Mario & Luigi: Brothership

MARIO & LUIGI: BROTHERSHIP

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the sixth game in the Mario & Luigi series, and the first game to be made after AlphaDream went under. It stars Mario and Luigi who find themselves in a world of plug-face people (I believe the official term is Concordian) that had been broken apart into multiple floating islands, with the duo having to help travel to all the different island, and link them back together with lighthouses.

A lot of their moves are pretty standard for the Mario & Luigi series, Mario being set to one button, Luigi being set to another, with the two working together for a number of bros. moves in the overworld, including spinning together in order to fly, rolling up into a ball, and shooting fire and ice respectively. In battle, they have jump and hammer moves, as well as a number of powerful finishers, including: red and green shell attacks, Yoshi hatching from an egg, creating a thundercloud, a bomb derby, a jump helmet, slowing down time, firing themselves from cannons, summoning the Great Conductor, and creating a giant tornado. They also have Battle Plugs that give them boosts for their various attacks.

Their most important supporting characters are the Wattanist Connie and the flying not-pig creature Snoutlet. Connie carries a watering can to tend to all the lighthouses in the area, which helps to connect them back to the tree on Shipshape Island. If there was ever a recipient for all gimmick rep-type stuff, it would be these two together.

There are a number of other supporting cast, including the returning Princess Peach and Starlow, as well as Bowser, Bowser Jr., Kamek, the Toads, and Bowser's minions, who all ended up in this world too. Notable Concordians include: the members of IDLE, a band of rambunctious kids who like to go on adventures; Arc, a young sailor who helps you navigate; Willma, Maykit, and Billdit, a mother and her two kids who run the shops for you to upgrade things; the scientist Technikki and her rival Adaphne; the world-renowned groovemaster Dyode and his apprentice Emmit; Romeo and Juliet-style couple Burnadette and Chilliam; Bowser Jr.'s new friend Buddy; and Connie's old mentor Cozette (more on her later). There are also Grampy Turnips who give you hints when you pull them up, and the Great Conductor, a powerful being who summoned Mario and Luigi in the first place.

For most of the game, the main villain is Zokket, who turns out to be Cozette under brainwashing. In this form, he? (I guess he's referred to as he in this form) works to bring about the hatching of Reclusa, the true villain, a powerful dark creature who hates forming bonds with others and wants everyone in the world to be alone like him. In battle, Zokket can throw his pliers like a boomerang, cast lightning, call down thunderbolts, summon whirlwinds, dual-wield swords, and infect others with Glohm, a dark substance that makes people misanthropic. Reclusa, on the other hand, can fly, uses flowers to trap people inside a dream world (Madara Uchiha, much?), hides as a block, shoot ice and fire, transform into a giant tree called Weeping Reclusa, sweep his arms, throw fruit, rain ice on them, fire dark energy orbs, encase himself in a shell, roll, shoot spikes, and clone himself.

Working directly under Zokket is the Extension Corps (Ecks, Ten, and Shun, haha) who act as more of a silly Team Rocket-type trio. Prior to their big final fight, they mostly hide behind other bosses to fight you, but during that last fight: Ecks zips around at high speed to attack you, Ten can fire energy balls and ride a giant one at you, and Shun throws dumbbells at you. They also use their own plugs that drop cannonballs on you, punish you for eating mushrooms, dance and power up, let them perform a big triple attack, and makes them invincible briefly before exploding.

Other bosses include Gorumbla, a big lumbering bully cared for by Willma and led astray by Zokket. He uses his arms as shields, pounds the ground, slide on his belly, swipe with his arms, headbutt, and toss blocks from the sky. Another is Gobblick, a large pitcher plant, who can spit up things and grab with its tentacles, vents playing a role in its battle. Then we have Sharpcask, a giant living barrel who rolls, tosses other barrels, and trips while carrying a crate. Then there's Pipegunk, a living blob of toxic sludge who can fire sludge balls, switch between fire and ice forms, which then let it shoot fireballs and icicles at its enemies.

Our enemies include: Seedles (who can heal themselves), Guardarms (who plow forward), Invisilizards, Parashoots, Soreboars (who charge), Spikelies, Capnaps, Snaptors (who can fly, extend their necks, bite), Drilbies (who dig), Krodes (who toss junk), Zok Troopers (who wear helmets, wield spikes, zap with Zokkarangs, toss rings, fly with jetpacks, combine into Weeping Troopers), Shower Fish, Sharkbones, Foopflies, Iceads, Magmads, Curlups, Bob-Ombs, Palookas (who punch), Piranha Plants, Hammer Bros, Fire Bros, Ice Bros, Spikes, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Milltons, Spinies, Dry Bones, Magikoopas, Shy Guys, Boos, Reclusiffs, Seedlusas, and Doom Blooms.

As for stages, Shipshape Island is your main hub, an island shaped like a boat that you connect all the other islands back to. Notable islands include: Rumbla Island, Raynforst Island, Twistee Island, Florall Island, Desolatt Island, Lottacoins Island, Merrygo Island, Allsand Island, Bulbfish Island, Heatfreeze Island, Slippenglide Island, Skorcheen Island, Offandon Island, Wayaway Island, Fortress Zokket, Conductor Island, Jellyfish Island, the Soli-Tree, and the four Great Lighthouse Islands in each of the four main seas.

I would do the gather-up bit, but I've been going for an hour already writing this, and I know which characters I'm doing. Let's just move on, shall we?

Thanks for reading! Next up, Connie and Snoutlet strengthen their bonds!

Super Mario Party Jamboree

SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE

Welcome back to the Mario franchise. Today, we only have one to go over. Technically, Mario & Luigi Brothership has also come out at the time of writing this, but that was only three days ago, and not nearly enough time to watch a walkthrough of it. I'm going to run through the other games that have come out in the meantime, then give it a week of space. If nothing comes out on the following Monday, then just assume it's going to be saved for post-Pokemon. We'll see how it goes.

As for Super Mario Party Jamboree, it's the newest game in the Mario Party franchise. Kamek is the host, and the game is a pretty standard entry, though with a one-player where you can run around and complete tasks and so on. Your playable characters include: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Rosalina, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Birdo, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Boo, Monty Mole, and Spike, with Pauline and Ninji as newcomers. Lakitu, Boom Boom, and Pom Pom all have cameos.

The stages include Goomba Lagoon, a tropical island; Rainbow Galleria, a mall; Mega Wiggler's Tree Party; a forest level with a giant Wiggler in the middle of it; Roll'em Raceway, a Mario Kart track; and King Bowser's Keep, your standard Bowser level. Western Land and Mario's Rainbow Castle also return from past games.

The game has a bunch of minigames, most of which are in the pretty standard category for Mario Party. As there's no one to give them to as a gimmick character, unless I just wanted to add boosts to Tumble, Koopa Kid, Ballyhoo, or Brighton and Twila, but I think that's not necessary.

Next up, The Legend of Link!

Mario Heroes Roster

MARIO HEROES ROSTER

With the Mario roster gaining fifteen new fighters and shooting up to over one hundred, the need came along to split it into at least two rosters. I ultimately decided to split it into Heroes and Villains, with around forty-two heroes and sixty villains. Here is the Heroes. From this list, who ya mainin'?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE

Today, let’s cover the Super Mario Bros. movie, specifically meaning the 2023 Chris Pratt movie produced by Illumination, not the old 1993 film starring Bob Hoskins. The film came out about a month and a half ago, at the time of his writing, and has since been pretty much killing it at the box office and in audience reception, even if critical reception was initially mixed. The film stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black among others and mostly retells the basic premise of the original game, with Bowser trying to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, which Mario had just recently come to from Brooklyn. The film does swap out Peach for Luigi as the “Damsel in Distress” role, but I do feel that helps Mario build a relationship with Peach in the movie while already having that brotherly relationship with Luigi, which would have been difficult if she’d been in a cage the whole movie.

Right off the bat, we have the double-edged sword of the movie being really accurate to the games this time around, which while being awesome in its own right, kinda means that we can’t really pull a unique version of Mario or the other characters from this one. Best I can say is have a “movie version” color swap on either the standard Mario or Film Mario specifically with this design and Chris Pratt’s voice work replacing the standard Charles Martinet voice bytes for that one. As it stands, most of what we see Mario do in the movie are things we see him do in the games, such as running, jumping, punching, and using such powerups as the Super Mushroom, the Cat Suit, the Tanooki Suit, the Mini Mushroom, and the Starman. He also rides a Kart, throwing a green shell at one point, but that all also falls under the Mario Kart moveset. He also uses some plumbers’ equipment but nowhere to the extent used by Bob Hoskins’ version or the Super Show! version.

Charlie Day’s Luigi is sidelined for much of the movie, but when he is in action, he does most of the same as his brother, even joining him in the use of the Starman at the end. Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach is also pretty standard to Peach’s more action-heavy game appearances, also using such powerups as the Fire Flower and Ice Flower at different points. She does wield a halberd at one point but not through any extended action scenes.

Keegan Michael Key plays Toad, specifically the main red-spotted, blue-vested Toad, at somewhat of a midway point between his original appearance and Captain Toad, being a bit of a wanderer laden down with a backpack and a bunch of camping gear. He wields a frying pan and drives a very large kart, but is otherwise pretty standard to his normal appearances. Same goes for basically every other Toad in the movie, though they are given a significant downgrade in courage and fighting ability (I choose to believe the two guards at the friend of the castle were Buckenberry and Alagold respectively).

The Kongs make a pretty significant appearance throughout the movie, Mario, Peach, and Toad visiting them to request aid. Donkey Kong and his (now) father Cranky are the main to appear, played by Seth Rogan and Fred Armisen respectively. Donkey Kong fights with a bunch of standard DK moves, throwing barrels, punching, slapping, grabbing, flying on a rocketbarrel, and so on. He does use a Fire Flower at one point, which was really cool, but other than that, he’s basically Donkey Kong. Again, great for the viewers, not great for our purposes here. Cranky mostly sits on his throne and acts . . . crankily, but not much else. Other Kongs appearing in the background include Diddy, Dixie, Kiddy, Chunky, and Swanky. There’s also a bouncer Kong who I don’t think is supposed to be Funky, but I’m not totally certain. He drives a kart and tosses a banana peel at one point.

Other minor characters include Mario’s family back home, including a mom, dad, two uncles, an aunt, a cousin, and a grandpa, most of whom do basic NPC stuff. Foreman Spike also makes a notable appearance in the movie played by Sebastian Maniscalco as a rival plumber who bullies the brothers. He grabs and threatens Mario at one point but not much new. There’s also a character named Giuseppe played by Charles Martinet, who almost feels like a confirmed distinct Jumpman, and a Secret Life of Pets extra named Francis owned by a rich couple who tried to bite and claw at the brothers at one point. He also fills the shower to get at them, so there’s that. We also have an army of Penguins, led by a king voiced by Khary Payton, who are shown attacking with snowballs and even a snow catapult. Then there’s Lumalee, voiced by the director’s kid and portrayed as a cheerily nihilistic Luma who has given up on all of existence. Pauline also has a brief cameo, baby versions of Mario, Luigi, and Peach are seen in flashbacks, and Yoshi is teased for the sequel.

On the villain end of things, we have Bowser, played brilliantly well by Jack Black, who leans very heavily into the “Bowser simps for Peach” angle of the character. He is seen breathing fire, clawing, biting, spinning in his shell, and performing an epic piano solo. He is also force-fed a Mini Mushroom at the end of the film. Again, pretty basic Bowser stuff. He is backed up by a nearly unrecognizable Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, who uses his magic to levitate people off the ground, and once uses it to nearly compress Toad to death. I don’t think we’ve ever seen him use his magic specifically in those ways, but other than that, he’s basically Kamek.

One standout is the Koopa General voiced by Scott Menville and portrayed as the origin of the flying blue Spiny Shell. He is seen carrying a spear, drives a kart with giant crushing teeth on the front, from which he can also fire a Bullet Bill. After he is forced to crash by Mario and Donkey Kong, he turns into a kamikaze pilot and, well, blue-shells the both of them.

Across all of Bowser’s army, we see Koopas, Goombas, whatever those things are (Spinies), Shy Guys, Snifits, Swoops, Bramballs, Biddybugs, Dry Bones, King Boo, King Bob-Omb, Bob-Ombs, Bullet Bills, Buzzy Beetles, Chain Chomps, Hammer Bros, Piranha Plants, Sledge Bros, Bloopers, Cheep Cheeps, and the Unagi or Maw-Ray.

As for our stages, we start the story in Brooklyn, relatively based on real world Brooklyn, including a swanky high-rise apartment and a large sewer area taking some inspiration from Mario Bros. In the Mushroom Kingdom, we have Princess Peach’s castle and the city surrounding it, all built on and around one of the giant round mountains familiar to the series, with several structures and systems in place that make platforming a standard part of everyday life. Around the back of Peach’s castle there is a training course that Peach puts Mario through, based on the standard Mario levels.

From there, the heroes travel to the Kong Kingdom, visiting a few Easter Egg locales along the way. The Kong Kingdom seems entirely built around kart racing, working in a plot-relevant reason for Mario Kart to be part of the story. Mario and Donkey Kong also face off in a Smash-style arena at one point. After obtaining the Kong’s help, an extended action scene takes place on Rainbow Road. Finally, we have the Dark Lands, Bowser’s flying castle and kingdom all wrapped into one and combined with his castle from the Paper Mario games, covered in lava and featuring several castles. We also have the Ice Kingdom shown briefly that Bowser destroys at the beginning.

All items were previously listed, so let’s get it done! Here’s what we’ve got so far:

Mario Strikers: Battle League

MARIO STRIKERS: BATTLE LEAGUE

Welcome back to the Mario series, everybody! We'll just be coming back her for a few weeks, first to cover every Mario property that has come out since I finished, and secondly to give a possible second chance to a list of characters that have been knocking around my brain and making me question my own judgment ever since I finished. Before we get to that, though, let's do the new games first!

Mario Strikers: Battle League is a new entry in the Strikers series, based around football (or soccer for Yanks like me), and is the apparent third in a series of new revivals for old sports series. As such, I fully expect to see a new Sluggers game sometime soon, with Rosalina, Lumas, Pauline, Boom Boom, Pom Pom, Nabbit, and all of those random enemies that have seen playability in recent years, like Spikes, Chargin' Chucks, Ninjis, and Chain Chomps. Looking forward to it, Nintendo!

Our game came with a lot of the old favorites, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser, with Shy Guy, Daisy, Pauline, Diddy, Bowser Jr., and Birdo as DLC later on, and Boom Boom as the goalie. There's also a little tutorial bot named Futbot, but he doesn't seem playable, and the Super Team already covers our representation here (maybe a Futbot-themed color swap?). The game play is pretty much as you used to know it, with the electrical gates covering the out-of-bonds regions, items such as the mushroom, banana, red shell, green shell, star, and bob-omb doing what you'd expect, and Hyper Strikes that function as the super move.

The stages this time all take place in this big dome out in space, where two halves are generated and combined at the start of each match, meaning each side of the stage has a different gimmick to it at different times. The possible combinations include Lava Castle, Spooky Mansion, Jungle Retreat, Mushroom Hill, Royal Castle, Desert Ruin, Planetoid, and Urban Rooftop, all about what they sound like.

Anyway, that's it for now! Here's what we've got:

Characters:

Mario

Luigi

Peach

Daisy

Rosalina

Pauline

Toad

Yoshi

Birdo

Donkey Kong

Diddy Kong

Wario
