SUPER MARIO ADVENTURES
If you ever read any comic, manga, or book based on the Super Mario Bros. series, I personally recommend this one. The writing, the art, the characterization of the various characters, the storyline, all of it, is about as good as you're going to get it. To be honest, if I made a Mario movie, I'd be strongly tempted to consider using it as a storyboard. The only thing I'd get rid of is a really uncomfortable two-page masseuse scene early on that could easily be removed without much trouble. Check it out if you get the chance. The YouTube channel "Dub Matters" recorded a voiced dub of it that's very professionally done.
Super Mario Adventures, written by Kentaro Takekuma, mostly tells the story of Super Mario World. It features all of the major characters you'd expect to appear, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, and the Koopalings, plus sizeable encounters with most of the most iconic enemies. It does introduce one original character, a traveling salesman named Friendly Floyd, but he mostly acts as a mouthpiece to explain the Yoshis and to provide the items the other characters use later. Outside of that, he doesn't do that much, but we'll see.
And I think that's about all I have to say about it. Here's what we've got so far:
Characters:
Mario
Luigi
Princess Peach
Toad
Yoshi
Bowser
Koopalings
Friendly Floyd: salesman, items
Stages:
Super Mario World locations
