Super Mario-Kun

SUPER MARIO-KUN

So, right off the bat, I do feel the need to apologize. My research into the various manga has been spotty at best, and I have often had to resort to relying on simple synopses for my understanding of what happened in them all. I did my best, I really did. I searched everywhere I could, gave myself several headaches and my computer several viruses, and did everything possible short of actually buying the physical books from Japan and bankrupting myself in the process. Just know, there will be holes here. I did do everything I could to at least verify there weren't potential characters in those missing sections.

So first up is Super Mario-Kun, the most famous Mario manga, written by Yukio Sawada and has been running continuously since 1991. As far as I can tell though, it is mostly just a humorous retelling of the plots of various games, with Mario and company coming across the various elements of said games and telling a bunch of poop and fart jokes in response. What I was able to read wasn't my speed, but hey, apparently a lot of people out there do enjoy it.

The most important takeaway here, in terms of characters, is the manga version of Mario himself. The manga portrays him as an uncontrollable, nigh-indestructible agent of chaos and randomness with nothing running through his brain except the next pun he can make to exasperate everyone around him, and responding to every hit he takes with Looney Tunes slapstick. Across the various chapters and synopses I read, he: swung golf clubs, caused explosions, used the cap, star, fire flower, and mushrooms, gained a Moon power-up, created clones of himself, wielded a Mushroom Sword, mixed and matched various power ups, rolled around, used the fly swatter from Mario Paint, flew with bunny ears, drilled through the ground, inflated like a balloon, turned into a statue, wore the armor of Bowser's troops, injected a giant syringe, fired a pipe bazooka, became a chef, wore egg shells as armor, used the caps from Super Mario 64, threw a lightning bolt, wore gloves that caused friction, used a time machine, fired stars from a gun, got flattened, and used a spring made of ice. I'd say that gives him enough to work with.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Mario-Kun: golf clubs, explosions, cap, star, fire flower, mushrooms, Moon power-up, clones, Mushroom Sword, mixed power ups, rolled around, fly swatter, bunny ears, drilled, balloon, statue, armor of Bowser's troops, giant syringe, pipe bazooka, chef, egg shell armor, caps from Super Mario 64, lightning bolt, friction gloves, time machine, star gun, flattened, ice spring

Wario Ware: Get It Together!

WARIO WARE: GET IT TOGETHER!

Today, let's go over the newest game in the Wario Ware series, Wario Ware: Get It Together! In many ways, it is a standard Wario Ware game, with all the core microgame concepts and characters returning, except with a much more involved story mode with all the characters actually interacting with each other full time and the characters actually being playable in the microgames, each having special abilities you can use to accomplish the required tasks.

The plot sees Wario and his crew getting together to put together a new game, but due to Wario's laziness during programming, a bunch of bugs corrupted the game, resulting in them all getting pulled into it and having to play the games themselves. All of our favorites return, including Mona, Jimmy T., Dribble and Spitz, Kat and Ana, 9-Volt, 18-Volt, and 5-Volt, Ashley and Red, Young Cricket and Master Mantis, Dr. Crygor, Penny Crygor, and Mike, Orbulon, and even Lulu (I'd love to know how that hiring process went after her and Wario's enmity in the last game).

The controls are fairly basic for all of them, each having a specific gimmick. Wario has a jetpack and can charge forward, a familiar move from the Wario Land games. Young Cricket can perform a super jump, nothing new there. 18-Volt can throw the little disc on his head as a projectile, certainly something that can be a standard B or something. Mona rides her scooter, an old classic, and now throws a boomerang (add that if necessary). Dribble and Spitz have a 2-player gimmick with Dribble always firing a bazooka right and Spitz firing left. Dr. Crygor has a jetpack like he often has. 9-Volt rides around on a skateboard and uses a yo-yo as a weapon. Mike fires off music notes upward as projectiles (definitely can use that one). Kat and Ana are constantly bouncing. Jimmy T. can perform a super dash. Ashley flies around on her broom and casts spells as projectiles. Orbulon flies in his flying saucer and can pick things up from above with his tractor beam.

5-Volt's an interesting one. They took her "angry" form made famous by Game & Wario, and turned it into a sort of split personality that astrally projects from her body when she falls asleep, moves around freely, then instantly teleports her to its location by waking her up. Honestly, she basically did Haruno Sakura better in one game than the actual character did in 700 chapters and actually made use of the superpowered angry side. I sure hope the Wario Ware series never sees a three-year time skip wherein 5-Volt just decides to "mature out of" this superpower instead of training with and honing it. No mangak--I mean, game developer would be that stupid, right? Either way, new Up B. I don't remember what I had before, but it's not going to top this.

Red finally got to see a day as playable, though he mostly just flies around and drops bombs from above, so no upgrades for him today. Master Mantis can jump high enough to stick to the ceiling and walk around upside down. Lulu can now float by spinning her bow, and can finish it with a ground pound. New Up B for her too. And finally we have Penny Crygor, who this game did a lot of favors for. First of all, she got a brand new song just for her, and a catchy one at that, and she has personally invented a bubble shooting device called the Jet Tank 1, which she uses both to fire projectiles and as a flying contraption, giving her a personalized Up B and possible Standard B, meaning I think it's fair to upgrade her from echo to stand-alone character.

Character like Joe and 13-Amp return, alongside Leo, a rival ninja of Kat and Ana in their mini-story. Game Bugs also hop around everywhere and corrupt the game world around them, forming up into a big Wario monster for a boss battle. There's also the game's Supreme Developer, which is basically Wario's face super-imposed on an artistic representation of God. It's weird. Finally, we have Pyoro, a recurring character throughout the entire Wario Ware series as the protagonist of a popular game series which served as the catalyst for Wario making his microgame series in the first place. In this game, he plays a more active part, infiltrating Wario's game and acting as the final boss because he wanted to get in on the fun, becoming playable after his defeat. He can fly, stick out his tongue like Yoshi, and sends his eyes out to attack in his boss fight. All this, paired up with the little bits and pieces we've seen in previous games, means I think we've got ourselves a new character.

The internal world of Wario's game acts as the primary location of the game, with the characters finding each other and working together to defeat the bugs and get back to the real world. Outside of that, we see a lot of familiar locations, like Diamond City, Mona's House, Dr. Crygor's Lab, Penny's Lab, and so on. Not a whole lot special.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Wario: jetpack, charge

Mona: scooter, boomerang, pets

Character Sheet: Captain Skurvy

CAPTAIN SKURVY

Now, we have finished the television series, and we have SO many characters to cover, from all across the spectrum. There are a few characters here and there that might get a few upgrades to their movesets, mostly being the Donkey Kong cast (one example, I think Klump should absolutely have a Klaptrap gun now). But, there are so many that are so distinct from their game counterparts, I could only make a brand new slot for them. They are:

1.     Beezo

2.     Flurry

3.     Rex

4.     Tryclyde

5.     TV Mario

6.     TV Luigi

7.     Tommy Treehugger & Co-MC

24.  Genie

25. Brutius Maximus Grouchimus

26.  Captain Clump

27.  Bunsen

28.  Hercufleas

29.  Salvador Drainado

30.  Sergeant Kooperman

31.  Flab Boys

32.  James Blonde

33.  Vampa White

34.  Zero

35.  Captain Abidab

36.  Mugga the Medicine Woman

37.  Misaki

38.  Waldo the Wizard

39.  Quirks

40.  Queen Mushroomkhamen

41.  Wizard King of the West

42.  Junior

43.  Mighty Plumber

44.  Crime Wave Clyde

45.  Dino Riders

46.  Candy Kong

47.  Bluster Kong

48.  Eddie the Mean Old Yeti

49.  Baby Kong

50.  Kong Fu

51.  Metal Head

52.  Captain Skurvy

At long, long last, we have reached the end of the character sheets for this round with the recurring villain, Captain Skurvy. Captain Skurvy is basically the show's answer to Kaptain K. Rool while having him and K. Rool be separate characters. Skurvy his a buccaneering pirate captain bound and determined to steal the Crystal Coconut for himself, as the greatest treasure of Kongo Bongo. He is constantly accompanied by his crewmates Kutlass, Green Kroc, and Polly Roger, but they will all be folded into him and his moveset, as altogether they don't do enough to warrant a slot. Design-wise, he is basically Klump, just recolored orange with a pirate's hat and gear, which I was perfectly willing to just turn a blind eye to, but I guess the showrunners felt the need to explain it in one of their last episodes by having it be a big twist that he and Klump are each other's long lost brother.

As for his moves, he carries around a cannon that can fire cannonballs (a reference to both Kaptain K. Rool and the Kannon enemy, which he is), digs for buried treasure, throws around barrels, has three crewmates, one with a large cutlass, another being a parrot. He'd also be a logical choice for the Klaptrap guns various Kremlings use in the series, since his first episode does heavily involve a Klaptrap in its culmination.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Kannon

It is what he is, he might as well use it. He will hold out his cannon and fire off a cannonball, just as Kaptain K. Rool would.

Side B: Kutlass

He will point forward, and his henchman Kutlass will appear, slashing forward with his giant cutlass for which he is named.

Up B: Polly Roger

His backstabbing little birdbrain of an accomplice will appear, and Skurvy will grab hold of his legs, letting him carry him a short distance into the air.

Down B: Buried Treasure

Skurvy will pull out his shovel and dig into the ground at his feet, producing one of any number of items, which he may use at his disposal.

Final Smash: Klaptrap Unleashed

Based on the manner in which he is defeated in his debut episode, he will give a Klaptrap back his dentures, at which point the Klaptrap will begin devouring the stage, starting at the top and working his way toward the bottom, destroying every platform until there is nothing left to stand on. The stage will reappear after a few seconds.

Entrance: Skurvy will poke his head up from a hole he'd been digging.

Taunts: Up, he will do a little pirate jig. Side, he will hum a note from the song he used to sing to baby Klump. Down, he will check his map for a second.

50.  Kong Fu

51.  Metal Head

52.  Captain Skurvy

We finally reach our last week of character sheets! Today, let's cover Metal Head from the episode "The Big Switch-a-Roo." I understand this character has become a bit of a meme in certain corners of the internet. Either way, Metal Head is a robot built by Cranky to help out Bluster at his factory. Donkey Kong is left to guard and accidentally gets his and the robot's brains switched by one of Cranky's other inventions. This leads to all manner of shenanigans. Across the episode, we see the robot, either through Donkey Kong's control or its own, walk around, use a hammer, put together a barrel super fast, stomp on bananas, walk on its hands, hop around, and toss its own head.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Head Toss

Metal Head will forcibly remove its own head and chuck it hard across the stage as a projectile. It could possibly have a boomerang effect as it is magnetically pulled back to its body.

Side B: Barrel Maker

It will rapidly perform its primary function of putting together one of Bluster's barrels. If a character is unlucky enough to get caught in the move they will be trapped inside. If not, then a barrel will simply appear on the stage, to be used as an item later.

Up B: Hop to It

This is based upon one of its many misunderstood commands. It will straighten up and then hop up and down on its powerful legs, springing straight up.

Down B: Step on It

Another mistaken command. It will toss a bunch of bananas onto the ground and proceed to stomp on them, burying anyone caught in the attack, and leaving a slippery mess of banana peels behind.

Final Smash: I'm a Metal Head

This one is based more on the song Donkey Kong sings when he discovers the switch has taken place, arguably the most memetic part of the character. The background will turn psychedelic and three giant versions of Metal Head's head will appear, spinning around and around as they sing their song, damaging anyone they touch.

Entrance: It will be sitting limp with the brain switcher on its head, before it lights up and the robot comes to life.

Taunts: Up, a piece of toast will pop out of the toaster on its head. Side, it will take off its head and roll it along its shoulders. Down, it will slump over in a sleep mode.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's finally finish this character run with Captain Skurvy, dread pirate of the high seas (and a very caring brother)!

47.  Bluster Kong

48.  Eddie the Mean Old Yeti

49.  Baby Kong

50.  Kong Fu

51.  Metal Head

52.  Captain Skurvy

Today, let's cover Kong Fu, a one-off character from the episode, well, "Kong Fu." He is a martial artist ape who allies himself with the Kremlings in order to challenge Donkey Kong for the title of "Future Ruler of Kongo Bongo." He also used the same character model as Bluster, just with some elements switched around, so the whole episode had me thinking he was Bluster in disguise as a way to one-up Donkey Kong, and had to revise all of my notes at the end when that turned out to not be the case.

Anyway, across the episode, we see Kong Fu perform a number of basic martial arts, including a powerful karate chop, a series of rapid hits that leave a paper in ruins, and a strong grab and throw. He also disco dances in his introduction, and makes such claims in the song's lyrics of being eaten by a shark, escaping an avalanche, and riding the tails of a tornado. He is also shown to be exceptionally clever, and frequently meditates to gather his energy and focus his mind. His one weakness, of all things, is his crippling fear of the dark.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Karate Chop

First up is his powerful karate chop. He will lash out and strike, probably with comparable strength to Donkey Kong's giant punch.

Side B: Rapid Strike

This one is based on the move he uses in the beginning of the episode to destroy Donkey Kong's picture. He will strike with a series of rapid strikes, dealing damage with every blow.

Up B: Tornado Tail

Might as well legitimize one of his boasts. A small tornado will appear over Kong Fu's head. He will grab the end of it and it will carry him upward for a short distance.

Down B: Meditation

He will take on a crane-esque posture and meditate for a moment, restoring some of his HP.

Final Smash: Disco Dance

Disco lights will fill the stage as he breaks into a performance of his introduction song from the episode. The music will come to a head and he will perform a big finish, launching everyone nearby from the stage.

Entrance: He will appear in shadow, contrasted against the moon.

Taunts: Up, he will perform a martial arts pose. Side, he will wave his arms side to side like in his disco dance. Down, he will curl up and whimper as if it were dark.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover Metal Head, a rather memetic part of the show.

Today, we have Baby Kong. This one's a little tough to explain. Baby Kong appears in only two episodes of the series, "Ape Foo Young" and "Baby Kong Blues." In the first, Donkey Kong accidentally drinks a youth serum and gets transformed into a baby. In the second, Baby Kong is an entirely separate Kong that Donkey Kong offers to babysit to impress Candy. Same character model, referred to by the same name, everything. Personally, I believe that the second episode was supposed to be the introduction of Kiddy Kong into the series, but maybe they didn't have or weren't allowed the budget to construct a whole new character model, so they just put in one they already had and hoped no one was paying attention hard enough.

Either way, across the two episodes, we see this walking continuity error ride around on a vacuum cleaner, punch hard enough to send someone flying, grab and throw, cry and throw a tantrum loud enough to cause a small earthquake, bite, and throw things around all over the place. It's not much, but it's there. Maybe we can get Seth Rogen to voice him, since apparently that's an option now.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Giant Punch

Naturally, being the child version of Donkey Kong (maybe), this move will be brought with him. The baby will wind up a massive punch and then unleash it.

Side B: Vacuum Cleaner

He will start up the vacuum cleaner from Donkey Kong's house and ride it forward a short ways, before it gets caught on the cord and comes to a sudden stop.

Up B: Nanna Slamma!

Based on the traps Cranky has set up around his house, that DK frequently launches, Baby Kong will hop onto one and spring back upward into the sky.

Down B: Mess Maker

He will pull random objects from Donkey Kong's house (possibly using the original models) and throw them around haphazardly.

Final Smash: Temper Tantrum

Baby Kong will tear up and start to cry, building from just a loud noise to a full-on temper tantrum, shaking the stage and knocking fighters from it with the sheer force of it all.

Entrance: Donkey Kong will appear, drink a potion, and transform into a baby.

Taunts: Up, he will dance around and say "Nanna Slamma!" Side, he will roll around on a ball. Down, he will curl up and go to sleep for a second.

Thanks for reading! Next up is one of the few one-off characters of the series.
