King Dedede

KING DEDEDE

The first game’s plot was fairly simple, a big bad king stole all the food in Dream Land, and Kirby, being the glutton he is, sets out to take it all back.

This king was King Dedede, a fat penguin and major rival of Kirby. Though he’d never be a true villain following this game, he would appear again and again as a boss, often under some form of mind control, his intentions being misunderstood. On occasion, he’d even be a full-on ally.

As a fighter, he’d be big and heavy, but floaty in his own way. He’d be heavy-hitting with his powerful hammer, his moveset pulling from all his various boss fights across the series.

Likelihood rating: Already in.

Kirby Novel Series

KIRBY NOVEL SERIES

The Kirby novel series is an ongoing series of light novels written by Mie Takase, starting in 2013. Most of the issues specifically adapt the plots of current games or major events going on of some kind. The novels always feature Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee (also, I'm pretty sure the writer ships Kirby and Waddle Dee HARD. They are VERY attached to each other). They also tend to feature characters like Magolor, Taranza, the Meta-Knights, and so on quite regularly.

Here and there, original characters crop up, such as the snooty Mrs. Parfaitski; three troublemaking children named Kerota, Keroji, and Kerolina; a Woodkeeper looking to steal some magic fruit; a false Dyna Blade named Acti Blade; a lost princess named Marona, who throws cakes, uses a magic cookbook, and destroys a bunch of things under mind control; the man controlling her named Baron Gallic, who has a Malice Stone to control people, while also using throwing knives and having a small airship; a fake games presenter named Kizario looking for his pet Peperon; a young boy named Moa who pretends to be an apprentice of Meta Knight, but instead wants to mind control Galacta Knight; Director Kane, working for Haltmann Works; Tron, an inventor wo used a magic camera and printer to create a bunch of Kirby clones and set up the plot for Battle Royale; Pirika, a worshipper of Queen Sectonia, who planted her own Dreamstalk, and can fly and toss fruit; a wealthy lord named Hugo; a shapeshifter named Beryl; and a butterfly named Papi.

There are a few I haven't been able to read yet, because of translation problems, but as far as I can tell, there are no notable original characters that I need to be worried about yet.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Marona: cakes, cookbook, destroy

Baron Gallic: Malice Stone, throwing knives, airship

Moa: sword, broom, controller

Director Kane: Susie or Haltmann echo?

Tron: camera, printer, clone, Battle Royale echo

Pirika: dreamstalk, mind control, fruit, fly

Beryl: Meta Knight echo?

Stages:

There's possibilities, I guess.

Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Season Four

KIRBY: RIGHT BACK AT YA!

Next up, we have the final season of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! where we saw the final battle against Nightmare Enterprises and the debut of the Battleship Halberd. Kirby gained the abilities Paint, Wing, Throw, Baton, Water, Iron, and Top during this season, and used the Star Rod in the final battle. Gus the Mechanic gained a bit when we learned that he used to be a member of a biker gang and had to run a race against his old boss. We also learn that Melman the Mailman used to be a legendary biker. Gus may have gotten enough during that episode, and Melman could now easily be an echo.

Other allies include the debut of Bonkers, Chef Kawasaki's old buddy Chef Nagoya, and a robot duplicate of Escargoon called Escar-droid, who could pour tea and give massages, and later fly, shoot missiles, and attack with swords when King Dedede alters it. King Dedede's monsters include: Paint Roller; Red Viper, who could punch, bite, whip with his tail, and bounce like a spring; a living trash can called Trashbaser; a food prep machine called SlicerDicer; a friendly teacher called Mr. Chip, followed by a cruel teacher named Rekketsu; Mumbies who can now bite, shoot dark beams, and control people's minds; a lobster named Ebifryer; an evil crow named Crowmon; a trio of neckbeard animators, followed by Anige, who could use drones, lasers, a shield, and motion controls; Fang, Gus's old boss, who cheats on his bike using spikes and a chain whip, and turns into a Wheelie at the end; Fryclops, another cooking monster (how many possible Kawasaki echoes can we make?); Chuckie; Phan Phan, who rampages around, throws things, and tosses metal spike balls; Whippy (not the cat thing); a demon frog that turns Kirby evil; a Heavy Anaconda that eats the demon frog; a group called Air Riders, armed with batons, maces, rocket launchers, and tops; and finally Nightmare himself.

We also get to see the Battleship Halberd when we go to fight a major battle in Nightmare Enterprises' Headquarters, fighting a whole bunch of ships called Destroyas.

Here's what we've got so far:

Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Season Two

KIRBY: RIGHT BACK AT YA!

Next up, we'll cover the next twenty-five episodes of the anime. This season brought over most of the same cast and settings as the original. Kirby added to his arsenal Mike, Wheel, Cleaning, and Bomb. J.K. Rowling (or I guess the character's name was Rowlin) had a guest star as basically herself, just "legally distinct." Whispy Woods also had an old friend named Acore, and fell in love with a flower named Lovely, that Dedede turned into a monster with draining vines and blades.

Other monsters that King Dedede ordered included: an Ice Dragon robot; a chef named Monsieur Goan, who competed with Kawasaki; a baby and adult Galbo; Walky; a drilling mole named Hardy; Fire Lion; a giant corn on the cob named Cobgoblin; Broom King, who pretended to be Rowlin; Erasem, who erased Escargoon from everyone's memories like Sugar did to the toys in Dressrosa in One Piece, except it was played more for laughs than the nightmare fuel it truly is; Masher, the most powerful monster in NME's library, swinging a mace, flying with rockets, and spinning really fast; Fridgy, an icy mammoth; Amon, a sheep fighting for sheep freedom; a Domestic Servant Robot with helper arms and lasers; a fire monster called Flame Feeder; and a bomb monster named Denjaa.

Not much new in terms of locations, so here's what we've got:

Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Season One

KIRBY: RIGHT BACK AT YA!

Kirby, Kirby, Kirby, it's the name you should know. Kirby, Kirby, he's the star of the show. He's got more than you think, he's got maximum pink. Kirby, Kirby, Kirby's the one!

Kirby: Right Back at Ya! is an anime series that aired in 2001, loosely based on the games and starring the adorable pink puffball himself. The general premise is that decades before, a group of heroes called the Star Warriors warred against the evil Nightmare Enterprises, ultimately losing. In the present, Kirby, a baby star warrior, crashlands on a planet called Dream Land, making his home in Cappy Town, ruled over by King Dedede, a selfish manbaby who regularly buys monsters from Nightmare Enterprises to terrorize his citizens for fun.

Kirby is our main character, and can generally do all that his game counterpart can, with his copy abilities Fire, Stone, Sword, Cutter, Cook, Parasol, Tornado, Needle, Fighter, Ice, and Ninja all appearing in the first season. He becomes fast friends with Tiff and Tuff, the children of King Dedede's chamberlain who live in the castle with him. Across the series both help him out a lot, Tiff being the main person to call in his warp star, studying up on random subjects relating to each episode's plot, doing a lot of random odd jobs around town, and occasionally losing her temper and beating people with a hammer. Tuff is the more rambunctious and active of the duo, regularly playing soccer with his friends, and pulling pranks with things like slingshots and clubs.

Meta Knight also plays a major supporting role in the story, being a retired Star Warrior who made his home on the planet to keep an eye on King Dedede's dealings with N.M.E. He is often accompanied by his two apprentices: Blade Knight and Sword Knight. Knuckle Joe also appears as the son of one of Meta Knight's fallen comrades, believing Meta Knight responsible for his death. Kit Cosmos is another star warrior marooned on an island far out to sea, setting up a number of survivalist traps around the island and using spears, arrows, and a training sword to defend himself. Not a Star Warrior, but worth mentioning is the alien princess Rona and her bodyguard Vee. While disguised as Vee, Rona uses a sword, flies a spaceship, fishes, eats cotton candy, and slices a monster into sushi.

Cappy Town has a large number of recurring characters. It is mainly made up of Cappies, who aren't quite the bouncing mushrooms from the game, but grayish blobs that stand-in for generic NPCs. The most notable of these include Mayor Len Blustergast and his wife Hana, Police chief Bookem and his wife Buttercup, the archaeologist Professor Curio, restaurant owner Chef Kawasaki, fortune teller Mabel, bartender Samo, mechanic Gus, grocery store owner Tuggle, toy shop owner Gengu, local doctor Yabui, elderly postal worker Melman, and Tiff and Tuff's friends Iro, Honey, and Spikehead. Though there is enough generally to make a "Cappy" moveset, Curio, Bookem, and Yabui all do more than enough to warrant their own movesets in respective episodes starring them this season.

There is also Tiff and Tuff's parents, Sir Ebrum and Lady Like, who might be able to be echoes of their children, but I'm not totally certain (it's hard to see Ebrum or Like kicking around a soccer ball and firing a slingshot the way their son would, basically). Lololo and Lalala, or I guess Fololo and Falala for some reason, appear as Tiff and Tuff's adopted siblings, a former monster split in two. They regularly help out and probably have enough to work with. Rick, Coo, and Kine make regular appearances, as does Tokkori, a yellow bird with a nasty attitude who becomes Kirby's roommate. Kawasaki's mentor Chef Shiitake appears at one point, as does Escargoon's mama. Three major fixtures of Dream Land include Kabu, who gives sage wisdom; Whispy Woods, who protects the local forest; and Dynablade, a veritable force of nature fiercely protective of her chick.

Speaking of, King Dedede is our main villain, often accompanied by his personal sycophant Escargoon, forming a comedic villain duo. Escargoon regularly takes part in all of King Dedede's schemes, his actions including driving a tank, using a laser chainsaw, sucking up various things, inventing a monster formula, inventing a spy cricket, distributing Dedede dolls, and getting turned into a monster when King Dedede destroys his shell. The pair regularly interact with a salesman representing N.M.E., who appears on a monitor and delivers various monsters and items to them. He works for Nightmare, but Nightmare really doesn't make any notable appearances until the end of the series, so we'll wait until then. Waddle Dees make up the bulk of King Dedede's minions, led by a Waddle Doo who acts as their leader and voice when addressing someone else.

King Dedede's monster ordered from NME this season have included, from the games: Blocky, Bugzzy, Kracko, Popon (the things from Kirby's Avalanche), Sasuke (who uses rockets, bombs, fireworks, and exploding rings against Kirby), Noddy, Chilly, and Ice Dragon; alongside anime originals like: Octacon, an octopus who sprouts smaller octopi made of fire; a statue piloted by King Dedede; Slice 'n' Splice, the monster that created Fololo and Falala; Urameshiya, a ghost; a Robot Dog that becomes Kirby's pet and can use a drill, claws, spray pineapple juice, protect itself with electricity, and ultimately explode; Honker Stomper, a vacuum monster; the Pukey Flower that spawns Noddies; Susshi, a giant fish monster; Tornadon, a wind monster; Benikage and Yamikage, a pair of ninja enemies who use various martial arts; and Wolfwrath, a powerful monster with a vendetta against Meta Knight, who can breathe fire, swipe with its claws, and paralyze a person with its horn.

The anime generally takes place in Cappy Town and King Dedede's castle, and some of the surrounding areas, such as Whispy Woods' forest, Dynablade's nest, and the seaside.

Here's what we've got so far:

Kirby Fighters 2

KIRBY FIGHTERS 2

Kirby Fighters 2 is a sequel to Kirby Fighters Deluxe, and thus basically Super Smash Bros. but with Kirby characters (mainly different copy ability Kirbys) as playable characters. The playable characters include Archer, Artist, Beam, Beetle, Bell, Bomb, Cutter, Fighter, Hammer, Ninja, Parasol, Staff, Sword, Water, Whip, Yo-Yo, and the brand-new completely original Wrestler Kirby. All of them have their own moveset, and to ease my workload, I'm just keeping a mark on the WiKirby page that lists their moves so I can just look them up when I'm doing the character sheet. It's much easier that way.

Outside of the Kirbys, Bandana Waddle Dee, Gooey, Magolor, Meta Knight, and King Dedede are also playable. Our stages include the Star Allies-based Green Gardens, Springy-Hand Land, Dried-Up Sea (based on Planet Robobot), a basic training arena, Gourmet Go Go (based on Gourmet Race), Bubbly Clouds, Haldera Volcano, Castle Lololo, Waddle Dee Train Tracks, Coo's Forest, Dedede Arena, Butter Building, Factory Tour, Gigavolt (based on the boss battle), Dynablade's Nest, Jambastion Entrance (from Star Allies), The Empyrean (based on the Clash games), Fountain of Dreams, and the Stage of Destined Rivals (or Partners), which is basically the final battle arena.

Two Whispy Woods, two Gigant Edges, and Shadow Kirby act as bosses. Action Stars, Bombers, Buddy Star Blasters, Cheer Pom-Poms, Containers, Crackers, Cracklers, Dash Shoes, Food, Gordo Balls, Ice Containers, Invincible Candies, Mikes, Mint Leaves, Timed Dynamite, and a Zap Weapon are the items.

And that's pretty much it! Here's what we've got:

Kirby Fighters Deluxe

KIRBY FIGHTERS DELUXE

I suppose one would think that a game like this was inevitable, given the relationship between the Kirby and Smash series. After all, there's a reason so many random one-off enemies and bosses became playable, because the two series share a lot of design philosophies in common. So, basically a Smash game with different Kirbys fighting each other just makes sense.

The roster for the game includes Archer, Beam, Bomb, Cutter, Fighter, Hammer, Ninja, Parasol, Sword, Whip, Beetle, and Bell Kirby, with full movesets for each. Obviously this means that the main reps for the Archer and Bell abilities can consider themselves added. I think that was Ringle for Bell, and . . . I have to go digging up those notes for Archer. Don't worry, I will when we get to that point. King Dedede acts as a final boss.

Our stages are Flower Land, a generic stage; Springy Hand Land, with all those hands shooting out from the background; Castle Lololo, a near-perfect recreation; Coo's Forest, a stage with lots of trees; Dedede Arena; Factory Tour, with smashing hammers; Bubbly Clouds, a sky stage; Dynablade's Nest from Super Star; Butter Building, also perfectly recreated; Haldera Volcano, a lava stage; Fountain of Dreams; and Waddle Dee Train Tracks, another with some of those 3D elements from Triple Deluxe, where the origin of this game came from.

The items include Action Stars, Bombers, Containers, Cracklers, Dash Shoes, Food, Gordo Balls, Invincible Candies, Mikes, Mint Leaves, Team Cannons, and Timed Dynamite.

And that's it for now! Here's what we've got:

Kirby Air Ride

KIRBY AIR RIDE

Now, here's a game that my brother and I actually owned, but apparently, we f*ed something up, because the only thing we could figure out to do on it was City Trial, and after wandering around that for hours, we were like "this is really boring. Where's all the stuff to do? We're just wandering around an empty city. The box said it was a racing game." I don't know what happened. Clearly we did something wrong or we just had a faulty disc.

Kirby Air Ride is a racing game with three main modes. Air Ride is the standard 3D kart-racing level, where you ride around on Warpstars and such against mostly other Kirbys, plus King Dedede and Meta Knight as unlockables. Copy Abilities act as your "items" for the kart-racing, with Bomb letting you throw bombs, Fire letting you toss fireballs, Freeze surrounding you in an ice barrier, Mike is basically the music box, Plasma lets you shoot electric beams, Sleep puts Kirby to sleep, Sword gives you a sword to attack with, Tornado gives you an added spin, Wheel turns you into a wheel, and Wing gives you the ability to fly.

The stages include the generic Fantasy Meadows, the scenic Celestial Valley, the desert Sky Sands, the icy Frozen Hillside, the volcanic Magma Flows, the high-tech Machine Passage, the sky Beanstalk Park, the castle Checker Knights, and the space Nebula Belt.

Top Ride sets you in top-down races, set on a Grass, Sand, Sky, Fire, Light, Water, and Metal track. Then City Trial is a city you can roam around in, collecting various new items and things and various little sidequests to perform. Dynablade appears here. I should also mention the Dragoon and Hydra, a couple of special vehicles you have to assemble to unlock. Several standard enemies crop up as cameos across these three modes.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Kirby

King Dedede

Whispy Woods

Kracko

Poppy Bros.

Mr. Shine & Mr. Bright

Brobo: maybe gimmick rep? Is there enough for that?

Gordo

Waddle Dee

Waddle Doo

Observor

Wheelie: air ride gimmick rep? (Let's be real, if there was ever a game they could be a gimmick rep for . . .)

Dynablade

Etc.

Stages:

Kracko Land

Poppy Bros. Sr. Land

Kirby's Avalanche

Kirby's Dream Course

KIRBY'S DREAM COURSE

Kirby's Dream Course is, functionally a fancy mini-golf game using Kirby as the ball, set on isometric courses in the sky, except there is no hole on the stage until Kirby has knocked out every enemy on the stage by rolling into them. The game is set across eight generic courses, with a King Dedede fight at the very end. The two-player mode sets you in battles against Whispy Woods, Mr. Shine & Mr. Bright, Kracko, and a horde of Gordos. Kirby can also use the copy abilities Fireball, Freeze, Hi-Jump, Needle, Parasol, Spark, Stone, Tornado, UFO, and Wheel to help get across the field or take out enemies easier. The enemies are most of the basic crew, and all function basically as obstacles to beat.

And that's about it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

67. Mr. Frosty, Bugzzy, Bonkers, Blocky, Waiu, Chef Kawasaki, Box Boxer, Boxy, Dubior, Gigant Edge, and Fleurina all are strong contenders among the mini-bosses, as are the Poppy Bros as mini-bosses and enemies, but are all also Copy Ability contenders, either as the main or the echo. I’m holding off on all of that until we are finished with the mainline games.

68.  think it’s fair to say that Artist, Suplex, Beam, Beetle, Bomb, Circus, Clean, Cook, Cutter, Doctor, ESP, Fighter, Fire, Hammer, Ice, Magic, Needle, Ninja, Parasol, Spark, Spider, Staff, Stone, Sword, Tornado, UFO, Water, Wheel, Whip, Wing, and Yo-Yo will all have a playable fighter, not least because most of those are represented in Star Allies, and thus have literal full movesets programmed, and their one or two most common representatives will be playable, but we’ll cover that tomorrow!

And that's it. Tomorrow, we will go deep into the copy abilities that we've been archiving thus far!
