Smash Character Review: Mario Party Handhelds

MARIO PARTY HANDHELDS

Not much to say here, really. Tumble reappears but other than that, there's not really many original characters in these. Honestly, as handhelds tend to be, these games tended to just be "Lite" versions of the console games. The roster didn't go too much out from the standard of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Wario, and Waluigi, with Toad, Toadette, and Rosalina showing up intermittently, and Donkey Kong and Bowser playing major supporting roles. Outside of that, Diddy, Boo, and Bowser Jr. all had singular playable appearances.

Much like how the Golf and Tennis games had to include full RPG modes to their handheld games, this series had to cater more toward single-player options, most of the time taking the form of more linear game boards that lead up to boss fights. These boss fights often had a bunch of regulars, like Kamek, King Boo, Petey Piranha, and King Bob-Omb, as well as giant version of regular enemies like Wiggler, Goomba, Blooper, Monty Mole, and Dry Bones. Most of these generally featured the character doing things we normally tend to see them doing, or just generally playing into an aspect of the character already well-documented.

That's pretty much it for now! Tomorrow, we'll start in on the arcade games!
