Dry Bones

Working your way through this new Mario adventure, you will have encountered many familiar faces from previous games and you will have taken them out with your arsenal of new abilities. Then you come to a fortress smack-dab in the middle of the first world. Inside, you find the grisly sight of skeletal, undead Koopa Troopas. When you jump on top of them, they don’t tuck into their shells like regular Koopas. Instead they fall apart before rising back to life mere seconds later.

These are the Dry Bones, a new breed of Koopa Troopa with a more sinister bent. Since their introduction, their popularity has skyrocketed, earning them playable appearance across multitudes of sports games, all starting with Mario Kart DS. Although mostly similar in ability to Koopas, their creepy resilience and tendency to throw their own bones keep them just unique enough to warrant their own slot.

In game, they will be a bit heavier and slower than regular Koopas, with even higher defense than they already had. As an echo fighter of the Koopa Troopa, their moves will mostly mirror those, but with a bonier bent, including its own unique bone toss move.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE

In what may be the most successful port on this list, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released on the switch, bringing with it every character and stage that appeared in the original game, including the DLC. On top of that, we also saw the addition of Bowser Jr. (who honestly should have been in the original, if anyone), King Boo, Dry Bones, and the Inkling Boy and Girl as guest stars. Another massive change was that they apparently learned from the mistake of just using tracks as battle courses, and included real battle courses. These included Battle Stadium, a high-tech battle course; Sweet Sweet Kingdom, a candy level; Dragon Palace, a Chinese-dragon themed battle level; Lunar Colony, based on Mario Galaxy; Wuhu Town; Luigi's Mansion; Battle Course 1 from the first Super Mario Kart; and Urchin Underpass, based on Splatoon.

Mario Party 8

MARIO PARTY 8

Here's where we start to mix things up a bit. Mario Party 8's roster all returns, exactly as they stood in the previous game, but this time with Hammer Bro and Blooper added in. The plot of the game is built around a special Star Carnival coming to town, hosted by the magical imp MC Ballyhoo and his talking hat Big Top. Bowser ends up stealing the Star Rod that acts as the final reward, and you then have to fight him for it. You know, pretty standard.

The spaces in this game are now big pavement blocks of various color instead of the little buttons from before, but they still serve the same functions, with blue, red, event, duel, challenge, Bowser, and DK spaces, alongside the new Lucky space that takes you to a special Lucky Area where every space is a blue space and a free star. Items and capsules this time are traded out with special magic candies. Red candies affect the dice block, including adding a second and third block and slowing the roll. Green candies transform the player for a single action, allowing them to spring to new areas, lets you zap opponents and make them lose coins, and turn you into a vampire to take others' coins. Yellow candies transform the player for a full turn, turning them into an 8-bit version, a tornado that blows opponents back to start, a trio of tiny clones, and a ball. Blue candies are more offense-oriented, turning them into a stone block to run through opponents, a Bullet Bill, Bowser, and a fiery version that automatically gets into duels. I think we can feel comfortable in saying what a moveset for Ballyhoo would pull from.

Our stages include: DK's Treetop Temple, a Donkey Kong-themed stage; Goomba's Booty Boardwalk, a beach stage; King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, a haunted house level; Shy Guy's Perplex Express, set on a train; Koopa's Tycoon Town, very Monopoly-inspired; and Bowser's Warped Orbit, set on a space station orbiting a sun. Outside of that, we have the carnival and the various tents within.

We have 73 minigames here this time, featuring our characters doing: graffiti, playing baseball, punching a statue, water skiing, raising a flag, cleaning a Chomp, driving karts, steering a leaf, platforming, shaking soda, setting a clock, driving a scooter, protecting an Ukiki, snowboarding, walking a tightrope, catching coins, dropping bombs, flying a plane, shooting snow, jumping rope, playing football, playing bumper cars, rowing, shooting paint, decorating a cake, playing King on the Mountain, shooting Boos, stealing plants, shooting cards, flying a flying saucer, getting a boat's attention, swinging a lasso, driving a minecart, slaloming in a space station, shooting lava, building things, balancing on a ball, blowing up King Bob-Omb, running around a Mr. I, shooting basketballs, snipping a rope to not get flung by a catapult (my favorite), trying to stay on an iceberg, stamping, and fighting Bowser.

That's about it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Gimmick Rep: play music, fight in a giant bubble, run on a conveyor belt, run up a tower, collect coins, snowboard, make a picture, look for ghosts, collect honey, shoot targets, smack Pokeys with a hammer, zap opponents, drive karts, pop a balloon, stop a clock, throw darts, do math, avoid bombs, spray water, shoot balloons, avoid a spinner, drive tanks, use a flashlight, use a slot machine, use a pickaxe, bounce on a pogo stick, run on a wheel, box with a giant robot, avoid a shark, avoid Bullet Bills, fly a bug, ground pound, work through a maze, play cards, pull crops, hop around, fly, roll a ball, shoot Piranha Plants, match puzzle pieces, shoot Piders, fly helicopters, avoid getting smacked by Monty Mole, get through a maze of pipes, drive a boat, avoid Cheep Cheeps, squash Goombas, run from Ukikis, jump across platforms, make smoothies, row a kayak, jump rope, throw hammers, ride rocking horses, fix pipes, play hot potato with a bomb, jump over barrels, climb vines, slide down a slide, collect bananas, roll on barrels, avoid Mechakoopas, open treasure chests, climb a wall, play air hockey, fight Bowser, capsule, spacesgraffiti, playing baseball, punching a statue, water skiing, raising a flag, cleaning a Chomp, driving karts, steering a leaf, platforming, shaking soda, setting a clock, driving a scooter, protecting an Ukiki, snowboarding, walking a tightrope, catching coins, dropping bombs, flying a plane, shooting snow, jumping rope, playing football, playing bumper cars, rowing, shooting paint, decorating a cake, playing King on the Mountain, shooting Boos, stealing plants, shooting cards, flying a flying saucer, getting a boat's attention, swinging a lasso, driving a minecart, slaloming in a space station, shooting lava, building things, balancing on a ball, blowing up King Bob-Omb, running around a Mr. I, shooting basketballs, snipping a rope to not get flung by a catapult (my favorite), trying to stay on an iceberg, stamping, and fighting Bowser.

Mario Party 7

MARIO PARTY 7

Alright, Mario Party 7, let's do this! Mario Party 7 follows the previous trend in the series by having every odd-numbered game shake up the roster a bit. This time around, our original five Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Wario all return, as well as Daisy and Waluigi from numbers 3 and 4, and Toad, Boo, and Toadette from 5 on 6. Koopa Kid sadly does not return, shifting over to a board space like Donkey Kong before him. I'm also fairly certain this is the last time we will ever see the character. (Barring any handhelds that came prior. I mean real world chronologically, not "this blog" chronologically). Birdo and Dry Bones are added in as brand-new characters, giving everyone in the game a go-to partner. The game takes place on a cruise ship hosted by Toadsworth, who takes you to various islands to partake in the games.

Our red, blue, event, duel, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and character spaces all return, alongside a Mic space for mic minigames and a Koopa Kid space where Koopa Kid will challenge you to a game. The Orbs return as items, with Mushrooms, Super Mushrooms, Slow Shrooms, Metal Shrooms, Flutter, cannons, Lakitu, bones, Hammer Bros, Piranha Plants, Kamek, Toadies, Mr. Blizzard, Spinies, Amps, Tweesters, Thwomps, Warp Pipes, and Bob-Ombs all returning, alongside Spear Guys who take money, Bandits who steal from a windmill (?), and Pink Boos who steal stars. There are also character-specific orbs for each of the partner pairs. Mario and Luigi throw fireballs, Peach and Daisy will use a flower to avoid traps, Yoshi and Birdo will turn obstacles in their path into eggs, Wario and Waluigi will use a vacuum to suck up coins from other players, Boo and Dry Bones will use a magic wand to turn invisible, and Toad and Toadette will use three mushrooms. A Koopa Kid orb will cause more Koopa Kid spaces to appear.

Our stages this time, besides the MSS Sea Star you'd be traveling around on, include: Grand Canal, an oceanside level; Pagoda Peak, a mountainous, stereotypically Chinese-themed stage; Pyramid Park, a desert level; Neon Heights, a futuristic sci-fi stage; Windmillville, a picturesque Yoshi's Island type of stage; and Bowser's Enchanted Inferno. You get that one.

Across Mario Party 7's 88 minigames, we see our heroes: play music, fight in a giant bubble, run on a conveyor belt, run up a tower, collect coins, snowboard, make a picture, look for ghosts, collect honey, shoot targets, smack Pokeys with a hammer, zap opponents, drive karts, pop a balloon, stop a clock, throw darts, do math, avoid bombs, spray water, shoot balloons, avoid a spinner, drive tanks, use a flashlight, use a slot machine, use a pickaxe, bounce on a pogo stick, run on a wheel, box with a giant robot, avoid a shark, avoid Bullet Bills, fly a bug, ground pound, work through a maze, play cards, pull crops, hop around, fly, roll a ball, shoot Piranha Plants, match puzzle pieces, shoot Piders, fly helicopters, avoid getting smacked by Monty Mole, get through a maze of pipes, drive a boat, avoid Cheep Cheeps, squash Goombas, run from Ukikis, jump across platforms, make smoothies, row a kayak, jump rope, throw hammers, ride rocking horses, fix pipes, play hot potato with a bomb, jump over barrels, climb vines, slide down a slide, collect bananas, roll on barrels, avoid Mechakoopas, open treasure chests, climb a wall, play air hockey, and fight Bowser.

That should be about it! Here's all we've got so far:

Mario Kart DS

 MARIO KART DS

Today, let's cover Mario Kart DS for the, well, Nintendo DS naturally. The game returns to the basic one-driver concept, but most everything else sticks pretty close to the standards set by 64 and Double Dash. If you asked my opinion, it is probably the best of the main handheld games for many different reasons that we'll likely at least touch on here.

For our character roster, we cut down to just the main eight once again as our base roster, but with Daisy, Waluigi, newcomer Dry Bones, and special guest ROB added in as unlockable characters. We also have a playable Shy Guy, although that one's a little weird. You can't access the character on the character select, but if you connect wirelessly with someone who has the game, but you don't, you will be defaulted to Shy Guy. Neat. I guess. Most items that return remain much the same as seen before, with lots of mushrooms, shells, bananas, and so on, but we do have two new items: the Bullet Bill, which transforms you into a bullet bill and rockets you along the track; and the Blooper, which squirts your opponents' screens with ink, reducing their visibility.

Now, this game has a very unique and distinct feature that requires I talk about our supporting characters. First up, obviously Lakitu returns as the ref, and the Angry Sun, Boos, Bubbas, Bullet Bills, Chain Chomps, Cheep Cheeps, Piranha Plants, Fire Snakes, Goombas, Monty Moles, Moo Moos, Piantas, Pokeys, Rocky Wrenches, Sidesteppers, Mr. Blizzards, Swoops, and Thwomps all appear as obstacles or in the background, but we also get a single-player mission mode that features several boss battles against familiar faces from Super Mario 64 DS specifically. These include Big Bully, who rams into you; Eyerok, who flies around and slams its fist down; Goomboss, who will race you while tossing out obstacles to get in your way; King Boo, who will turn invisible and steal your coins; King Bob-Omb, who will stomp around and throw Bob-Ombs; Chief Chilly, who will charge at you; and Wiggler, who will race you.

As for our standard sixteen tracks, we have: Figure-8 Circuit, the standard generic track; Yoshi Falls, a circular track with waterfalls running over it; Cheep Cheep Beach, a beach level; Luigi's Mansion, based on Luigi's Mansion; Desert Hills, a desert level; Delfino Square, based on Super Mario Sunshine; Waluigi Pinball, the BEST Mario Kart track; Shroom Ridge, a mountainous track with high cliffs on one side; DK Pass, a snow level; Tick Tock Clock, a course built inside a giant clock; Mario Circuit, a standard track around Peach's Castle; Airship Fortress, an awesome track that takes you through a scene of an airship bombarding a castle; Wario Stadium, another standard motocross arena; Peach Gardens, that take you through the garden in front of Peach's Castle; this game's rendition of Bowser's Castle, and this game's rendition of Rainbow Road. We also have sixteen more tracks for the retro cup, which are all recreations of tracks from previous games. As we've seen all those already, I won't go into them again.

Our battle tracks include: Nintendo DS, following after the last game's Game Cube track; Twilight House, a sprawling spooky maze with lots of rooms; Palm Shore, a beach level; and Tart Top, set on top of a giant tart. Block Fort and Pipe Maze also return from previous games. I believe that's it.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Mario Kart: drive, brake, jump, turn, skid, etc., Banana Peel, Green Shell, Red Shell, Feather, Mushroom, Star, Ghost, Coin, Lightning, Egg, Fireball, Poison Mushroom, Triple Mushroom, Super Mushroom, Fake Item, Banana Bunch, Triple Green Shells, Triple Red Shells, Spiny Shell, dual driver, Blooper, Bob-Omb, Bullet Bill

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Revision)

 DRY BONES

This will largely be our last run of revisions, for the Mario series at least. Now that the RPGs are over, pretty much every game left is either something we've already covered for the most part (Remakes, etc.), or run on a core game mechanic not unique to any one character (the Sports games). So, once these are done, I will do character sheets for new characters added and just a general sum up for everyone else. With all that said, let's get into it:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Professor E. Gadd
4. Princess Peach
5. Toad
6. Toadette
7. Bowser
8. Dry Bowser
9. Bowser Jr.
10. Koopalings
11. Koopa Troopa
12. Dry Bones
13. Goomba
14. Piranha Plant
15. Boo
16. Cheep Cheep
17. Blooper
18. Bob-Omb
19. Lakitu
20. Monty Mole
21. Spike
22. Hammer Bro
23. Chargin' Chuck
24. Wiggler
25. Chain Chomp
26. Birdo
27. Petey Piranha
28. King Boo
29. Paper Mario
30. Yoshi
31. Baby Mario
32. Baby Bowser
33. Kamek
34. Shy Guy

Not much to say here. Dry Bones appear, as you'd expect, and mostly act as they always do. What more can I say?

Here is the character's moveset:

Standard B: Bone Throw

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Shell Cage

Final Smash: Zombie Horde

Entrance: Starting out as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Falling apart and coming together, tossing his head around, so on.

Next up: Let's cover the Goombas!

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Paper Mario+)

DRY BONES

Today, let's let the floodgates burst forth. The RPGs, being RPGs, have proved a wellspring of brand-new characters and possible major revisions of pre-existing characters. Since there are so many, I will start by covering all of the revisions first. Here they are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Bowser Jr.
7. The Koopalings
8. Koopa Troopa
8e. Dry Bones
9. Goomba
10. Piranha Plant
11. Boo
12. Blooper
13. Lakitu and Spinies
14. Monty Mole
15. Hammer Bro
16. Wiggler
17. Chain Chomp
18. Birdo
19. Petey Piranha
20. Yoshi
21. Kamek
22. Shy Guy
23. Bandit

Today, let's cover the Dry Bones enemy. Not much to say here. They appear in most of the Paper Mario games, acting much as they normally do. The one major thing of note is that, as an echo of the Koopa Troopas, they will inherit some of the updated moves that came with your Koopa companions like Koops and Kooper.

Here is the character's moveset:

Standard B: Bone Throw

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Shell Cage
Same, but made of bones basically.

Final Smash: Zombie Horde
This one's more based on scenes like Hooktail castle, when a bunch of Dry Bones come to life and swarm you.

Entrance: Starting out as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Falling apart and coming together, tossing his head around, so on.

Next up: Let's cover Goombella and Goombario, our Goomba reps!

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Side Character Spinoffs)

DRY BONES

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Today's pretty simple too. Dry Bones appeared in Super Princess Peach, acting much as they always do. That's about it!

Here is the character's moveset:

Standard B: Bone Throw

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Fall Apart

Final Smash: Bone Mech

Entrance: Starts out as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Rattling, tossing around his head, so on.

Next up: Let's cover the goombas!

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (New Series)

DRY BONES

Settle in, folks, we've got a lot of revisions to get through for this one. The "New" series featured most of the series favorites, almost all of which have been included here already and most of them brought at least something new to the table. In fact, we only have four new characters to include this time. They are:

1. Mario (Revision 4)
2. Luigi (Revision 3)
3. Koopa Troopa (Revision 3)
3e. Dry Bones (Revision 2)
4. Goomba (Revision 3)
5. Piranha Plant (Revision 3)
6. Boo (Revision 3)
8. Princess Peach (Revision 2)
9. Toad (Revision 2)
10. Yoshi (Revision 2)
11. Bowser (Revision 2)
13. Lakitu & Spinies (Revision 2)
14. Hammer Bro (Revision 2)
15. Chargin' Chuck (Revision 2)
16. Kamek (Name change, Revision 2)
20. The Koopalings (Revision 1)
22. Boom Boom (Revision 1)
25. Rosalina & Luma (Revision 1)
27. Bowser Jr. (Revision 1)
30. Blooper (Revision 1)
31. Monty Mole (Revision 1)
33. Petey Piranha (Revision 1)
11e. Dry Bowser
22e. Pom Pom
39. Fursuit Mario
40. Sprixie Princess

Today, let's talk about Dry Bones. Dry Bones, as mentioned in the Koopa Troopa post, comes with an already nearly perfected moveset, even having one more perfect move than Koopa does in its bone throw. However, with Dry Bowser now added as an echo fighter to Bowser, I find myself in a bit of a predicament as Dry Bowser had been the perfect Final Smash for Dry Bones. Now, it's possible that I could simply undo this, leave Dry Bowser as Dry Bones' final smash, or as a mere color swap of Bowser, but at the same time, I know Dry Bowser is quite popular on his own in the same way King Boo and Petey Piranha are. So, perhaps I had best search around for alternative Final Smashes. Hmm . . .

I think I've got it:

Standard B: Bone Throw

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Fall Apart

Final Smash: Mattermouth
I suppose there are things such as Bonetail and Bone Dragons, and I'll consider them as I come to them, but for today, I think I'll make good use of the Mattermouth enemy. The Mattermouths appeared in Super Mario Galaxy as Dry Bone heads that moved along the floor eating the very matter they crossed. In game, a series of Mattermouths will appear, crisscrossing the stage and eating literally everything in their path, insta-killing any opponents in their path, but also leaving behind temporary holes in the stage as well.

Entrance: Starts out in pieces before reassembling

Taunts: Giving a thumbs up and making the iconic Dry Bones rattling sound, one arm dropping off for a second, etc.

Next up: Let's go over the Mario series' most simplistic, yet oddly versatile, enemies: the Goomba!

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Main 3D Games)

DRY BONES

Now that we're done with all of the major 3D Mario titles, I think we need to now go through and update our characters, starting with revisions for any characters included so far that appeared in any of these games. Out of the 24 so far, 17 need revision:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
6. Pauline
7. Princess Toadstool
8. Toad
9. Yoshi
10. Bowser
13. Koopa Troopa
13e. Dry Bones
14. Shy Guy
15. Goomba
16. Piranha Plant
17. Boo
18. Lakitu
19. Hammer Bro
20. Chargin' Chuck
21. Magikoopa

Today is Dry Bones. Really nothing changed here. Dry Bones appears in the Galaxy games and Odyssey, and the only things added was the ability to fly with wings (something that already existed as an echo of Koopa Troopa), and a strange cousin of theirs that seemed to literally eat matter and erase it from existence. As I'm not sure how to effectively work that into a Smash moveset, we really don't have any major changes to consider.

So, here's the moveset as it remains from before:

Standard B: Bone Throw
Does he still count as an echo if Koopa's standard B is different now?

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Para Bones

Down B: Fall Apart

Final Smash: Dry Bowser

Entrance: Starts out in pieces before reassembling

Taunts: Giving a thumbs up and making the iconic Dry Bones rattling sound, one arm dropping off for a second, etc.

Next up: Let's cover the Shy Guys, who don't strictly appear themselves, but gain a couple of offshoots in Super Mario 64 to consider.

Character Sheet: Dry Bones (Original Sidescrollers)

DRY BONES

Now that we have all of the original sidescrolling Mario titles for the NES and SNES under our belt, I think it's time we go through and evaluate every character we have picked so far as being playable.

Now let's move on to the enemy characters. I have narrowed down the field to all of the enemies that have an immediate yes, even if they might not have a moveset just yet. My final count is twelve:

1. Koopa Troopa
1e. Dry Bones
2. Shy Guy
3. Goomba
4. Piranha Plant
5. Boo
6. Lakitu
7. Hammer Bro.
8. Chargin' Chuck
9. Magikoopa
10. Boom Boom
11. Birdo

Next up, let's cover Dry Bones, the skeletal undead offshoot of the Koopa Troopa. They appear mostly in Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. They act basically just like Koopas, except that they don't tuck into their shells when stomped on and instead fall to pieces.

I decided to make Dry Bones an echo fighter of Koopa, mainly because, well, that's what he is. I imagine he would be a tad slower but a little lighter, since he has no flesh, you know. He will utilize many of the moves used by Koopa except maybe with a more "bony" theme to them.

Here is the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Bone Throw
This is basically a repeat of Koopa's hammer throw, except the character will throw a bone instead of a hammer. Strangely enough, this move fits the echo fighter more than the original. Like Richter, I guess.

Side B: Shell Spin
Dry Bones will tuck into his shell and spins forward at high speed, functioning much the same as Koopa's move for the same command.

Up B: Para Bones
Dry Bones will sprout a pair of skeletal wings and float upward, allowing him to hop onto opponents' heads and damage them, just like Koopa's corresponding move.

Down B: Fall Apart
This one functions more or less the same as Koopa's shell tuck, making Dry Bones impervious to harm for a time, except that he will fall apart much like in the games instead of tucking into his shell. This also means that he can't be sent spinning the way Koopa can.

Final Smash: Dry Bowser
I had to. I just had to. I know he's not included in the game yet, but there is literally nothing else Dry Bones' final smash could be. Basically the move would function just like Koopa's, except instead of the eight-bit version of Bowser appearing, he'll appear as a skeleton instead, defending his minion in the same way by spitting fire everywhere and jumping up to slam down on the ground, causing an earthquake.

Entrance: Starts out in pieces before reassembling

Taunts: Giving a thumbs up and making the iconic Dry Bones rattling sound, one arm dropping off for a second, etc.

Next up: We will cover the Shy Guys, Super Mario Bros. 2's relative equivalent to the Koopa Troopa as the standard enemy.
