Link approaches Nayru while she sings, encountering Nayru’s childhood friend and loyal bodyguard resting against a tree, a hotheaded guy in funny clothes who looks at Link as a rival.

This is Ralph. When Nayru ends up kidnapped by the game’s villain, he leaps into action, determined to rescue her first before Link does. As a result, he and Link encounter each other multiple times throughout the game, often working their way through the same dungeons.

Considering he is racing Link through most of the same locations, logic would dictate he is using most of the same tools Link is using to get there, making him a natural choice to take on the unique mechanics appearing in Oracle of Ages. As a fighter, he will be quick and agile, slightly more so than Link is.
