Papercraft Stadium

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam brought the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario franchises together in a fun crossover. Although it didn’t have too many uniquely iconic locations, it did feature a mini-game wherein the player controlled giant cardboard mechs of various characters, hefted by armies of Toads and minions, with our heroes riding on top.

This stage will set the characters into the midst of one of these battles. They will start on top of the Papercraft Mario, its head their only platform as it moves around the stage, frequently clashing with other Papercrafts, which will form new platforms, giving the characters a constantly changing arena to battle on top of.

Nabbit

After the Wii came the Wii U, a system that sadly did not see much success for Nintendo financially. Nevertheless, they carried on and an installment of the 2D Platformer series New Super Mario Bros. was released for it. In it, we saw Mario, Luigi, and two Toads journeying to rescue Peach once again, but this time, found themselves frequently having to deal with a sneaky purple rabbit who likes to steal important items, forcing the heroes to chase him down.

This is Nabbit, who would go on to see a playable appearance in the game’s re-release New Super Luigi U, which removed Mario and left open a fourth slot that Nabbit readily took up. His gameplay was a sort of easy mode, with him being nearly invulnerable to all attacks. He would then crop up in adventure games and sports games and RPGs all across the board, though weirdly only a few sparse playable appearances.

As a fighter, he will naturally have one of the highest speed stats in the game, with really strong defense too to make up for his lack of offense. His moves will pull a little from his game of origin but also from his many other appearances, especially his appearance in the RPG titles.

Character Sheet: Mario & Luigi

 MARIO & LUIGI

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. At least one I thought was never going to happen in a million, billion years. But here we are. The first ten are all Mario regulars who finally took the step up to playable. The other sixteen are originals to the Mario & Luigi games (or Origami King) specifically.

1. Toadsworth

2. Captain Toad

3. Buzzy Beetle

4. King Bob-Omb

5. Pokey

6. Ninji

7. Thwomp

8. Whomp

9. Mechakoopa

10. Nabbit

11. Mario & Luigi

12. Prince Peasley

13. Prince Dreambert

14. Olivia

15. King Olly

16. Broque Monsieur

17. Massif Bros.

18. Cackletta

19. Fawful

20. Princess Shroob

21. The Dark Star

22. Antasma

23. Midbus

24. Shroob

25. Popple

26. Durmite/Wisdurm

Today, we'll be covering Mario and Luigi. Now, I know, I know, we already have a Mario and a Luigi and several other variants in between. Isn't it a bit extraneous to just have them both working as a pair. So, I guess to be more specific, this is Mario & Luigi as they appear in the Mario and Luigi RPG series, with moves based entirely on their tag-team abilities in those games, and stylized to look like the game series' distinct style. Their star companion Starlow will also be a technical third member of the team, as she will fly around them and appear in a number of moves and taunts.

Across the games, the brothers have a butt-ton of moves to work with, and I will do my best to sort them out for you. They have base moves like jumping and swinging their hammers, and they can also use hand-abilities like shooting fireballs and lightning. They can switch around which brother is in the front, which can then affect which abilities they can perform. For instance, with Mario behind Luigi, he can put fire to Luigi's back and make him run faster. But in the reverse way, Luigi can electrify and paralyze Mario and pull him backwards. They can also perform various jumps, like the Spin Jump to spin on top of each other, or the high jump to bounce off of each other. They can also either smack each other with a hammer to make them tiny and then smack them around like a ball, or bury them underground at which point they can then pop up under an item or unsuspecting enemy. They also have a ton of Super-Moves to be used in battle, any one of which can be utilized as the "Final Smash." Honestly, it's a take-your-pick on that one.

Here's the moveset I've come up with:

Standard B: Fire Bros. OR Thunder Bros.

My concept for them is almost two separate movesets. Pressing Down B will switch whichever brother is up front, and then they will have different moves across the board. Much like Min Min, A and B will function to control the different brothers in that state, A controlling the one up front, so that his Standard A move will utilize his fire or lightning as a mere projectile, but the B will control the one in the back. With Mario in the back, he will light a fireball on Luigi, giving him a boost of speed. Luigi in the back will let him freeze up Mario and move him around as a human shield and give them added defense.

Side B: Ball Bros. OR Dig Bros.

Side A will make use of the brothers' hammers, just swinging them around with little difference. Side B, however, if Luigi is in the back, he will smack and shorten Mario and then smack him in the butt, sending him flying forward as a ball. If Mario is in the back, he will send Luigi straight into the ground. Luigi will stay that way until you press up, at which point he will fly up out of the ground, striking any walking over him.

Up B: Spin Jump OR High Jump

If Luigi is in the back, he will jump up on top of Mario and the pair will spin in the famous spin jump. If you just press the command, they will raise and spin side to side, though you can make them fly upward with another upward press, or send them into a side drill with a sideways press. If Mario is in the back, Luigi will pull out a spring cap and let Mario hop on top of him and send him flying skyward.

Down B: Switch Bros.

Basically, this will just switch them.

Final Smash: Bros. Attack

Honestly, there are soooooooo many fitting for a final for them, and I honestly have no idea which to pick from the large number of them. So, my stance is, pick your favorite. I have a few, like the one where they fire a bunch of fireballs into a massive meteor that then slams down on the enemy, or the one where they hop into a bunch of pipes and fire them off. It's possible it could be different based on who's in front like the other moves. Whichever you pick.

Entrance: They'll rise from the ground in one of those big pipes with the two sets of footprints on them.

Taunts: Most of their victory poses are fun. Up could be their victory screen with them punching the air and saying "Go Weegee, Go Weegee." Side could have Starlow fly around them and pull at Luigi's mustache. Down, could have both brothers fall asleep and Starlow float around them like she can't believe they're sleeping at a time like this.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover the dashing prince of the Beanbean Kingdom, Prince Peasley!

 NABBIT

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. 15. King Olly

16. Broque Monsieur

17. Massif Bros.

18. Cackletta

19. Fawful

20. Princess Shroob

21. The Dark Star

22. Antasma

23. Midbus

24. Shroob

25. Popple

26. Durmite/Wisdurm

Today, let's cover Nabbit, a trickster rabbit originating in New Super Mario Bros. U and has since become a bit of a staple of the series, including, for our purposes today, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, where I'm halfway convinced he was switched out for Popple in the final stages because of Miyamoto's whole anti-complex-stories-and-characters thing. In Paper Jam, he will steal things and run away with them, as per usual, toss out spike balls to hinder his pursuers, burrow underground, create duplicates of himself, throw his bag as a projectile, and use stolen items, either offensively on his own or to help occasional allies. Some items from New Super Mario Bros. U might be considered as well.

Here is his moveset:

Standard B: Steal

He will grab any items nearby or any projectiles coming at him and stash them in his bag. He can then pull them out again for his own usage.

Side B: Spin and Throw

He will spin around with his bag really fast and throw it as a projectile. The amount of items stashed inside will affect the amount of damage done.

Up B: Baby Yoshi

This one is more based specifically on New Super Mario Bros. U and makes use of the Baby Yoshis that appeared there. Specifically, he will use its inflato-ability, causing the baby to inflate and carry him high into the sky.

Down B: Spike

He will pull out a pair of spiky rocks, tossing one to either side of him. They will stick in the ground and damage anyone who touches them.

Final Smash: Invulnerability

He will temporarily become incapable of taking damage at all and gain a boost of speed, allowing him to run around doling out damage and picking up as many items as possible.

Entrance: He will pop out of a burrow.

Taunts: Up, he will hop up and down excitedly. Side, he will put his hand over his eyes and look back and forth. Down, he will open his bag and inspect the contents.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we begin the RPG specific characters, starting with the tag-team of Mario & Luigi.

Character Sheet: Ninji

 NINJI

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. At least one I thought was never going to happen in a million, billion years. But here we are. The first ten are all Mario regulars who finally took the step up to playable. The other sixteen are originals to the Mario & Luigi games (or Origami King) specifically.

1. Toadsworth

2. Captain Toad

3. Buzzy Beetle

4. King Bob-Omb

5. Pokey

6. Ninji

7. Thwomp

8. Whomp

9. Mechakoopa

10. Nabbit

11. Mario & Luigi

12. Prince Peasley

13. Prince Dreambert

14. Olivia

15. King Olly

16. Broque Monsieur

17. Massif Bros.

18. Cackletta

19. Fawful

20. Princess Shroob

21. The Dark Star

22. Antasma

23. Midbus

24. Shroob

25. Popple

26. Durmite/Wisdurm

Here's another slightly less than expected one. You might know Ninjis as those little ninja-looking dudes who just kinda jump a lot. That said, a lot of games, especially the more recent RPGs like Origami King and Paper Jam, have used them a lot and have applied to them a number of stereotypical ninja tropes, such as creating shadow clones of themselves, using substitution, hiding behind fake walls, clinging to the ceiling and spinning down from above, and throwing shurikens (or more acurately, their paper selves as shurikens).

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Shuriken

The Ninji will throw a shuriken. Probably not themselves, though it can still be designed to look like one.

Side B: Lunge

Based on their most iconic move of sorts, the Ninji will spring forward and latch onto the face of their opponent.

Up B: Spring

The Ninji this time will spring upward very high as if leaping to the ceiling. The Ninji will then spin downward to attack those below.

Down B: Shadow Clone

This one's a bit of a defense/counter. The Ninji will create a couple of Shadow Clones. If the clone is attacked it will turn into a log and the Ninji will get away.

Final Smash: Ninja's Palace

The opponent will be taken into a cutscene wherein they will find themselves in a Shogun's Castle much like Shogun Studios. They will then look up to see Ninji hiding on the ceiling above. The screen will then be obscured behind rice paper as the horde of Ninji strike the opponent down.

Entrance: The Ninji will drop a fake wall and appear.

Taunts: Up, they will do the basic jumping animation. Side, they will take a sheet of paper and fold it into a shuriken. Down, they will pull up the false wall and hide behind it.

Thanks for reading! Next up . . . Eeeeeeeeeeee! I'm excited, not gonna lie. I'd main it.

 KING BOB-OMB

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. At least one I thought was never going to happen in a million, billion years. But here we are. The first ten are all Mario regulars who finally took the step up to playable. 6. Ninji

7. Thwomp

8. Whomp

9. Mechakoopa

10. Nabbit

11. Mario & Luigi

12. Prince Peasley

13. Prince Dreambert

14. Olivia

15. King Olly

16. Broque Monsieur

17. Massif Bros.

18. Cackletta

19. Fawful

20. Princess Shroob

21. The Dark Star

22. Antasma

23. Midbus

24. Shroob

25. Popple

26. Durmite/Wisdurm

Today, let's go over King Bob-Omb, who up until now, I had been mostly content to leave as just an extension of Bob-Omb, but with an actual instance of playability comes reconsideration just in case, and King Bob-Omb filling a supporting role in Paper Jam at the same time didn't help much. So, he's an echo now. Whee!

Here is his moveset:

Standard B: Explosion

Bigger than the others,

Side B: Cannon

Straight up Mario 64 cannons.

Up B: Albatoss

Down B: Bomb Squad

Maybe with other regular Bob-Ombs, or the Buddies.

Final Smash: Big Bomb

A really big one in his case.

Entrance: He will stand with his hands behind his back like in Mario 64.

Taunts: Up, maybe tossing up some small fireworks. Side, twirling his mustache. Down, hopping up and hitting the ground hard like he's just been thrown by Mario.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover one of our more unlikely entries: the Pokey!

Character Sheet: Kamek (Revision)

 KAMEK

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

I swear, I do not understand why the sports games feel the need to ignore this guy. He has got to be one of the most important Mario/Yoshi characters out there. This time around, he appeared as a minor supporting character to Baby Bowser in Partners in Time and acted as a major part in both Origami King and Paper Jam, Paper Jam as a major villain alongside his paper form, and Origami King as one of your companions throughout much of the second-to-last world of the game.

Throughout all of these games, he acts much as you would expect Kamek would, as the faithful companion and advisor to Bowser. He casts spells, rides around on a broomstick, teleports, summons enemies out of thin air, and creates duplicates of himself. He also shows the ability this time around to create magic barriers and force fields, as well as to create paper terrain to change up the environment on you. Let's see what we can do.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Magic Spell

Side B: Broomstick

Up B: Teleport

Down B: Duplicates
How about just a defense/counter move. He will just summon up two duplicates of himself, which will take hits directed at him, and will strike with a magical blast at the attacker.

Final Smash: Boss Battle

Entrance: Swoop in on his broom and do his little chuckle.

Taunts: Hold up his wand and wave it around for a second, is a good one. His chuckle, as mentioned before. Maybe cast a little magic and surprise himself.

Next up: Let's go over the Shy Guys and finish the revisions!

Character Sheet: Paper Mario (Revision)

 PAPER MARIO

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, we will cover Paper Mario, as he appears in the Paper Mario games. Obviously, he is the central character in Paper Mario: The Origami King, and is one of the three main characters from Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. Across these, he does have a few new moves, like the confetti bag and the hundred-fold arms, although all of these I intend to apply to Olivia, so we won't worry about them too much. In Paper Jam, he gains a flutter jump and can make copies of himself, while also taking part in trio attacks with the brothers that make use of his paper qualities. This includes turning into a paper airplane and gliding with them, and attaching to the both of them, Chinese finger-cuff style, and then grabbing something across a gap. Not too much to specifically worry about, but it's good to go over them.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Mega Hammer

Side B: Companions

Up B: Mega Jump

Down B: Flip

Final Smash: Companion Rush
Probably Companion Rush is best here. All of the others can or have been worked in other ways.

Entrance: Popping out of his own Smash letter would probably be really awesome.

Taunt: Turning into a paper boat, waving to the audience for audience points, flipping through his own book. And of course, a secret taunt in the form of Goombario and Goombella tattling on the opponent.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover Yoshi!

7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover Luigi's archnemesis, King Boo! He doesn't appear much in this series, except for one major fight in Paper Jam, as well as a Papercraft Battle as well. During his boss battle, he summons spirit fire, shapeshifts, turns invisible, sucks you in, and creates duplicates of himself. Not particularly stuff we see often from him, but all definitely falling within his ghostly purview. And if they don't fit into his special moves, they can all feature in his other moves.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Crown Laser

Side B: Tongue Slap
Although I imagine his tongue will be used a lot in his standards and smashes, so if you wanted to incorporate the spirit fire or suction here, you could.

Up B: Belly Bash

Down B: Energy Gate

Final Smash: Painting

Entrance: Emerging from his painting portal

Taunts: His evil laugh he always does, admiring a portrait of one of the Portrait ghosts maybe, tossing around a piece of the Dark Moon. Heck, maybe Hellen Gravely could pop up and fawn over him.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we move on from the standard Mario roster to cover Paper Mario.

10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover the Mario series' favorite boss character, Petey Piranha. The big boy appears in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam in both his regular and paper variants. His battle consists of a lot of his basic moves, like flying and divebombing, spewing sludge, and so on, but also throws in a few new things, like sucking people in, and burrowing in the ground.

Here is his moveset:

Standard B: Piranhabon
Or simply sludge

Side B: Tornado

Up B: Fly

Down B: Divebomb

Final Smash: Emissary Cage Match

Entrance: He will wake up from a nap.

Taunts: His roar, maybe with a bit of a stunning effect. His belly button poking out and his rolling over on the floor. Napping, maybe.

Next up: Let's cover King Boo!

28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover the Wiggler species. As is relatively common now, the Wigglers play notable roles in several games, generally having been ticked off in some way and the Mario brothers having to calm them down and then gain their help to get through an area. This type of plot appears in Dream Team, Paper Jam, and kind of in Bowser's Inside Story. Not really much new to say, as the Wigglers in question do a lot of what we expect of them anyway, although I did take notice of a ground pound they liked to do to make shockwaves occur this time.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Panel

Side B: Charge

Up B: Flutter

Down B: Earthquake
I guess I already covered that part. Ah well.

Final Smash: Mechawiggler

Entrance: waking up from sleep.

Taunts: Bouncing a ball on his nose, rolling his body segments here and there.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover the Chain Chomps.

17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today we cover Chargin' Chuck. Not much to say here. A squad of them appear as a miniboss in Paper Jam, but that's about it, and once again, instead of using all the sports stuff appearing throughout their first appearance, they're all once again boiled down to the most iconic move and that's it.

Here's the moveset:

Standard B: Baseball Pitch

Side B: Charge

Up B: Jump and Clap

Down B: Dig

Final Smash: Team Blitz

Entrance: He will charge through a block

Taunts: You could probably pull a few from actual football and other sports. Like a war dance, or a huddle, or the lineup position, and so on.

Next up: Let's cover Wiggler!

Character Sheet: Boo (Revision)

 BOO

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Strangely, Boos don't really appear all that much in this run of games. I suppose it's not that weird. Outside of Paper Jam, the Mario & Luigi games tended to populate themselves with their own unique enemies each time based on the concept behind the game. As such, Boos don't have too much to offer here.

Here is the moveset:

Standard B: Obake Candlestick

Side B: Bomb Boo

Up B: Boo String

Down B: Vanish

Final Smash: Boolossus

Entrance: Appears out of nowhere

Taunts: Just the basic cover-your-face animation. That screech of theirs needs to be included too. When they flash and show off a blue coin for sure. Maybe Bow's haughty laugh behind her fan.

Next up: Let's cover the Cheep Cheeps!

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Revision)

 DRY BONES

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Not much to say here. Dry Bones appear, as you'd expect, and mostly act as they always do. What more can I say?

Here is the character's moveset:

Standard B: Bone Throw

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Shell Cage

Final Smash: Zombie Horde

Entrance: Starting out as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Falling apart and coming together, tossing his head around, so on.

Next up: Let's cover the Goombas!

Character Sheet: The Koopalings (Revision)

 THE KOOPALINGS

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

This should be pretty short and sweet. The Koopalings appear only once in this run of games, as bosses in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (because they probably weren't allowed to use unique characters any more, but, hey, that's just a theory). They worked in teams, but mostly had a lot of their basic attacks that you normally see them using. For instance, they spin, stomp, create multiples of themselves, breath fire, spin in their shells, pop around through pipes, and throw rings. They also had a big old time bomb, but no matter.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Magic Ring

Side B: Bullet Bill Blaster

Up B: Bouncy Ball

Down B: Giant Hammer

Final Smash: Airships

Entrance: The whole Koopaling crew will descend in their giant Klown Kar, and the one selected by the player will hop off onto the stage.

Taunts: Varies depending on the Koopaling.

Next up: Let's cover the Koopa Troopas. I don't think they'll offer up much new.

Character Sheet: Bowser Jr. (Revision)

 BOWSER JR.

5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.

13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover Bowser's kid, Bowser Jr. The little tyke appears exactly twice in this run of games (certain remake expansions not withstanding), as one of the temporary members of your team in Origami King, and as a secondary villain, alongside his paper version in Paper Jam. Honestly, with these two games, the kid is the most likeable he's ever been.

There's not a whole lot to cover here. In Origami King, he only has a basic attack much like the rest of your "companions" in game. In Paper Jam though, he and his paper self antagonize you a few times, resulting in a couple battles. Across all of this, he flies around in his Klown Kar as usual, throws spike balls and bob-ombs, breathes fire, tickles you with a paintbrush (hmm, that's not a reference I've seen in a while), throws paper airplane, and utilizes a giant bomb.

Let's see how it all changes up!

Standard B: Cannonball

Side B: Bomb Throw
Can't use Mechakoopa either anymore. Hmm . . .

Up B: Eject

Down B: Transform

Final Smash: Mechabowser

Entrance: He could float down in the Klown Kar.

Taunts: His famous snicker has to be involved somehow. Maybe hopping out and painting in the air with his paintbrush. His tendency to put his hand over his eyes and look around. So on.

Next up: Let's cover his siblings and/or his dad's generals, the Koopalings!

 BOWSER

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. 3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover Bowser, who had a pretty sizeable role in pretty much every game here, acting as a secondary antagonist, ally, and even playable protagonist in Bowser's Inside Story. You fight him several times across the games, not least because the Mario & Luigi games felt the need to end on a Bowser battle whether or not he was the main villain of the game.

A lot of it is pretty basic Bowser stuff, like breathing fire, stomping, throwing hammers, spinning in his shell, causing shockwaves, punching, body slamming, charging, grabbing, throwing bombs, and flying around in his Koopa Klown Kar, but several other things are more specific to each game. In Origami King, he spends most of the game folded up into a square, but he still helps where he can. In his Bowser's Inside Story moveset, he can suck things in, roll around as a spike ball, and use his minions for various attacks. His final battle in each is a sort of super form, with Cackletta and Princess Shroob possessing him in the first two, the Dark Star mimicking him in the third, gaining a Dreamy Form in Dream Team, and wearing his paper counterpart as a suit of armor in Paper Jam.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Fire Breath
Can't do without it.

Side B: Boulder
Although rolling around in a ball like he did in Inside Story would be pretty cool.

Up B: Shell Spin

Down B: Slam Down
Standard shockwave thing. Still should have a shifter to Dry Bowser though for consistency.

Final Smash: Giant Bowser
Maybe we can shake it up and have some of these other giant forms show up now and then.

Entrance: Bowser will land in his Koopa Klown Kar.

Taunts: His evil laugh from Super Mario 64, many of his taunts from Odyssey and other games, holding up a captive something or other, the list goes on.

Next up: Let's cover Dry Bowser real quick!

Character Sheet: Toadette (Revision)

 TOADETTE

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Today, let's cover Toadette. She appears precisely once in this run of games, in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, as a supporting character and builder of the Papercrafts. That said, I remain thoroughly convinced she took over the role originally intended for Kylie Koopa, as most of her behavior and mannerisms in the game are far more reminiscent of Kylie's and seem a bit out of character for Toadette herself. However, one thing we do have to talk about is the fact that Captain Toad has gained enough through Professor Toad to warrant his own moveset, and Toadette will make the jump from being Toad's echo to Captain Toad's. So . . . consider this the debut of Captain Toad's moveset, I guess.

Here's her moveset:

Standard B: Flashbulb

This one is based on hers and Captain Toad's helmets ability to stun and kill Boos using the flashlight on top. Toadette will put on her helmet and it will glow brightly, doing damage to those in the vicinity

Side B: Pickaxe

This is based on the Pickaxe item appearing in the game, a powerful weapon that acts similarly to the hammer in Smash. They will pull it out and swing it up and down while moving forward for a short period.

Up B: Fan

This is based on the fans that appear in Treasure Tracker and elsewhere that require you to blow into the mike and blow them upward. A fan will appear below their feet and send them flying upward.

Down B: Dig Up

This one is based on Professor Toad's in combat ability. Since they also follow the explorer theme, it fits well for them to inherit it. Both will dig into the ground with a shovel. Captain Toad will unearth coins that will hit anyone nearby, but Toadette will have the chance to dig up a Peach Crown, thus allowing her to transform into Peachette.

Final Smash: Papercraft

This will not be Captain Toad's final smash. A group of Toads will bring in one of the Papercrafts she built throughout the game and carry it around, using it to smack its hammer and throw fireballs around the stage.

Entrance: Stepping out of a cave with the Toad Brigade theme playing

Taunts: Waving and winking, tucking her hands together under her chin the way she does, maybe she could even inherit Kylie's big thumbs up thing.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover the big bad bruiser, Bowser himself.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

 MARIO & LUIGI: PAPER JAM

So, there's this thing going around lately, this interview with the director of Origami King, where he strongly implies that sometime following the release of Super Paper Mario, the Paper Mario development team were not allowed to make original characters any more and had to stick pretty much entirely to the core Mario cast and enemies, which we can very clearly see the effects of in all three games following in the series. Even in Origami King, where the writing and characters were strong, it's rather telling that one of the most interesting characters was only really named "Bob-Omb." Considering all this would have been roughly post-Dream Team, I think it's fair to say that had its effects on the Mario & Luigi series as well. (Though, to AlphaDream's credit, at least they still made a good game of it regardless).

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam acts as a crossover of sorts between the Mario & Luigi series and the Paper Mario series, with the plot involving Luigi accidentally opening a magic book and releasing paper versions of all the characters in the Mushroom Kingdom, leading the brothers to team up with Mario's paper self in order to put all the pages back together and return the paper characters to their own world.

The game's main playable characters are Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario all working together as a threesome. Together, they can run, jump, dash, and whack with their hammers. Paper Mario can also flutter jump, stack up several copies of himself, and turn into a paper airplane. Working together outside of battle, they can perform a number of trio moves, such as smacking all three hammers together to make a powerful shockwave, drill into the ground, fly across pits with Paper Mario in his airplane form, and form a rope to reach out and grab stuff. In battle, Mario can kick around a red shell, fire off on a rocket, throw a bunch of bombs, swing around a cannonball, and run along a trail of Toads. Luigi can use a fire flower, use a shell to drill into enemies, use the dropchopper, blow up a balloon, and grow giant to whack with a hammer. All three together have a set of moves including turning the enemies to stickers and lobbing tennis balls at them?, turning the enemy into a kite?, dropping from a high distance and hitting all the enemies on the way down, throw shurikens at the enemy, and launching a meteor at them.

I should also mention the Papercraft battles, a new form of minigame I suppose, wherein Toadette (clearly possessed by the spirit of Kylie Koopa in her mannerisms) puts together giant blocky versions of the characters to do battle with giant blocky versions of enemy characters, while our heroes ride on top. It's fun . . . I guess. The heroes' Papercrafts include a basic one for Mario, a hammer-wielding Luigi, one for Peach with a floaty parasol, an egg-throwing Yoshi, and a fireball-throwing Fire Mario. Their opponents respectively include a basic Goomba, a Kamek that shields, teleports, and casts spells, a Bowser Jr. that throws shells, drops bombs, and uses a punching glove, a King Boo that tends to float, and a fire-breathing Bowser.

Our heroes are once again joined by Starlow, once again in a mostly exposition role and once again being a dick to Luigi. We also have both Peach and Paper Peach, a number of Toads and Paper Toads, Toadette on Papercraft construction, and a few Yoshis here and there. Next, we have Nabbit, doing mostly as Nabbit does, but maybe just maybe inheriting the spirit of Popple (honestly, I would bet money that Kylie and Popple were originally intended to fill the roles of Toadette and Nabbit before all the crap went down). He will steal things, run away, toss spike balls to block pursuers' paths, burrow, create duplicates, hop on clouds, throw out coins and enemies, spin and throw his bag, sneak up on people, sleep, give healing items to the heroes, steal one of the brother's hammers and use it, and kick around a Buzzy Beetle shell. Well, thank you, Nabbit for providing for yourself such a nice and easy moveset. Good bunny.

Our villains include both regular and paper forms of our standard Mario enemies, including Bowser, Kamek, and Bowser Jr. Regular Bowser will breathe fire, ride around in his Klown Kar, throw bombs, jump around and stomp. Paper Bowser also breathes fire and has a Klown Kar, but can also form a suit of armor around Bowser for the big special Bowser battle at the end. (At least they are the main villain this time). Additionally, Dry Bowser appears in the game's battle ring and will breathe fire, throw bones, and throw his own head at you.

Bowser Jr. and his paper form have a genuinely kinda sweet friendship in this game, and both will ride around in Klown Kars and breathe fire. Additionally, Paper Bowser Jr. can turn into a paper airplane and regular Jr. sets up a giant bomb. The Kameks will both fly around on brooms, summon up new paper terrain with Magic, create force fields, teleport, cast spells, create portals, and summon magic barriers. All seven Koopalings appear in this game, although act in separate groups for most of it. Roy and Wendy (the pink team) will throw giant boulders and cannonballs and throw rings. Ludwig and Larry (the blue team) will both spin in their shells, throw giant bombs, and cast spells. And Lemmy, Iggy, and Morton (the . . . um, yellow, green, and brown team, I guess), will do their regular thing of riding around on balls, using Chain Chomps, and throwing cannonballs.

Our bosses outside of these include a few Mario favorites. They include a regular and paper version of Petey Piranha, who will bite, fly, stomp, burrow underground, spew out sludge, suck in, and cause shockwaves; King Boo, who will spit out spirit fire, shapeshift, suck things in, split into multiples, and disappear; King Bob-Omb, who throws Bob-Ombs, grabs you, and fires cannons (hey, buddy, just in time for a certain Mario Kart game to make me reconsider you as more than just part of the regular Bob-Omb moveset. Good for you!); a rampaging Wiggler who stomps, charges, rolls around on a ball, spits seeds, and grows wings; and a pair of giant Pokeys who will roll up into a wheel, lie down on the ground and roll like a bar, fling their body parts, and rise from the ground.

Our recurring enemies (mostly all regular Mario enemies) come in both paper and regular varieties. They include: Goombas, Scaredy Rats, Koopas, Biddybuds, Spinies, Sandmaarghs, Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs, Chargin' Chucks, Hammer Bros., Cheep Cheeps, Urchins, Monty Moles, Ninji (who multiply, hide behind fake walls, spin down from the ceiling, throw themselves as shurikens, and basically use substitution jutsu (man, we are getting everybody in today, aren't we?)), Piranha Plants, Buzzy Beetles, Bullies, Spikes, Pokeys, Fire Bros., Ant Troopers, Swoops, Boomerang Bros., Dry Bones, Boos, Broozers, Chain Chomps, and Mechakoopas (who breathe fire and give off electricity).

Our stages this time include Princess Peach's Castle of course, a pretty standard grassland called Sunbeam Plains, the desert Doop Doop Dunes, a beach area called Twinsy Tropics, a forest called Gloomy Woods, an icy mountain named Mount Brrr, and Bowser's Castle, later becoming Neo Bowser's Castle. Pretty basic, all things considered. But let's be honest here. The real stage to include for this game is the Papercraft Battles, with the various papercrafts acting as our platforms.

The items are pretty much standard at this point, though we do now have some paper items like Blocks to give Paper Mario more copies to stack up and Battle Cards. You know, like from Color Splash.
