Gloom's Lair

GLOOM'S LAIR

The second addition to the Hyrule Map added for Tears of the Kingdom was an expansive maze of underground areas to explore, most commonly infested with Gloom.

This stage will be a flat Final Destination-type stage floating in the Hyrulean underground, with gloom coating the walls and caverns behind it. Every now and then, Gloom Hands will spawn on the stage as a miniboss.

Great Sky Island

GREAT SKY ISLAND

There were two important areas added to the Hyrule map for Tears of the Kingdom to help make it distinct from Breath of the Wild. The first was a number of islands floating in the sky, bearing most of the ancient Zonai technology.

A stage representing that would be set on the general islands and features of Great Sky Island, with the main platforms made up of the rocks and architecture seen there. On occasion those platforms will change around, with Zonai Wings floating in as temporary platforms and the white dragon flying by underneath and above as a platform from time to time.

Kalin

KALIN

Riruto grew up alongside a young girl, his best friend that he loves more than anything else.

This is Kalin, the inheritor of Zelda’s spirit in the same way Riruto inherited Link’s spirit. Like Riruto, she is eventually killed as well, finding herself trained by Princess Zelda in the spirit world before returning to life.

As a fighter, she acts as an echo of the manga version of Zelda, inheriting all the powers that that version of the princess uses, if maybe not as adeptly.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Kanan

KANAN

As Link, the half-human, half-elf lovechild half-brother of Zelda, set out on his journey to rescue the princess, he soon came upon his aunt, an elven warrior like his father.

This is Kanan, an elf who trains Link in all the abilities of his father. She would prove a valuable ally throughout that comic run.

As a fighter, she will be an echo of her brother, using all the same moves and powers that she trains Link to use.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Rune

RUNE

In the early days of Zelda, there was not too much to go on, resulting in some really weird adaptations. In one such adaptation, the story started with a young elf having a sordid affair with a human princess, causing a demon to be summoned by their forbidden union.

This young elf was Rune, Link’s father. He and his lover, Zelda’s mother, ended up both being murdered by the demon, leaving their lovechild, Link, to inherit his sword and his powers.

As a fighter, he will be similar to Link, but much more powerful, given the much higher power levels at play in that comic series. He himself will act as a gimmick representative for all the unique aspects of his series, using most of the unique skills Link uses in that one.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Gwonam

GWONAM

In 1993, Nintendo loaned out the rights to The Legend of Zelda for three games to be made on the Phillips CDi system. Anyone who knows anything about gaming knows full well how that panned out, with all three games being some of the most laughably bad games ever made, to the point that I hesitate to include characters from them in the actual “game” rosters.

One such character appearing in them was the wizard Gwonam, who acted as a sort of guide for Link on his quest.

As a fighter, he will act as an echo to King Harkinian, both acting as gimmick representatives for the three games. He will have higher power on his magical attacks than the king, but will likely be slower in speed.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Mineru

MINERU

In these memories, Zelda will be brought before King Rauru’s sister, a master of magic, to find a way to return to her own time.

This sister is Mineru. Thanks to a magical ability of her own, she is able to make her spirit persist centuries after her body has passed on, allowing her to wait until the present time, when Link finds her, constructs a new body for her from Zonai parts, and recruits her as the fifth sage.

As a fighter, Mineru will use a combination of her own magic, and the abilities of the Zonai golem that her spirit inhabits in the present, bringing with it all the strength and speed the construct possessed.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Queen Sonia

QUEEN SONIA

As Link finds his way down from the island and back into his familiar Hyrule, he will come across a number of small puddles in the middle of enormous glyphs on the ground, called Tears. These tears will react to Link’s presence, showing him visions of the ancient past, where Zelda was transported. There, she meets the ancient King Rauru and his queen.

This queen is named Sonia, a human who fell in love with the Zonai Rauru. She is the ancestor of Zelda, and is Zelda’s primary source in teaching her the ways of ancient magic. In the end, she is murdered by Ganondorf, kicking off the ancient war.

As a fighter, Sonia will act as an echo of her husband, both showing the ability to use the techniques that act as runes for Link in the present. She will be slower and less powerful than her husband, but with a higher magical propensity.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Zonai Construct

ZONAI CONSTRUCT

Link will set out across the sky island, encountering several automatons who both assist and attack him.

These are the Zonai Constructs, machines built by the ancient Zonai to perform various tasks. They had fighter builds who acted as guards and sometimes as combat practice, as well as steward builds who perform various forms of assistance, as well as many others.

As fighters, they will move at average speed and hit with about average power. Their movesets will pull primarily from the Zonai parts and pieces that can be used to build and create.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Rauru

RAURU

After several years of waiting, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild finally saw a sequel in Tears of the Kingdom. Investigating ancient tunnels far beneath Hyrule Castle, Link and Zelda come across the ancient decrepit form of Ganondorf, sealed away by a glowing hand. Their presence awakens the Dark Lord, with the Master Sword being destroyed and Link blacking out. He later comes to on an island floating in the sky, and finds himself being instructed by the spirit of a strange goat creature.

This is King Rauru, an ancient king of Hyrule and a member of the Zonai, a long extinct race with advanced technology and magic all their own. King Rauru was the one to seal away Ganondorf, whose arm replaced Link’s own to allow him to use their magic.

Being the person through whom Link can use the Zonai abilities in the game, Rauru’s moveset will pull from those. He will be fairly slow, but with a lot of magical power behind him.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Tulin

TULIN

As Link makes his way up Rito village in search of someone who can help him reach Vah Medoh, he will come across the wife and son of a local warrior.

This son is Tulin, the son of Teba, descendant of Revali. Though he acts as a mere NPC in Breath of the Wild, he steps up to take his father’s place in Tears of the Kingdom as the Sage of Wind.

As a fighter, Tulin will take greatly after his father, most of his movepool pulling from the same moves, though with little additions from his own power set, and overall being lighter and speedier.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Ganon Blight

GANON BLIGHT

As you infiltrate and work through the four Divine Beasts, you will inevitably face the boss of the dungeon, a hulking being made of Malice that uses elemental attacks based on their respective region.

These are the blights: Waterblight Ganon, Fireblight Ganon, Windblight Ganon, and Thunderblight Ganon. These creatures are extensions of Calamity Ganon himself, and were personally responsible for the deaths of the Four Champions.

As fighters, they will be big and powerful, with moves pulled from their boss battles, especially those elemental attacks they use throughout.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Purah

PURAH

If you head to the other lab first, you will find it inhabited by a scientist who has transformed herself into a little girl thanks to an accident.

This is Purah, Impa’s sister, and one of the leading scientists of Hyrule. In Age of Calamity, players will get to meet her in her prime, while by the time of Tears of the Kingdom, she will have reversed the de-aging process, having aged herself up to a mature adult again.

As a fighter, we’ll be breaking her away from her partner Robbie, using instead the tech seen around Hyrule new to Tears of the Kingdom, where she has become the lead scientist of the region.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Wednesday, January 17, 2024

Robbie

ROBBIE

From Impa’s house, you will be directed to seek out two Sheikah scientists. Depending on which direction you go, you will first come across an eccentric old man who tends to play air guitar a lot.

This is Robbie, one of the two leading scientists of Hyrule. He will play an important role in all three Breath of the Wild-related games, especially working together with Purah to become playable in Age of Calamity.

As a fighter, Robbie will draw fully from his Age of Calamity moveset, as most of that set had Robbie doing the fighting with a sawblade apparatus, while Purah stuck close behind him and manipulated the Sheikah Slate.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Paya

PAYA

As you reach Kakariko Village and Impa’s house, you will find a young girl there who looks just like her grandmother in her youth.

This is Paya, Impa’s soft-spoken granddaughter, who develops an immediate crush on Link. She will act as an important NPC throughout both Breath of the Wild games.

As a fighter, she will be an echo of her grandmother, but without as much raw power behind her attacks due to her reticent nature.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Ralis

RALIS

Next on his journey, Link will need the help of the Zora to find the next Fused Shadow. However, their queen Rutela was killed, and the crown prince had fallen ill.

This is Prince Ralis. Due to his parents’ passing and his fear to become king, Ralis slips into a deep depression, until Link, through the guidance of the fallen queen, helps pull him out of it. After this, Ralis becomes the central Zora character of the story.

As a fighter, he will act as an echo of his ancestor Princess Ruto, pulling from her movepool as well as his own. He will probably be a bit slower than Ruto but hit harder.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Darbus

DARBUS

As Link and Midna journey to gather the pieces of the Fused Shadow, they naturally come to Death Mountain and visit the Gorons. While there, they learn that their patriarch has disappeared into the mines, while a monster called Fyrus has started to terrorize them.

Fyrus turns out to indeed be the Goron patriarch, Darbus. After an intense battle, Darbus is freed of the curse placed on him by the shadow and becomes an ally to Link once again, acting as the central Goron character of Twilight Princess.

As a fighter, he will act as an echo of his ancestor Darunia, pulling from the same movepool. He will have a much greater focus on brute strength however, owing to his talent as a wrestler.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Tuesday, January 16, 2024

Korok

KOROK

As Link travels around the islands of the Great Sea, he eventually comes to a forest island where he finds the Great Deku Tree, attended by a race of small wooden creatures.

These creatures are the Koroks, the descendants of the ancient Kokiri. They likewise have since appeared in the Breath of the Wild games, mostly as the “hosts” of a sidequest to find them all.

As fighters, they are small and quick, with lots of nature magic making up their movepool.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Rito

RITO

Another individual Link meets upon his rescue of Tetra is a helpful postman, who appears to be part bird.

This postman is a Rito, a new race in this new oceanic Hyrule, descended from the ancient Zoras. The Ritos live on Dragon Roost Island, and would reappear in the Breath of the Wild continuity.

As fighters, the Ritos will have a strong aerial gameplay style with moves pulling from all of their appearances and the abilities of their sage, Medli.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Tetra's Crew

TETRA'S CREW

After rescuing Tetra, you return her to her crew, made up of a band of rough pirates.

These are Tetra’s crew: Gonzo, Niko, Mako, Zuko, Senza, and Nudge. They act as (mostly) allies to Link as he boards their ship to rescue his sister and stop Ganondorf.

As fighters, they are echoes of Tetra, using the same pirate-based movepool, but with varying stats for each member.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Fierce Deity Link

FIERCE DEITY LINK

At the end of Majora’s Mask, Link enters the moon and finds a number of small children wearing masks, each of whom ask for the sum total of the masks you have collected by the end of the game. If you give them all they want, you will receive a special mask said to be as powerful as the Majora’s Mask itself.

This is the Fierce Deity Mask, which transforms Link into a divine warrior of immense power. This mask gives Link the power he needs to face off against Majora in the final battle.

As a fighter, he will be an echo of Young Link, the mask’s wearer, but with higher stats in nearly every single aspect.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Monday, January 15, 2024

Gerudo

GERUDO

After rescuing nearly all of the sages, Link will travel out to the nearby desert, coming across a fortress filled with warrior women who imprison any man who dares to come near.

These are the Gerudo, a race of warrior women to whom a man in born only once in a hundred years, the most recent being Ganondorf himself. They are deeply protective of their territory, resulting in a xenophobic attitude toward all males except their king. They would likewise become a recurring staple of the series.

As a fighter, they are fast and deadly, using their long spears and lightning in their movesets, acting as echoes to their own resident sage Nabooru.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Phantom Ganon

PHANTOM GANON

Determined to save Hyrule, Link will traverse the Forest Temple to find the first of seven sages. Upon beating the temple’s resident ghosts, he will come face to face with Ganondorf, who will summon a shadowy duplicate of himself to attack.

This is Phantom Ganon, a regular appearance in most Zelda games featuring Ganondorf, often as a boss. It is most remembered for its “tennis match” style battles that it has engaged in on more than one occasion.

As a fighter, it will be similar in stats to Ganondorf, though lacking a bit in raw power. Its moveset will pull from all of its appearances across the series.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

ReDead

REDEAD

Link will emerge from the Temple of Time seven years into the future. Outside, Castle Town will have transformed from a bustling metropolis to an abandoned ruin, filled with slow-moving zombies.

These zombies are known as ReDeads, best remembered for their horrifying screams that stun Link in place and their tendency to latch on to anyone who comes too close. They turn out to be manifestations of dark magic rather than undead bodies.

As fighters, they will be painfully slow, but powerful with high defense and the ability to drain health from their opponents. Their movesets will pull from their own abilities and the abilities of their contemporary Gibdoes.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Goron

GORON

After receiving his quest from Zelda to collect the three sacred stones, Link will head up to Death Mountain, where he will find it inhabited by a race of rock creatures who like to roll around and eat rocks.

These are the Gorons, one of the five races of Hyrule who would soon become staples of all Zelda games following after. They are friendly and like to celebrate, and often welcome Link into their society as a brother.

As fighters, they will be strong and durable, though maybe not so much as their named counterparts. Their moveset will pull from the general abilities and features demonstrated by Gorons throughout the franchise.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Saturday, January 13, 2024

Ingo

INGO

After finding Talon, you’ll be able to visit Lon Lon Ranch, where you’ll find Talon asleep in the barn, Malon tending to the horses, and an angry, bitter man pitching hay.

This is Ingo, a farm hand who loathes his position in life and yearns to take control of the farm from his employer, selling them out to Ganondorf to do so. Ingo is heavily based on Luigi, matching Talon’s appearance.

As a fighter, Ingo will pull from a similar move pool as Malon and Talon, albeit with a few distinctions such as his pitchfork and whip, and the guns used by the bandits of Majora’s Mask that use his same model.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Talon

TALON

Malon will be in search of her father, who has yet to return from making a delivery. Link will agree to search for him, and will find him around the back of Hyrule castle, fast asleep.

This is Talon, the lazy owner and proprietor of Lon Lon Ranch. He bears a heavy resemblance to Mario, and similar characters of the same name or close will appear in multiple subsequent games, often running a similar ranch from which Link can obtain his horse.

As a fighter, Talon will be an echo of his daughter, both making use of the various aspects of their farm. Talon will be much slower and heavier than his daughter, however.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Stalchildren

STALCHILDREN

Upon leaving the Lost Woods, Link will find himself in a huge open plain called Hyrule Field, a hub of sorts that connects all the major Hylian regions. He’ll need to be quick about it, however, as the moment night falls, skeletons will rise from the ground.

These are the Stalchildren, smaller and less powerful skeleton enemies than the more standard Stalfos. They tend to be a recurring hazard in many games during the night cycle, and even act as something of the “standard race” of the Ikana region of Majora’s Mask.

As fighters, they will be echoes of the Stalfos, albeit smaller and weaker in most aspects.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Kokiri

KOKIRI

Ocarina of Time opens with a small fairy being sent to find the “chosen one” meant to save Hyrule. Said fairy flies through the forest, and the audience is treated to a view from her perspective, finding a village deep in the woods filled with small elven people that look like children.

These are the Kokiri, a race of magical beings who tend to the Lost Woods. They took Link in as a baby and raised him as one of their own. They constitute one of the five races inhabiting Hyrule, though they would not recur in any subsequent games.

As fighters, they will be light and nimble, with nature-based powers and moves heavily based on the same pool that Saria draws from.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Friday, January 12, 2024

Queen Oren

QUEEN OREN

When Link visits the Zoras of Hyrule, he discovers that their queen has been mutated into a monstrous form by the theft of a special stone. Upon retrieving the stone, she returns to her true state.

Queen Oren is Link Between Worlds’ Zora representative, later abducted by Yuga and revealed to be one of the seven sages.

As a fighter, she will act as an echo of her fellow Zora royal, Mipha, but with much more power and much less grace behind her moves.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Rosso

ROSSO

North of Hyrule, Link encounters a Goron working in a mine who provides him with the Power Glove.

This is Rosso, our representative Goron character this time around, and eventually revealed to be yet another of the seven sages.

As a fighter, Rosso will function as an echo of fellow Goron and mine worker Yunobo from Breath of the Wild. He will hit a little harder with much more durability from his years of experience.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Irene

IRENE

As Link wanders around Hyrule, he will eventually cross paths with a little witch, the apprentice of a much older sorceress strongly implied to be Maple of the Oracles games.

This is Irene. She will provide you the service of letting you fast-travel around the map on her broom, until she ends up captured by Yuga as well and becomes another of the seven sages, at which point her broom provides the service on its own.

As a fighter, Irene will be an echo of Maple, with her moves pulling from the same pool Maple pulls from, with slightly different stats to vary the master and pupil.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Osfala

OSFALA

As Link sets out on his journey under the guidance of the wise sage Sahasrahla, he is directed to see out the sage’s apprentice.

This apprentice is Osfala. He would prove a great help in your journey before ultimately being captured by Yuga as well, turning out to be another of the seven sages.

As a fighter, Osfala would be an echo of his master, with all him moves pulling from Sahasrahla’s, except younger and spryer in his movements.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Thursday, January 11, 2024

Gulley

GULLEY

A Link Between Worlds opens with Link asleep in his bed, late for work at the local blacksmith shop. His boss and father figure, said blacksmith, will send his young son to go and wake him.

This is Gulley, your standard tagalong kid archetype. At one point, he goes missing in the game, prompting Link to go and search for him, only to find he has been taken by Yuga and transformed into a painting. He is revealed to be one of the game’s seven sages.

As a fighter, Gulley will be fast and full of energy, but without a whole lot of strength behind him. His moveset will pull from his own actions in the game, as well as elements borrowed from his father, the blacksmith.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Gibdo

GIBDO

In some of the later dungeons, the players will also encounter mummies that creep around after Link.

These are the Gibdoes, standard enemies in most desert levels of the series. In the most recent installment, Tears of the Kingdom, they took on a more buglike appearance.

As fighters, they will be slow, with moderate power behind them, but a high level of defense. Their moveset will pull from all across their appearances in the franchise.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Gleeok

GLEEOK

Another boss in another dungeon turns out to be a three-headed dragon breathing fire.

This is the Gleeok, Hyrule’s version of a Hydra. Gleeoks appear frequently throughout the series, most often in the 2D games, often used in games where teamwork is required.

As a fighter, the Gleeok will be large and heavy, with devastatingly powerful moves befitting a boss. Their moveset will pull from all of their major battles, especially their most recent appearance in Tears of the Kingdom.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Zora

ZORA

As you wander the overworld, here and there you will encounter a lake or two. From the water of these lakes, grotesque heads will emerge and spit fire at you.

These are the Zora. Though initially just another monster, they will receive an upgrade in Ocarina of Time, transforming them into a graceful race that dwells in Lake Hylia and a secret kingdom behind a waterfall. Ever since, they have been one of the most recurring standard races of Hyrule.

As fighters, they will be fast and deadly, with striking moves that overwhelm their opponents. Their moveset pulls from all their various appearances in the series, matching the moveset of their member, Mikau.

Likelihood rating: Could happen.

Standard B: Ice Block

The Waterblight Ganon's attack of doing so and sending them at you.

Side B: Fire Axe

The Fireblight Ganon's main melee weapon, with a burning effect.

Up B: Tornado

Windblight Ganon's tornados, except they will spin the Blight into the air in the process.

Thunderblight Ganon's attack where it places an electrified spike that just shoots lightning around.

Final Smash: Malicious Attack

Basically the scenes of them killing the Four Champions, except with whatever fighter they hit when starting the move.

Color Swaps: All four, and then . . . I like a blue variant of that.

22.   Gerudo

23.   Stalchildren

24.   Ganon Blight

Next up, we have the Stalchildren, the smaller skeleton enemies often found rising from wilder areas when night falls. They will be smaller, less powerful echoes of Stalfos.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Head Throw

Their heads are bigger compared to their bodies, maybe that means it would hurt more?

Side B: Magic Shroud

I do believe there are magician versions of these guys too.

Up B: Flying Leap

Definitely wouldn't get as much lift on the jump.

Down B: Stalchild

Hmm, forgot this was a thing. Could change it into a self-defense thing where it falls apart to avoid damage?

Final Smash: Blood Moon

Keep it mostly the same.

Entrance: It will start as a pile of bones before coming together.

Taunts: Up, it will stand up straight and salute. Side, it will put out its arms like a zombie. Down, it will collapse into bones for a second.

Kirby Hat: Their skulls as a hat.

Kart: Made out of bone.

Special Move: They can summon more of their brethren to rise from the track behind you.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Hyrule Field.

Victory Screen: They will stand and salute like soldiers of Ikana.

Color Swaps: Every version of Stalchild across the series, starting with Ocarina's model.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Ganon Blight infests the stage.

4.       Ralis

19.   Zora

20.   Rito

21.   Korok

22.   Gerudo

23.   Stalchildren

24.   Ganon Blight

Next up, we have the Gerudo, a race of warrior women from the desert at the Eastern end on Hyrule. A male is born to their tribe once every hundred years, Ganondorf being that male. In most portrayals, they have an extreme xenophobic attitude, attacking and imprisoning any males who dare approach their fortress, which gameplay-wise, adds a layer of stealth to their portion of the game.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Iron Gauntlets

Based on those used by Nabooru.

Side B: Gerudo Spear

Naturally adept at their use for all models.

Up B: Desert Cyclone

Also, a pretty standard skill.

Down B: Guard

Same, with higher defense than Nabooru herself.

Final Smash: Intruder Detected

Very much the same.

Entrance: They will drop down from the ceiling the way they would in-game.

Taunts: Up, they will raise their spear and pace for a second. Side, they will hold their spear parallel to the ground and threaten with it. Down, they will sit with their legs crossed.

Kirby Hat: Their red ponytails and face masks.

Kart: Their horses.

Special Move: They can throw their spear forward.

Spirit Battle: A horde battle on Gerudo Valley.

Victory Screen: They will stand together and raise their spears to the sky.

Losing Screen: Quicksand will appear under their feet and they will sink.

Color Swaps: Every notably distinct Gerudo model besides the noted players.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Stalchild rises from its grave.
