As for manga and comics, Mario has seen a wide variety of publications both east and west, none more famous or long-running than Super Mario-Kun. Like most manga, it has a free-floating panel structure rather than the set arrangements of, say, newspaper comics or yonkoma comics.
The stage will be huge and set on a comic page from the Super Mario-Kun manga, with characters and scenes from the manga appearing on the panels. The bottom edges of the panels will act as plaforms, each panel coming to life any time a character stands inside it, often causing effects on the battle.
Potential theme: Uh . . . comics don’t have music. I—I don’t know what to do here.
