Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

In the end, Kirby defeats King Dedede and restores the Star Rod, learning the awful truth: that an evil being had been trying to spill into Dream Land and fill it with bad dreams, and King Dedede had been striving to stop him.

This is Nightmare, the true villain of Kirby’s Adventure, its remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and the anime as EnEmEe, a shadowy being that can absorb most attacks and spreads darkness everywhere.

As a fighter, Nightmare will have excellent defense and high power, with some good aerials to boot. His moveset will pull from all of his various boss battles.

Likelihood rating: Strong

Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Season Four

KIRBY: RIGHT BACK AT YA!

Next up, we have the final season of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! where we saw the final battle against Nightmare Enterprises and the debut of the Battleship Halberd. Kirby gained the abilities Paint, Wing, Throw, Baton, Water, Iron, and Top during this season, and used the Star Rod in the final battle. Gus the Mechanic gained a bit when we learned that he used to be a member of a biker gang and had to run a race against his old boss. We also learn that Melman the Mailman used to be a legendary biker. Gus may have gotten enough during that episode, and Melman could now easily be an echo.

Other allies include the debut of Bonkers, Chef Kawasaki's old buddy Chef Nagoya, and a robot duplicate of Escargoon called Escar-droid, who could pour tea and give massages, and later fly, shoot missiles, and attack with swords when King Dedede alters it. King Dedede's monsters include: Paint Roller; Red Viper, who could punch, bite, whip with his tail, and bounce like a spring; a living trash can called Trashbaser; a food prep machine called SlicerDicer; a friendly teacher called Mr. Chip, followed by a cruel teacher named Rekketsu; Mumbies who can now bite, shoot dark beams, and control people's minds; a lobster named Ebifryer; an evil crow named Crowmon; a trio of neckbeard animators, followed by Anige, who could use drones, lasers, a shield, and motion controls; Fang, Gus's old boss, who cheats on his bike using spikes and a chain whip, and turns into a Wheelie at the end; Fryclops, another cooking monster (how many possible Kawasaki echoes can we make?); Chuckie; Phan Phan, who rampages around, throws things, and tosses metal spike balls; Whippy (not the cat thing); a demon frog that turns Kirby evil; a Heavy Anaconda that eats the demon frog; a group called Air Riders, armed with batons, maces, rocket launchers, and tops; and finally Nightmare himself.

We also get to see the Battleship Halberd when we go to fight a major battle in Nightmare Enterprises' Headquarters, fighting a whole bunch of ships called Destroyas.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

KIRBY'S DREAM LAND 2

Next comes Kirby's Dream Land 2 for the Game Boy Color, the first appearance of Dark Matter, as well as Kirby's animal buddies Rick, Coo, and Kine. The plot goes that King Dedede becomes possessed by an Eldritch cosmic being that steals the rainbows connecting the islands of Dream Land, so Kirby and his pets set out to stop him.

As always, Kirby is our main protagonist. He does all his basics, floating, inhaling, and spitting stars, on top of his copy abilities. He also has his pets: Rick the Hamster, who carries Kirby on his back; Coo the Owl, who flies carrying Kirby; and Kine the Fish, who swims with Kirby in his mouth. These three also have unique effects based on the copy ability of Kirby, meaning that yes, all three have more than enough for their own individual movesets, and that each copy ability can count those things to their number.

At its base, Kirby only has seven copy abilities, those being: Burning, which is the same as Fireball from before; Cutter, acting the same; Ice, kind of a combo of Ice and Freeze from before, with the ice block standard; Needle, the same as before; Parasol, with the same three abilities; Spark, with the same electric field; and Stone, acting the same as before. Burning will give Rick fire breath, turn Coo into a meteor, and let Kine spit a fireball. Cutter will let Rick throw Kirby, Coo throw three feather darts, and Kine to spit a laser. Ice will turn Rick into a snowman, give Coo icy breath, and freeze the water around Kine. Needle will cause Rick to grow quills, Coo to carry a spiky Kirby upside down, and Kine to grow spikes. Parasol will let Rick bounce Kirby like a ball, Coo to gain a spin attack, and give Kine a shield. Spark will basically give Rick the Beam ability, Coo a lightning blast, and Kine a lightbulb in the dark. And finally Stone will turn Rick into a rolling boulder, make Coo divebomb straight down, and make Kine sink.

As for our allies, Gooey is a little blob of friendly Dark Matter who will show up in bags and restore your health. There's also a "Girl Blob" who does the same but shows up more rarely. King Dedede is friendly in this game, but is a boss through Dark Matter possession, with all of his basics, being floating, his hammer, inhaling, body slamming, and jumping high into the air.

The main villain is Dark Matter, who first appears as a mysterious swordsman, slashing with his sword, shooting beams from it, and charging up an energy orb, and then revealing his true form as a giant eye surrounded by murky black . . . stuff, at which point he shoots dark beams at Kirby and sends out a bunch of orbs at him.

As for our bosses, Whispy Woods returns, apparently during an epidemic judging by the mask, dropping apples and spitting air, while also sending up roots now. Nruff and Nelly are a pair of pigs that charge around. Sweet Stuff is a giant angler fish that bits, shoots lasers from its light, and summons enemies. Ice Dragon can launch itself into the air, breathe icy breath, kick icy spikes, and pound the ground to make icicles. Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright also return with the same gimmick, but this time Shine rolls, throws boomerangs and causes stars to fall, while Bright attacks with fire, drops meteors, and spawns stars, and together they can cause an eclipse. Kracko and Kracko Jr. also return, shooting beams and tossing orbs at Kirby.

As for our midbosses, Blocky returns, as does Mr. Frosty, with his same freezing and ice block attacks. We also have: Captain Stitch, a large Gordo that shoots its spikes at Kirby; Efreeti, who charges Kirby like a meteor; Jumpershoot is a Kasa-obake (haunted umbrella yokai) that can jump, spin, and throw sandals; Master Green is a jellyfish that shoots lightning and generates an electrical field; and Waiu is a ninja who throws cutter blades, attacks with a katana, shoots burning stars, and can move through the air quickly.

Finally, we have our non-copy enemies. These include old favorites like Blippers, Bronto Burts, Broom Hatters, Cappies, Glunks, Gordos, Kabus, Mumbies, Poppy Bros, Scarfies, Slippies, Squishies, and Waddle Dees, as well as newcomers Bouncy, Crack-Tweet, Elieel, Propeller, and Blade, Butch, and Masher (legally distinct Meta Knights).

Our stages include: Grass Land, the starter area; Big Forest, a forest level; Ripple Field, a beach area; Iceberg, a snow level; Red Canyon, a mountain region; Cloudy Park, a sky/volcano region; and Dark Castle, the big final area. Maxim Tomatoes, 1ups, Energy Drinks, Point Stars, and Rainbow Drops are our items.

Kirby's Adventure

KIRBY'S ADVENTURE

Next up is Kirby's Adventure for the NES, the game that set up most of the Kirby staples, such as Meta Knight, copy abilities, and twist villains. The story follows Kirby as he journeys to take the Star Rod back from King Dedede, not realizing that he took it to stop a powerful being called Nightmare from breaking free into their world.

Kirby has a lot of his basics, like floating, inhaling, and spitting out stars after inhaling, but this is also where we first see copy abilities. Now, it's time to discuss what I'll be doing with the Copy Ability Enemies. So, every game has a selection of enemies who act as the provider of said copy ability. Naturally, each of these would be perfect for the rep of that ability, but there is generally a lot of them. Typically there is one or two standards who appear in most games, as well as some one-offs here and there. Since we have room for two, I'm keeping track on a separate chart all the enemies and how many times they appear. The standards take priority for the rep (Sir Kibble for Cutter obviously), and the Star Allies are an automatic, and I will instead be keeping track of all the little add-ons for the abilities here, to see if each adds up to a full moveset.

These abilities are: Backdrop, which lets Kirby suplex enemies; Ball, which turns Kirby into a bouncy ball; Beam, which has a sparkly whip attack; Crash, which makes Kirby explode; Cutter, which sends out a boomerang blade; Fire, which gives him fire breath; Fireball, which kinda turns him into a meteor; Freeze, which gives him ice powers; Hammer, which gives Kirby a hammer that can be swung or pounded; Hi-Jump, which lets Kirby jump straight up; Ice, where he breathes a cone of frost; Laser, which gives him a laser beam; Light, which lets him light up dark rooms; Mike, which gives him a sonic attack; Needle, which gives him spikes; Parasol, which he can use to float, attack, or defend; Sleep, which puts him to sleep; Spark, which puts out an electric field around him; Stone, which turns Kirby into a heavy block; Sword, which gives him a sword and a spinning midair strike; Throw, which lets him throw things; Tornado, which lets him spin and even float a bit; UFO, which lets him fly and shoot projectiles; Wheel, which lets him roll really fast; and the Star Rod, which technically counts but is more like a special ability granted for the end of the game.

As for Kirby's supporting cast, we have King Dedede, the supposed villain of the game, who can toss out eggs and bombs, charge forward, swing his hammer, float, and inhale. Meta Knight is another recurring boss who wields a sword that he can use to slash or stab downward, uses his cape to shield or fly, and disappears. Meta Knight also has a band of knights called Axe Knight, Mace Knight, Javelin Knight, and Trident Knight, who all use said weapons in various ways.

Next we have Nightmare, the main villain. He can turn into an orb that shoots stars and crescents at Kirby, can float in midair and sweep around, and uses his cape to shield himself. Other bosses include Whispy Woods, the living tree that drops apples and spits air; Paint Roller, a pre-Adeleine type who can summon items by drawing them on his canvases; Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright, a sun and moon who take turns on the land or sky, attacking with fire or little moon boomerangs; Kracko, a living cloud that can attack with lightning and summon enemies, and also has a little Jr. form; and Heavy Mole, which can dig, claw, and shoot missiles.

As for the mini-bosses, technically they offer up copy abilities themselves, but there's often a little extra,  so . . . Mr. Frosty is a walrus that charges at you or throws blocks of ice; Mr. Tick Tock is a clock that attacks with sonic blasts and music notes; Bugzzy is a giant beetle who can grab you in his pincers and slam you into the ground, fly, and send out little ladybugs to attack; Bonkers is a monkey man wielding a hammer, who can jump high, run fast, and throws coconuts at you; Rolling Turtle is a turtle that rolls around and throws his shell at you; and the Fire Lion can pounce, chew on you, or turn into a fireball.

As for our non-copy enemies, we have Waddle Dees, Blippers, Bronto Burts, Broom Hatters, Cappies, Glunks, Gordos, Kabus, Poppy Bros, Scarfies, Squishies, and Twizzies all returning, as well as Bounders, Coners, and Slippies coming in as new enemies.

As for stages, we have the basic Vegetable Valley, the beachy Ice Cream Island, the castle Butter Building, the sky zone Grape Garden, the mountainous Yogurt Yard, the aquatic Orange Ocean, and the finale world Rainbow Resort, as well as the Fountain of Dreams from the true ending. Items like cannons and warp stars also appear.

Here's what we've got so far:

Kirby: inhale, stars, float, copy abilities

King Dedede: inhale, hammer, body slam, super jump, eggs, bombs, float

Meta Knight: sword, slash, stab downward, cape shield, fly, disappear

Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

With the laboratory staff killed or copied and the laboratory itself fully infected, Samus had to work her way through the facility and wipe out every X-Parasite she could find, immune thanks to her new Metroid DNA. Along the way, she encounters a number of other escaped experiments, including a tortured creature capable of manipulating gravity.

This is the Nightmare, a biomechanical life form engineered by the Federation and taken over by X-Parasites. It would appear again aboard the Bottle Ship in Metroid: Other M alongside other classic bosses.

As a fighter, the Nightmare will be light and floaty, using its gravity powers to full effect on its own stats. Its moveset would pull from most of its battles in both Fusion and Other M.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Character Sheet: Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

And now, let's take a quick break to go over our new characters from the six games that fall under the "Metroid" label (no Primes or remakes). As you can see, we have twenty (or twenty-five to be more accurate, but we'll get to those. They are:

1. Samus Aran

2. Adam Malkovitch

3. Mother Brain

4. MB*

5. Ridley

6. Kraid

7. Raven Beak

8. SA-X

9. Space Pirate

10. Kihunter

11. Metroid

12. X-Parasite

13. Autoad

14. Chozo Soldier

15. Robot Chozo Soldier

16. EMMI

17. Torizo

18. Phantoon

19. Nightmare

20. Metroid Queen

Next up, we have another memorable boss from the 2D games that reappeared in Other M, although this time, Fusion canonically comes after Other M, so Other M was actually Samus's first time seeing it. Anyway, Nightmare is a genetic experiment that can control gravity, and when its face is exposed, it will gradually deteriorate and melt off.

First off, Nightmare's gravity-bending abilities include the ability to increase gravity and slow its opponents, the ability to decrease gravity and leave them floating in midair, and creating gravity wells to deflect projectile attacks. It can also shoot lasers from its mouth and from its arms, and it can crawl around on its belly when it loses its gravity abilities temporarily.

Here's the movesets I came up with:

Standard B: Laser

The Nightmare will fire a laser from its mouth such as it does in its Fusion battle.

Side B: Arm Blasts

It will extend its arms and fire multiple straight laser beams while spinning in a circle, just as it does in Other M.

Up B: Gravity Float

The Nightmare will decrease gravity, making itself and those standing a little to close float up into the air.

Down B: Gravity Well

The Nightmare will create a small singularity in front of itself that will suck in projectiles and swallow them. It can also pull fighters in too.

Final Smash: Singularity

The Nightmare will increase gravity to such a point that everything starts getting sucked in, characters and stage alike, KOing them all.

Entrance: The stage will start to shake as it moves in the background.

Taunts: Up, it will rise up on its connectors. Side, it will extend its arms and roar. Down, it will slump down and its face will start to melt.

Kirby Hat: Basically Kirby inside his own version of the box thing it lives in.

Kart: Based on its mechanical cocoon.

Special Move: It will increase gravity and forcibly slow down everyone on the track.

Spirit Battle: A giant battle on Biologic Space Laboratories

Victory Screen: The Nightmare will break free of its bonds and rampage.

Losing Screen: The Nightmare's face will fully melt off and it will collapse.

Color Swaps: Its basic Fusion appearance, a red version, a silvery version, a green version, a yellow version, a white version, a black version, and its Other M appearance.

Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

As Link recovers from his crash and explores Koholint Island, it starts to become clear that all is not as it seems. He works his way up to the egg atop the mountain in order to awaken the Wind Fish from its nightmare, unaware that doing so will cause the island itself to disappear.

This nightmare however will not go down quietly. Having taken on a life of its own, it attacks Link, taking up the role of final boss. Link will have to fight it through several rounds of battle, with it taking on different forms reminiscent of old foes from his own past.

As a fighter, Nightmare will have a constantly shifting form as it takes on different shapes for different attacks. Its moveset will pull from all of its battle phases, including those referencing older boss fights.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Character Sheet: Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

Today, we begin our very first run of Legend of Zelda character sheets, figuring out just what kind of movesets we can pull from all these characters and building a roster. For the moment, we have about fourteen:

1. Link

2. Dark Link

3. Princess Zelda (Currently honorary)

4. Marin

5. Sahasrahla

6. Old Man

7. Hylian Soldier

8. Ganon

9. Agahnim

10. Nightmare

11. Moblin

12. Stalfos

13. Vire/Keese

14. Thunderbird

Today, we will cover Nightmare, the main villain of Link's Awakening and a nightmare spawned from the Wind Fish's dreams that was causing havoc all over the island. His battle took multiple forms, including a basic blob, a spellcaster form, a lanmola and moldorm form, and a Ganon form, before taking on his standard two-armed shape. Across these forms, he was shown hopping around, firing off bursts of shadow, throwing giant orbs of light, summoning monsters to fight for him, and swinging around his big arms.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Shadow Burst

He will take on his spellcaster form and cast a burst of shadow energy, probably similar in look and action to Ness's PK flash.

Side B: Lanmola

He will lunge forward in his Lanmola form, digging in and out of the ground and doing damage wherever he hits.

Up B: Blob Form

He will launch into the around, curling up into his large blob form before slamming down, kinda similar to moves like King Dedede's Up B.

Down B: Enemy Summon

He will summon enemies made of shadow (probably smaller ones like Moldorms, Pols Voices, or Leevers) and send them forward to attack.

Final Smash: Nightmare Tremble

Basically, he will cause the Wind Fish to tremble in his sleep from the nightmare, causing the stage to rumble, shadow enemies to emerge and lightning to strike the stage.

Entrance: He will form from pure shadow.

Taunts: Up, he will rise up into the shadowy form of Ganon for a second. Side, he will stretch his arms out wide and spin. Down, he will melt into shadow once again.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Ganon's main minions, the Moblins!

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: LINK'S AWAKENING

Today, let's cover Link's Awakening, the very first handheld Zelda game and probably the second-place record holder for most remakes after Ocarina of Time. Side note: This will be covering the original game, not DX or the recent HD remake. Those will come later. This game is also the first to not feature the titular Zelda, with Link washing up on a remote island after a storm and having to investigate a strange evil presence besieging the inhabitants.

Link, of course, is our main character, complete with his sword and shield like always. His items and weapons include bombs, a boomerang, a bow and arrows, a bottle to keep fairies in, a hookshot, a bag of magic powder, a magical rod to cast spells, a mirror shield that reflects beams, an ocarina, Pegasus Boots, the power bracelet, the Roc's feather that lets you hop over multiple pits in sequence, and a shovel. He can also go fishing, swim with fins, surf on a raft, throw honeycombs, and protect himself with an acorn. He also collects eight instruments as the "maguffins" of his quest from each dungeon: the Full Moon Cello, the Conch Horn, the Sea Lily's Bell, the Surf Harp, the Wind Marimba, the Coral Triangle, the Organ of Evening Calm, and the Thunder Drum, all of which are used together to awaken the Wind Fish at the end of the game.

There are a few select supporting characters living around the island. The most notable of these is Marin, a daydreaming girl with a beautiful voice who dreams of someday leaving the island. Hyrule Warriors already designated her the go-to gimmick rep for this game, so I guess most of the above can be applied down to her. She lives with her lazy father Tarin, who teaches you the honeycomb trick, and an owl acts as your exposition character. A few other characters pop up here and there, such as a friendly mermaid, a Chain Chomp named Bow Wow you can take with you on certain missions, Cuccos and a Rooster that you can hover with for a time, the Great Fairy, the monkey Kiki again, and Wart of all things (or I guess his name is Mamu here). The Wind Fish is a giant sleeping whale at the top of the island, whose dreams created the island which will disappear upon its awakening.

The main villain of the game is a Nightmare that has been infecting the Wind Fish's dreams. In its battle it takes multiple different forms, including a giant blob form, a spellcaster form, a lanmola form, a moldorm form, and a Ganon form. It also attacks by hopping around, shooting bursts of shadow, throwing a giant orb, summoning monsters, and swinging its big arms around in its true form.

Across the game, you have a number of bosses in each dungeon, as well as mini-bosses both in and out of said dungeons. The mini-bosses include: A Moblin Chief that charges and throws spears at you; a Lanmola; an Armos Knight; the entrance to the Turtle Rock dungeon itself; a blobby creature that rolls spikes at you; a Hinox that throws bombs; snakes based on Dodongos; Hydrosoar, an aquatic monster; Master Stalfos, a Stalfos with a sword and shield that jumps around and collapses into pieces when hit; Gohma with its eye beam; Rover, a big manta ray thing that throws a ball; the Grim Creeper, who can summon enemies; and Blaino, a boxer who punches you. The actual bosses include: Moldorm; a Genie that hits you with magic blasts; an eyeball inside a blob of slime; Facade, a giant living floor; an evil Eagle; and Hot Head, a living fireball.

As for our enemies, our returning cast includes: Hardhat Beetles, Leevers, Moblins (with swords and shields), Zoras, Tektites, Keese, Zols, Stalfos (some with shrouds), Mini-Moldorms, Goombas, Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs, Pokeys, Boos, Bloopers, and Thwomps, Pols Voices, Soldiers with ball-and-chains, Darknuts, Peahats, Helmasaurs, Like Likes, Bubbles, Buzz Blobs, Wizzrobes, Armos, and a Vire that casts a curse upon you. New enemies include: Sea Urchins, Boarblins (slightly different from Moblins), Zombies, Sparks, Three of a Kind (basically slot machines as enemies), Zirros (flying mushrooms that drop bombs), Pairrods (parrots that spit projectiles), Arm Mimics whose arms mimic yours, Mad Bombers (knights who live in holes and throw bombs), Battle Bats (basically flies), Angler Fries (angler fish), and Stars.

The action of the game takes place entirely on Koholint Island, a dream island with a giant egg at the very top of the central mountain. Mabe Village is the main location where Marin, Tarin, and the other NPCs live, Toronbo Shores is the nearby beach, along with a Mysterious Wood, Goponga Swamp (a swamp area), Ukuku Prairie, a mansion made of seashells, a village full of talking animals, Yarna Desert, Tal Tal Heights (a mountainous region), the Eagle's Tower, and the inside of the Wind Fish's Egg. The dungeons are hidden around these regions.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's take a stop there, since from here the series kinda splits into two branches, and we'll cover all characters we can possibly pull from this round, starting with Link.
