Bulblin

BULBLIN

You start out in Twilight Princess just hanging out in Ordon Village and interacting with your fellow villagers. The real plot begins when Link, Ilia, and most of the other kids are gathered at a nearby spring when they are suddenly attacked by a band of brutal green creatures.

These creatures are the Bulblins, a race closely related to the Moblins and Bokoblins, but a bit more like roguish bandits and marauding pillagers, who like to ride around on giant boars and set things on fire. They don’t appear very often, but when they do, they generally fill the role of bandits.

As fighters, they will ride around on the boar mounts for most of their game play, granting them speed and power, and their moveset will pull from their clubs and arrows and other items they use to attack while mounted.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Toon Link

TOON LINK

As Nintendo moved into its Game Cube era, so too did The Legend of Zelda. With it came a brand-new game, set on a vast ocean over a long-submerged Hyrule, complete with a distinct cel-shaded cartoon style that wasn’t well received at first but has since gone on to be celebrated by the fanbase.

With it came a cartoonish new take on Link. With big cat eyes, shrimpy little legs and arms, and a hyper-expressive face, this cartoon Link was positively . . . cute. Coming hundreds of years after the Link of Hyrule, this hero of winds takes up his predecessor’s mantle to save Hyrule once again.

As a fighter, Link will be a bit less agile on his stubby legs, but quicker with more cartoonish movements. His moveset will pull from his abilities across Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks, similar to regular Link’s but with a few features unique to him.

Likelihood rating: Already in.

Spirit Train

SPIRIT TRAIN

Spirit Tracks took a bit of a leap forward in the technological aspects of Hyrule, making trains an intrinsic part of it. While seemingly modern technology is no stranger to Zelda games here and there, the trains’ prominence in the game make it stand out and give Spirit Tracks its own unique identity.

Super Smash Bros. basically hit the nail on the head with this one already. I can’t think of any way I’d represent this game outside of what the Spirit Train stage already does. Temple of Spirits? Yeah, it’s cool, but it’s not the trains everyone remembers the game for.

Byrne

BYRNE

Chancellor Cole is assisted in his attack on Princess Zelda and subsequent separation of her body and spirit by a mysterious warrior with a clawed weapon covering his arm.

This is Byrne, Chancellor Cole’s henchman and the former apprentice of Anjean, the protector of the Tower of Spirits. He left Anjean and joined Malladus out of a lust for power, only to be betrayed by the demon upon his resurrection and rejoin the heroes.

As a fighter, Byrne will be quick and powerful, with swift strikes appropriate of a ninja. His moveset will pull from his various battles and other demonstrated abilities.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Toon Zelda

TOON ZELDA

Toon Link finally manages to get through to the throne room, where he is greeted by his friend, the toon version of Zelda and the likely descendant of the old Toon Link and Tetra.

Almost immediately, Chancellor Cole springs his trap on the pair and Zelda’s soul is ripped from her body, with the intent for her to become the new vessel of Malladus. Now a mere spirit, Zelda accompanies Link as his guide to get her body back, frequently taking possession of haunted suits of armor to assist him.

As a fighter, Toon Zelda will spend most of her time in her phantom armor, which will make her heavy and strong, but several moves will incorporate her ability to come out of the armor as a spirit. Her moveset will pull from the armor’s abilities and will be similar to her Hyrule Warriors moveset.

Likelihood rating: Good possibility.

Chancellor Cole & Malladus

CHANCELLOR COLE & MALLADUS

The story begins as our new Link is summoned to an audience at the castle with the new Princess Zelda. As he enters the castle, he runs afoul of the mean-tempered royal chancellor, a short man with a hidden agenda of his own.

This is Chancellor Cole, secretly an impish creature serving an ancient evil called Malladus, who he has been working to resurrect by inserting himself inside the royal family and betraying them from within.

As a fighter, Cole will be the main fighter, light and floaty, with Malladus possessing him and occasionally manifesting through certain moves. Their moveset will pull from their demonstrated abilities in game.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Alfonzo

ALFONZO

Just like Phantom Hourglass, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks continued the story of Wind Waker, this time being set a hundred years later, on the new continent that Toon Link and Tetra discovered and helped settle. The story of the game follows a new Link, a young boy training to become a train engineer.

He is supervised and instructed by a man named Alfonzo, bearing a distinct resemblance to a member of Tetra’s old crew. He is strong and dependable, and puts his own life on the line to protect Link and Zelda. As Link’s instructor, he is thoroughly knowledgeable about how to work the trains in the game.

As a fighter, he will practically be the “train” representative. Most of his moveset will incorporate the trains and their respective abilities, mixed in with some of his own. He will be stronger with good speed owing to his vehicles.

Likelihood rating: Probably not.

Character Sheet: Byrne

BYRNE

Today, we begin a new round of character sheets, all primarily appearing in the 2D titles from Oracles to Tri Force Heroes. We have quite a few, though not as many as the 3D titles. Among them are:

1. Four Links

2. Ravio

3. Princess Hilda

4. Toon Zelda

5. Din

6. Nayru

7. Ezlo

8. Minish/Picori

9. Linebeck

10. Oshus & Ciela

11. Ralph

12. Alfonzo

13. Madame Couture

14. Subrosian

15. Onox

16. Veran

17. Vaati

18. Bellum

19. Chancellor Cole & Malladus

20. Yuga

21. Lady Maud

22. Byrne

And now, we end our run of new characters with Byrne, the enforcer of Chancellor Cole throughout most of Spirit Tracks. He was a Lokomo, a train spirit-thing, who lusted for power and turned against his mentor Anjean, teaming up with Cole to free Malladus. In the end, he is betrayed by his masters and left for dead, siding with Link and Zelda against them and returning to his old master.

Byrne's main weapon is his clawed gauntlet that he can use to slash his foes, extend outward for far-away attacks, and use as a shield. He can also perform a stunning blast with magic, and he can lunge and jump around like a ninja, a major part of his design. It's light, but it's more than enough.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Ninja Slash

He will leap into the air and perform a strong slash forward, leaving behind three claw marks in the air and doing heavy damage.

Side B: Extension Claws

He will extend his claws out across the stage, stabbing his opponents from afar.

Up B: Ninja Leap

He will leap high into the air and then stab back downward.

Down B: Claw Shield

He will shield himself with his clawed gauntlet, acting as a pretty standard shield.

Final Smash: Spirit Lines

He will tap into some of his Lokomo magic and lay spirit tracks all around the stage. Spirit Trains will then speed along those tracks, pulling from all manner of trains seen in the game, including Link's train, enemy trains, and even the Demon Train on occasion.

Entrance: Three claw marks will appear and he will appear with a slash.

Taunts: Up, he will pound his chest in obeisance to Malladus. Side, he will get down into a challenging position as if ready to fight you. Down, he will hold his stomach as if wounded.

Thanks for reading! Now, let's update our character roster!

Character Sheet: Chancellor Cole & Malladus

CHANCELLOR COLE & MALLADUS

Today, we begin a new round of character sheets, all primarily appearing in the 2D titles from Oracles to Tri Force Heroes. We have quite a few, though not as many as the 3D titles. Among them are:

1. Four Links

2. Ravio

3. Princess Hilda

4. Toon Zelda

5. Din

6. Nayru

7. Ezlo

8. Minish/Picori

9. Linebeck

10. Oshus & Ciela

11. Ralph

12. Alfonzo

13. Madame Couture

14. Subrosian

15. Onox

16. Veran

17. Vaati

18. Bellum

19. Chancellor Cole & Malladus

20. Yuga

21. Lady Maud

22. Byrne

So, this one's not Ganon, but it's basically Ganon. An ancient evil pig demon sealed away with a minion trying to resurrect him, except Ganondorf was canonically dead in this timeline (and this was around the time they were getting flack for pushing Ganon into every story), so they made a not-Ganon Ganon. Malladus is said pig demon, and Chancellor Cole is an imp serving Malladus who acts as Zelda's royal advisor while secretly plotting against her. Between the two of them, there's not quite enough for a full moveset, but in the end Malladus is forced to possess Cole's body, so I figure we can have Cole running around as the player with elements of Malladus emerging here and there.

Between the two of them, we see them float in mid-air, possess people's bodies and remove their souls from them, cast dark spells, summon lightning bugs, fire laser beams, throw destruction orbs, and breathe meteor breath. I would say that that's more than enough, so let's do this thing!

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Dark Spell

Cole will cast a spell of dark magic forward as a projectile, mostly based on the move from his and Possessed Zelda's boss fight.

Side B: Meteor Breath

Cole's head will mutate into Malladus's and he will breath the demon's meteor breath in a destructive beam directly in front of him.

Up B: Float

Cole will spin up lightly into the air, floating as he is often wont to do throughout the game.

Down B: Soul Removal

He will hold out his hand with dark magic on his fingers. Anyone caught by it will be trapped there as he pulls their soul from their body. If they can't break free in the first couple seconds, their soul will be torn from their body, leaving the body lying motionless on the ground with their spirit able to move around freely but unable to touch anything. They can return to their body after a short time.

Final Smash: Malladus and the Demon Train

This will be similar to the Beast Ganon final smash Ganondorf currently uses. Cole will transform into Malladus and slam on the ground, but the moment he does so, the Demon Train will barrel through the stage, crashing into anyone in its path.

Entrance: Cole will strut onto the stage, then sweep off his hats and laugh evilly.

Taunts: Up, Cole will flourish his hats off his head and reveal his horns. Side, Cole will strut around like he does when you first meet him. Down, Cole will cast some magic over Zelda's soulless body.

Thanks for reading! Next up, Yuga of A Link Between Worlds fame.

Character Sheet: Alfonzo

ALFONZO

Today, we begin a new round of character sheets, all primarily appearing in the 2D titles from Oracles to Tri Force Heroes. We have quite a few, though not as many as the 3D titles. Among them are:

1. Four Links

2. Ravio

3. Princess Hilda

4. Toon Zelda

5. Din

6. Nayru

7. Ezlo

8. Minish/Picori

9. Linebeck

10. Oshus & Ciela

11. Ralph

12. Alfonzo

13. Madame Couture

14. Subrosian

15. Onox

16. Veran

17. Vaati

18. Bellum

19. Chancellor Cole & Malladus

20. Yuga

21. Lady Maud

22. Byrne

Today, let's cover Alfonzo, Link's train instructor from The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, descendant of Tetra's crewman Gonzo using his exact model. Most would probably know him from the Spirit Train stage currently in Smash, running the train whenever Toon Link is unavailable. I guess, maybe Niko can take over in his absence now.

Being your instructor, Alfonzo stands as the best possible character to represent the trains gimmick of Spirit Tracks. This gives him the train itself and its tracks, the cannon, drill, and net you can attack to it, and the passenger and freight cars. To the man's credit, even without his trains, he still rose to Zelda's defense and took on Chancellor Cole and Byrne with his sword.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Rail Cannon

He will set up the cannons used on the train by Toon Link and fire it. He will be locked into place as he fires around with it, making it like an on-rails shooter. Used in conjunction with his Down B, he will be able to fire while moving around.

Side B: Train Net

He will extend his train's net outward, being able to scoop up and toss opponents from afar. Once again, able to be used in tandem with his Down B.

Up B: Smokestack

His train's smoke stack will pump, blowing smoke up into the air and launching him upward with it. This will break him from his Down B.

Down B: Track

He will lay out track along any long stretch where he is standing. His train will appear at one end, allowing him to hop onto it. The train will then move along the track, allowing him to attack from it with any of his other attacks, while damaging anyone it connects with.

Final Smash: Train Crash

This will be a Captain Falcon-style cutscene attack, in which a full train barrels down the track at his opponent.

Entrance: His train will pull into the station.

Taunts: Up, he will pull the train's whistle. Side, he will whistle "all aboard." Down, he will stop and lean against a coal shovel and wipe sweat from his head.

Character Sheet: Toon Zelda

TOON ZELDA

Today, we begin a new round of character sheets, all primarily appearing in the 2D titles from Oracles to Tri Force Heroes. We have quite a few, though not as many as the 3D titles. Among them are:

1. Four Links

2. Ravio

3. Princess Hilda

4. Toon Zelda

5. Din

6. Nayru

7. Ezlo

8. Minish/Picori

9. Linebeck

10. Oshus & Ciela

11. Ralph

12. Alfonzo

13. Madame Couture

14. Subrosian

15. Onox

16. Veran

17. Vaati

18. Bellum

19. Chancellor Cole & Malladus

20. Yuga

21. Lady Maud

22. Byrne

Before we begin, I should note that this moveset is specifically for the Zelda appearing in Spirit Tracks. While Wind Waker does have its own "Toon Zelda" in the form of Tetra, who briefly takes on the iconic look, this Zelda bears the appearance the entire time and is a constant companion to Link throughout his game, making her one of my top three favorites, after Tetra and alongside the Breath of the Wild version.

Toon Zelda spends most of her time in the game as a spirit, having had her soul removed from her body by Chancellor Cole and Byrne. However, when in the Tower of Spirits, she can possess the body of a Phantom, enchanted suits of armor that patrol the tower. In this form, she carries a sword and a shield, can walk through lava, carry Link on her shoulders, use a torch, warp from location to location, and turn into a wrecking ball to roll around. She can also sing to perform magic and has a spirit flute that can play special songs.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Phantom Slash

She will lunge forward with her sword quickly, basically recreating the attack from Smash that Zelda uses currently.

Side B: Wrecking Ball

She will curl up into a ball and roll around, smashing into her opponents with high damage.

Up B: Spirit Warp

She will warp from place to place the way she often does inside the Tower of Spirits in order to help Link solve puzzles. Also, a Bowser Jr.-esque ejection from her armor might also work, but that's very similar to the Down B.

Down B: Release

She will release her hold on the Phantom, which will collapse into rubble, her intangible spirit form remaining where she stood. A good defense attack, basically making yourself impervious to damage for a moment.

Final Smash: Spirit Train

She will play a note on her Spirit Flute and summon a train to barrel through the stage, just like Toon Link's.

Entrance: The Phantom will be lying on the ground as Zelda's spirit flies into it.

Taunts: Up, she will burst from the Phantom and sit on its shoulder. Side, she will hold up her fists in front of her face and do that cute little dance she does. Down, she will look at her armored hands in confusion.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SPIRIT TRACKS

Today, the Legend of Zelda has trains! But, seriously, today, we'll be covering Spirit Tracks, a game set roughly a hundred years after Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, on a new continent where Toon Link and Tetra's descendants have built a brand new Hyrule, and have apparently gone through enough of an industrial revolution to have constructed trains. The story follows a new Link and his best friend Zelda after her soul is ripped from her body by her advisor, secretly plotting to resurrect a demon named Malladus (Not Ganon, but really might as well be).

Toon Link is our main character, armed with such standard weapons as his sword, his shield, his bow and arrows, his boomerang, and his bombs, as well as a fan that summons whirlwinds, a whip, the sand wand that creates blocks of sand as platforms, and a flute that summons fairies, heals, and reveals hidden items. As a train engineer in training, he also has a train at his disposal, which can come with a cannon and a passenger or freight car, and a drill in the front for certain engines. You can also catch things with a net from the train, so . . . there's that.

This game's version of Zelda acts as Link's constant companion, giving the pair one of the most distinctly close relationships of the series (and making her one of my favorites after Tetra and Wild Zelda). She spends most of the game as a ghost, able to possess the phantom suits of armor seen in the Tower of Spirits. This phantom comes with a sword and shield, can walk through lava, can carry a torch, can warp around, and can become a wrecking ball. She also sings and gives Link the spirit flute.

As for our secondary characters, the most important here is Alfonzo, Link's instructor as an engineer (an obvious contender to take on all the train-related stuff seen above, but he is also shown to use a sword at one point). There is also Anjean, your mentor of sorts at the Tower of Spirits, and Niko, your father figure. A descendant of Linebeck and, I assume Jolene, shows up running a store as Linebeck III, and the Anouki and Gorons pop up here and there.

This game has three core villains. Chancellor Cole is Zelda's advisor secretly working to revive the demon Malladus using Zelda's body, but when Zelda gets her body back, Malladus uses Cole's body instead. Cole on his own can float, cast dark spells, and summon lightning bugs. Malladus can fire laser beams, summon a destruction orb, and fire meteor breath. Honestly, probably going to combine them. Byrne is a warrior acting as Cole's enforcer and the former pupil of Anjean. He has a clawed gauntlet he can slash with, extend out a ways, and shield with, and he can also fire off a stunning blast, lunge, and jump around.

Our bosses include a giant beetle called Stagnox, a being of fire and ice called Fraaz, a large tentacle-y monster called Phytops, a fiery stone statue called Cragma, and a living skeleton-tank thing called Skeldritch. The mini-bosses include a Mothula, a rock Tektite called Rocktite, a Geozard, a big Moblin called Big Blin, a whip-wielding enemy called Snapper, a fire tortoise called Heatoise, and a Dark Link.

Our returning enemies include Chuchus, Crows, Tektites, Armos, Wolfos, Miniblins, Deku Babas, Like Likes, Keese, Stalfos, Bubbles, Bulblins, Wallmasters, Octoroks, Skulltulas, and Gyorgs. Some new enemies include Enemy Trains that try to ram you, spiky Goomba things called Spinuts, enemies that throw projectiles from behind cover called Lobarriers, blobby projectile shooters called Octives, and ghosts called Nocturns.

Much like the game's prequels with boats, you spend a lot of time on your train, traveling from place to place. Naturally the Spirit Train itself then makes for a strong stage, as Smash has already agreed, as well as the Demon Train controlled by Cole and Malladus. The Tower of Spirits plays a similar role to the Temple of the Ocean King as well, except that here Zelda plays an essential role throughout it. Each area is divided into realms, with the Forest Realm housing Hyrule Castle, Link's home of Aboda Village, and the Forest Temple, the Snow Realm housing the Snow Temple, the Ocean Realm housing the Ocean Temple, the Fire Realm housing the Fire Temple, and the Sand Realm housing the Sand Temple. The Dark World is where the final battle takes place.
