THE ADVENTURES OF SUPER MARIO BROS. 3
Today, let's cover the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, or the second season of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Major changes to the series formula included: Lou Albano, Danny Wells, and Jeanie Elias not returning as Mario, Luigi, and the Princess, and thus the live action segments starring Lou and Danny also not returning; the show heavily featuring characters, creatures, and settings from Super Mario Bros. 3 instead of Super Mario Bros. 2; and the characters having a fixed home base and dealing with threats that came their way, rather than traveling willy-nilly to various locations.
Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad all return, some with new voices provided by Walker Boone, Tony Rosato, and Tracey Moore. Across the season, Mario and Luigi use items appearing in SMB3, such as the raccoon tail and the frog suit. At other times, they have performed handstands, tossed each other, and used chisels. Princess Toadstool and Toad are much more distinctly active this time around, with Toadstool using a shrinking wand, surfing, flying a paraglider, and using a P-Wing. Toad likewise surfs, disguises himself as a plant, uses a powerful wand to summon giant pipe creatures, and also uses a P-Wing.
On the villains' side, we have King Koopa, of course, up to a lot of his old nasty tricks. We see him grow gigantic, ride in a giant shoe, and use magic to turn people into dogs. Rather than Mouser, Tryclyde, and Koopa Troopa however, he is instead joined by the Koopalings, albeit mostly radically different from their game counterparts. Cheatsy is Larry, except he's a devious little backstabber now; Big Mouth is Morton, except he's small and loves to talk non-stop rather than being a big dumb bruiser; Kootie Pie is basically still just Wendy; Hip and Hop are Lemmy and Iggy, except they're now twins and basically the babies of the family; Bully is more or less the same as Roy; and Kooky is a bit more on the insane side than I ever took Ludwig to be.
Across the series, we see Cheatsy use a magic wand, turn people into animals and his sister into a human, pull things from a TV, and set up booby traps. Big Mouth has tornado breath and uses a bo staff at one point. Kootie Pie throws a tantrum, throws things, and wraps people up with a scarf. Bully uses nunchaku, a fire hose, and garbage. Finally, Kooky builds a number of inventions for his father, including a time travel machine, a rain machine, the Lame Brainer, a nice spray, the Koopa Doopa raiser-upper, and Goopa. Hip and Hop are mostly just there (They are one of the first ever roles of Tara Strong though. That's neat).
As for the enemies, it's mostly Super Mario Bros. 3 enemies. We see Goombas, Piranha Plants, Boos, Chain Chomps, Hammer, Boomerang, Fire, and Sledge Bros, Bloopers, Bob-Ombs, Rocky Wrenches, Fire Chomps, Fire Snakes, Thwomps, Dry Bones, Boom Boom, and the Angry Sun, mostly doing what we expect them to.
We also have a few one-off characters, though not as much as before. Same rules apply. We have: Prince Hugo the Huge, who is very tall; the First Lady of the United States, quite literally just Barbara Bush; a robo version of the Princess; an ancient mummy, Queen Mushroomkhamen, who throws her staff, stomps, wraps up in tape, and smashes through the wall; the Wizard King of the West, who uses a powerful wand that Toad accidentally uses to cause a lot of trouble and rides on a snail steed; a little brat named Junior being babysat by the Mario brothers, who causes a lot of trouble for them by doing things like dropping a vase, using a boomerang, and catapulting a large boulder at them under the influence of Bully Koopa; the Mighty Plumber, basically just Indiana Jones if he was really into plumbing, using a plunger as a rope, a wrench, causing a burst of water, using a plumber's snake, rafting on a grate, and using a pipe as a battering ram; literally just straight up Godzilla; Toad's wrestling cousins, who roll around and lift weights before being taken out; literally Milli Vanilli (who'd have ever thunk they might know their way around a voice over); a criminal named Crime Wave Clyde who tucks someone up into a basketball at one point, attaches a bob-omb to a chain, and teaches the Koopalings to be criminals; King Windbag, an abusive ruler who gets turned into a dog; and King Mackerel and Holly Mackerel, who are just fish things. That's at least five in there I'm willing to consider.
As for stages, King Koopa has a home base in Castle Koopa and uses his Doomship, based a little too literally on the airship stages from the game. Giant Land, Desert Land, Pipe Maze, Dark Land, Sky Land, and other locations from the game also return, as well as more specific locations in Mushroom House (the heroes' home base), the Ace Magic Wand Factory, the Temple of Gloom, and Mertropolis. We also cross over into the real world a lot (apparently entirely removing a major plot point of Super Show! with the brothers not able to return, and we see locations such as Hawaii, Brooklyn, Hollywood, Miami, Venice, and Paris.
