Lor Starcutter

LOR STARCUTTER

In Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, the central focus of most of the game was collecting the parts for Magolor’s inter-dimensional ship, the Lor Starcutter, which they then use to fly to Magolor’s home.

This is the most natural option for a stage representing the game. The stage would be set on the deck of the Starcutter as it flies through the same interdimensional void the final battle took place in. Certain parts of the stage are breakable after taking enough damage.

Metal General

METAL GENERAL

Last but not least, Return introduced us to a boss in the form of Metal General, a robotic walker with lots of high-tech weaponry. This would make an easy return in Planet Robobot.

As a fighter, Meta General will be slow with high defense and an explosive arsenal. Its moveset would pull from its various boss battles.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Dubior

DUBIOR

Return also introduced us to Dubior, a flying saucer mini-boss that would recur a couple more times throughout the series.

As a fighter, it will have high defense and good aerials with lots of projectiles. Its moveset will pull from its various boss battles.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Goriath

GORIATH

A memorable one-off boss for Return’s snow level came in the form of Goriath, an angry yeti that hopped around the stage and clung to the walls.

As a fighter, Goriath would be fast and strong with good wall-clinging abilities. Its moveset would pull from its boss fight.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Moonja

MOONJA

Though Bio Spark was the OG when it came to the Ninja ability, it is now rivaled for total appearances by Moonja, a similar ninja with ties to the moon.

As a fighter, Moonja will be fast and stealthy, like all of its type. It will be an echo to Bio Spark, pull from the same move pool.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Whippy

WHIPPY

Another new ability Kirby gained in Return is his Whip ability, a power that gives him a cowboy hat and a whip for striking opponents with. The most common provider of this ability is Whippy, a small cat head with a long tail.

As a fighter, Whippy’s mobility will be limited, but it will be light and speedy to make up for it. Its moveset will pull from the Whip ability in general.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Gigant Edge

GIGANT EDGE

Another recurring midboss, this one first appearing in Return to Dream Land, is Gigant Edge, a large armored knight armed with a sword and shield, that tends to offer up the Sword ability when defeated.

As a fighter, Gigant Edge will be heavy and powerful, using its shield for high defense. It will be a semi-clone to Sword Knight and Blade Knight, using its shield in its moveset a bit more often.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Leafan

LEAFAN

Starting in Return to Dream Land, Kirby will gain the leaf ability, which lets him hide in a pile of leaves or send a swirl of leaves out as an attack. Most often, this ability is given by Leafan, a plant bulb with sizable leaves of its own.

As a fighter, Leafan will be light and floaty, with minimal attack power. Its moveset will pull entirely from the Leaf ability in all its forms.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Sphere Doomer

SPHERE DOOMER

In Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, most of the pieces of Magolor’s ship turn out to be protected by strange demonic beings from another world called Sphere Doomers, an early hint of Magolor’s true wicked intentions.

As fighters, the Sphere Doomers will be fast and powerful, with decent aerials. Their moveset will pull from their various battles and all their various forms.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Foley

FOLEY

Though the Poppy Bros. are the best when it comes to the Bomb ability, another rivals it in terms of appearances providing it, and that is the Foley, a flying turnip sort of creature that drops bombs from above.

As a fighter, Foley will have good aerials and explosive attacks, but not much else giving it a boost in stats. Its moveset will pull from all aspects of the Bomb ability.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

UFO

UFO

A rather unique ability of Kirby’s is his UFO ability, which lets him fly around and shoot lasers. This ability is most often provided by the aptly named UFO enemy, which looks just like you’d expect it to.

As a fighter, the UFO will have good aerials and projectiles, its moveset pulling from the various aspects of the UFO ability.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

Sparky

SPARKY

Along with fire, electricity is also common in most power systems, hence we have the Spark or Plasma ability, most often represented by the small green enemy, Sparky.

As a fighter, Sparky will be quick and erratic, mimicking the nature of its element. Its moveset will pull from all aspects of both the Spark and Plasma abilities.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Landia

LANDIA

After helping Magolor repair his ship, he asks you to help him return to his homeworld and fight the evil dragon residing there.

This dragon turns out to be Landia, a good dragon and guardian of the Master Crown, a powerful artifact Magolor wants to steal. After realizing their mistake, the heroes team up with Landia in order to stop Magolor’s wicked schemes.

As fighters, Landia will be able to split between a single body and four bodies, its attacks differing slightly between forms. Its moveset will pull from its boss battle and later assistance of the player characters.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Magolor

MAGOLOR

After about five years without a mainline game, the Kirby series returned to form with Return to Dream Land, which saw Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee witness a ship from another dimension crashland, all four racing to it to find its pilot inside.

This is Magolor, who begs their help to retrieve the missing pieces of his ship. Though he seems a friendly ally, in the end, he is revealed to be using you to repair his ship and help him steal a powerful artifact that he can use for world domination.

As a fighter, he will be light and floaty, but with powerful magical attacks behind him. His moveset will pull from his boss battle as well as his playable appearance in the game’s remake.

Likelihood rating: Strong.

Galacta Knight

GALACTA KNIGHT

In 2008, Kirby Super Star saw an expanded remake with a few extra modes. One of these featured Meta Knight playing through Kirby’s adventures, reaching Galactic Nova to make a wish only to wish to fight the strongest warrior in the universe.

This wish summoned forth Galacta Knight, a warrior similar to Meta Knight but armed with a lance instead of a sword. Galacta Knight would recur again and again, often as the final boss of the Meta Knight mini-games in most subsequent entries.

As a fighter, Galacta Knight would be similar in stats to Meta Knight, with much greater power behind his attacks and better aerials. His moveset would pull from his various battles.

Likelihood rating: Good possibility.

Bandana Waddle Dee

BANDANA WADDLE DEE

Most Kirby games come with a handful of sub-games separate from the main story. For Super Star, this included Megaton Punch, a block-breaking game, where Kirby’s first opponent was a special Waddle Dee wearing a bandana.

Though this is technically his true origin, Bandana Waddle Dee would not see true importance until Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, where he joined Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight as the main playable characters. He wielded a spear, and would go on to play significant roles in every subsequent game, and even tended to be the go-to player 2 in many games.

As a fighter, Bandana Waddle Dee will be quick and light, using his spear for most of his attacks. His moveset will pull from all of his major appearances across the series.

Likelihood rating: Strong.

King Dedede

KING DEDEDE

The first game’s plot was fairly simple, a big bad king stole all the food in Dream Land, and Kirby, being the glutton he is, sets out to take it all back.

This king was King Dedede, a fat penguin and major rival of Kirby. Though he’d never be a true villain following this game, he would appear again and again as a boss, often under some form of mind control, his intentions being misunderstood. On occasion, he’d even be a full-on ally.

As a fighter, he’d be big and heavy, but floaty in his own way. He’d be heavy-hitting with his powerful hammer, his moveset pulling from all his various boss fights across the series.

Likelihood rating: Already in.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

KIRBY'S RETURN TO DREAM LAND

Next up is Kirby's Return to Dream Land for the Nintendo Wii. This game sees Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee all pitching in to help fix a crashed ship from another dimension after seeing it fall, unaware that the pilot may not be as trustworthy as he appears.

Kirby is our main character, as always, and the automatic player one no matter what. He brings with him all of his basics, with added super abilities on certain of his copy abilities. His new copy abilities include: Leaf, which lets him throw leaves and hide in a pile of them; Spear, which can be thrusted or tossed; Water, which lets him spit water and surf on a wave; and Whip, which lets him strike or grab opponents. These come alongside the returning Beam, Bomb, Crash, Cutter, Fighter, Fire, Hammer, Hi-Jump, Ice (which adds on an icy shield move), Mike, Needle (which can be shot out now), Ninja, Parasol, Sleep, Spark (which now lets you throw the electric field), Stone (which gives you a stone fist), Sword, Tornado, and Wing. Beam, Hammer, Fire, Ice, and Sword all gain a super move.

King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee are all playable through Player 2-4. King Dedede is basically a dedicated Hammer moveset, with multiple hammer attacks like charging it, spinning it forward, and throwing it. Meta Knight has multiple slashes and thrusts, with a spin attack, a sword beam, and his Shuttle Loop attack. Bandana Waddle Dee is a dedicated Spear moveset, with multiple directional thrusts, a multi-stab attack, the ability to fly by spinning it like a helicopter, and a throw.

Magolor is our main supporting character, later revealed to be the main villain. He gets Kirby and friends to help him restore his ship and then recruits them to help fight the dragon who attacked him in the first place, the guardian of a powerful crown that will give him unlimited power. First, he fights you on his ship, which can shoot energy orbs and toss its wings like boomerangs. Then, fighting you himself, he can shoot energy spheres, summon Sphere Doomers to attack, create black holes, and protect himself with a star shield. Meanwhile, Landia, the dragon he leads you to think is the villain, is made up of four smaller dragons, can shoot fireballs, control electrical currents, create windstorms, and fly.

Whispy Woods returns as a boss, this time gaining the ability to inhale Kirby and chew on him. Mr. Dooter is a genie who can pull skulls and snakes from his turban and spin really fast. Fatty Puffer is a puffer fish that can roll, spit water, and inflate. Goriath is an ape that can punch and control ice, cling to walls, and fire energy waves. The Grand Doomer is the largest of the Sphere Doomers, which can fire energy spheres, travel through a dimensional rift, and gains armor, on top of the lightning, projectiles, rolling, and charging used by the smaller of its kind. Metal General wields a sword, bombs, and missiles before fighting you in HR-D3 which can fire homing rockets, shoot lasers, and spin its arms. I should also mention the first appearance of Galacta Knight, who wields a lance and shield, and can also summon energy swords.

For our mid-bosses, we have Bonkers once again, pretty standard to his normal; Dubior, a UFO that can fire sparks, creates an energy shield, and summons little minions; Gigant Edge, a knight with a shield that charges with its sword; Kibble Blade, a very big Sir Kibble; King Doo, a very big Waddle Doo; Moundo, a large rock that rolls around and crashes down from above; and Water Galboros, a very large Water Galbo.

Our returning non-copy enemies include Waddle Dee (with armor and puppet form now), Babut, Blipper, Bouncy, Bronto Burt, Broom Hatter, Cappy, Como, Glunk, Gordo, Kabu, Mopoo, Mumbies, Nruff, Pacto, Scarfy, and Squishy, alongside newcomers Barbar, Barracu, Bowby, Carry Dee, Cerulean, Clayn, Craby, Degout, Pacloud, Shelt, and Walf.

Our stages include the basic stage Cookie Country, the desert Raisin Ruins, the beach Onion Ocean, the snow level White Wafers, the sky level Nutty Noon, the mechanized Egg Engines, the volcanic Dangerous Dinner, and the final battle area Another Dimension. Also, Magolor's ship Lor Starcutter is a good solid stage unto itself.
