Yoshi's Safari

Much like the gimmick games of Topsy-Turvy and Touch & Go, Yoshi also saw a game under his name that made use of the Super Scope peripheral released for the SNES, which featured Mario riding Yoshi on their way to help a neighboring kingdom in trouble, using the Super Scope to shoot down flying enemies in Yoshi’s way.

This stage will more or less recreate that, with Yoshi’s head replaced by a long green platform a la Mute City style, traversing a standard Yoshi’s Safari course as enemies approach from the background. When they reach the stage, they can be hit by players and vice versa.

Character Sheet: Kamek (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

KAMEK

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)

11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Today, let's cover Kamek. Kamek appears in Yoshi's Safari, Tetris Attack, and Yoshi Touch & Go as a boss character, mostly behaving the way he normally does: teleporting, flying around on a broom, and casting spells. Not much to work with, but it is what it is.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Magic Spell

Side B: Broomstick

Up B: Teleport

Down B: Hammer

Final Smash: Boss Battle

Entrance: Swoop in on his broom and do his little chuckle.

Taunts: Hold up his wand and wave it around for a second, is a good one. His chuckle, as mentioned before. Maybe cast a little magic and surprise himself.

Next up: Let's go over the Shy Guys!

2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)

10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

We finally get to Yoshi, the star of the show! He appeared in all of the games this time around, obviously, although some definitely felt more like Mario games than Yoshi games. In Yoshi, he really just hatches from the eggs you form. In Yoshi's Cookie, he mostly appears in cutscenes playing with balls of dough. In Yoshi's Safari, Mario rides him across set tracks. In Tetris Attack, he is one of the many characters appearing along the side that you are "supposedly" playing as. Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy and Yoshi Touch & Go he plays a bit more normally, although it is more or less the general Yoshi moveset.

Here's his moveset!

Standard B: Egg Lay

Side B: Egg Shot

Up B: Helicopter

Down B: Ground Pound

Final Smash: Yoshi Herd

Entrance: He hatches from an egg.

Taunts: That cute little dance he does when he completes a level would be a pretty good one. Honestly, a lot of his cute movements and behaviors would work. The same goes for his new games. Cute is definitely a good descriptor here.

Next up: Let's take care of Baby Mario!

Character Sheet: Chargin' Chuck (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

CHARGIN' CHUCK

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Chargin' Chuck appears as a boss in Yoshi's Safari, where he jumps and slams, and throws rocks at you. At least he's not just charging for twice.

Here's the moveset:

Standard B: Baseball Pitch

Side B: Charge

Up B: Jump and Clap

Down B: Dig

Final Smash: Team Blitz

Entrance: He will charge through a block

Taunts: You could probably pull a few from actual football and other sports. Like a war dance, or a huddle, or the lineup position, and so on.

Next up: Let's start in on the Yoshi series revisions!

Friday, March 20, 2020

Character Sheet: Monty Mole (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

MONTY MOLE

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Monty Mole's pretty easy too. It pops up, quite literally, a couple of times in Yoshi's Safari, and that's pretty much it.

Not much moveset differences, but here's what it looks like:

Standard B: Bob-Omb

Side B: Bullet Bill

Up B: Pop Up

Down B: Tuck In

Final Smash: Monty Tank

Entrance: Pop out of a hole in the side of a cliff (or wrapping paper).

Taunts: Crouch down inside the tank and glance around. Maybe make his little squeak noise.

Next up: We'll finish up the Mario series revisions with Chargin' Chuck!

Thursday, March 19, 2020

Character Sheet: Lakitu and Spinies (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

LAKITU AND SPINIES

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Lakitus only have a couple of appearances this time around, appearing in Yoshi's Safari a bit, and in Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy and Yoshi's Touch and Go, mostly acting as they always do. That's about it here!

Here is his moveset again:

Standard B: Spiny

Side B: Fishing Rod

Up B: Cloud Poof

Down B: Lightning

Final Smash: Lakithunder

Entrance: Floats down from above with its iconic sound.

Taunts: We haven't covered the Mario Kart series yet, but it's 3-2-1 opening makes a lot of sense, or maybe waving the flag at the end of a lap. Also tucking down behind his cloud and shifting his eyes back and forth for a second. Maybe pulling out a camera and checking its quality?

Next up: Let's cover Monty Mole!

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Character Sheet: Blooper (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

BLOOPER

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Not much to say here. Blooper is one of the enemies that falls from the sky in Yoshi, and appears in the water levels of Yoshi's Safari. That's it!

Here is the moveset:

Standard B: Ink

Side B: Surf

Up B: Inkjet

Down B: Tentacle Slap

Final Smash: Gooper Blooper

Entrance: Maybe float onto the stage, referencing how they can fly in The Lost Levels.

Taunts: Ink a little the way they do in Mario Kart. Wave a tentacle around. Float upward in the same animation from the original games.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover the Lakitu enemy!

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Character Sheet: Boo (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

BOO

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Boo is pretty basic here. He appears in Yoshi's Safari as an enemy and in Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy, mostly in the spirit of fright stages. That's it.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Obake Candlestick

Side B: Bomb Boo

Up B: Boo String

Down B: Vanish

Final Smash: Roulette

Entrance: Appears out of nowhere

Taunts: Just the basic cover-your-face animation. That screech of theirs needs to be included too. When they flash and show off a blue coin for sure.

Next up: Let's cover the Bloopers!

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Character Sheet: Goomba (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

GOOMBA

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Basically, Goombas appear as some of the falling items in Yoshi, and as Paragoombas in Yoshi's Safari. That's pretty much it.

Here is the moveset again:

Standard B: Goom Spear

Side B: Kuribo's Shoe

Up B: Paragoomba

Down B: Stack Up

Final Smash: Goomboss

Entrance: Pops out of chestnut shell.

Taunts: The little hop around and squeak from Super Mario 64 for sure.

Next up: Let's check out Piranha Plant.

Friday, March 13, 2020

Character Sheet: Koopa Troopa (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

KOOPA TROOPA

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Today, let's go over the Koopa Troopa enemy. Koopas' main appearance is in the game Yoshi's Safari, where Paratroopas are the most frequent enemy, and a regular Koopa appears as a boss fight (yes, I know, weird, right?) piloting his own giant mech firing projectiles. We'll see what it really adds.

Here is the character's moveset:

Standard B: Shell Projectile

Side B: Shell Spin

Up B: Paratroopa

Down B: Shell Tuck

Final Smash: Koopa Mech
Since he didn't really have a Final Smash that was really his own, I figure this can act in that capacity. His mech from Yoshi's Safari will rise in the background, firing projectiles at the stage.

Entrance: Starts out in his shell, before emerging using the standard animation

Taunts: Giving a thumbs up and making the iconic Koopa sound, stepping outside of his shell and looking it over while in his underwear, maybe sleeping like a Snooza Koopa.

Next up: Let's cover the Goomba!

Thursday, March 12, 2020

Character Sheet: The Koopalings (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

THE KOOPALINGS

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Today, let's cover the Koopalings, who appear as bosses in Yoshi's Safari. Across all of their fights, they fought in giant mechs more or less to function with the Super Scope's abilities, with them popping out occasionally, and you having to snipe them when they do. They frequently threw bombs at you as well. Not much to say, though the mechs might give some consideration to the Final Smash.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Magic Ring

Side B: Bullet Bill Blaster

Up B: Bouncy Ball

Down B: Giant Hammer

Final Smash: Airships
Gonna keep this, it's far more connected to the characters than the mechs of this game.

Entrance: The whole Koopaling crew will descend in their giant Klown Kar, and the one selected by the player will hop off onto the stage.

Taunts: Varies depending on the Koopaling.

Next up: Let's cover the Koopa Troopas.

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Character Sheet: Bowser (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

BOWSER

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Today, let's cover Bowser a bit. He appears several times actually in this round of games, appearing as an alt baker in Yoshi's Cookie, and the main villain in Yoshi's Safari, Tetris Attack, and Yoshi's Topsy-Turvy. Across all of these games, he is seen piloting a giant mech, stomping, throwing shells, breathing fire, casting spells, and dropping enemies to attack you. Plus all the basic Tetris Attack stuff. Not much new, just your standard Bowser really.

Let's see what we've got:

Standard B: Fire Breath

Side B: Boulders

Up B: Shell Spin

Down B: Slam Down

Final Smash: Giant Bowser

Entrance: Bowser will land in his Koopa Klown Kar.

Taunts: His evil laugh from Super Mario 64, many of his taunts from Odyssey and other games, holding up a captive something or other, the list goes on.

Next up: Let's cover the Koopalings!

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Character Sheet: Princess Peach (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

PRINCESS PEACH

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Today's going to be an easy one. Basically, Princess Peach is an alternate for Mario in Yoshi's Cookie, and acts as an NPC in Yoshi's Safari. Hit the "That was easy" button.

Here is her moveset:

Standard B: Toadsworth

Side B: Parasol Smack

Up B: Parasol

Down B: Vegetable

Final Smash: Music Box

Entrance: She floats down from the sky on her parasol.

Taunts: Her kiss of Mario at the end of many games could be one, a lot of her small movements throughout her cutscenes perhaps, some of her victory screens from Super Mario 3D World maybe.

Next up: It's Bowser time.

Monday, March 9, 2020

Character Sheet: Mario (Yoshi Miscellaneous)

MARIO

Today, let's begin our last round of Yoshi games with the character updates. It will be almost all revisions this time, but it shouldn't be too many. Here we go:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Princess Peach (Revision)
3. Bowser (Revision)
4. The Koopalings (Revision)
5. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
6. Goomba (Revision)
7. Piranha Plant (Revision)
8. Boo (Revision)
9. Blooper (Revision)
10. Lakitu and Spinies (Revision)
11. Monty Mole (Revision)
12. Chargin' Chuck (Revision)
13. Yoshi (Revision)
14. Baby Mario (Revision)
15. Baby Bowser (Revision)
16. Kamek (Revision)
17. Shy Guy (Revision)
18. Ukiki (Revision)
19. Wiggler

Not much to say for Mario here. Everything he did was mostly in conjunction with the games he appeared in. He held and switched around the plates in Yoshi, pumped the lever and played with dough in Yoshi's Cookie, and shot down enemies with a Super Scope in Yoshi's Safari, none of which is inherently unique to Mario himself.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Fireball

Side B: Cape

Up B: Item Box

Down B: Mario Tornado

Final Smash: Mega Mushroom

Entrance: Pops up from a warp pipe.

Taunts: Still okay with his various Smash taunts as most of them are reflected in game.

Next up, let's cover Princess Peach real quick!

Thursday, March 5, 2020

Yoshi's Safari

YOSHI'S SAFARI

Today, it's time to drift a little away from puzzle games and cover another Yoshi spinoff game, Yoshi's Safari. Created for the SNES to work with the Super Scope, the game featured Mario and Luigi, traveling to save King Fret and Prince Pine of the faraway Jewel Kingdom from Bowser and his minions. The game featured Yoshi traveling along a set path, while numerous flying enemies came toward him, with Mario riding his back and using the Super Scope to shoot them out of the sky.

So, obviously, this adds a super scope to Mario's abilities, and running and jumping to Yoshi's. Princess Peach, King Fret, and Prince Pine are all basically NPCs, so don't worry about it. And then we have Bowser who pilots a giant mechanical suit, stomps, and throws shells at you. The Seven Koopalings also pilot their own mechs, except for Wendy who pops out of pipes and throws bombs, and Roy who flies in a hot air balloon. Other bosses include a Koopa in another giant mech, Kamek who teleports and casts spells, a Big Boo who throws rocks and can split into three, and a Chargin' Chuck who also throws rocks and jumps into the air to slam down.

The enemies in the game include Paratroopas and Paragoombas, Lakitus, Bob-Ombs on parachutes, and Boos. For non-flying varieties, we also have Cheep Cheeps and Bloopers, Monty Moles, Mechakoopas, and octopus-like enemies called Octos.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:
Mario: hold and switch around plates, pump switches, play with dough, super scope
Yoshi: hatch from egg, play with dough, throw egg, play Tetris Attack, drop blocks, run, jump
Peach: pump switches
Bowser: pump switches, giant mech, stomp, throw shells
Koopalings: mechs, pipes, throw bombs
Kamek: teleport, cast spells
Koopa: giant mech, wings
Goomba: wings
Piranha Plant
Boo: throw rocks
Blooper
Lakitu
Poochy
Grinder
Wiggler: fly, Egg-odil partner
Shy Guy: fire guy
Chargin' Chuck: jump and slam, throw rocks

Stages:
A stage based on the game, with switching platforms and falling eggs?
This probably helped inspire Cookie Land-type stages that came later, so . . . that?
A stage based on this game perhaps

Items:
Yoshi Eggs
Ball of Dough
Cookies
Panels
Blocks

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover Yoshi's Safari!
