Character Sheet: The Youth

THE YOUTH

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Today, let's cover the main player avatar from both of the BS Zelda games, BS The Legend of Zelda and its sequel Ancient Stone Tablets. They don't have a canon name, but they are referred to as "the youth" or "the mysterious youth" in the games' narration and by Zelda and other supporting characters, so I'm going with that. It's better than "BS Zelda Boy" and "BS Zelda Girl" at any rate.

So, strictly speaking, they are just taking the place of Link in the gameplay of Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past, so I struggled for a bit on what kind of moveset they would have. However, there are quite a few items and powers unique to those games that have been mostly left in the dust by the more general Link moveset, and even things the Old Man moveset didn't cover, so I figure we can use those. I will also pull heavily from the contents of the Big Bag provided at the beginning of most episodes.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Good Bee

This move will release a Good Bee from a bottle carried by the youth. The Good Bee will then linger around the youth and attack opponents at random, dealing minor damage. The youth can call it back to them with another press of the button.

Side B: Bug-Catching Net

The youth will swing out their bug-catching net, snagging opponents and keeping them trapped in one spot, allowing the youth to follow up with a second attack.

Up B: Ocarina

The youth will play the teleport tune on their Ocarina, and a small twister will pick them up and carry them high into the air.

Down B: Candlestick

The youth will pull out a candlestick and sweep it before them, lighting up anyone struck by it with a burst of fire.

Final Smash: Silver Arrow

The eight stone tablets will appear and hover in the air around the youth as they draw back their silver arrow and fire it for a devastating strike.

Entrance: The beam of light from the beginning of Ancient Stone Tablets will appear, depositing the youth on the stage.

Taunts: Up, the youth will hold up one of the stone tablets. Side, the youth will flip through the Book of Mudora. Down, the youth will sort through their Big Bag.

Character Sheet: Linkle

LINKLE

Today, we begin the third (and probably last) big character haul of the Zelda series, assuming the Tingle and CDi games, the remakes, the animated series, and the comics don't add in anything too drastic. Our list covers twenty-eight familiar faces, and they are:

1. Linkle

2. The Youth

3. Wild Zelda

4. Wild Impa

5. Twili Midna

6. Lana

7. Darmani

8. Yunobo

9. Mikau

10. Sidon

11. Teba

12. Riju

13. Hestu

14. Epona

15. Tingle

16. Agitha

17. Purah & Robbie

18. Yves

19. Terrako

20. King Rhoam

21. Wild Fairies

22. Monk Maz Koshia

23. Cia

24. Astor

25. Volga

26. Wizzro

27. Manhandla

28. Sooga

Today, we'll be covering Linkle, a gender-flipped version of Link at least in concept, though she seems to be a separate person from him in canon. She appears only in Hyrule Warriors and its two re-releases, acting as the main character for the additional story mode in Warriors Legends. She came with two distinct movesets, one based on twin crossbows, and the other based on the Pegasus Boots.

With her crossbows, she could use regular bolts and bomb arrows that she could fire in several different directions. She also had a very strong focus on her legs, with her Pegasus Boots moveset almost entirely built around them and her crossbow moveset incorporating several as well. I'm . . . not going to dwell on the implications of the game designers' preferences with that. Either way, she has about every kind of kick you could think of, from dive kicks, roundhouse kicks, forward kicks, spin kicks, somersaults, backflips, and running knee hits. She could also use a Cucco to float around a bit.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Four-Point Crossbows

This will be based on her attack where she shoots her crossbows in four different directions, but suited more for Smash. This move will cause her to fire two shots, one ahead and one behind her, then another two shots, one above and one below her.

Side B: Fiery Kick

She will flap her Pegasus Boots and kick forward with a spiral of flame around her, carrying her forward and doing damage.

Up B: Cucco Float

Much like Malon and Link, she will pull out a Cucco that will flap upwards with her. She will probably get a bit more lift, boosted by her Pegasus Boots.

Down B: Roundhouse Spinning Kick

She will throw a strong kick forward, dealing heavy damage on the first strike, and then carry it around for several subsequent smaller strikes both in front of and behind her.

Final Smash: Giant Cucco

The Giant Cucco playable in Hyrule Warriors will pop its head up out of a portal, with Linkle retreating back in fear before it bursts out and rampages around the stage.

Entrance: Linkle will run on, check her upside down map for a second, and decide she's here.

Taunts: Up, Linkle will grin and wave at the camera. Side, she will perform a number of quick kicks. Down, a Cucco will run around her feet and she will fall over.

Miscellaneous Zelda Returning Characters

RETURNING CHARACTERS

So, we've got a lot to do today, specifically to update and refine all of the returning characters who appeared in Hyrule Warriors or any other oddball game from the Zelda series.

First off, we have every rendition of Link, specifically Link, Toon Link, Young Link, and Wild Link. For the most part, I think the refining's already perfect for base Link, since his moveset is built upon the core elements that appear across all game like swords, arrows, boomerangs, and bombs, and although Link had seven movesets, none of them brought that much new or specific to him, so let's move on. Young Link likewise was built upon the differences he had in Ocarina of Time and his specialties from Majora's Mask, likewise already added in. Toon Link was mostly built from Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks, and Warriors didn't really change that. Last but not least, Wild Link also built upon the moveset already established in Breath of the Wild, so he's no different either.

Zelda has four returning forms to go over, including her base self, Sheik, Tetra, and Toon Zelda. Zelda's moveset was already heavily laden with the things that her Warriors moveset represented, so I see no need to change anything. Sheik leaned way more into the music with lots of attacks built on the songs she teaches Link, but I'd still like her moveset to be a mix of the Smash ninja stuff and the music, so maybe we can substitute an attack in with one of these, but its not that important. Tetra did use boiling water instead of bullets, which is an interesting idea, but otherwise her moveset was basically what I imagined. And of course, Toon Zelda built most of her moveset off of the Phantoms from Spirit Tracks just like I did, so we're good there.

Let's talk about Impa. Impa's moveset previously was only built off of Sheik and other random things here and there, but now, we have a whole two Warriors movesets to work with. In the main Warriors game, Impa had a giant blade that she could use in various ways, with some water based attacks and kunai thrown in, as well as a naginata with a bunch of fire attacks. As for the Age of Calamity moveset, that one is distinct enough from the Impa we all know to make into her own moveset, so I would like Impa's standard to be a Giant Blade slash, her side to be a fiery thrust from her Naginata, her up to be a teleport just like Sheik's, and her down to stab the Giant Blade into the ground. Her final smash can be the rain of kunai or the giant circle of naginatas.

Ganondorf has at least three forms to cover, himself, Beast Ganon, and Calamity Ganon. Ganondorf himself wields a great sword I would like to incorporate at least into his standard set, with some lightning and darkness and a trident mixed in. Outside of what we have, I'd like at least for his lightning trident to be a move, but that's it. Beast Ganon isn't anything too original, however, if his beam of red lightning from his mouth is not part of the moveset I would like that to be his standard B. Calamity Ganon returns too, with a more humanoid body that I would like to be the basic avatar body, with the more gaseous forms coming out for certain attacks. His moveset in Warriors is heavily based on all things to do with Calamity and Malice, just like mine was, so I think we're solid.

Now, I want to tend to some species if we can. Most of them, I've had to do a little finagling with, knowing that Warriors was coming. Across the series, the most prominent Gorons have been Darunia, Darmani, Daruk, and Yunobo. I created a core moveset based on the main games, and gave it to Darunia with Daruk as an echo. However, now Darunia, Daruk, and Yunobo now have distinct movesets built around their personalities thanks to the Warriors games, so I would like to shift that old moveset entirely over to Darmani (who we will cover later) and update Darunia and Daruk now.

Darunia's moveset was entirely built around the megaton hammer he wields, with some lava spouts, butt bashes, flaming boulders, and fire hands built into the mix. I would like his standard to be a hammer smash strong enough to make an earthquake, his side to be a fire hand attack, his up B to be a butt bash that sends him up into the air, and his down B to be a flaming boulder. His final smash can still be the eruption of Death Mountain. As for Daruk, he has a lot of brute strength built in with his club helping out, alongside his personal shield and some lava based stuff too. For his standard, I'm going to do a series of rapid punches, his side will be a shoulder bash with his shield in place, his up B will cause an eruption under his feet, and his down will create his shield around him. His final will incorporate Vah Rudania.

The Zoras were kind of in the same boat as the Gorons. I made one moveset and gave it to Ruto and Mipha, but now I'd like to give that to Mikau and create new ones for Ruto, Mipha, and Sidon. Ruto's standard will create a whirlpool, her side will have her ride a small wave across the stage, her up will have her dive into a pool and then burst out of it upward into the air, and her down will have her dive into a pool and then pop up in a new location. Her final will be Lord Jabu-Jabu or the big ball of water she races around in. Mipha's standard will send out an orb of water as a projectile, her side will stab forward with her trident, her up will cause her to swim up in a water spout, and her down will cause it to rain bombs in front of her. Her final will include Vah Ruta.

Though not quite as tangled, I did have the Ritos Medli and Revali as echoes of each other, and would now like to split them. Medli's was fairly close to what I gave her, though I would like to remove all trace of Revali's bow or gale. Her harp is still in place with its beams of light, I would like her to blow gusts of wind instead of arrows, and I would like her up B mostly to be just kind of taking off into the air instead of being blown up by Revali's Gale. Revali on the other hand will keep Revali's Gale and his arrows as his standard, with his aerial kick as his down B and a whirlwind as his side. Medli will keep Valoo as her final and Revali will keep Vah Medoh.

Last but not least, the Gerudo. Nabooru did not appear in Warriors, sadly, but I think she can keep most of the moveset based on the Gerudo, just remove anything distinctly Urbosa. As for Urbosa, let's keep her lightning strike, of course, as standard or down, with her shield bash as side or down, her flipping kick as the up B, and maybe the lightning wave taking up down if the others go to standard and side. I would also like to incorporate her thunder gauge. Naturally Vah Naboris will be her final.

Let's talk some allies! Midna will probably stay mostly as is, though Twili Midna does specifically use the bridge that she transports through twilight, and I believe I had that in Midna's moveset, so let's remove it, and maybe add in her dark whirlwind or another attack with her hair.  Fi will probably stay as is, with all of her various dancing and sword moves, though Din, Nayru, and Farore's help may be a welcome final smash addition (or we can just use Levias).

King Daphnes returns, still making good use of his boat form, so that's all still good. I don't think there's much I need to add. Surprisingly, I think my Marin moveset had more references to Link's Awakening than the Warriors one did, so I'm going to keep it as is. The Great Fairy's mostly good, as I like keeping the three goddess powers as their moveset, though I like the bottle a lot and I think I'll put that as Down B, with the three spells as the other attacks. Ravio, as well, like my moveset, used most of the items he sells you so I don't see much need to change.

Breath of the Wild's in a special camp, with an entire Warriors game built totally around it, so we have a few more allies to cover there. First is King Rhoam. The moveset I already had was built almost entirely off of his early game old man persona, and Warriors did a good deal to differentiate those movesets, so the one I had, I'm simply going to rename to Old Man Rhoam, and give King Rhoam a brand new moveset, so that old one gets a new name and that's it. Then we have Master Kohga, who used a lot of his abilities from his Warriors moveset in the moveset I built, though I don't remember the face laser, and I would like to incorporate the banana aspect. So, standard is face laser, side is the big metal ball, up is his teleportation, and down is the bananas to refuel himself. Final Smash is whatever I had before.

As for the villains, Zant uses most of the things I gave him, so not much need to change. I don't believe I gave Ghirahim the tether mechanic, and I would like to incorporate that. Work it in wherever it fits better than the currently existing move. Most of Skull Kid's moveset popped up in either his or Majora's moveset, so we're good there. Yuga used his brush and paintings, as well as Ganon's trident, most of which I believe I incorporated, so that's good. And yeah, I think I've covered it all.

Outside of major named characters, we have quite a few returning enemy types, including the Hylian Soldiers, Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Stalfos, Poes, Bulblins, Deku Babas, Darknuts, Dodongos, Gohmas, Wizzrobes, Octoroks, Yiga Clan Members, Lynels, and Hinoxes, all of which come pretty standard. I see no reason to differentiate the Battle-Tested Guardian from the regular Ancient Guardians, so I think I'm just going to make him a skin. Everything else is mostly the same.

Are we done? I think we're done. Yes! Now, we have . . . I think the final count was twenty-eight newcomers. We'll see tomorrow!

ZELDA GAME & WATCH GAMES

Not much to cover today, just three Legend of Zelda-related Game & Watch etc. type games. First, a two-screen Game & Watch game from 1989, that pits Link fighting against Moblins and Stalfos, with dragons acting as the bosses. Then came the Legend of Zelda Game Watch (not Game & Watch, but it still fit in here), a small game you could play on your wrist pitting like against Keese and Aquamentus. BS Zelda Games

BS ZELDA GAMES

No, the title has nothing to do with any sort of bovine fecal matter. The BS refers to the Japanese Broadcast Satellite, as both BS The Legend of Zelda and its sequel BS The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets were both released weekly as chapters on the Satellaview system and were basically just super cut down versions of the original game and A Link to the Past. This game technically has two new characters, an unnamed avatar boy and girl who take the place of Link and basically just do everything he did. I . . . um, don't think that qualifies them to be playable. Does Link currently have an echo? Hmm.

Anyway, that all about covers it. Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Link: Sword, slash, swipe, spin attack, thrust, spike, sword beams, Master Sword, Fire Rod, magic spells, fiery blasts, flamethrower, pillars of flame, dragon, Gauntlets, ball and chain, burrow, boulder, ground pound, pillar, Spinner, more spinners, spikes, lightning, tornado, tower

Link's Crossbow Training

LINK'S CROSSBOW TRAINING

There's really barely anything to say here. Link's Crossbow Training was a short little spinoff game, created specifically to advertise the Wii Zapper, a little plastic toy you could plug your Wiimote and nunchuck into to hold like a gun and fire at the screen. The game used the general engine and graphics of Twilight Princess, with stages based on Ordon Village, Goron City, Zora River, Lon Lon Ranch, and Gerudo Desert, and enemies like Stalfos and Bulblins occasionally acting as targets. That's really it. I have nothing else to say.

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer feat. The Legend of Zelda

CADENCE OF HYRULE: CRYPT OF THE NECRODANCER

FEAT. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

Today, we cover a crossover between the Legend of Zelda series, and the music-based indie game, Crypt of the NecroDancer, published by Brace Yourself Games. The game features one of the main characters of NecroDancer, Cadence, finding herself in Hyrule and teaming up with Link and Zelda against a new villain named Octavo. Now, as this is a crossover game, I'm not going to worry much about making movesets, as Cadence will be covered mostly in her own series, while Octavo, though being original to this game, feels much more like a NecroDancer villain, and should probably join that roster. There is one though that I would at least like to consider, that being the secret character, the Deku Scrub named Yves.

Across the game, your gameplay is fairly similar for the main three, with weapons you can use in tandem with the music, including daggers, swords, broadswords, spears, flails, shovels, longswords, and rapiers, which all come in multiple varieties, alongside arrows, bombs, bombchus, boomerangs, bottles, bows, the Cane of Somaria, the Deku Leaf, Din's Fire, fire arrows, the Fire Rod, the hookshot, ice arrows, the Ice Rod, lightning arrows, the magic cape, the megaton hammer, the mirror shield, Nayru's love, the Pegasus Anklet, poison arrows, the power glove, the Rito feather, a dowser made by Tingle, and a lute that acts as your fast travel device. Yves being the only playable character original to this game that isn't more of a NecroDancer character, he seems best to take these on, however, it should be noted that he specifically cannot use most weapons, except for the shovel, the bombs and bombchus, and the lute, while also gaining the ability to burrow underground and fire a rock from his mouth . . . still might get something.

From here, our enemies include Chuchus, Octoroks, Deku Scrubs, Lizalfos, Moblins, Tektites, Wizzrobes, Darknuts, Gibdoes, and Keese, with our bosses being fusions between standard bosses and random instruments, such as Wizzroboe, Gohmaracas, Gleeokenspiel, and the Bass Guitarmos Knights. Outside of that, Ganon and Octavo also have boss fights. Ganon's is pretty standard, and, for the sake of thoroughness, Octavo can wield musical swords, cast fireballs, create monsters, teleport, flash, and throw flats on the floor to damage you.

Our locations include a lot of the standards, like the Lost Woods, Kakariko Village, Death Mountain, Lake Hylia, Gerudo Desert, and a beach (it didn't have a name). The dungeons include Frozen Grotto, Lost Swamp, Windmill Hutt, the Temple of Storms, Gerudo Ruins, and Hyrule Castle.

And that's pretty much it. Here's what we've got so far:

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

HYRULE WARRIORS: AGE OF CALAMITY

Today, let's cover the second Hyrule Warriors game, which generally follows the same concept as the first, except while the first was a big general Legend of Zelda crossover, this games acts as a direct prequel/sequel/thing to Breath of the Wild. We were initially sold on it being a prequel that showed the great calamity and ended on a downer note with the deaths of the four champions, but lo and behold, it turned out to be more of an alternate timeline, where a time-traveling robot created by Zelda ended up saving the champions and changing the past. So now we have two points where the Zelda timeline splits.

As such, this game pulls characters from Breath of the Wild, and Breath of the Wild only. Obviously, we'll start with Link, who got four distinct movesets: a one-handed weapon, a spear, a two-handed weapon, and a guardian flail (basically using the arms of an Ancient Guardian like a whip). With his one-handed set, he can slash, thrust, stab down, and spin attack, while also shield surfing, and using a bow and arrows. With his spear, he can sweep, stab, flip himself into the air, charge, pull off a bullet stab, and blow a gust of wind. With his two-handed weapons, he can slash, flip, slam hard, spin attack, thrust, shoot up a geyser, and heal himself with food. And finally with the guardian flail, he can throw them, use them as a tether, use them like a helicopter, steal others' weapons, blast fire, and create a barrier. It should also be noted that all movesets for every character can make use of the Bomb, Magnesis, Cryonis, and Stasis runes in different ways (generally mixing and matching their weapon capabilities with them).

Princess Zelda had three movesets of her own, one using the Sheikah Slate (basically all about the previously mentioned runes), one with the Bow of Light, and one with the Master Cycle. Honestly, I want to go heavy into the slate for her, so I'll mostly cover her usage of it. With the slate, she can pull around a metal block, create ice blocks, drop icicles, summon a big jumble of metal, create a walking bomb, pull a minecart, and mess around with her stasis. With the bow of light, she can create spheres, beams, and rings out of light, fire light arrows, and fire off a triforce blast. Finally, with the Master Cycle, she can spin around, do a flip, ride a wave of ice, sweep her wheels, blast a laser, summon a shield, go up a ramp, pull off a loop-de-loop, and travel through portals.

Once again, these developers love Impa, and they created my favorite version of Impa. This one is basically a Naruto-style ninja (e.g. with a lot of magical elements mixed in). She can throw her hat, disappear, use a bunch of exploding seals, perform a bunch of quick cuts, summon clones of herself, set off fireworks, teleport, fly with a glider, summon a giant Sheikah eye, and ride a giant toad. (When I'm done here, this version is very much going to be the character to get Kamek's place as my icon. I love this so much, how has she not been playable in Smash yet?)

As you might have guessed, our four champions and their four descendants are all playable here as well. We'll start with the Zoras. Mipha can slash, splash water, spin around and flip with her trident, surf, swim underground, create a water fountain, summon a water spout, an orb of water, and rain bombs from above. Her brother Sidon will slash, perform a midair flip, stun people with his grin, create a dolphin or shark of water around himself, stab and slash with his trident, go fishing, perform an x-slash, create a vortex, and send a pulse of energy through the water.

Now, for the Gorons. Daruk will smash and swing around his big club thing, bash with his shoulder, call down meteors, roll, punch a rock into pieces, summon a magma pillar, cast a shield around himself, roll along a magma ramp, and cause an eruption. Yunobo is a bit more clumsy and will rely on his cannon more, throwing rocks, slapping, belly flopping, summoning a rocket fist, bouncing, leaving a crater, eating a rock roast, summoning the same barrier, and spilling lava.

For the Ritos, Revali will, of course, use Revali's gale, fire arrows and bomb arrows, summon up gale winds and whirlwinds, grab with his talons, divebomb, and perform an aerial kick. Teba, on the other hand, will fire off full volleys of arrows, have a targeting reticle, fire arrows into the sky to rain from above, while also summoning whirlwinds and performing aerial maneuvers.

Finally, we get to see our Gerudo ladies in action. Urbosa will slash, spin, and shield bash, perform a flipping kick, throw her shield, use lightning to strike, as a wave, as a wall, or to boost her speed, all controlled with a thunder gauge mechanic. Riju is much more paired up with her sand seal Patricia, that she will guide while surfing on her shield behind it. Patricia can leap and go into a rage mode, while Riju can also summon lightning to strike and call in her Gerudo guards to help her.

While not exactly "champions," we had two more in our roster who basically existed to represent their respective races, so let's cover them here. Hestu is the big Korok that rewards you for completing the Korok sidequest in the original game. Here, he will shake his maracas, let off fireworks, drop rocks, shoot arrows at targets, ride on a Korok leaf, and call in other Koroks to charge, throw junk, and help him fly. Master Kohga is the leader of the Yiga Clan, originally allied with the forces of Calamity, but joins the heroes after he and his people are betrayed. He can hover, summon a barrier, throw boulders, body slam, throw a tantrum, fire a laser from his face, roll around on a giant metal ball, teleport, call in his minions, and eat lots of bananas.

King Rhoam is the last of our base roster and core cast, and he has (sort of) two forms, his noble kingly self and his Old Man persona. As the king, he carries around a broadsword and can spin, slash, slam, spin attack, stab into the ground, perform a wind cut, and leap and spin with it, while the Old Man carries an axe and uses a bit more of the rustic elements he uses as a hermit (which mostly already filled his current moveset, meaning we might split things up).

Terrako is an original character to the game, a robot built by Zelda and her mother when she was a child that was put away by Rhoam. When the Calamity occurred, Zelda's plea awakened Terrako, leading it to travel back in time and prevent the Calamity from happening and creating a new timeline. Terrako can create a time portal, wield an axe, perform a spin attack, use helicopter blades, aim lasers, fire orbs and energy pulses, and carry a shield. (Very similar to the Guardians, but distinct enough).

Most of the secret unlockables were made up of random odd figures who would have been around at the time. This included the four Great Fairies, who acted as a tag team, moving around in their weird flower pods and switching out, slapping fighters, blasting hearts, spreading pink mist, hiding in their pods, blowing kisses, sucking opponents in, and sprouting plants everywhere. Monk Maz Koshia, the DLC boss where you get to actually fight one of the desiccated monks from the shrines, will create clones of himself, throw spears, punch the ground, turn into an orb, throw a giant boulder, grow bigger, swing a hammer, spin attack, and summon an entire shrine.

In the DLC, we get three more fun characters, a Battle-Tested Guardian (which is just an Ancient Guardian but on our side), the scientists Purah & Robbie as a tag team, and Sooga, Master Kohga's right hand man. The Guardian could slash, spin, pound, and body slam with its body, and fire a laser blast, with targeting or homing capacity, summon a barrier, and fire from the air. Purah & Robbie used a whole saw contraption, with a shield, jetpack, hammer, and energy weapons equipped, that could also use beams, explosions, bombardment, and lightning from the four Divine Beasts, and they could also use a Sheikah Tower warp to get around. Sooga had twin blades that he could do a cross slash, double thrust, spin, and quick flurry with. He could also go into a rage, attack with giant metal swords, throw exploding kunai, cut through a tornado, counter, and erect a statue of his master.

Finally, let's cover the villains. First, we have a dark sorcerer named Astor, a sort of Agahnim-figure who masterminded the whole calamity in order to resurrect Ganon. He was never playable, sadly, though he seemed to have a full programmed-in moveset. Anyway, he could summon malice, use constellations as a shield, teleport, let off waves of shadow, summon dark balls all over the place, and set off an explosion. After him, we actually got to play as Calamity Ganon, who could slash, punch the ground, summon and absorb malice, fire a blast from his mouth, wield a mace, fire a cannon, summon thorn pillars and lightning spikes, and take on a ghastly form.

We could also play as all four Divine Beasts for stretches, but those were mostly, "barrel through and fire lasers." They work better as stage possibilities anyway. Hylian Soldiers act as your allies, with Ancient Guardians, Bokoblins, Moblins, Chuchus, Lizalfos, Stalfos, Wizzrobes, Octoroks, Yiga, Lynels, Taluses, and Hinoxes acting as our enemy classes.

As for stages, we have scenarios taking place at Hyrule Castle, Castle Town, Fort Hateno, Zora's Domain, Eldin Volcano, Tabantha, Gerudo Desert, Hyrule Outpost, Korok Forest, Crenel Peak, Akkala Citadel, the Yiga Clan Hideout, the Spring of Courage, and the Great Plateau, all familiar locales for Breath of the Wild players.

Hyrule Warriors

HYRULE WARRIORS

Today, we begin our run of . . . more general spinoff games, not including the Tingle or CDi games. Those will come later. These include: Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Cadence of Hyrule, Link's Crossbow Training, the BS games (I'll cover them together), and the Game & Watch games (also will do a combined post for that one). Please note, that I will not be including Legends or Definitive Edition for today's post, as I'm counting those as ports and will cover them in that section. However, literally every DLC character appeared in all three versions, so we don't have to worry about that.

So, what is Hyrule Warriors? Hyrule Warriors is a crossover of sorts with Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors series, which takes that series' playstyle, playing as various generals and heroes from Japan's history and fighting your way through hordes of enemies on a battlefield as an unstoppable one-man army, and casting Legend of Zelda characters in the various roles. Obviously these are big sweeping moves meant to take out whole groups at once, while Smash has smaller one-on-one based moves and such, so whatever we pull here will require a little tweaking, but I think we can do it.

Now, while we have a roster of roughly thirty-one fighters, many fighters also have different weapons that give them entirely different movesets, so we're going to do our best to filter through them all. First up is Link, who ended up with seven total movesets, utilizing a basic sword, magic rod (Fire Rod actually, but that's what it's called), the Great Fairy (which is actually more of a Great Fairy moveset than anything), the Iron Gauntlets, the Master Sword, Epona, and a spinner from Twilight Princess. Using the sword, he could slash, swipe, perform spin attacks, thrust, pull of a downward spike, and throw sword beams. You know, the basics. The Master Sword is basically the same, just way more powerful.

With the Fire Rod, he could cast a number of magic spells, as well as summon fiery blasts, a flamethrower attack, pillars of flame, and a dragon made of fire. The Great Fairy moveset basically involved the Great Fairy trapping him in a bottle and then proceeding to toy with him, including flying around, stomping with her feet, said bottle, splashing water, creating a magic circle, dropping bombs and energy balls, creating whirlpools, and summoning both Levias and the moon from Majora's Mask. With the gauntlets, he had a ball and chain that he could toss out and swing around, as well as burrow, pick up a boulder, ground pound, and swing a giant pillar. While riding Epona, the horse could swing her head around, leap, charge, kick with her back legs, and stomp the ground. And finally, the Spinner could summon more spinners, stick out spikes, summon lightning and tornadoes, and climb a tower.

Through the DLC, both Young Link and Toon Link made their own appearances in the game. Young Link's moveset was based heavily on Majora's Mask, and he utilized both his sword and the Fierce Deity Mask. He could slash and throw sword beams, spin attack, hover with the Pegasus boots, and transform into the Fierce Deity for a giant slash. Last but not least, he could pull off a large triforce blast.

Toon Link came with two distinct movesets, his Light Sword based on Wind Waker, and his Sand Wand based on Spirit Tracks. In his sword set, he could slash, stab, and spin attack as always, one strong enough to whip up a hurricane, and he could also blow wind with his Deku Leaf. His Sand Wand set could summon blocks of sand, which he could ride, as well as his spirit train, armed with a cannon.

Now we go on to Zelda. Zelda in her standard iconic form comes with three movesets: her rapier (which is mostly her light magic), her baton (the Wind Waker), and the Dominion Rod from Twilight Princess. With the rapier, she could slash and stab, but also charge light magic, throw balls of light, shoot light arrows, float, and perform a triforce blast. With the Wind Waker, she could whip up vortexes and cyclones, call down lightning, and create damaging musical notes. The Dominion Rod let her control a large statue with a hammer or a large cylinder that could roll around.

From here, her variants Sheik, Tetra, and Toon Zelda (Spirit Tracks) all got moves as well. Sheik was equipped with a harp on which she could play the various songs from Ocarina, allowing her to summon whirlwinds and shields of water, meteors, fire circles, waves of lightning, shadow vortexes, and blasts of light. She could also teleport and use kunai as throwing or slashing weapons.

Tetra was armed with her cutlass and blunderbuss as always, allowing her to slash and fire shots of boiling water, as well as fire off a triforce blast given her heritage. Toon Zelda, on the other hand, acted as a spirit inhabiting a Phantom armor. Using the phantom's sword, she could slash and thrust, but she could also stomp, punch and swing her arms around, roll up into a ball, and use her inherent Zelda magic to set off explosions of light.

Apparently, the Koei game developers are as big fans of Impa as I am, because they give her lots of special treatment in these games, and I love it. This version of Impa comes with two main movesets, one a giant blade, and the other a naginata. With the blade, she can slash, dash, spin jump into the air, stab her blade into the ground, create a big ball of water, and rain kunai from above. With the naginata she can throw it, cause explosions, summon a wall of flames, and call up a large circle of giant naginatas.

Next, we have Ganondorf, who gets two main movesets, plus a giant Beast Ganon form. With his great sword, he can slash, slam the ground, let off a fiery blast, summon a ball of dark magic, summon Beast Ganon, and call down lightning. His trident is much more lightning-based, with which he can strike, thrust, slam into the ground, throw it, spin, and call down lightning again. As Beast Ganon, he can claw, pound the ground, lunge, create shockwaves, and fire red lightning.

From here, a lot of our further additions are grouped by game of origin, first being Darunia and Ruto from Ocarina of Time, largely acting as the Goron and Zora reps of this game. Darunia wields his giant hammer, which he smashes with, swings around, and spins with it, while also stomping, creating lava spouts, rolling up into a ball, butt bashing, throwing a flaming boulder, and attacking with a fire hand. Ruto, on the other hand, slashes with her fins, creates whirlpools and water orbs, dives into pools to teleport, creates a sphere of water, summons tidal waves, and rides small waves to get around.

For Twilight Princess, we got Agitha (of all characters), Midna, and Zant, later getting the Twili form of Midna as DLC. Agitha attacks mainly with her parasol and summoning giant bugs out of light. She can float in the air, ride a giant butterfly, send out a spray of butterflies, summon a giant rhinoceros beetle to gore you with its horn, summon a tornado, and grow butterfly wings of her own. Zant, on the other hand, spins around a lot, stomps like he does, slashes with his scimitars, calls up Zant heads, goes into a berserker rage, grows gigantic and stomps on you, attacks with a giant hand, and throws a giant energy ball.

Midna in her imp form mostly attacks with her hair, slamming, punching, and grabbing you with it. She can also summon a wolf to attack, create portals, whip up a dark whirlwind, and take on her big spidery form from the climax. In her Twili form, she constantly has the Mirror of Twilight circling around her, which can fire off a light beam and throw energy balls, and she can also summon a hand, a giant cannon and a bridge, throw a twilight sphere, call up more wolves, and throw a shattering tear. She can also summon twilight itself whenever.

Next, for Skyward Sword, we got Fi and Ghirahim, the two main sword spirits. Fi could become a sword, naturally, but she also had a number of dancing moves, like a spin kick, a pirouette, and a flying spin. She could also create a flower pattern on the ground, call Din, Nayru, and Farore (the goddesses) to help her, and fire off a triforce blast. Ghirahim was armed with his Demon Blade, with which he could slash, shoot a beam, throw his floating knives, teleport, levitate, bring down a force field ceiling, summon demons, and create a connecting line between himself and one opponent.

Tingle and Skull Kid joined Young Link from Majora's Mask. Tingle could attack with a map and a bag of rupees, inflate the balloon on his back, bounce and roll on the balloon, toss out balloon bombs, and smack you with a trophy of himself. Skull Kid could use Tatl and Tael to attack, perform a spinning rush, summon a puppet with his Ocarina, fire a laser beam from his face, summon cyclones, and meteors, and call down the moon.

Besides Tetra and Toon Link, King Daphnes and Medli also joined us from Wind Waker. King Daphnes used his boat's sail mostly, striking with it in various ways and making it spin around, but he could also take on his boat form, summon up a tidal wave, splash people with his wake, and strike them with his mast, as well as call up a whirlwind. Medli of course could use her sacred harp to fire beams of light and summon the Mark of Din, but she could also fly, using her wings to blow gusts of wind and whip up tornados.

Marin was a rare one from all the way back in Link's Awakening. She was equipped with the bell that acted as one of the instruments to awaken the Wind Fish. She could use it to attack with a bubble, a water spout, or a shockwave of sound, or she could simply summon the Wind Fish himself. Ravio and Yuga also joined us from A Link Between Worlds. Ravio made use of his hammer, as well as a number of other items he sold you, including the giant bomb, the Ice Rod, the Gale Boomerang, and bomb arrows. He could also just attack with his bag. Yuga mainly used his brush and portraits to attack, smacking you with the frames, traveling between portraits, making them explode, and summoning magic circles. He could also use Ganon's trident to summon lightning.

From here, we have a set of brand new characters created specifically for this game. The most important of these are the young mage Lana and our new villain Cia. We eventually learn that Cia and Lana were once the same person, a sage that kept the history of Hyrule throughout the ages. She ended up falling in love with the recurring hero Link, despite his intertwined destiny with Zelda. A sealed Ganondorf used this frustration to twist her heart and corrupt her. Cia cast all the goodness from her heart, which then became Lana, and worked to break apart Link and Zelda's destiny.

Lana comes with three movesets: her spellbook, her spear (basically nature magic and a moveset I really think was originally intended for Saria), and a summoning gate that she can use to bring monsters onto the field. With her spellbook, she was mostly a barrier maiden, summoning protective walls that she could ride on as a cube and hop between, but she could also summon whirlwinds and lightning, and throw out a flurry of pages. With her spear, she could sprout trees, including the Great Deku Tree and the baby Deku Tree, use a Deku Leaf and shoot Deku Seeds from a slingshot, and use water, ice, and wind here and there. With her summoning gate, she could call in King Dodongo, Manhandla, Gohma, and Argorok (most of which do most of the basics you expect from them).

Cia acts as our main villain for the first half of the game until Ganondorf takes over (surprise, surprise). She also has two minions, Volga and Wizzro, and I can't help shake the feeling that they were originally supposed to be Veran, Onox, and Vaati. There's a lot of similarities, but I couldn't tell you what happened. I know Capcom helped with those, maybe there were licensing issues? Anyway, Cia has a scepter and a whip, and she can summon tornadoes and waves of dark energy, throw energy balls, summon Dark Links, use a summoning gate, and create a grid where explosions go off.

Her minions Volga and Wizzro at least seem to generally represent draconic and spooky monster-type enemies respectively. Volga has a human and dragon form, the human form armed with a sword. He can breathe fire, fly with his wings, change just his arm to slash, create an eruption of flame, and splash flames around himself. Wizzro, on the other hand, can fire ghostly orbs and a horizontal beam, move through pools of shadow, grab you with Wallmaster hands, call of demonic shadow beasts to attack you, and create dark explosions.

Last, but not least, the Legends DLC gave us one more brand-new fighter: basically, Link as a girl. Though, strictly in canon, they are not the same person. Linkle is a ditzy girl from a nearby village who'd been raised by her grandmother to think she was the legendary hero, and when Cia's plan started, she set off on an adventure of her own. She gained two movesets, based on crossbows and Pegasus boots respectively. With the crossbows, she could fire off regular bolts in multiple directions, as well as bomb arrows, and she could perform rising kicks, fiery kicks, dive kicks. With the Pegasus Boots, she could perform a roundhouse kick, a somersault, diving kicks, running knee hits, backflips, forward kicks, lightning kicks, and spin kicks. If you couldn't guess, she's VERY leggy. She also uses a Cucco to hover.

And that's really it. There is also a giant Cucco you can play as, but it's basically a joke character, and you can only really peck and flutter around with it. From there, Hylian Soldiers and Gorons make up the bulk of your allies, while Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Stalfos, Poes, Bulblins, Deku Babas, Gibdoes, Aeralfos, Darknuts, Beamos, ReDeads, and Dinolfos make up the enemy armies and King Dodongo, Gohma, Manhandla, Argorok, and the Imprisoned act as bosses.

It's actually kind of stupidly difficult to find a good listing of the different battlefields in this game, despite there being very clear and distinct maps. Here's what I did manage to figure out though. We have Hyrule Castle, Hyrule Field, Eldin Caves, Faron Woods, the Valley of Seers (where Cia hangs out), Skyloft, the Sealed Grounds, Death Mountain, the Water Temple, Twilight Field, the Palace of Twilight, the Temple of the Sacred Sword, the Temple of Souls, Gerudo Desert, and Ganon's Tower. The Forsaken Fortress and the Wind and Earth Temples from Wind Waker were also added as DLC. I . . . think that's all of them.

And now, I think we're good. Yes? Yes. Here's what we've got so far:
