a.       It will hop up and dig back underground.

41.   Wiggler: It will collide with the camera in a rage, then shake its head and snap out of it.

a.       It will be completely steamed and stomp the ground in a rage.

42.   Mechakoopa: It will keep walking around until it winds down and goes to sleep.

a.       It will start to spark and break down.

43.   Mario Kart: The racer will skid across the finish line as the first place pedestal pops up beneath it.

a.       The driver will cross in last place and drive along sadly to silence.

44.   Wanda: Wanda will struggle with a bucket and manage to pull it off.

a.       Wanda will have a bucket stuck to her head and bang into walls.

45.   King Bob-Omb: He will lean back on his throne as Bob-Ombs explode into fireworks behind him.

a.       He will lay on his back shaking for a moment before exploding into a star.

46.   Whomp: It will get steamed up and then slam down, leaving its opponent as a pancake.

a.       The Whomp will lie face down as their opponent butt bashes into their crack.

47.   Mr. Blizzard: A Christmas wreath will land on the snowman’s neck and it will spin happily.

a.       It will spin around and tip sideways before shrinking.

48.   Koopa Kid: It will be crowned star player with the typical Party fanfare.

a.       It will be floating by balloons that will pop and send it falling.

49.   Plum: The golfer will kneel and withdraw their ball as “Hole-in-One” appears.

a.       The golfer will keep puttering around one hole, just barely missing it each time.

50.   Kid: Same animation as Plum’s, but with the Game Boy Color’s version of it.
