As the series headed into its finale, a Nightmare Enterprises spaceship appeared in the sky above Cappy Town, releasing from its base a squad of elite fighters.

As fighter, the four main kinds of Air Riders will act as color swaps, with strong aerials thanks to their vehicles. Their moveset will pull from all their various abilities.

In a rather heavy-handed episode about the dangers of energy drinks, King Dedede starts selling energy drinks from Nightmare Enterprises, which ends up sending the residents into a frenzy. This all ends up being a ploy to trick Kirby into drinking a fake that will make him crash, just in time for a monster to arrive to finish him off.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Doctor Yabui

DOCTOR YABUI

Another Cappy in Cappy Town who just managed to be notable enough to warrant his own moveset is the town’s local physician and part-time dentist.

This is Doctor Yabui, to whom the entire town turns to for all forms of medical treatment. Though he is a bit on the crazy side, he is a generally helpful and kind member of the community.

As a fighter, Doctor Yabui’s moveset will pull from all of his medical and dental implements as shown throughout his episodes. He will be a bit middling, like the other Cappies, if a little bit less of a trained fighter.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

ELECTRONIC PET

As a fighter, Chef Shiitake will be powerful and deliberate in his attacks, reflecting his stern teaching style. His moveset will pull from all the distinct cooking styles shown by him and his students in the series.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Melman

MELMAN

Another common sight around town is Melman, the elderly mailman.

Though Melman is typically portrayed as senile and slow in his old age, he is eventually revealed to be Steppenwolf, the same legendary biker who led Gus to change his life, coming out of retirement briefly to help Gus in a race.

As a fighter, Melman will be primarily in his Steppenwolf get-up, using his bike to lend him a lot more speed than you’d expect. He will be an echo of Gus, using a lot of the same moves.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Gus

GUS

At the local gas station in town, a common sight is the station’s attendant and local mechanic, Gus.

As we learn in a later episode of the series, Gus used to be a member of a motorcycle gang until an encounter with the legendary biker Steppenwolf led him to change his lifestyle and quit the gang.

As a fighter, Gus will use his motorcycle to get around, lending him a lot of extra speed and strength. His moveset will pull mainly from his biker episode, but with a little extra from his gas station.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Professor Curio

PROFESSOR CURIO

Another notable Cappy is the town’s local archaeologist, Professor Curio.

Like Chief Bookem, Professor Curio has a number of notable episodes to his name, which often feature the town discovering some ancient artifact from their ancient history and him studying and teaching them all about it.

As a fighter, Curio will be a bit on the slower side from his fellow Cappies, being a bit less active overall. His moveset will pull from his major episodes and his standard archaeology implements.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Chief Bookem

CHIEF BOOKEM

Though many of the Cappies were generic enough to be lumped into one group, a few stood out just enough on their own to earn their own spot.

The first of these is the local chief of police, Chief Bookem. Though he initially claims to have once been a soldier in a recent war, he turns out to be a fraud, but still proves his courage as a hero and protector to his fellow townspeople.

As a fighter, Bookem will be similar to his fellow Cappies, if a bit heavier with more strength behind them. His moveset will pull from his more notable episodes and standard actions.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Friday, June 21, 2024

Tuff

TUFF

Close in age to Tiff is her little brother Tuff.

Tuff is much more rambunctious and physically active than his more bookish sister. He is a close friend to Kirby as well, often helping him out in fights and playing sports with him.

As a fighter, Tuff will have a bit more strength to him than his sister, and decent speed. His moveset will pull from his various actions across the series.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Tiff

TIFF

Living in the castle alongside King Dedede and Escargoon are the chamberlain Sir Ebrum and his wife Lady Like. Ebrum and Like have two small children.

The eldest of these children is Tiff, a smart and spunky young girl who is always the first to call out King Dedede’s crap. She becomes Kirby’s first friend and constant companion throughout the series.

As a fighter, Tiff will be about middling in terms of stats, with a good bit of speed to her and a lot of support-type moves. Her moveset will pull from her various actions across the series.

Likelihood rating: Non-game.

Escargoon

ESCARGOON

The Cappies of Cappy Town were regularly enduring attacks by monsters ordered from Nightmare Enterprises by their self-appointed king Dedede and his personal sycophant.

This sycophant is named Escargoon, a power-greedy snail who endures a lot of abuse for the sake of being able to say he’s the king’s number two. He accompanies King Dedede in most of his schemes, thus having access to anything he does.

As a fighter, Escargoon will be a bit on the slow slide, but a bit more mobile than you’d expect. His moveset will pull from he and King Dedede’s various shenanigans.

In 2001, an anime was released based on the Kirby series. The series featured Kirby as an infant star warrior, a race of heroes and enemies of the evil Nightmare Enterprises. The series begins as Kirby crashlands in a place called Cappy Town.

While in the games, Cappies are bouncy little mushroom guys. In the anime, however, they are generic blobs who acts as the standard NPCs of the series, many of them recurring.

As fighters, their color swaps will represent Mayor Len Blustergast, Hana Blustergast, Buttercup, Mabel, Samo, Gangu, Tuggle, Iro, Honey, and Spikehead. They are middling to low in terms of their stats, and their moveset will pull from all their collective hobbies and habits.

Kirby Stage Roster

KIRBY SERIES STAGE ROSTER

And here's all the stages for the games. If this were a real game, which would you choose to play on first?

World of Drawcia

WORLD OF DRAWCIA

Finally, Kirby: Canvas Curse had the unique aesthetic of having the entire game look like an oil painting.

Naturally, the stage for the game must represent that. It will be set on platforms in the air, with a pristine painting in the background, and new temporary platforms being drawn by an imaginary player all the time.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RakOS9nBpLk

Tilt 'n' Tumble

TILT 'N' TUMBLE

Kirby’s Tilt ‘n’ Tumble was another of the earliest spinoffs that made use of Kirby’s ball shape, this time setting it on a large, tilting maze in the sky, where you’d have to guide Kirby’s rolling by controlling the tilt to get him through it.

Naturally then, the stage will be set in the sky on a series of platforms based on the levels in the game, all of which can tilt in various directions.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5QbhJe6wic

Strawberry Mountain

STRAWBERRY MOUNTAIN

Kirby’s Dream Buffet had the unique aesthetic of setting the entire game on mountains and mountains of delicious food, and letting Kirby just roll through all of it.

This stage will represent that, generally, but will specifically place you on the giant strawberry shortcake from the very beginning. It will be a large stage, with lots of different areas for battling.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UNvx_teKmI

Star Stacker

STAR STACKER

Kirby’s Star Stacker is a Tetris-like puzzle game among the spinoffs of the Kirby series, represented already in part by the Green Greens stage from Melee.

As a stage, I’d rather be a bit more simple, setting it within the game screen, with the various blocks acting as platforms, constantly falling and forming into new formations, bombs occasionally taking out sections and the player with it.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BkB7Z9ChIw

Stage of Destined Rivals

STAGE OF DESTINED RIVALS

While the Kirby Fighters series acted more or less as a Smash series of its own, proving quite helpful to me, actually, as I was putting this roster together. Still, it deserves a stage of its own, and I find the final stage where Kirby faces King Dedede and Meta Knight a perfectly fitting one.

As a stage, it will be more or less recreated from the game in all its glory, complete with statues of Kirby’s two rivals, perfectly flat as a Final Destination of sorts.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2q3rH-G_y8

Squeaks' Hideout

SQUEAKS' HIDEOUT

While Kirby: Squeak Squad didn’t have too much in terms of unique locations, instead standing out through its use of four recurring foes who would antagonize you throughout the levels, there was occasionally an event where you’d have to fight one of them in a secret chamber full of stolen treasure.

This stage would mostly represent that, as it is the best way to represent the Squeaks in the way of a stage. The stage would be set within this chamber, with the stolen treasure giving you terrain here and there.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k4LPtRPA68

Springy-Hand Land

SPRINGY-HAND LAND

I always have one or two I sneak in, just because I really like the concept of them. This time, it’s Springy-Hand Land, a stage concept seen a few times across the 2.5D games that came out during the 3DS era, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, and would also be featured as a stage in the Fighters series.

This stage would remain mostly as is from its appearance in the fighters series, featuring the row of giant hands on springs in the background that would periodically spring out to the foreground and take out anyone in their path.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3-yM9V19lA

Seventopia

SEVENTOPIA

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse’s story featured a sculptor named Claycia stealing all the color from Dream Land to give it to the worlds she has constructed, named Seventopia after the seven colors of the rainbow, all connected by a rainbow.

This stage would be a horizontally scrolling stage set on the rainbow connecting Seventopia, with sections based on each world every couple of screens.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au7sjTQHvT4

Ripple Star

RIPPLE STAR

Kirby 64 had a rather unique aesthetic, as the game made sure to highlight the 3D nature of the game, despite still being a 2D sidescroller. This tended to come in the form of curving paths and circular towers and such that would twist as Kirby moved along them.

I think that’s the most important aspect to really represent here. I went with Ripple Star, Ribbon’s home world, as the planet itself is a striking visual, so it could be set on the ring around it, but it could also be set down on the planet itself, on a tower or somewhere in the city that will allow for some fun background 3D visual effects.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GleWK8NOmUk

Rainbow Route

RAINBOW ROUTE

Perhaps the most iconic location in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is a sort of central hub world full of mirrors that Kirby has to cross back and forth through at multiple points.

The stage would literally be set within this world, in the main plaza area where the titular mirror is front and center. Here and there, enemies and characters from the game would be reflected in these mirrors, but it would be otherwise peaceful.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y1Sv_PSKgc

Monday, June 17, 2024

Popopo Islands

POPOPO ISLANDS

Kirby: Mass Attack was another gimmick spinoff, set on a series of small islands that Kirby was carried to and from on a blimp manned by the Squeak Squad.

This stage would be a constant touring stage, traveling around the Popopo Islands, with the islands appearing in the background, while the fight takes place on an open version of the Squeak Squad’s blimp.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oMMP0Os_5A

Pinball Land

PINBALL LAND

Given Kirby’s ball shape, one might suppose a pinball game featuring him as the ball is a natural spinoff to make.

As such, this stage will reflect that, being set on a pinball table based on those in the game, with the bumpers and flippers causing problems for the players.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F4gG7rXw1s

Patch Land

PATCH LAND

Kirby’s Epic Yarn had the distinct gimmick of being set entirely within a world of yarn, with slightly bouncy terrain and various elements related to sewing forming various landmarks.

This stage would reflect that, with the players being able to effect specific parts of the stage and the terrain being a bit on the bouncy side.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr6xX7XikDM

Lor Starcutter

LOR STARCUTTER

In Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, the central focus of most of the game was collecting the parts for Magolor’s inter-dimensional ship, the Lor Starcutter, which they then use to fly to Magolor’s home.

This is the most natural option for a stage representing the game. The stage would be set on the deck of the Starcutter as it flies through the same interdimensional void the final battle took place in. Certain parts of the stage are breakable after taking enough damage.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3pcbkxIy0A

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Kirby's Avalanche

KIRBY'S AVALANCHE

Kirby’s Avalanche is basically just a reskin of Puyo Puyo, in the same vein as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, just with Kirby elements added to the background.

Still, a stage representing this game is always welcome. It would be set within one of the main game zones, with platforms where the fighters can play, the gummy Popon things falling from the sky.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39HlzSrtMko

Jambastion

JAMBASTION

Star Allies came with one main distinctly unique location, the Jambastion, a giant space station with a curving outer wall where Lord Hyness and the Mage Sisters carried out their operations.

The stage representing this would be set on the Jambastion’s outer wall, not quite moving the way Butter Building would be, but carrying the fighters with its curve, so they get views of space and Dream Land during their fight. The stage would also have walk-off boundaries.

Possible theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS16xTk5RSc
