Donkey Kong Jr.

If we include a stage for the original arcade game, we can’t forget about its nearly equally popular sequel either. I think the first and most memorable level of the game works best.

The stage will be set in the game’s first setting, a jungle-looking area with a sectioned ground floor parted by sections of water, and an upper section where Mario and Donkey Kong would normally stand. The vines might be usable in some way, but if not, I’d say they can just jostle with the fight going on around them.

Donkey Kong Jr.

The arcade game Donkey Kong proved a rampant success and saw itself a sequel the following year. This time, it starred the great ape’s son as he tried to rescue his father, who was now being kept in a cage by the plumbing hero of the first game.

This is Donkey Kong Jr., an early character who played a prominent role in the landscape of gaming for several years before just dropping off the map altogether. It’s believed that Diddy Kong was originally going to be Junior, but there were licensing issues.

As a fighter, he will be similar in many aspects to his father, or son I suppose, having a lot of strength and speed to him. His moveset will pull primarily from his first appearance, as well as his various subsequent roles and his starring role in Saturday Supercade.

Likelihood rating: Could happen

Character Sheet: Gorilla Ghost

GORILLA GHOST

Now, we have finished the television series, and we have SO many characters to cover, from all across the spectrum. There are a few characters here and there that might get a few upgrades to their movesets, mostly being the Donkey Kong cast (one example, I think Klump should absolutely have a Klaptrap gun now). But, there are so many that are so distinct from their game counterparts, I could only make a brand new slot for them. They are:

Last but not least, for Saturday Supercade at least, is the Gorilla Ghost from the episode of the same name, probably the most "Scooby-Doo" villain to appear in the series. Donkey Kong Jr. and Bones visit a zoo looking for Donkey Kong, only to find the zoo is being terrorized nightly by a "Gorilla Ghost" that abducts the animals one by one. As it turns out, the ghost is actually a henchman of the zookeeper, who have been stealing the animals to work in a mine digging up gold for them (Not exactly a smart plan, but . . .).

Across the episode, we see the ghost and his employer throw rocks to get pursuers off of their trail, whip their animals, catch animals in nets, and use elephants and rhinos to mine. They also have gorillas too supposedly, because locking yourself underground with three really dangerous animals and think you're going to control them by whipping them is totally the most intelligent way to get rich. In the end of the episode, they are caught in a cage, which might be helpful too.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Rock

One of the ghost's main lines of defense when trying to evade capture was to pick up and throw large boulders at Junior and Bones. He'd basically just do that.

Side B: Whip

He would make use of the whip his boss Aurora uses to control the animals in the mine. He would lash out with the whip, doing damage and making his opponent flinch.

Up B: Elephant

This one makes use of one of the main animals stolen by the ghost, and let it get a bit of revenge, per se. The elephant would appear behind the ghost, grab him with its trunk, and fling him upwards.

Down B: Rhino

Another animal used by the pair in their scheme. The rhino will appear beside the ghost, dig its horn in the ground to get at the gold there, and fling upward, striking anyone caught by the horn.

Final Smash: Stampede

Their captive and abused animals will finally get fed up with the ghost and his master. The ghost will look to one side, jump into the air in cartoonish terror, and flee off the stage, pursued by a herd of elephants and rhinos that will demolish anything that gets in their way.

Entrance: He will stalk on screen like he does in the episode.

Taunts: Up, he will hold up a large boulder over his head. Side, he will get chewed out by Aurora. Down, he will dig up a small piece of gold and hold it in his hand.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's begin our Super Show! characters, starting with Mervin the Magician!

52.  Captain Skurvy

Today, we cover the nemesis of Kid Dynamo, the evil mad scientist Dr. Demise. The mad doctor, alongside a henchman, continually cross paths with their pre-teen foe as they attempt to pull off various heists. In the episode, he makes use of a helicopter, trapdoors, a blowtorch, his own henchman's muscle, and dust from the meteor that created Kid Dynamo, taking the hero's powers for a short time. It's not much, but certainly enough.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Meteor Dust

First up, he will blow a cloud of red meteor dust from his hand across an enemy. Rather than simply taking Kid Dynamo's power though, I imagine it would have some similar effect on any player, maybe just disorienting them for a few seconds.

Side B: Henchman

His big beefy henchman will appear beside him and punch with a massive fist. This also serves at least a little to represent all of those bad guy duos from the Supercade series who didn't quite stand out enough to make it in on their own.

Up B: Helicopter

His personal helicopter will appear above him with a small ladder dangling from it. He will grab hold and it will carry him upward.

Down B: Trapdoor

He will press a button and a trap door will appear a short distance in front of him. If on a solid platform, an opponent will be buried. If on a pass-through, the character will drop through to the platform below.

Final Smash: Helicopter Heist

Whereas before he just used the helicopter for a getaway, this move will let him use the helicopter more personally the way he would to pull off a heist. He will pilot the helicopter to buzz the stage, doing damage to anything hit by the blades, while a mechanical arm trails behind, snagging one opponent and carrying them off the stage to their death.

Entrance: He will crash in his plane.

Taunts: Up, evil laugh, what else? Side, he will study a piece of meteor in a capsule. Down, he will look angrily at his henchmen, who will look apologetic.

Thanks for reading! Now, for the final Supercade character, the Gorilla Ghost!

Kid Dynamo: fly, catch, whirlwind, spin, dog sidekick

Today, let's go over Kid Dynamo from the Donkey Kong Jr. episode "Junior Meets Kid Dynamo." Kid Dynamo, or Ricky, is a ten-year-old boy endowed with superpowers at the moment of his birth by the dust of a meteor passing over his head. His family's dog Lightning was also granted heightened intelligence by the same meteor, and he acted as Ricky's sidekick and mentor as they grew. In the episode, Ricky demonstrates super speed and strength, the ability to fly, the ability to whip up whirlwinds, and the ability to spin like a drill. Interaction with red meteor dust deprives him of his powers while blue meteor dust restores them.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Whirlwind

First up, we'll have Ricky perform his whirlwind attack, creating a small whirlwind that will catch opponents inside it and fling them up into the air.

Side B: Drill Spin

Ricky will spin himself like a drill at superfast speed, flying forward and drilling into any opponent in his way.

Up B: Flight

A bit more basic, but Ricky will fly upwards, being able to glide back down afterwards.

Down B: Lightning

His faithful pal Lightning will jump out, biting onto opponents and clinging onto them with all of his might.

Final Smash: Blue Meteor

Ricky will be exposed to blue meteor dust, which will give his powers a temporary boost that he will use to rush around at supersonic speeds, doing heavy damage to anyone he encounters.

Entrance: He will fly in, fixing his towel cape around his neck.

Taunts: Up, he and Lightning will fly up and high-five. Side, he will adjust the towel around his neck. Down, he will rake up some leaves from his backyard.

Bones Bailey is . . . well, he's a Shaggy knockoff created as a companion for Donkey Kong Jr. in the Donkey Kong Jr. segments of the Saturday Supercade. He was a friendly greaser who found Junior looking depressed upon arriving at the circus and finding his father had escaped. Bones gave Junior the encouragement he needed to go after his father, with Bones tagging along on the adventure. He was voiced by Bart Braverman, who seems to have largely retired from voice acting, his last credit being in 2015.

Across the various episodes, Bones is the standard well-meaning but clumsy doofus with a bit of a cowardly side, most of his contributions to the plot being accidentally stumbling into things and causing more trouble for Junior. That said, he does have a few actions to his name that we can pull from. These include: hanging from a tree branch, throwing acorns, pole vaulting, rolling on a trash can, bouncing on a mattress, swinging on a tire, jumping a hurdle, riding a bicycle, smacking with a purse, riding a skateboard, working a cement mixer, using a plunger, rolling on a giant ball, roller skate, smack with a broom, ski, and dress up as his female cousin.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Trash Can

One of his most frequent mishaps, and a move that best represents his clumsy nature, would be him getting stuck up on top of a rolling garbage can, leading to him crashing into something. Basically, the can would appear underneath him and he'd roll on it for a couple of seconds before moving in a certain direction and slamming into the nearest obstacle.

Side B: Roller Skate and Broom

This one is based on one of his focus episode where he dresses up as his cousin. During the chase scene he is rolling around on roller skates and smacking people with a broom. This will be much more controllable, whereas the first would only last as long as they avoid an obstacle and mostly moves on its own.

Up B: Pole Vault

This is based on an episode where Junior trains a bunch of kids to be more physically capable, with Bones following along with it all. One of the moves learned is using a long pole to pole vault themselves up into the air, which he will do.

Down B: Hurdle

He will jump over a hurdle as part of the above-mentioned training regimen, except in true Shaggy-expy fashion, he will trip over it, knocking it over and landing on anything in close proximity to him, doing damage (a little like Isabella's tripping attack).

Final Smash: Monkey Muscle

Now, it's entirely possible that these could be integrated into DK or Junior's movesets, and that's fine, but as Bones is the most notable representative of the Supercade series as a whole, it would work well to have the Supercade versions of DK and Junior appear on screen, shout out their catchphrases ("Monkey Muscle!!!" and "Dooon-Keey Koooong!!!"), and proceed to beat up the opponent in question.

Entrance: He'll pull up on his and Junior's bike and climb out of the sidecar.

Taunts: Up, he will put up his arms and mimic his pal's "Monkey Muscle!" Side, he will rub the back of his neck and look embarrassed. Down, he will slip on a peel and fall, looking around in embarrassment.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover the caveman Oogtar from Super Mario World!

Saturday Supercade

SATURDAY SUPERCADE

Today, let's cover the Saturday Supercade, a programming block featuring Hannah-Barbera-esque shorts starring various video game characters prominent specifically in arcade games. Among them were Pac-Man, Q*Bert, and many others, but the only ones we're going to focus on today is the shorts starring Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. respectively.

The Donkey Kong shorts featured Donkey Kong, who had escaped from a circus, being constantly pursued by Mario, the circus owner (voiced by Peter Cullen of Optimus Prime and Eeyore fame), and Pauline his trainer. Mario and Pauline frequently use a number of traps to try and catch Donkey Kong, including a net, a lever, and a rope. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong uses every trick in the book to escape them, including throwing banana peels, swinging on a rope, throwing barrels, roller blading, blowing bubbles, using sails as wings, juggling, swinging on a trapeze, taming a lion, jumping on a seesaw, and using a hoop.

The Donkey Kong Jr. segments star Donkey Kong Jr. (voiced by Frank Welker) as basically a Scrappy Doo knockoff complete with "Monkey Muscle" replacing "Puppy Power," looking for his father after arriving at the circus and finding he had escaped. He is helped in his journey by Bones Bailey, or I suppose you could say, his Shaggy. Donkey Kong Jr. is seen riding a motorcycle, throwing a lasso, pole vaulting, paragliding, and throwing cactus needles. Bones, on the other hand, tends to be a klutz but does manage to hang from a tree branch, throw acorns, pole vault, roll on a trash can, bounce on a mattress, swing on a tire, jump a hurdle, bicycle, swing a purse, skateboard, man a cement mixer, use plungers, toss a giant ball, skate, swing a broom, and ski.

Across all the episodes, there tend to be one-off characters, some who get in and some who don't. Same rules apply as before. First of all, several episodes tend to have a duo+ of villains, who are all different characters, but tend to fall into the pattern of sneaky brains of the operation and big dumb muscle. None of these stand out enough to be on their own, but they're not the same enough to easily combine into one big general group, so I'm just going to ignore them. That cool? Outside of that, those who do stand out include: Maxwell and Boris, toy store owners who developed a shrink ray; Clovis, a movie star orangutan who gets ousted from his role by Donkey Kong and turns to murder, using things such as scissors, an axe, a stick, rope, and sails to take out Donkey Kong; Barney Todd, a rival circus owner who kidnaps Donkey Kong and could act as a catch-all for all those circus things Donkey Kong's got up there; Master Bryan, a lonely rich kid who drives a motor scooter, uses scissors, plays mini-golf, and has a windmill that takes off at one point; Trapper Jack, a wilderness explorer who tries to catch DK with a net and rope; Kid Dynamo, a teenage superhero who can fly, catch falling people, create a whirlwind, spin like a drill, and has a talking dog sidekick; Dr. Demise, Kid Dynamo's nemesis, who flies a helicopter, uses meteor dust to de-power Kid Dynamo, sets up a trapdoor, and uses a blowtorch; the Gorilla Ghost, a crook dressed as a gorilla to steal animals and force them to work in a mine, and throws a rock at Junior at one point; and Lucy Belle, Bone's lookalike cousin. Stanley the Bugman of Donkey Kong 3 also appears, portrayed as a scientist who has developed a super-intelligent Venus Flytrap.
