Character Sheet: The Gimmighoul Line

GIMMIGHOUL/GHOLDENGO

And now, we come to the 999^th and 1000^th Pokemon in the roster, a pair of Pokemon based on little greedy spirits and mimics, who live in treasure chests and hoard coins, Gimmighoul evolving into Gholdengo once you have collected 999 special coins for it. Gimmighoul is another with a limited movepool, so, as an Assist Trophy, it will just land on the stage and suck up items and coins into it.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

FRIGIBAX/ARCTIBAX/BAXCALIBUR

Now, we’ll skip over a bunch of new evolutions and twelve Paradox Pokemon to come to Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur, our Pseudo-Legendaries for the generation. They are a Dragon/Ice combo that pull heavily from the design of Godzilla, as well as the Spinosaur, with a large icy sword growing out of their back.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

Side B: Dragon Claw > Glaive Rush (III)

 

Up B: Icy Wind

Character Sheet: Dondozo and Tatsugiri

DONDOZO/TATSUGIRI

Skipping over Veluza, we now come to the fourth and fifth Titan Pokemon who serve as the bosses of Arven’s storyline. I considered doing the Titans all together in one post later, but I think we have more than enough distinct groups I’ll be covering later, so I think I won’t. Anyway, Dondozo is based on a Wels catfish with a bit of a sushi chef mixed in, while Tatsugiri is a shrimp, as well as sushi and sashimi. Initially, it appears as though Dondozo is the main titan, until you discover that the Tatsugiri it “ate” is controlling it from inside its mouth.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Aqua Tail | Water Gun

 

Side B: Wave Crash | Dragon Pulse

 

Up B: Heavy Slam | Helping Hand

Next, we have our third line of dogs from this generation, Greavard and Houndstone, spooky ghost dogs with candles and headstones on their heads, that drain your life force from you the more you play with them. So, basically, I would die. I probably wouldn’t even hesitate.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

Up B: Play Rough > Phantom Force

 

Down B: Tail Whip > Charm

Character Sheet: Cyclizar and Its Paradoxes

CYCLIZAR/KORAIDON/MIRAIDON

A couple of generations ago, when I covered Carbink and Diancie, I mentioned that if a regular mon and a legendary in the same generation were distinctly tied together, I would do them together. Today, I will be covering Cyclizar and its legendary Paradox forms, Koraidon and Miraidon. They are based on fan-throated lizards, mixed with motorcycles, with Koraidon having a feathered dinosaur vibe to it and Miraidon being more like a hover cycle you might see in science fiction. They’re also your steed through most of the game, taking the place of your bike.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Dragon Claw | Breaking Swipe | Thunder Shock

 

Side B: Rapid Spin | Collision Course | Parabolic Charge

 

Up B: Dragon Rush | Giga Impact | Electro Drift

FINIZEN/PALAFIN

Now, we’ll skip over the Wiglett line for now, as well as Bombirdier, and come instead to Finizen and Palafin. Finizen are based on dolphins, a Pokemon concept that has not been done for far too long. Palafin looks like an ordinary Finizen at first, until it ducks into a phone booth—excuse me, back into its PokeBall, and re-emerges as a superhero to take on the attacking evil-doers.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Aqua Jet > Jet Punch

 

Side B: Supersonic > Wave Crash

 

Up B: Acrobatics > Flip Turn

 

Down B: Dive > Aqua Tail

 

Final Smash: Water Tera-Type Jet Punch

Now, we come to what ended up being one of the single most popular lines of the generation: Tinkatink, Tinkatuff, and Tinkaton. They pull mainly from dwarves and other mythological beings known for smithing and crafting weaponry, building giant hammers for themselves that they famously use to knock Corviknight from the sky and strip them of their metals.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Metal Claw > Brutal Swing (II) > Gigaton Hammer (III)

 

Side B: Draining Kiss > Flash Cannon (II)

 

Up B: Fairy Wind

 

Down B: Rock Smash > Slam (III)

Taunts: Tinkering with their hammer, spotting a Corviknight high in the sky and striking it out of the air, things like that.

Next, we have Flittle and Espathra, a line of Pokemon based on Ostriches, with Psychic abilities. They probably also pull a little from the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Either that, or the Pokemon designers are just big fans of Sia.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Psybeam

 

Side B: Quick Attack > Drill Peck

 

Up B: Uproar > Lumina Crash

 

Down B: Baby-Doll Eyes > Dazzling Gleam

 

Final Smash: Psychic Tera-Type Lumina Crash

Taunts: Doing that one Ostrich mating dance, putting on a snobby fashionista pose (think Edna Mode), things like that.

RELLOR/RABSCA

Now, we come to Rellor and Rabsca, a pair of Pokemon based on dung beetles, complete with the giant ball of . . . well, Pokemon says it’s a ball of dirt. We’re just going with that. Rabsca also pulls from scarab beetles as well as the Egyptian god Khepri, a giant scarab that rolls the sun across the sky.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Mud Shot > Psybeam

 

Side B: Rollout

 

Up B: Struggle Bug > Revival Blessing

 

Down B: Sand Attack > Confusion

 

Final Smash: Rock Tera-Type Rollout

I’ve mostly been doing this with the type of the move, so they get that extra STAB bonus, but this time I’m really tempted to make it Fire Tera-Type so that it’s literally Khepri’s sun.

Taunts: Rolling its ball around, sniffing it and looking grossed out, things like that.

CAPSAKID/SCOVILLAIN

Skipping over the Toedscool line and Klawf for now, we now come to Capsakid and Scovillain. For decades upon decades, one single concept for a Grass/Fire Pokemon has reigned supreme, that being a pepper Pokemon, and now, we finally have it. It’s . . . not the best version of the concept I’ve seen, but I suppose the better concept existing in fanart really couldn’t be used by the official company anymore, so it is what it is. They are based on peppers, primarily Jalapenos and Habaneros, with Scovillain growing a second head, and pulling a bit from Vaudeville villains from old Westerns.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Bullet Seed

 

Side B: Razor Leaf > Flamethrower

 

Up B: Sunny Day >  Overheat

 

Down B: Leafage > Spicy Extract

 

Final Smash: Fire Tera-Type Flamethrower > Mega Scovillain

Taunts: Walking bowlegged like a Western villain, fanning its mouth like it just ate a spicy pepper, things like that.

Our next line is Bramblin and Brambleghast, yet another Ghost/Grass combo based this time on tumbleweeds, like those you see blowing through every Western movie out there.

Up B: Rapid Spin > Phantom Force

Next, we have our first ever Normal/Poison combo with Shroodle and Grafaiai. Shroodle is a little shrew with a paint brush for a tongue, that then evolves into Grafaiai, an aye-aye with paint covering its long finger that it uses to finger paint all over every surface it can find.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:

 

Standard B: Poison Fang > Poison Jab

 

Side B: Fury Swipes > Doodle

 

Up B: Switcheroo > Knockoff

 

Down B: Acid Spray

 

Final Smash: Normal Tera-Type Doodle

Now, we come to the second set of dogs introduced in this generation, Maschiff and Mabosstiff. These are based more on pit bulls and mastiffs and other dogs commonly used as guard dogs, with some inspiration pulling from a mafia don and his goons.

Next, we finally come to the Regional birds of the generation, placed weirdly late into the Dex for some reason. Wattrel is based on a petrel, while Kilowattrel pulls more from a frigatebird, both having Electric powers as well.

TADBULB/BELLIBOLT

Now, we have a fun little line in Tadbulb and Bellibolt, a tadpole mixed with a lightbulb that evolves into a frog with fake eyes on the side of its head and a plasma globe in its belly. It also bears a distinct resemblance to avocadoes, but I . . . think that’s probably a coincidence.

Here’s the moveset I came up with:
