Wario Ware: D.I.Y.

WARIO WARE: D.I.Y.

It's kinda funny that, when this game first debuted, the acronym D.I.Y. seemed clunky and forced, but now, years later, with the popularity of a bunch of home-and-garden shows all over the place, the term D.I.Y. feels entirely common place. Isn't it fun how that works?

Anyway, Wario Ware: D.I.Y. is a Mario Maker style game that lets you the player create your own Wario Ware microgames rather than the characters. The in-game reason for this is that most of Wario's employees got fed up with Wario's antics and left for a game company that actually pays them (good for them). As a result, Wario got Dr. Crygor and Penny, two of his last remaining employees, to use their Super MakerMatic 2.0 so that the players themselves will make all the games for him.

So, it's kinda difficult to quantify this one, as the bulk of the game would mostly be attributed to the player and not any of the characters, though I suppose the Crygors could take some credit for them, it being their machine and all. The core mechanics of making the games yourself include arranging music, choosing a background, actors to be part of it, write a script, and then paint or stamp items. Wario, Penny, Dr. Crygor, Master Mantis, and Young Cricket mostly act as instructors in various parts of all this. Wario Man does appear, and have his own set of games while he tries to pull bathroom doors open. His games include looting treasure, spitting out garlic, bouncing a ball, dodging traffic, bouncing on his belly, and avoiding bombs.

Those that left for Diamond Software do have their own game sets, being games they made for Diamond. Mona's is set in a remote jungle, where she and Gelato Joe enter a lost temple and explore it. Her's are all "Strange" as they have been before, including smashing cans, breaking bricks, picking a nose, squirting eyedrops, rolling dices, and landing safely from a balloon.

Jimmy's story involves him teaching an aerobics program. His games are all sports related, including using a baseball bat, making a goal, playing golf and ping pong, bowling, jogging, jumping hurdles, playing volleyball, and playing billiards.

Ashley and Red are filming a movie in a forest outside the mansion. Their games are all food-related, including eating popsicles, picking vegetables, frying an egg, milking a cow, shooting grapes, squirting ketchup, and making a sandwich.

Orbulon's story involves his ship getting struck by lightning, leading to him getting stuck in a rocket about to be launched into space. His games are all I.Q. based requiring you to use your brain a bit more than the others, including remembering a certain order, paying a certain amount, matching up shapes, choosing the right path, playing rock-paper-scissors, and arranging numbers.

9-Volt's story is just him playing through a video game, while his games are all Nintendo related. These include Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Starfox, Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, Ice Climber, Yoshi's Island, and Pikmin.

Like Wario Man, Dribble and Spitz, Kat and Ana, and 18-Volt don't technically appear in this game, but in the companion game D.I.Y. Showcase, but I'll cover them here anyway. Dribble and Spitz are competing in a taxi rally competition, with all their games being sci-fi themed. These include assembling a robot, aiming a cannon, protecting the moon, and firing missiles at a spaceship.

Kat and Ana's story involves them soaring through the sky on large hang-gliding capes accompanied by birds. Their games are all nature-themed, finding fish, eating bugs, matching up animals, crossing a river, feeding birds, and grabbing fireflies.

18-Volt's game involves him shooting at Fronks for a high score. His games are also Nintendo-themed, including Mario Bros., Advance Wars, Duck Hunt, Super Mario Kart, Wrecking Crew, Super Mario World, Punch-Out, Donkey Kong Country, Wild Gunman, and Super Mario Advance.

The locations in the game are the standard locations around Diamond City, although some based around the characters' respective games. These include Dr. Crygor's Lab, Temple Explorer, Aerobics Studio, Ashley's Mansion, the Mask Boutique, and Soaring Heights. Of course, a stage based around the Super MakerMatic, similar in vein to the Mario Maker stage, would not go amiss.

So here's what we've got so far:

Wario Ware: Snapped!

WARIO WARE: SNAPPED!

This one won't take me as long. Wario Ware: Snapped! was a small DSiWare game that is basically just a quick little mini version of the regular Wario Ware games mostly using the DS's camera function. The whole game takes place at an amusement park and only Wario, Mona, Jimmy T., and Kat and Ana appear in it.

Wario's games require big movements, including shaking to dry off a dog, sticking your head in a hole, grabbing coins, and pouring water by tilting your head. Mona's games require you to align your body with objects on the screen, including wearing a hat and glasses, eating bread, swatting flies, and getting kissed. Jimmy's games place you in different poses to take snapshots of you for the end, including giving a massage, waving goodbye, playing peekaboo, wearing a ring, and blowing into the microphone. Kat and Ana's games are two-player, requiring you to get cheek to cheek, stack their heads like a totem pole, smash a stone, and wipe the screen.

So here's what we've got so far:

Characters:
Wario: ride motorcycle, work out, trampoline, Tiny Wario, chase with broom, Anything Goes, picking nose, punching, rocket, become Wario Man, shave, eat, stomp, kiss, DS, dentist, eat junk, bad garlic, pop balloons, poke cats, swat flies, chisel statue, form baton, tiny Warios, sautee, shoo flies, giant fan, clear air, sort, parry, yank tablecloth, shake, grab coins, pour water

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves!

WARIO WARE: SMOOTH MOVES!

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves! is the fifth game in the Wario Ware franchise, this game being built around the gimmicks of the Nintendo Wii console system, most of the games being based around moving around the Wiimote and motion controls. All of the characters from the previous games return, alongside a young martial artist named Young Cricket, his master Master Mantis, and Doctor Crygor's granddaughter Penny.

Wario's main story involves him chasing a creature called a Splunk all the way to a mysterious temple wherein he finds the mystical Form Baton (the Wiimote). After escaping from a giant boulder, he then tries to use the baton to make money off of it. His second game involves him getting split into a bunch of tiny Warios by a bike that Penny invented, the swarm of Wario's eating a bunch of strawberries, before coming back together and being chased back to the temple and forced to return the baton. His games are all a general mix to get you used to playing the game. These include sauteing vegetables, shaving, shooing flies, and blowing down enemies with a fan. His Mini-Warios games are also a wide mix to test your abilities at the end of the game. These include punching, clearing the air, sorting things, parrying with a sword, and yanking a tablecloth.

Mona's story involves her leading a cheerleading squad at her high school's football game, with one of the football players having a crush on her and gaining motivation to win the game because of it. Her games involve using the Wiimote like a cheerleading baton, focusing on your form with it. These games include swatting a fly, balancing on a ball, drinking water, saving a person from falling, yanking a nose hair, and guiding people to their respective restrooms.

Kat and Ana's story involves them defending their dojo from a giant ogre, using their swords and ninja power to turn into turtles as they do so. They're games require you to use your Wiimote like a sword and use it quickly. Their games include shaving sheep, flying a paper airplane, cooking meat, slicing wood, inserting dentures, and throwing darts.

Young Cricket and Master Mantis's story features them traveling to Diamond City and seeing a stand selling dumplings run by Mona. Young Cricket runs over the heads of those in line to get some only to be forced back to the end. He's also shown in a montage punching, doing a handstand, balancing on a pole, kicking, and flipping during his training. Their games require you to hold a stance rather than moving. These games include vacuuming, balancing a broom, curling, sawing a log, collecting apples, skiing, hitting a volleyball, and keeping a stack balanced.

Jimmy T.'s story involves him giving a cat an umbrella to protect him from the rain, leading to a group of cats following him to the club and dancing with him. His games are all a remix to refresh your skills, most of them being moves from the previous set of games. We're later introduced to Jimmy P., a hawaiian-style lookalike of Jimmy T. who gives a dog a bone, leading to him getting a group of dogs to dance with him. His games are also remixes of previous games.

Ashley's story involves her and Red trying to create a monster plant using her spell book. After a brief failure, they succeed and create a plant so big it breaks their mansion. Ashley also uses Red as a magic wand. She also flies on a broom briefly. Her games feature you using the Wiimote like a wand, spinning it like you're casting a spell. These include woodcarving, picking a card, playing pool, shaking a spray can, jumping rope, shooting cans, and rolling dice.

Dribble and Spitz's story feature them giving a taxi ride to a woman to the top of a hill, where she is then revealed to be an alien and leaves in a UFO. Their games involve you holding the Wiimote like a steering wheel. The games include abducting a cow, slicing an orange, pouring sugar, whacking with a stick, playing ping pong, arm wrestling, and running an obstacle course.

Penny's story features her competing in an invent-off against her grandfather, building a new bike for Wario. She also has a jetpack like her grandfather. Her games involve you using the Wiimote like a wrench, turning it slightly. These include hammering a nail, turning a key, using a magnifying glass, tuning a radio, playing whack-a-mole, sharpening a pencil, grinding seasoning, winding up a toy, and fighting with a sword.

9-Volt and 18-Volt's story features them getting in a fight after 18-Volt accidentally break's 9-Volt's game & watch game. 18-Volt then heads out to the toy store to get him a new one to make up for it. (This one is freaking adorable and heartwarming by the way). Their games as always are based on old Nintendo games. This time, they include Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Nintendogs, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, the Wii in general, Balloon Fight, Baseball, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Paint, Sketch Artist, Punch Out, the SNES, Metroid Prime, and Starfox.

Orbulon's story features him crashlanding inside the Form Baton temple from before and coming across a mysterious balance stone. His games feature both the Wiimote and Nunchuck. These include making a bridge, raising a flag, matching numbers, matching time, pedaling, and using maracas.

Finally, Doctor Crygor's story features his new invention, the Kelorometer, capable of slimming down anything. His games all have a fitness bent to them. The games include sawing wood, deflecting watermelons, shaking a bottle, scrubbing a ship, and so on, mostly games from old levels, just geared to help with exercise.

Mike appears in both Penny's and Doctor Crygor's stories, and Ken the Reporter and Gelato Joe also appear.

The locations in the game are pretty basic Diamond City locations, with the Form Baton Temple being a new one, and then featuring the Diamond City Stadium, the Shogun's Castle, Club Sugar, Diamond Academy, Diamond Taxi, Tomorrow Hill, 9-Volt's House, Toy Express, Club Spice, and Ashley's Mansion.

I guess the form baton and the balance stone can count as items.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover the series's next title, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves!

Wario Ware: Touched!

WARIO WARE: TOUCHED!

Wario Ware: Touched! is the fourth game in the Wario Ware series built on the gimmick of the DS's touch screen. It is also notable for introducing one of the series' most popular characters, the young witch Ashley. The game follows the standard formula of each character having their own framing story with an assortment of microgames attached.

Wario's main story starts with him dropping a Game Boy Advance into a sewer, only for it to be retrieved by an angelic sewer guru alongside a DS, prompting Wario to make the new game. Then his own framing story involves him getting cavities and having to go to the dentist, only to eat junk immediately after and have to go back. This story's games act as a tutorial level, demonstrating the general principles of the gameplay, popping balloons, poking cats, swatting flies, and chiseling rock into a statue with the stylus. In the ending story, he eats some REALLY bad garlic that somehow turns him into Wario Man, giving him enhanced strength, speed, and flying powers. His games are a grand mix of all of them. One I like is a game where he gets to punch out Mario.

In Mona's story, she and her band, Art and Decko, have become a #1 hit, ousting the previous superstar Vanessa from the top spot. On her way to a gig, Vanessa attacks with a hawk mech. Mona, her animal friends and her bandmates all work to fight them off. All of her games require dragging the stylus across the screen, such as slicing fruit, pulling party poppers, and unraveling toilet paper.

Jimmy T's story involves him dancing with his parents again, as well as his brother James and sister Jamie, until a bug crawls into his afro and he has to scratch to get it out. All of his games involve rubbing quickly on the screen with the stylus. These include erasing a chalkboard, petting a dog, tickling an opponent, rocking out, cleaning a window, and waving goodbye. His family all run the remixes.

Kat and Ana's story involves them tracking down a banana thief with their dog and falcon, only to find that the thief was a monkey they name Numchuck. Their games all involve drawing or scribbling in some way. These include squeezing out a packet of ketchup, hooking up a couple, painting nails, connecting the dots, drawing a mustache, tracing Japanese kanji, and threading a needle.

Ashley is a brand new character to the series, a young witch who lives in a haunted mansion with her devil companion Red. In their story, they are brewing a potion and end up ruining it, before coming across Orbulon, who Ashley realizes is the missing ingredient and red tries to catch him. Their games involve dragging things across the screen. This includes lighting candles, putting a corral around sheep, causing a sneeze, extinguishing a fire, striking a match, catching fish with a net, and firing lasers.

Doctor Crygor's story involves him using a new invention to restore an apple core back to a full apple, before hopping into it himself and accidentally becoming half-apple. His games all involve drawing a circle in some way, including spinning a wheel, reeling in a fishing line, rolling a snowball, tuning a radio, setting a clock, throwing a shot putt, and eating a donut.

Mike is another new character, a karaoke robot built by Doctor Crygor. He is set to do chores initially, including blowing away dust in the lab, before he flies off to host a karaoke competition on the alien bunny planet. His games all involve blowing into the DS's microphone in some way, including sweet talking, spinning a pinwheel, blowing bubbles, inflating a balloon, and spreading a dandelion.

9-Volt and 18-Volt's story involves them buying a brand-new game and then going home to play it late into the night. His games are based on old Nintendo games, as per usual, this time including Super Mario Bros., Zelda II, Metroid, Game & Watch's juggling game and oil panic, Duck Hunt, Space Invaders, and Hogan's Alley.

Orbulon, Dribble, and Spitz all appear in the game, but they do not have stories this time, Ashley and Mike taking up their slots. Orbulon crash-lands and is chased by Ashley and Red, and Dribble and Spitz pick up Mike for Dr. Crygor in their taxi. Ken the Reporter and Gelato Joe appear as well.

The game's locations include the standard Diamond City layout, with Wario's house, the Dental clinic, a restaurant called the Sweet Spot, Mona's gig location The Hawt House, Club Sugar, Diamond Broadcasting System, Mona Pizza, Dr. Crygor's lab, Kat and Ana's house, Ashley's mansion, and the Toy Express toy store.

Wario Ware: Twisted!

WARIO WARE: TWISTED!

Wario Ware: Twisted! is the third game in the Wario Ware series, designed specifically for the gimmicks of the Game Boy Advanced, with most games centering on being able to turn the game in some way. All ten cast members from the previous games, with Wario gaining a new form in Wario Man, 9-Volt gaining a new best friend in 18-Volt, and Jimmy being joined by his mother and father on the dance floor.

Wario has two framing stories, one at the beginning and one at the end. In the first, he chases around a rat and ends up getting shrunken and multiplied inside a watch. In the ending frame story, he ends up inside one of Doctor Crygor's machines that then turns him into Wario Man. As Wario Man, he can fly and is generally stronger. He then jumps back into the machine and turns it into a rocket that then launches itself into the sky before being shot down by one of Orbulon's ships. His games in both tend to be a wide, general mix of games to first get you used to them and second to give you a big final test. Some of these include shaving, eating, stomping, kissing, flying to treasure, grabbing money, dodging poop, and so on.

Mona's story features her driving on her moped to deliver a pizza, while a rival pizza company, Pizza Dinosaur, tries to sabotage her by attacking her with a giant dinosaur. Her monkey, pig, and elephant all return using their same attacks to take out the dinosaur. Her games all revolve spinning the game console just slightly, including spinning a pizza to appy toppings, aiming a dodge ball, turning a cake to blow out its candles, balancing an umbrella, ironing a shirt, avoiding meteors, and flying her paper airplane.

Jimmy T. is back at it disco dancing once again, accompanied this time by his parents. They also spend a bunch of time messing with their new cellphones. His games are all based around spinning the console a lot. These include dunking a basketball, scrubbing a plate, catching a butterfly, doing a sit up, focusing a camera, climb stairs, and shine a spotlight on him or his parents. His parents also cover the remix levels for him.

Kat and Ana's framing story involves them going on a field trip with their dog and falcon. Kat accidentally disturbs a beehive, leading them to being chased into a cave and being confronted by a troll. Their games all involve simply tapping the A button. These include running from the bees, doing the wave, popping a bubble, punching a water droplet, popping a balloon, skewering kebabs, and picking noses.

During Dribble and Spitz's story, they drive their taxi down the interstate before it breaks down. After fixing it up, the taxi becomes rocket-powered and launches them into space, where they pick up an alien passenger and take him to Club Sugar. Their games are all based around both spinning your device and pressing A, a mix of the previous games. These include adjusting the radio, eating watermelon, pounding a nail, riding a ferris wheel, pounding drums, playing whack-a-mole, and taking a picture.

Doctor Crygor's story involves him creating a new invention called the gravitator, which then spews soap bubbles and traps him inside. Later he turns it into a flying mech and flies around inside of it. His games involve tipping the system, affecting the gravity, if you will. Some of these games involve sliding a cup, shaking out ice cream, dropping a ball, removing a key, lighting a candle, and pouring water.

Orbulon's story features him falling asleep while flying his ship, waking up to find himself being sucked into a black hole. He has to pilot the ship away from the hole only to be eaten by a living planet and spat back out to Earth. His games all feature extra time, requiring you to take your time to do them correctly. These games include unscrambling items, avoiding popping a bubble, filling a cup adequately, identifying items, cutting exact slices, remembering a card, following a path, and lowering and raising bridges to let people pass.

9-Volt's story involves him meeting 18-Volt, who is either a very large elementary student or a teenager who's been held back a lot. They bond over their shared tastes in music and games and return to 9-Volt's house for a jam session. As before, 9-Volt's games are all based on Nintendo games, including Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, Wrecking Crew, Tennis, Donkey Kong Jr., Excitebike, Kid Icarus, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Ice Hockey, Mach Rider, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Country 3, and Super Mario Bros.

Mona's boss Joe and Ken the Reporter also appear in the game, as well as 9-Volt's mother, 5-Volt.

The game's locations are all standard locations around Diamond City, including Wario's house, Club Sugar, Mona Pizza, Diamond Knoll, Interstate 310, Doctor Crygor's lab, Diamond City Elementary, 9-Volt's house, and Diamond City Broadcasting.

So here's what we've got so far:

Wario Ware Inc.: Mega Party Game$

WARIO WARE INC.: MEGA PARTY GAME$

Not as much to say for this one. In some ways, Party Games more just the console version of Microgame's handheld game. It features all the same characters, and most of the same basic games, just with more features and designed for a console game, making it different enough that I can't quite call it a port and consider it more its own game. This game is also notable for being one of the few Wario Ware games without framing stories for the characters.

So, once again, our game designers are Wario, Jimmy T., Mona, Kat & Ana, 9-Volt, Dribble & Spitz, Doctor Crygor, and Orbulon, each with the same general types of games. Wario has a mix of all as he normally does, both as the tutorial and then as the big finish. Jimmy's are all sports-themed, with a medicine ball, swimming, volleyball, snowboarding, and gymnastics added on. Dribble and Spitz's games are all sci-fi related with robots and spaceships and aliens and such. Mona's are all "strange" with a lot of them simply being everyday mundane activities like squirting eyedrops, twirling spaghetti, and threading a needle. 9-Volt's games are all based on Nintendo games, including Hogan's Alley, Game & Watch games, Ice Climber, and the Legend of Zelda. Orbulon's all require some brain power to figure out, with matching and memory games and so on. Dr. Crygor's use realistic images and don't have as much food as before, with new ones like crashing cymbals and dodging traffic. Finally, Kat and Ana's are all nature related with animals and plants appearing. This can include watering plants, swatting a mosquito, and marching with penguins.

That's about all there is to say with this one that hasn't been said for the previous game.

So here's what we've got so far:

Characters:
Wario: ride motorcycle, work out, trampoline, Tiny Wario, Anything Goes, picking nose, punching, rocket.
Jimmy T.: disco dance, sports, remix, unicycle, golf, jump rope, ski, hurdles, basketball, catch, goalie, skateboard, trampoline, boxing, medicine ball, swim, volleyball, snowboarding, gymnastics.

Kat & Ana: bird, dog, katana, shuriken, dog sword, nature, catching fish, dodging sharks, catching a stick, squirrel picture, vegetables, catching fruit, protecting a cat, water plants, swat mosquito, march with penguins.
9-Volt: hoverboard, DJ, Nintendo, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, F-Zero, Stack Up, Legend of Zelda, flyswatter, Metroid, Mario Clash, Wild Gunman, Hogan's Alley, Game & Watch, Ice Climber.

Wario Ware Inc.: Mega Microgame$

WARIO WARE INC.: MEGA MICROGAME$

So, this is a bit of a difficult franchise to approach here. The series has a whole cast of iconic and loveable characters starring in it, but very VERY little of the game's actual gameplay is based on them. That said, over the course of the eight games in the series, nearly all of the main game hosts managed to pull off getting in, both through the things they do in their framing device stories and in the few microgames that are directly tied to them, but I'm still uncertain about how to approach actually laying it out in this series's context.

Wario being Wario, he decided he wants to make a bunch of money by selling video games, but doesn't want to put in the effort to actually make the games, so he creates a bunch of games that require the least amount of effort possible, and hires a bunch of people from around Diamond City where he lives to do the work of making them. These employees include local pizza girl Mona, disco enthusiast Jimmy T., taxi drivers Dribble and Spitz, kindergarten-age ninjas Kat and Ana, video game nerd 9-Volt, mad scientist Doctor Crygor, and alien invader Orbulon.

Each of these characters have both a framing-device story and a series of microgames built around a general theme. Wario's stories include him working out and bouncing on a trampoline only to get himself shrunken to Tiny Wario. He also later tries to skimp on paying his employees by escaping on a rocket but ends up falling into the ocean with the cash instead. All of his microgames are Anything Goes, meaning they're a general collection of games from all over the other characters' game types. A few are directly tied to him, like riding his motorcycle, picking his nose, lifting weights, and punching strongly.

Jimmy T., the disco lover, has probably the least to work with in terms of his framing story, as it's mostly just him dancing in the night club, though a moveset based on disco dance moves might be fun. Jimmy has two different types of gamesets, his own being a sports mix while his return appearances are both remixes of previous gamesets. His sports mix of games includes balancing on a unicycle, putting a golf ball, jumping rope, skiing, jumping hurdles, shooting a basketball, catching a ball, acting as a goalie, jumping on a skateboard, bouncing on a trampoline, and boxing.

Mona, the pizza girl most probably remember for her surprising crush on Wario of all people, is featured in a framing story being late to work at a gelateria and rushing to work on her moped. While trying to get there, she is pursued by cops while her three pets try to shake them off of her. These pets include an elephant throwing sludge at the road, a piggy kicking a soccer ball, and a chimp throwing bananas. Her gameset is listed as "strange," although most of it seemed to me like part of her morning ritual as she's rushing to work, including brushing her teeth, catching toast, frying eggs, picking her nose, squirting an eyedrop, and so on. Her main "boss" at the end is flying a paper airplane through a course.

Dribble and Spitz are a pair of taxi drivers known for picking up some unusual customers, their charge this time around being a mermaid they have to get to the coast. Their gameset is sci-fi themed, with a bunch of games including shooting alien fighters, avoiding meteors, assembling a robot, firing at a spaceship, shooting at freaking Mars, dodging lasers, with a bullet hell style level as the "boss" fight.

In Kat and Ana's framing story, a prince named after the player has been captured by a demon named Boneheads, with Ana failing to protect him. She sends a sparrow to seek help from Kat who then rushes the castle with her dog, the dog turning into a sword at the end to take down Boneheads. Their gameset is all nature-themed, with games like catching a fish, dodging a shark, catching a stick, taking a picture of a squirrel, picking vegetables, catching fruit, protecting a cat, and so on.

9-Volt, the Nintendo nerd, skates around on a hoverboard in his framing device and acts as a DJ. His games are all based on old Nintendo games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, F-Zero, Stack Up, Legend of Zelda, the flyswatter from Mario Paint, Metroid, Mario Clash, and Wild Gunman, among others.

Dr. Crygor's story involves him creating and ingesting a secret formula, only for it to give him diarrhea and forcing him to run to the restroom. He also can fly on a jetpack as shown at the very end. His moves are all "reality" based using actual photographs, and include eating a banana, cutting a steak, eating an apple, bouncing a watermelon, squeezing peas from a pod, and decorating a cake. Hmm, that sounds more food-based than anything, but whatever.

Finally we have Orbulon's story, where his spaceship is hit by a meteor and he has to be helped out by a group of space bunnies, whose ship he attempts to hijack. His games are all I.Q. based, meaning the player has to think a bit to do it right. These include matching games, counting games, copying dance moves correctly, finding a hidden item, weighing items, and so on.

Non-"playable" characters in the game include Mona's boss Gelato Joe, and a local reporter named Ken. We also have Boneheads, the demon Kat fights in her story, who mostly attacks with ghostly fire. Then there are the space bunnies, the merperson, 9-Volt's pet Fronk, and so on.

As for stages, we have a number of locations all around Diamond City, including Wario's house, Club Sugar where Jimmy T. dances, Diamond Taxi where Dribble and Spitz work, the Gelateria Mona works at, Diamond Elementary and 9-Volt's house, Orbulon's spaceship, Doctor Crygor's lab, the Prince's castle, and of course, the poorly drawn waiting room for the games that has already become a Smash stage in its own right.

So here's what we've got so far:

Characters:
Wario: ride motorcycle, work out, trampoline, Tiny Wario, Anything Goes, picking nose, punching, rocket.
Jimmy T.: disco dance, sports, remix, unicycle, golf, jump rope, ski, hurdles, basketball, catch, goalie, skateboard, trampoline, boxing.
Mona: moped, elephant, piggy, chimp, strange, brushing teeth, catching toast, frying eggs, picking nose, eyedrop, paper airplane.
Dribble & Spitz: drive taxi, scifi, shooting aliens, dodging meteors, assembling robot, fighting spaceship, shooting Mars, dodging lasers, bullet hell
Kat & Ana: bird, dog, katana, shuriken, dog sword, nature, catching fish, dodging sharks, catching a stick, squirrel picture, vegetables, catching fruit, protecting a cat.
9-Volt: hoverboard, DJ, Nintendo, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, F-Zero, Stack Up, Legend of Zelda, flyswatter, Metroid, Mario Clash, Wild Gunman.
Dr. Crygor: secret formula, bathroom, jetpack, reality, banana, apple, steak, watermelon, peas, cake.

Character Sheet: The Shake King (Wario Miscellaneous)

THE SHAKE KING

It's time to cover the Wario characters. We will be making a new roster for Wario, although it will not be populated by the most iconic of Wario characters quite yet. We may also get some new additions to the Mario rosters. Here's who were working with this time around:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Luigi (Revision)
3. Princess Peach (Revision)
4. Toad (Revision)
5. Wario (Revision)
6. Captain Syrup (Revision)
7. Birdo (Revision)
8. Yoshi (Revision)
9. Wanda
10. Count Cannoli
11. Carpaccio
12. Terrormisu
13. The Shake King

Let's finish off with the Shake King, the villain of Wario Land: Shake It!. The Shake King is an evil pirate king who has captured and enslaved a race of fairies called Merfles in order to obtain their magical bag of unending treasure. Wario is called in by Captain Syrup and the escaped Merfles to help bring him down. As he is one of the main unique characters of the game, he also functions well as the game's gimmick rep.

First off, the Shake King himself shows the same ability as Wario to grab and shake objects and enemies hard enough to shake a bunch of coins loose. He also jumps and slams and charges with his shoulder. He can throw a line of fireballs and a lightning bolt, create a shockwave, shoot an energy beam, and smash through the floor. The unique gimmicks of the game itself also include being able to throw the shaken enemies against the wall after shaking them, getting launched forward at top speed, spinning on a bar to get higher, using a submarine and a punching-glove car, and flying around inside of a rocket cauldron. I think all of this can work very well.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Shake It!
The Shake King will grab and enemy and shake them violently, sending a bunch of coins flying everywhere. If pressed again, he will then throw the enemy away at top speed.

Side B: Blast Forward
This one is based on the second half of each level, where Wario is launched forward at top speed from a special device. That device will appear around the Shake King and then blast him at top speed across the screen. The player will have to be careful though.

Up B: Rocket Cauldron
Although the spinning bar might work too, I felt the rocket cauldron worked even better, carrying him up higher, with a slight downward damage from the flames.

Down B: Earthquake
This one is based on when the Shake King breaks through the floor in his boss battle. He will jump and punch his fist into the ground, creating a cosmetic crack in the ground and shaking the stage slightly.

Final Smash: Shakedown
This one's a bit unique. But I thought he could grow to gigantic proportions in the background, grab the edges of the stage and shake it violently with all of his might, sending all the players flying.

Entrance: Either he could step outside of the devil-looking things at the beginning of the stage, or he could do the swirl through the telescope that Wario uses to enter the globe.

Taunt: pulling out a dizzy enemy and shaking it to see if there's anything left. Maybe some of his taunts from the game.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's revise our rosters!

Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Character Sheet: Terrormisu (Wario Miscellaneous)

TERRORMISU

It's time to cover the Wario characters. We will be making a new roster for Wario, although it will not be populated by the most iconic of Wario characters quite yet. We may also get some new additions to the Mario rosters. Here's who were working with this time around:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Luigi (Revision)
3. Princess Peach (Revision)
4. Toad (Revision)
5. Wario (Revision)
6. Captain Syrup (Revision)
7. Birdo (Revision)
8. Yoshi (Revision)
9. Wanda
10. Count Cannoli
11. Carpaccio
12. Terrormisu
13. The Shake King

Terrormisu is a powerful demon from another world and the main villain of Wario: Master of Disguise. She first presents herself to Wario as a young maiden named Tiaramisu in order to manipulate Wario into releasing her from the prison the Cannoli and Carpaccio family's had guarded for generations. Once the seal is broken, she shows her true colors, forcing Wario, Count Cannoli, and Carpaccio to work together to stop her.

In her boss battle, she cycles through multiple different forms, each of which has different abilities attached to it. Her "sad" form shoots blue energy orbs at Wario and fills up the stage with her tears. Her "happy" form will shoot crescent-shaped beams at Wario, and her "angry" form throws up waves of fire at you. Outside of the battle, she can also float in the air and throw lightning at her enemies.

Here's what I came up with:

Standard B: Lightning
This one is based upon the lightning she strikes Carpaccio with just before her boss battle. She will summon up lightning in her hand and blast her opponent with it.

Side B: Angry Fire
This one is based on her "angry" form somewhat. She will thrust her arm forward and a wave of fire will cross the stage before her, burning any in its path.

Up B: Float
This one's pretty simple. She will float upwards the way she does when she reveals her true colors.

Down B: Sad Orbs
She will produce a circle of the energy orbs used in her "sad" form, that will encircle her and then move outward slowly. One of the orbs will flash red, and if an opponent manages to hit that one, Terrormisu will take damage herself.

Final Smash: Demon Masks
This one has three different forms. Basically at the start, she will pull out either her happy, sad, or angry mask, put it on, and the opponents will be trapped in the boss fight for that form. The Angry Mask will be full of fire and burn the opponents. The Sad Form will fill up with tears and drown them. The Happy Form will have her masks popping in and out of the holes as spikes thrust out from the floor and ceiling.

Entrance: She will run onstage with her fan over her face, shouting "M'Lord!"

Taunts: Fluttering her fan over her face, briefly revealing her demonic side, so on.

Character Sheet: Carpaccio (Wario Miscellaneous)

CARPACCIO

It's time to cover the Wario characters. We will be making a new roster for Wario, although it will not be populated by the most iconic of Wario characters quite yet. We may also get some new additions to the Mario rosters. Here's who were working with this time around:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Luigi (Revision)
3. Princess Peach (Revision)
4. Toad (Revision)
5. Wario (Revision)
6. Captain Syrup (Revision)
7. Birdo (Revision)
8. Yoshi (Revision)
9. Wanda
10. Count Cannoli
11. Carpaccio
12. Terrormisu
13. The Shake King

Today, let's cover Carpaccio, a supporting character from Wario: Master of Disguise. Carpaccio is a . . . um, I'm not sure he's a phantom thief per se. He's involved with all that in some way, but he's more concerned with setting traps and using technology than stealing stuff. Either way, his family is one of the two working to keep Terrormisu trapped within her prison, and he acts as a second rival to Wario alongside Count Cannoli.

At a first glance, Carpaccio doesn't seem to do much. He's more flashy than physical, with one battle against him involving him turning into a giant ice bubble, which lends itself more to a Final Smash or Boss Battle than a solo character, while his second major battle features an obstacle course, where he basically just walks along a straight track while Wario has to go through all kinds of trouble. However, you do have to factor in all those traps of his, as well as the robotic knights who work for him, and bring it all together into one.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Snow Globe
This move is based upon his main boss battle and is one of the few he does himself personally. He will not take the Snow Globe form, but will simply extend his hand and shoot out a freezing cloud of ice to freeze his enemies.

Side B: Sir Lance-a-Lot
This one is based on the main enemies that serve Carpaccio. One of the Sir Lance-a-Lots will appear before Carpaccio and will charge forward with its lance out, somewhat similar to Zelda's suit of armor move.

Up B: Sir Hop-a-Lot
This one is based on the version of Sir Lance-a-Lot that hops around on pogo sticks, except that this time, no knight will appear and Carpaccio will simply whip out the pogo stick and bounce on it himself, getting moderate air.

Down B: Force Field
This move is based on the traps frequently used throughout his levels, specifically the electric force fields that keep Wario from progressing. Basically it will act as a basic shield move, projecting the force field in front of him, but with an electrocution effect for anyone that touches it.

Final Smash: Head Honcho Carpaccio
This move is based on his boss battle in the game, where he turns into a giant Snow Globe, at which point he will first freeze the entire level and then suck everything in like a vacuum.

Entrance: He jumps on screen and poses.

Taunt: I feel like he should be like Snake and have the same taunt for every direction: he does his signature pose with his shades gleaming.

Character Sheet: Count Cannoli (Wario Miscellaneous)

COUNT CANNOLI

It's time to cover the Wario characters. We will be making a new roster for Wario, although it will not be populated by the most iconic of Wario characters quite yet. We may also get some new additions to the Mario rosters. Here's who were working with this time around:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Luigi (Revision)
3. Princess Peach (Revision)
4. Toad (Revision)
5. Wario (Revision)
6. Captain Syrup (Revision)
7. Birdo (Revision)
8. Yoshi (Revision)
9. Wanda
10. Count Cannoli
11. Carpaccio
12. Terrormisu
13. The Shake King

Count Cannoli is the true hero of Wario: Master of Disguise. He is the descendant of a long line of Phantom Thieves dedicated to stealing from the wealthy and corrupt while also charged with protecting the seal on the evil demon Terrormisu. That all comes crashing to a halt one day, when Wario happens to watch five minutes of his TV show, decides he can't stand a fictional character stealing a bunch of fictional treasure he can't have, and literally invents a device to teleport into their fictional world, steal his family's magic wand, and take all the treasure for himself. Considering all of Wario's powers in the game come from Cannoli's wand, I think it's fair to say that Cannoli works well as the gimmick rep of the whole game.

So first for his moves, we have the multiple costumes created by Goodstyle the wand for Wario. We have the basic thief costume, a cosmic costume that can shoot lasers and jump higher, a genius costume that can see invisible items and has an extendable punching glove, an arty costume that can create blocks out of thin air, a sparky costume that shoots off electricity, a captain costume that can drive a boat or submarine through water, a dragon costume that breathes fire, and a "wicked" costume that lets him fly. During his other appearances in the game, he frequently enters on a giant balloon creature and pilots mechs that drop bombs, attack with drill, and attack with giant fists of maces. I think we have enough to work with.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Cosmic Laser
This one is based on the Cosmic Wario costume, as Goodstyle will draw the laser from the costume into his hand and he will fire it. The beam will then bounce around the stage the way it does in the game.

Side B: Genius Glove
This one is based on the Genius Wario costume. Goodstyle will draw the punching glove on his chest, which will then extend out across the stage in front of him and deck any characters in front of him.

Up B: Balloon Creature
This one is a bit more unique to Cannoli himself. I could have gone for the Wicked Wario costume, but I felt this fit a bit more for him. Cannoli's balloon creature will appear above him and lift him into the air before eventually dropping him out of exhaustion.

Down B: Arty Block
This one is based on the Arty Wario costume in the game. Goodstyle will draw the canvas before Cannoli, who will then draw a block that will then appear in the air some distance away before slamming down to the ground below. This block will linger for a short time and can be used as a platform.

Final Smash: Mad Hat Mk III
Count Cannoli's giant mech, specifically the third iteration of the machine, though with moves borrowed from the previous two. The mech will move back and forth across the screen, dropping bombs and attacking with the drills and mace fists.

Entrance: He will enter as he always enters, carried by his balloon creature.

Taunts: Whipping his cape around himself, Goodstyle twirling around him, pulling at his mustache, so on.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover his ally/rival Carpaccio!
