Lulu

The Wario Ware series would see multiple entries throughout the years, each time bringing back its colorful cast of characters with new unique mechanics, including a D.I.Y. game that let you design your own microgames, and a semi-spinoff in Game & Wario. In 2018, the series released Wario Ware Gold, one of the last games developed for the 3DS. The game’s story saw Wario stealing a precious treasure from the nearby Luxeville, only for him to then be challenged by a little girl determined to get it back.

This is Lulu, the hero of Luxeville who set out to take down Wario after he stole their community toilet. She would appear throughout the story of the game, eventually facing him in a showdown at the game’s end. Despite this history, she would apparently agree to work as one of his developers in the next game.

As a fighter, Lulu will have average stats, with a lot of good speed and aerials but not much power. Her moveset will pull from the various tools and weapons she uses against Wario in Gold as well as her ability to fly with her bow in Get It Together.

Let's begin our character sheets for our Wario Ware characters. Although it felt a little touch and go there, with most gameplay not being tied to the characters themselves, each one did do enough across the nine games to warrant their inclusion, with the only one I really had to fudge a little being Mike. (At that point, with everyone else in, it just felt a little wrong to leave him out). Either way, here they are:

Today, let's finish things off with Lulu. Lulu was introduced in Wario Ware: Gold as a story-relevant character who didn't act as a host but rather an antagonist for Wario. She hails from Luxeville, where Wario stole the . . . ahem, toilet. After his theft, Lulu set out on a quest to take it back, proclaiming herself the hero of Luxeville. Throughout the game, we are treated to cutscenes of her preparing to take on Wario, culminating in a final boss battle with him.

Her moveset seems simple at first with her using a squirt gun and arrows as her main weapons and floating around on a balloon a few times. You might even toss in Ruffington, the dog she befriends in her cutscenes, but it still doesn't quite seem like enough, but then you remember the superpowers the toilet somehow gave Wario, including the ability to fly and throw lightning, and then you think she just might have a shot.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Squirt Gun
She will charge up her squirt gun and fire a blast of water across the stage at her opponents.

Side B: Bow and Arrow
This one will be based on the bow and arrow she uses to fight Wario, and will function much like Link's.

Up B: Balloon
A balloon will pop out and carry her up into the air, similar to Villager's own move.

Down B: Ruffington
Ruffington the dog will lunge out and latch himself onto the opponent's leg, growling and fighting to protect his new friend.

Final Smash: Treasure of Luxeville
She will place the golden toilet atop her head, which will give her all the powers granted to Wario during their boss fight. She will float into the air, start to glow, and shoot lightning from her hands at all of her opponents.

Entrance: Maybe just standing all tough and shouting "I'm gonna get you!"

Taunts: Hugging Ruffington, training her skills with a target, maybe dancing around like she needs to use the restroom, so on.

Wario Ware: Gold

WARIO WARE: GOLD

And now, we come to the end of our run of Wario Ware games with Wario Ware: Gold, one of the last games release for the 3DS. The game's story revolves around Wario stealing a powerful treasure (toilet) from a distant village and holding a tournament with the treasure as the grand prize, only for a young girl named Lulu to strike out on a quest to get it back. Most of our crew returns, with full voice acting for all of them this time.

Wario's games are all the basic beginner stuff to get you used to the game, including holding a door, dodging a spotlight, stomping a Goomba, focusing a camera, pumping iron, pulling his mouth to catch stuff, slicing fruits, and stirring coffee. At the end of the game, he faces off with Lulu as the final boss, placing the treasure (toilet) on his head which somehow gives him superpowers (I don't want to know what that village had been eating). He then floats, throws lightning, and takes off in a balloon throne.

Jimmy's story involves a cat getting into his afro, prompting a bunch of girls to want to take pictures with him. His games are all sports-related, as is common, including fencing, shooting hoops, bouncing a ball, doing squats, lifting weights, jumping hurdles, passing a baton, jumping rope, and making a goal.

Mona's story sees her shopping for a dress to wear to a party that she later invites Gelato Joe to. Her game's are all called "That's Life" which honestly seems a better descriptor than "Strange." They include covering a cat with an umbrella, picking a nose, avoiding another pedestrian, pouring hot water, squirting ketchup, counting moles, finding a bathroom stall, catching a cookie, squirting eyedrops, and hammering a nail.

Dribble and Spitz's story sees them driving their taxi through outer space after dropping off a passenger getting attacked by flying saucers. They fend them off using their octobazooka. Their games are all "fantasy"-themed, including finding treasure, avoiding meteors, beating an octopus, hopping from clouds, steering a leaf, and sidestepping arrows.

9-Volt's mother 5-Volt gets her own set of games this time around. Her story features her watching an infomercial about a new frying pan and learning the workout needed to lift the thing, resulting in her gaining super strength. Her games are much like her son's, all being based around Nintendo games. These include Donkey Kong Country, Balloon Fight, Super Mario Kart, Mario Clash, Ocarina of Time, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Land, and Fire Emblem.

The game is divided into three groups, the Mash League, the Twist League, and the Touch League. While Mona, Jimmy, Dribble and Spitz, and 5-Volt were part of the Mash League, the next group lead the Twist League. Ashley's story features her summoning a starving demon, deducing it is the work of the demon Hum Gree, and entering her book to fight and defeat him. Her games are also "fantasy" like Dribble and Spitz, including sliding the moon, shaving the Earth, catching a butterfly, disarming an opponent, reflecting light, lighting a candle, running from a monster, and lowering a bridge.

Dr. Crygor's story sees him and Mike wandering through the woods in search of mushroom when they are attacked by a disgruntled maid robot named Doris 1. Crygor covers the sports games just like Jimmy, including arm wrestling, golfing, hula dancing, synchronized swimming, skiing, rock climbing, surfing, and shooting a watermelon.

In 18-Volt's story, he comes across a bully named 13-Amp and challenges her to a rap battle. His games are also Nintendo-related, including Super Mario World, Wind Waker, Donkey Kong Jr., Metroid, Golf, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Stack-Up, Dr. Mario, Super Metroid, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario Bros.

Penny's story sees her creating a "tonally transformative elixir" to give herself the voice of a pop star and trying it on her grandfather, resulting in him getting a stomachache. She covers the "That's Life" games, including shaving a beard, playing violin, trimming pigtails, balancing a ruler, extracting a tooth, sweeping leaves, sharpening a pencil, sewing, squeezing toothpaste, and tuning the radio.

Kat and Ana start off the Touch League with the "That's Life" category. Their story sees them going to take the test to get their Ninja learner's permits, but getting confused and entering an eating challenge instead. Their games include dragging a paper clip, unrolling toilet paper, tracing a kanji, poking birds, playing piano, threading a needle, ironing clothes, and grating a carrot.

9-Volt covers the Nintendo category of course, his story featuring him and his pet Fronk realizing he can do math if he thinks of it like an RPG. His games include Mii Maker, Donkey Kong, Nintendogs, Excitebike, just Cheep Cheeps, Wrecking Crew, Link Between Worlds, Amiibo, and finding the stylus.

Young Cricket covers the Sports category, with Cricket and Master Mantis visiting an amusement park to "train" themselves on the rides. His games include passing a ball, skiing, curling, doing situps, taking off clothes, riding a horse, doing a chin-up, swimming, and bowling.

Orbulon covers the fantasy games, and his story features him becoming obsessed with a fast food chain's hamburgers and ordering them until they run out. Wanting to help, he goes an abducts a bunch of pigs from a farm so that they will have enough "ham" to make the burgers, only to discover his mistake and keep the pigs as friends. (Have I mentioned, I really like the characters in this series. They're great.) Anyway, his game include throwing shurikens, spotting a ghost, tickling a pig, watering a flower, inflating a camel, and finding a thief.

At the end of the game, you have two Ultra League sets, with Mona, Penny, and Kat and Ana of the "That's Life" sets, and Jimmy, Dr. Crygor, and Young Cricket of the Sports sets, all dancing in a nightclub as you play through a mix of their games; and 9-Volt, 18-Volt, and 5-Volt of the Nintendo sets and Ashley, Dribble and Spitz, and Orbulon of the Fantasy sets having pot-luck picnic with each other. Mike and Fronk act sort of like the hosts of these games.

Finally, I must talk about Lulu. Obviously everything Wario can do with the toilet on his head could probably be attributed to Lulu as she comes from the village the treasure is from so could probably use it if she wants to. She is also shown using a squirt-gun, the Hydrocannon LX, and arrows against Wario, twisting to remove his crown, and floating on a balloon. She also makes friends with a dog, Ruffington, and takes a nap on him, and forces Young Cricket into a piggyback ride, but I don't know how much those things translate to Smash gaming.

The stages present in the game include Luxeville, where the toilet was stolen from, Diamond City Stadium, the farthest edge of space, Ashley's mansion, the agate forest, Penny's lab, the Diamond City Castle, Diamond City Elementary, Club Joe, and Diamond City Amusement Park.
