Queen Seline

QUEEN SELINE

Though the Zelda cartoon was short lived, the series did see a little more life in a handful of issues run by Valiant Comics. These comics introduced a couple of original characters, the most prominent being the queen of a neighboring land.

This is Queen Seline, an old friend of Harkinian and surrogate aunt to Zelda. She would travel to Hyrule seeking their help after her magic is stolen, and would later reappear when Link travels to her kingdom and helps her against a usurper, Dark Link.

As a fighter, she will have very high magical skills, proving more than capable of defending her kingdom alone when at full power. Her moveset will pull from the comics she appears in.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Character Sheet: Queen Seline

QUEEN SELINE

There's not much point to a big returning character review this time around, so let's cover the small handful of characters we were able to pull from the Legend of Zelda cartoon series created by DiC, and the few western comics published under the Zelda series banner. We have eleven to add, including:

1.     TV Link

2.     TV Zelda

3.     King Harkinian

4.     Queen Seline

5.     Roam

6.     Sing

7.     Doof & Automaton

8.     Sleezenose

9.     TV Ganon

10.  Goriya

11.  Water Monster

Today, let's cover Queen Seline, an original character to the Valiant Comics who appeared in two storylines across the Zelda series' short run. She is the queen of the neighboring kingdom of Calatia, an old friend of King Harkinian, maternal figure to Zelda, and a powerful mage. Link also apparently comes from Calatia originally. Though she is without magic for most of her first story, she still offered up just enough to work with.

With magic, she wields powerful magic, able to transform eight enemies into frogs at once from all directions around her, and singlehandedly defends her kingdom from intruders. Without magic, she can still use her wand as a battering weapon and is quite adept with a horse. We can probably count in the jar that stole her magic too, if we want. Finally, she does play tennis, if we need it.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Frog Spell

She will cast a powerful spell straight in front of her that will transform anyone hit by it into a useless frog for a few seconds.

Side B: Magicless Wand

She will whip out her wand and strike forward with it, bashing an enemy fighter over the head with it.

Up B: Horse Leap

Her horse will appear under her and leap upward into the air a moderate distance.

Down B: Magic Jar

She will pull out the jar used to steal her own magic, opening it and drawing out "magic" from her opponent, heavily lowering their stats for a short time.

Final Smash: Eight-Way Curse

She will regain her magic powers and fire out bright blasts of light in eight directions, blowing everyone caught by the blasts away.

Entrance: She will ride in on her horse.

Taunts: Up, she will catch a tennis ball in midair with her racquet. Side, she will hold out her hand and cause magic to appear. Down, she will break open the jar and restore herself.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Cyborg 002 . . . I mean, Roam.

The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

Today, let's cover the run of Zelda comics run by Valiant. This run was published between 1990 and 1991 with six issues and twelve stories total. It . . . seems to be set in the same universe as the cartoon, albeit Link has a slightly different design and he and Zelda are a hair nicer to each other. It even had what I thought was a really great story arc where Link gained the Triforce of Power and ended up being corrupted by it.

Link, Zelda, Ganon, Impa, and King Harkinian all appear here, with not too much new to talk about, alongside a lot of recurring enemies from the series, as well as a few from Zelda II, like Dairas and Dark Link. A few new characters include Captain Krin, the captain of the guard, who doesn't seem to do too much on screen; Bagu, Link's friend who is implied to be a strong fighter, but sadly, the only thing we see him do on screen is lift people up; and Queen Seline, the queen of a nearby kingdom and powerful magic user. She is shown to be able to cast powerful eight-way spells that turn people into frogs and defend her kingdom from attack, and even without her magic, can ride a horse, fight using her magic wand as a weapon, and play tennis.

Here's what we've got so far:

Link: kick, sword, sword beam, pillow, magic pouch, swing, shield, lasso, springboard, wind whistle, power bracelet, force field ring, surf on shield

Zelda: punch, reflect with a pan, grow with magic, launch from a tree, bow, boomerang, crossbow, raise on Triforce, ice, fire, shields, lemons, banana peels

Sprite

King Harkinian: water park, CDi games rep?

Impa

Ganon: teleport, lightning, summon enemies, bombs, fire, chains, crystal ball, suction, control jewel, capture staff, wand of power

Goriya: Possible catch-all for enemy representation here, as it is the most prominent enemy type in the show that has not yet gotten a moveset. If so, staff, bone bow, capture staff, bomb, frog transformation, boomerang, giant magnet.

Prince Façade: horse, shield, crossbow

Sing: Pegasus, leap, sai, sai beam

Sleezenose: fake sword, lockpick, beehives, bee catapult, box of bees

Doof/Automaton: automaton, animate, bear hug, broom, fake Moblin

Witch of Walls

Water Monster: splash, flood, snake, crab, fish, tentacle, lightning

Captain Krin

Bagu: pick up

Queen Seline: magic, frog transformation, jar that steals magic, horse, wand as weapon, defense, tennis

Stages:

Zelda's Castle

Ganon's Lair

Water Park

Calatia
