Character Sheet: Flurry

FLURRY

Now, we have finished the television series, and we have SO many characters to cover, from all across the spectrum. There are a few characters here and there that might get a few upgrades to their movesets, mostly being the Donkey Kong cast (one example, I think Klump should absolutely have a Klaptrap gun now). But, there are so many that are so distinct from their game counterparts, I could only make a brand new slot for them. They are:

1.     Beezo

2.     Flurry

3.     Rex

4.     Tryclyde

5.     TV Mario

6.     TV Luigi

7.     Tommy Treehugger & Co-MC

8.     Evil Eric & Tammy Treehugger

9.     Princess Toadstool

10.  TV Toad

11.  Bones Bailey

12.  Oogtar

13.  King Koopa

14.  Robo Koopa

15.  TV Koopalings

16.  Wizenheimer

17.  Clovis

18.  Barney Todd

19.  Master Bryan

20.  Kid Dynamo

21.  Dr. Demise

22.  Gorilla Ghost

23.  Mervin the Magician

24.  Genie

25. Brutius Grouchimus Maximus

26.  Captain Clump

27.  Bunsen

28.  Hercufleas

29.  Salvador Drainaro

30.  Sergeant Kooperman

31.  Flab Boys

32.  James Blonde

33.  Vampa White

34.  Zero

35.  Captain Abidab

36.  Mugga the Medicine Woman

37.  Misaki

38.  Waldo the Wizard

39.  Quirks

40.  Queen Mushroomkhamen

41.  Wizard King of the West

42.  Junior

43.  Mighty Plumber

44.  Crime Wave Clyde

45.  Dino Riders

46.  Candy Kong

47.  Bluster Kong

48.  Eddie the Mean Old Yeti

49.  Baby Kong

50.  Kong Fu

51.  Metal Head

52.  Captain Skurvy

Not to be confused with the Paper Mario character of a similar name. The Flurries are another race of otherwise innocuous Super Mario Bros. 2 enemies that pretty much would never have gotten in were it not for their role in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! They are basically the snow enemies of Super Mario Bros. 2, though with different enough abilities from Mr. Blizzard to not be conflated with them. Hmm, what's with the surprise ice enemies lately?

Now, in the original game, the Flurries just kind of slid around on the ice and nothing else. In the show, however, they appear regularly in any snow-themed episode, and can ski, ice skate, use ice wands to freeze people in blocks of ice, use skates to carve up a block of ice and send it forward, and whip up flurries of snow. A lot of fairly basic stuff, but unique enough for me!

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Ice Block
Based on the move that pretty much clinched it for me in the show, the Flurry will skate around really face, carving up an ice block that will rise from the ground and slide forward across the stage.

Side B: Ice Wand
This is based on the ice wands used by Koopa and his forces in one episode featuring the Flurries. They will cast a spell with the wand, and anyone it hits will be frozen solid in a block of ice.

Up B: Ski Jump
This is more based on them skiing in general. Basically, the move will function similarly to Squirtle's Up B, except he will ride a ski jump up on a pair of skis before launching into the air for a small distance.

Down B: Snowdrift
Based upon moves used by them and Toad while snowboarding, the Flurry will skate forward quickly, come to a screeching stop, and toss up a bunch of thick snow to bury an opponent.

Final Smash: Fryguy
Since he did not make it in, and in game, he is the boss of the snow level, I figure it's fitting to include him here. Fryguy will appear on the stage, making things incredibly hot, and then will start spewing flames everywhere.

Entrance: The Flurry will skate gently onto the stage and stop.

Taunts: Up, the Flurry will do a skating twirl like you'd see in a competition. Side, the Flurry will skate side to side for a second. Down, the Flurry will cower for a second as a strong winter wind blows.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover Rex, another lesser known enemy, this time from Super Mario World!

52.  Captain Skurvy

Now, I said I was going to be covering the TV version of Mario, but I figured it was best to cover those that would be part of the main Mario roster first. So, today's character will instead be Beezo. You may remember Beezo as the sorta Shy Guy-looking enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2, with little fairy wings who flies forward with a spear out. Definitely not a character who gave us much to work with in the games, but, thanks to SMB2 being a major basis for the first season of Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Beezos acted frequently as major minions of King Koopa.

In the show, the Beezos fly and uses their spears, just like in the game, but they also make use of lances, swords, ropes, and nets, all of which can be useful here. It's also worth noting that they appear most prominently in the Gladiator-themed episode starring Brutius Grouchimus Maximus, meaning we could probably borrow some from him as well.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Spear

Obviously, their most important weapon has to be on full display here. It will be a major part of his moveset in various ways, but this one will pull specifically from the game. The Beezo will point his spear straight forward and thrust toward the nearest enemy, stabbing them with it.

Side B: Koopa Toss

This is a move Grouchimus is sure to use, but it works just as well here. The Beezo will throw a shell (stylized like the show) forward at high speed, resulting in a powerful collision. It might be fun to have the Koopa Troopa of the show emerge for a second after it stops.

Up B: Wings

Obviously we're going to use the wings here, as its their main form of aerial maneuvering. We'll also add some of the spear in here and have him swoop up quickly with the spear, doing damage with the upward movement.

Down B: Net

This will make use of the net used by the Beezos to catch Mario and his friends. When activated, a second Beezo will appear and the pair will hold the net between them, flying forward before tossing it down, trapping anyone underneath.

Final Smash: Subcon Armies

If I remember right, Wart had something like this, so my thought is that instead of the game versions of the enemy, Beezo will summon an army of their TV show variants and lead them into battle.

Entrance: It will fly on in its 8-bit form.

Taunts: Up, it will raise its spear to the sky and let out a cheer. Side, it will turn into its 8-bit version and move side to side. Down, it will pull a vegetable from the ground.

Thanks for reading! Next up, their Subcon companions, the Flurries!

Other Film and TV

OTHER FILM AND TV

Now that we've covered all the main movies and television series, let's finish off with all of the other film and TV that I wouldn't quite count as actual Mario media, but do contain Mario characters within it. First off, in the film department, we have, most notably, the 1989 Fred Savage movie The Wizard, the climax of which featured the literal reveal and announcement of Super Mario Bros. 3. We also have the 2015 Adam Sandler movie Pixels, which features a giant pixelated Donkey Kong as a major boss.

On the television side of things, we have Captain N: The Game Master, an animated series in the same vein as Super Mario Bros. Super Show! starring a kid who got sucked into the video game world and now goes on adventures with a princess, Simon Belmont, Pit, and Mega Man. Mario and Donkey Kong characters appear here and there throughout. Of note, we also have Captain N & The Video Game Masters, which was a collection of Captain N, Super Mario, and Legend of Zelda episodes; and Mario All-Stars, which was a collection of the three different seasons of the Mario cartoon.

Saturday Supercade

SATURDAY SUPERCADE

Today, let's cover the Saturday Supercade, a programming block featuring Hannah-Barbera-esque shorts starring various video game characters prominent specifically in arcade games. Among them were Pac-Man, Q*Bert, and many others, but the only ones we're going to focus on today is the shorts starring Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. respectively.

The Donkey Kong shorts featured Donkey Kong, who had escaped from a circus, being constantly pursued by Mario, the circus owner (voiced by Peter Cullen of Optimus Prime and Eeyore fame), and Pauline his trainer. Mario and Pauline frequently use a number of traps to try and catch Donkey Kong, including a net, a lever, and a rope. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong uses every trick in the book to escape them, including throwing banana peels, swinging on a rope, throwing barrels, roller blading, blowing bubbles, using sails as wings, juggling, swinging on a trapeze, taming a lion, jumping on a seesaw, and using a hoop.

The Donkey Kong Jr. segments star Donkey Kong Jr. (voiced by Frank Welker) as basically a Scrappy Doo knockoff complete with "Monkey Muscle" replacing "Puppy Power," looking for his father after arriving at the circus and finding he had escaped. He is helped in his journey by Bones Bailey, or I suppose you could say, his Shaggy. Donkey Kong Jr. is seen riding a motorcycle, throwing a lasso, pole vaulting, paragliding, and throwing cactus needles. Bones, on the other hand, tends to be a klutz but does manage to hang from a tree branch, throw acorns, pole vault, roll on a trash can, bounce on a mattress, swing on a tire, jump a hurdle, bicycle, swing a purse, skateboard, man a cement mixer, use plungers, toss a giant ball, skate, swing a broom, and ski.

Across all the episodes, there tend to be one-off characters, some who get in and some who don't. Same rules apply as before. First of all, several episodes tend to have a duo+ of villains, who are all different characters, but tend to fall into the pattern of sneaky brains of the operation and big dumb muscle. None of these stand out enough to be on their own, but they're not the same enough to easily combine into one big general group, so I'm just going to ignore them. That cool? Outside of that, those who do stand out include: Maxwell and Boris, toy store owners who developed a shrink ray; Clovis, a movie star orangutan who gets ousted from his role by Donkey Kong and turns to murder, using things such as scissors, an axe, a stick, rope, and sails to take out Donkey Kong; Barney Todd, a rival circus owner who kidnaps Donkey Kong and could act as a catch-all for all those circus things Donkey Kong's got up there; Master Bryan, a lonely rich kid who drives a motor scooter, uses scissors, plays mini-golf, and has a windmill that takes off at one point; Trapper Jack, a wilderness explorer who tries to catch DK with a net and rope; Kid Dynamo, a teenage superhero who can fly, catch falling people, create a whirlwind, spin like a drill, and has a talking dog sidekick; Dr. Demise, Kid Dynamo's nemesis, who flies a helicopter, uses meteor dust to de-power Kid Dynamo, sets up a trapdoor, and uses a blowtorch; the Gorilla Ghost, a crook dressed as a gorilla to steal animals and force them to work in a mine, and throws a rock at Junior at one point; and Lucy Belle, Bone's lookalike cousin. Stanley the Bugman of Donkey Kong 3 also appears, portrayed as a scientist who has developed a super-intelligent Venus Flytrap.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

TV Mario: plungers, wrenches, plumber's snakes, climb with plungers, pizza cutters, pizzas, spaghetti, fire flowers, fireballs, growing giant, invincibility, raccoon tail, frog suit, handstands, toss, chisels, fire flower, spring, cape, inflate, tennis, net, lever, rope

The Super Mario Challenge

THE SUPER MARIO CHALLENGE

Today's will be pretty simple. The Super Mario Challenge was a very short-lived game show hosted by John Lenahan in a cheap Mario costume, wherein two kids would compete with each other by playing levels from various Mario games like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, with goals like reach the end in the fastest time and get the most points. A couple of episode has some celebrity guests, but most of those were pretty obscure even back in the 90s. One of them was named Chris Evans, but it wasn't that one.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

TV Mario: plungers, wrenches, plumber's snakes, climb with plungers, pizza cutters, pizzas, spaghetti, fire flowers, fireballs, growing giant, invincibility, raccoon tail, frog suit, handstands, toss, chisels, fire flower, spring, cape, inflate, tennis

TV Luigi: plungers, wrenches, plumber's snakes, climb with plungers, pizza cutters, pizzas, spaghetti, fire flowers, fireballs, growing giant, invincibility, raccoon tail, frog suit, handstands, toss, chisels, fire flower, spring, cape, inflate, tennis

Donkey Kong Planet

DONKEY KONG PLANET

Donkey Kong Planet was a very short-lived live action segment that went along with the Donkey Kong Country television series that mostly existed to experiment with combining live action with the 3D animation of the show. It starred French actress Melanie Angelie, who hosted alongside and interacted with the 3D models of Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Candy Kong, and Funky Kong. There's not really much else to say. Really, it's just a stepping stone in the history of CGI. I also won't be counting anything for Melanie, as she's a real person and I'd rather save any "moveset potential" for her for a day when I might cover her career as an actress.

Donkey Kong Country, Season Two

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY, SEASON TWO

Today, let's cover the second and final season of the Donkey Kong animated series, and definitely the worse of the two, with a distinct and rather jarring drop in the animation quality and significantly weaker writing (most of the episodes basically boiling down to "Everyone is mad at Donkey Kong for reasons they really shouldn't be mad at him specifically for"). It's also significantly shorter than the first season, likely meaning it was cancelled about halfway through.

Donkey, Diddy, Cranky, Candy, Funky, and Dixie all return, not bringing too much new to the table, as do Bluster Kong and Eddie the Mean Old Yeti, with Bluster developing the ability to shoot lightning from his eyes at one point and Eddie acting as the guardian angel in an "It's a Wonderful Life" parody episode. King K. Rool, Klump, and Krusha all return, all mostly being as awesome as they were before, as do Captain Skurvy and his crewmates.

The most notable one-off character appearing this time, is from what seems to have become the most meme-able episode of the series, in which Donkey Kong gets his brain swapped into the body of a robot he dubs Metal Head. The Metal Head robot can walk around, use a hammer, put together a barrel really fast, stomp heavily, walk on his hands, hop around, and remove his head and toss it around.

Most of the standard locations of the series return, including Cranky's Cabin, Donkey Kong's Cabin, Funky and Candy's boardwalk, Barrel Works, King K. Rool's lair, Skurvy's pirate ship, and the White Mountains.

Here's what we've got so far:

Donkey Kong Country, Season One

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY, SEASON ONE

Today, let's cover the first season of the 3D-animated Donkey Kong Country television series, animated using the same type of engine you might know from Beast Wars or ReBoot. It is likewise pretty batshit insane most of the time, but it does stick to the game source material more than the other series we've covered. That said, it does add in the plot element of Donkey Kong being a sort of chosen one designated to protect a magical relic called the Crystal Coconut, which King K. Rool and his minions intend to steal in order to take over the island.

Donkey Kong is our main character. He can for sure talk in this, instead of just being a big dumb ape as he often is in some games here and there, and he has a laid-back, friendly personality. He is considered the strongest on the island, using his strength to punch and beat up the Kremlings and set off a number of booby traps guarding the coconut. Diddy Kong is his main companion, helping him set off the booby traps and is seen being able to shoot bananas from their peels.

A number of secondary characters appear frequently. Cranky Kong is Donkey Kong's mentor and keeper of the Crystal Coconut, and he is seen being able to perform spells, concoct potions, and teleport himself from place to place. Candy Kong is likewise a strong presence in the series, certainly with more of a personality than the games ever gave her (at least, when she's actually being written well and doesn't exist just to be pissed off at Donkey Kong for flimsy and/or massively unfair reasons). She is shown punching, throwing banana pies in people's faces, and working at the barrel factory, running most of the equipment there.

Funky Kong is also a prominent presence, mostly seen flying his plane around or surfing, which makes him pretty handy when the main characters need to get from place to place. Dixie Kong makes sparse appearances here and there, mostly as another member of the friend group. Last but certainly least, we have the single worst character to ever grace any screen, Sexual Harassment Kong (his name's actually Bluster, but I don't care). S.H. is an egotistical idiot who runs the barrel factory, thus being able to use anything in it. He also smashes a cake onto Candy's head, wields a gun, gains super strength with a potion, and at one point . . . creates a love potion to administer to Candy. He is THE worst.

As for our villains, we have King K. Rool and his two minions Klump and Krusha. King K. Rool frequently employs multiple harebrained schemes to try to get the coconut, with several devices included for the job, including a cannon for firing minions attached to a rope. Klump is, frankly, one of my favorite characters ever, every scene of him made the show just that little bit better, and he more than made up for the existence of Ape-who-shall-not-be-named above. He mostly uses everything K. Rool uses, being that he's in charge of setting it all up. I should note here that they have literal guns that shoot hundreds of tiny Klaptraps. Finally, we have Krusha, who is a precious baby and I love him. He is mostly the muscle of the group. I am really glad I went with my gut to add Klump and Krusha to the roster preemptively. Having now seen the show, it would be really empty without them.

Other recurring characters include Captain Skurvy and his pirate crew, basically stand-ins for Kaptain K. Rool of the second game. His crewmates include Kutlass, Green Kroc, and the parrot Polly Roger. Between them, they can fire cannonballs, use cutlasses, wheel out big old cannons, and use barrels. Another common sighting is Eddie the Mean Old Yeti who lives up in the icy mountains, who swings around a stick, makes fire, roars really loudly, bats snowballs like baseballs, and sends giant ice blocks down the mountain by punching them. There's also Inka Dinka Doo, the idol that chose Donkey Kong to become the coconut's protector.

Finally, I'd like to mention two (sort of) one-off characters. One is Kong Fu, a martial arts master who I thought for sure was Sexual Harassment Kong in disguise until the episode ended and he didn't reveal himself. During the episode, he performs a number of martial arts, swings people around, throws them, and performs karate chops. Then, we have Baby Kong, who appears in one episode as Donkey Kong turned into a baby, then in another episode as a completely different character that Donkey has to babysit (my headcanon is that that episode was supposed to debut Kiddy Kong, but probably due to budget constraints, they weren't allowed to create a new character model, so they had to use an existing one and hope nobody noticed. We noticed). Across these two episodes, Baby Kong rides around on a vacuum, throws things, cries loudly, bites, grabs things and throws them, and punches really hard.

Given the limited nature of the animation, the series only had a handful of locations that most episodes took place on. These include: Cranky's Cabin, where the Crystal Coconut is kept (my pick for a single stage rep if there ever was one); Donkey Kong's cabin in a separate location; King K. Rool's Lair (another good single stage rep); Bluster's Barrel Works; the boardwalk where Funky and Candy both live; Captain Skurvy's galleon; the Mellow Yellow Banana Plantation; the White Mountains where Eddie lives; the Forbidden Forest; and the Temple of Inka Dinka Doo.

Here's what we've got so far:
