Wario Ware: D.I.Y.

WARIO WARE: D.I.Y.

It's kinda funny that, when this game first debuted, the acronym D.I.Y. seemed clunky and forced, but now, years later, with the popularity of a bunch of home-and-garden shows all over the place, the term D.I.Y. feels entirely common place. Isn't it fun how that works?

Anyway, Wario Ware: D.I.Y. is a Mario Maker style game that lets you the player create your own Wario Ware microgames rather than the characters. The in-game reason for this is that most of Wario's employees got fed up with Wario's antics and left for a game company that actually pays them (good for them). As a result, Wario got Dr. Crygor and Penny, two of his last remaining employees, to use their Super MakerMatic 2.0 so that the players themselves will make all the games for him.

So, it's kinda difficult to quantify this one, as the bulk of the game would mostly be attributed to the player and not any of the characters, though I suppose the Crygors could take some credit for them, it being their machine and all. The core mechanics of making the games yourself include arranging music, choosing a background, actors to be part of it, write a script, and then paint or stamp items. Wario, Penny, Dr. Crygor, Master Mantis, and Young Cricket mostly act as instructors in various parts of all this. Wario Man does appear, and have his own set of games while he tries to pull bathroom doors open. His games include looting treasure, spitting out garlic, bouncing a ball, dodging traffic, bouncing on his belly, and avoiding bombs.

Those that left for Diamond Software do have their own game sets, being games they made for Diamond. Mona's is set in a remote jungle, where she and Gelato Joe enter a lost temple and explore it. Her's are all "Strange" as they have been before, including smashing cans, breaking bricks, picking a nose, squirting eyedrops, rolling dices, and landing safely from a balloon.

Jimmy's story involves him teaching an aerobics program. His games are all sports related, including using a baseball bat, making a goal, playing golf and ping pong, bowling, jogging, jumping hurdles, playing volleyball, and playing billiards.

Ashley and Red are filming a movie in a forest outside the mansion. Their games are all food-related, including eating popsicles, picking vegetables, frying an egg, milking a cow, shooting grapes, squirting ketchup, and making a sandwich.

Orbulon's story involves his ship getting struck by lightning, leading to him getting stuck in a rocket about to be launched into space. His games are all I.Q. based requiring you to use your brain a bit more than the others, including remembering a certain order, paying a certain amount, matching up shapes, choosing the right path, playing rock-paper-scissors, and arranging numbers.

9-Volt's story is just him playing through a video game, while his games are all Nintendo related. These include Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Starfox, Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, Ice Climber, Yoshi's Island, and Pikmin.

Like Wario Man, Dribble and Spitz, Kat and Ana, and 18-Volt don't technically appear in this game, but in the companion game D.I.Y. Showcase, but I'll cover them here anyway. Dribble and Spitz are competing in a taxi rally competition, with all their games being sci-fi themed. These include assembling a robot, aiming a cannon, protecting the moon, and firing missiles at a spaceship.

Kat and Ana's story involves them soaring through the sky on large hang-gliding capes accompanied by birds. Their games are all nature-themed, finding fish, eating bugs, matching up animals, crossing a river, feeding birds, and grabbing fireflies.

18-Volt's game involves him shooting at Fronks for a high score. His games are also Nintendo-themed, including Mario Bros., Advance Wars, Duck Hunt, Super Mario Kart, Wrecking Crew, Super Mario World, Punch-Out, Donkey Kong Country, Wild Gunman, and Super Mario Advance.

The locations in the game are the standard locations around Diamond City, although some based around the characters' respective games. These include Dr. Crygor's Lab, Temple Explorer, Aerobics Studio, Ashley's Mansion, the Mask Boutique, and Soaring Heights. Of course, a stage based around the Super MakerMatic, similar in vein to the Mario Maker stage, would not go amiss.
