Character Sheet: Shroob

SHROOB

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. At least one I thought was never going to happen in a million, billion years. But here we are. The first ten are all Mario regulars who finally took the step up to playable. The other sixteen are originals to the Mario & Luigi games (or Origami King) specifically.

Today, we'll be covering the Shroobs, the alien race who invaded the Mushroom Kingdom in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time under the leadership of Princess Shroob. This is the only enemy species we'll be covering this time, and the only enemy species that will appear in the RPG roster. They come in many forms, from regular grunts, scientists, and the larger Shrooboids, all of which will be represented here.

Across the game, the Shroobs are seen flying around in their flying saucers and shooting laser guns, probably their most iconic moves, as well as firing massive laser blasts, calling in other saucers to shoot lasers from above, swimming in sand, throwing spike balls and giant hammers, summoning hammers, using special Shroob Bob-Ombs, throwing meteors, throwing fireballs and lightning, spinning and throwing maces, trapping opponents in crystal, and throwing lollipops (that one's more or less specific to a specific Shrooboid boss). Also their ships have shown the capacity to transform living beings into poisonous mushrooms. I'd say that's quite a bit.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Giant Laser

The Shroob will pull out its laser gun and fire off a blast. You can either fire off a regular blast, or you can hold the attack down, increasing the power and size of the blast, similar to characters like Samus.

Side B: Meteor

The Shroob will pull out a flaming meteor and throw it into the air, at which point it will careen down through the air at an angle like a meteor falling from the sky.

Up B: Flying Saucer

The Shroob will hop up into one of its saucers, its head poking out the top the way it does. You can fly around in this state for a short time at your leisure, pressing A to fire lasers from the ship's guns.

Down B: Crystal

The Shroob will freeze an opponent in a solid chunk of crystal, which will last for a short time, similar to being frozen in ice.

Final Smash: Invasion

A swarm of Shroob saucers will fly down from the sky and zoom all around the stage, firing off lasers everywhere. Everywhere a shot hits, purple mushrooms will spawn, spewing poisonous gas around the area. Every opponent hit will be turned into a purple mushroom.

Entrance: They will float down in a saucer and pop out of it.

Taunts: Up, the shroob will pirouette on one foot and point its gun to the left. Side, the shroob will pull out a lollipop and lick it for a second. Down, the shroob will dig into the sand for a second and pop back up wearing a scuba mask.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's check out our recurring thief character, Popple.
