Character Sheet: Pokey

 POKEY

Today, we begin our newcomers. I did say going into this that the RPGs would likely be the last shot for many of the frequent enemies you wouldn't expect to see on a Smash roster, but what I didn't expect was that the RPGs would actually come through for a lot of them. At least one I thought was never going to happen in a million, billion years. But here we are. The first ten are all Mario regulars who finally took the step up to playable. The other sixteen are originals to the Mario & Luigi games (or Origami King) specifically.

Today, let's cover Pokey, yet another one I didn't expect to do at all. Pokeys are cactus-like creatures normally inhabiting the desert levels, and can only be fully defeated when you strike their top segment. They largely achieved playability due to the boss battle against a paper and normal Pokey in Paper Jam, but they have plenty to go on from previous appearances as well.

Here's what we've got!

Standard B: Segment Toss

This is based on a common move for Pokeys, especially in the RPGs. The Pokey will pop out one of its segments and then spike it across the stage like a projectile.

Side B: Spinout

The Pokey will curl up into a circle and wheel across the stage, hitting opponents with its spikes, based on its moves in Paper Jam.

Up B: Needlenose

This is largely based on the Pokeys as they appear in the Yoshi's Island games. The Pokey will compact down and then launch its head skyward. Once the head lands, its body will reappear.

Down B: Segment

Since this was Goomba's down B, I suppose it doesn't make sense to not make it Pokey's move too, as that's one of the main things they are known for. Another possibility is it laying down and rolling across the stage the way it does in Paper Jam, though I imagine that can be a crouching movement.

Final Smash: Tornado

The Pokey will grow large and start spinning, whipping up a wild tornado as seen in many desert levels, as well as creating a quicksand pit in the area directly around it.

Entrance: It will dig up from the ground, the way it always does.

Taunts: Up, it will bounce its segments up and down for a second. Side, it'll wiggle in a belly-dance style motion. Down, it will bend over, forming an arc as a coin appears in the center.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover the Ninjis, another original to Super Mario Bros. 2!
