BIG BERTHA
Today, let us begin a new era of character sheets. Not video game characters this time, but characters appearing in the Super Mario-based movies. We only have a few, but each was distinct enough on their own or from their video game counterparts to warrant a character slot of their own. Let's take a look:
1. Film Mario
2. Film Luigi
3. Film Daisy
4. Prince Haru
5. President Koopa
6. Film Goomba
7. Big Bertha
Today, let's cover Big Bertha! No, not the fish from Super Mario Bros. 3. The very large woman in a spiky dress who runs the Boom Boom Bar of the same name. How the movie makers made that leap, I don't have a clue, but at least I like this character. Bertha was portrayed by Francesca P. Roberts, who is still around and acting, as least as of 2017, although most of her most recent stuff is one-off TV episode roles. So, I guess it's hard to say with her.
Now, Bertha provided the Mario brothers with the equipment they'd go on to use throughout the movie, so it makes sense she'd use a lot of the same stuff. She wouldn't quite be a clone or an echo, just . . . similar. Maybe Villager and Isabelle level, maybe further. She'd definitely have a greater focus on sheer power, as opposed to Luigi's speed and energy, and Mario's slower build. She is also shown to pick up and throw anyone who gets in her way, and throws a massive punch to knock out Koopa Troops throughout the film.
Here's the moveset I came up with:
Standard B: Giant Punch
She will pull back and throw a massive punch, probably of similar strength to one thrown by Donkey Kong or Captain Falcon.
Side B: Pick Up and Throw
She will grab the nearest opponent, heft them up over her head, and chuck them as hard as she can in one fluid movement. She'll have other grabs, but I feel this one deserves to be a special move.
Up B: Super Boots
Being the first shown user of the boots and later the supplier of them to Mario and Luigi, it's only natural she'd use them for her Up B just as Mario and Luigi did.
Down B: Bob-Omb
While I saved this for the Final for the Mario Brothers, I feel she'd be the type to be a bit more cavalier in the use of such a potent item and toss it out as a regular special move.
Final Smash: Big Bertha
Now, maybe this is cheating, but if the filmmakers are going to insist on taking the name of a video game character and attaching it to a practically unrelated character, I'm going to insist on using said video game counterpart as the final move. Big Bertha of the film will hop off the stage, and Big Bertha the fish will jump onto the stage, opening her mouth wide and swallowing up the players there.
Entrance: She'll step out of her office door in the bar and descend the steps.
Taunts: Up, she will snap her fingers for one of her servers to attend to her. Side, she will touch the meteor shard at her chest. Down, I want to use her dance with Mario in some way. Not sure on that one.
Thanks for reading! Now, let's see about a roster.
