Wingo

WINGO

In Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad appeared as a playable character in a special mini-game, wherein he would be traversing a small square level that the player could turn around and manipulate, functioning as a unique sort of puzzle. These levels would prove popular enough that a couple of years later, a full game would be released of them called Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The game would see Captain Toad and Toadette coming upon a giant star, only for it and Toadette to be stolen by a giant bird.

This giant bird is named Wingo, who would go on to act as the main villain to Captain Toad for most of the game. Though his motivations are uncertain, outside of maybe simply being a bird who likes shiny things, he is shown capable of powerful magic and wind control.

As a fighter, Wingo will be both heavy and a strong aerial fighter, maybe something like Charizard. His moveset will pull from his own boss battle, as well as a few other items representative of Treasure Tracker the game itself.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Plucky Pass

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, though technically a spinoff of Super Mario 3D World, took a radically different take on level design than previously seen in other games. It placed Toad in a small, self-contained level that he would have to traverse, throwing switches and moving pieces around in order to get to the goal at the end.

The stage representing the game will be set on one of these self-contained levels, mostly based on the first level of the same name. I’d like it to have the camera-turning mechanic in some way so that the stage had four different sides the characters would have to play on, but I’m not certain it could be made to work. Other than that, it would have many of the standard moving parts seen in the game.

Captain Toad

As Mario journeys through the galaxy, he eventually reunites with his Toad friends, who have built a spaceship to go after Bowser and assembled themselves into a crew called the Toad Brigade. At their head is the red-spotted Toad, now sporting a pith helmet with a flashlight, a heavy backpack, and a cargo vest.

He is now Captain Toad, leader of the Toad Brigade and brave adventurer. This distinct version of Captain Toad would go on to appear in multiple games, often as an easter egg for Mario to find, but eventually getting himself his own spinoff in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

As a playable character, he is much slower and heavier than his normal form, his big backpack weighing him down and severely hampering his aerials. He will make up for it with his strength, which remains high. His moves will almost entirely pull from Treasure Tracker, though will some references from other appearances as well.

Toad

You have successfully overcome Bowser, using the axe behind him to drop him into the lava below. You head on into the next room, expecting to be rewarded by a kiss from the princess. Instead, you are greeted by a small figure with a mushroom for a head, who says “Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle.”

This is Toad, or more accurately, these are the Toads, the faithful servants and subjects of Princess Peach who inhabit the Mushroom Kingdom. There is one main Toad, a red-spotted one wearing a blue vest, but there have been many others throughout the years, including a blue-spotted one named Buckenberry and a yellow-spotted one named Alagold, as well as the green and purple ones that fill out the Toad Brigade. They have played various roles, from NPCs to referees to playable companions of Mario and Luigi.

In game, they will be small and light, but with surprising strength hearkening back to their appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2. They will be heavy power-up users, frequently being the providers of such in their various games and using them just like the Mario brothers in other games. Most likely, they will make good use of common items not used in Mario and Luigi’s movesets, fully covering all the many items through the Super Mario Bros. history.

Character Sheet: Shy Guy (Side Character Spinoffs)

SHY GUY

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Today's pretty simple. Shy Guys appear as an enemy in Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker, acting sorta like Goombas throughout the game, but pretty simple from there. The first Luigi's Mansion game also has ghost versions of them whose masks you have to suck off before you can capture them. (Its probably one of the only times we get a glimpse at their real faces too).

Here is their current moveset:

Standard B: Snifit

Side B: Mace

Up B: Fly Guy OR Pogo Stick

Down B: Spear and Shield

Final Smash: Pirate Ship

Entrance: Drifts to the ground via parasol.

Taunts: A number of their appearances playing around in the background of various games offers up a number of possibilities.

Next up: Let's start in on our newcomers with Luigi in his Luigi's Mansion form!

Character Sheet: Chargin' Chuck (Side Character Spinoffs)

CHARGIN' CHUCK

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

I never realized just how big a thing Chargin' Chuck was before I started doing this. In my mind, he was just those weird football guys who showed up in Super Mario World and pretty much nowhere else. Yet I feel like I've covered them a lot in this series. They still don't do anything outside of the basic charging, unlike their first appearance, but at least I feel a little better about their inclusion and don't see them as one of the out-there inclusions like Tucks and Honeybee anymore.

Here's the moveset:

Standard B: Baseball Pitch

Side B: Charge

Up B: Jump and Clap

Down B: Dig

Final Smash: Team Blitz

Entrance: He will charge through a block

Taunts: You could probably pull a few from actual football and other sports. Like a war dance, or a huddle, or the lineup position, and so on.

Next up: Let's cover Wiggler!

Character Sheet: Blooper (Side Character Spinoffs)

BLOOPER

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Today, let's cover the Blooper, who pretty much just appears in Super Princess Peach and Toad's Treasure Tracker, functioning basically as they always do. Not much to say.

Now, it's at this point, I have to start to wonder to myself, what's even the point anymore of doing all of these revisions when for the most part we've covered most of what there is to cover and most of the characters will simply have tiny little blurbs as seen above. So, here's my thought. The RPGs are next after this, first Legend of Seven Stars and the Paper Mario series, then the Mario & Luigi series. Those I expect are likely the last games to offer up any substantial new changes to the existing roster entries (plus just so many more new characters). After that will be the Mario sports games, and from there we will have the Party games and a bunch of random others. Most of these games will likely include a vast majority of the currently existing roster, but simply as one among the many playable characters in the various sports titles or as background decoration and obstacles, and thus will not yield much personal to themselves. So, here's what I'll do. I'll finish out the RPGs doing the full revision treatment for all appearing characters, and then for everything after, I'll cover only the new cast and simply skim over anything notable for anyone else. Sound good? Good!

Here is the moveset:

Standard B: Ink

Side B: Surf

Up B: Inkjet

Down B: Tentacle Slap

Final Smash: Gooper Blooper

Entrance: Maybe float onto the stage, referencing how they can fly in The Lost Levels.

Taunts: Ink a little the way they do in Mario Kart. Wave a tentacle around. Float upward in the same animation from the original games.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll cover the Lakitu enemy!

Character Sheet: Boo (Side Character Spinoffs)

BOO

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

This one should be a bit meatier than previous entries here. Boo appears in every single entry this time around, as a basic enemy in Super Princess Peach and Toad's Treasure Tracker, acting about as they normally do, but then play a significant role in the Luigi's Mansion series. Not only is King Boo a major player in all three games, acting as the main villain across the board, but the Boos themselves have a unique role where they hide out in levels requiring Luigi to track them down and capture them. There's not much to say from there, with them just hiding out for the most part until they are revealed, sometimes tossing out bombs or balls if you guess wrong. In later games, you could use your vacuum to grab their tongues before releasing them and sending them bouncing around the room to do some damage.

Here is their moveset:

Standard B: Obake Candlestick

Side B: Bomb Boo

Up B: Boo String

Down B: Vanish

Final Smash: Boolossus
For sure, Big Boo is an important character to represent here.

Entrance: Appears out of nowhere

Taunts: Just the basic cover-your-face animation. That screech of theirs needs to be included too. When they flash and show off a blue coin for sure.

Next up: Let's cover the Bloopers!

Tuesday, June 9, 2020

Character Sheet: Piranha Plant (Side Character Spinoffs)

PIRANHA PLANT

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Today, let's cover Piranha Plant once again. Piranha Plant appears in Super Princess Peach and Toad's Treasure Tracker. His Princess Peach version is more akin to the Yoshi series version of the character, being more of a head on a short stem, constantly chomping and following the players every movement. In Treasure Tracker, it's more of the 3D World types, including the large creeper version blocking your path. Not really much to say here.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Fireball

Side B: Ptooie

Up B: Fly

Down B: Paint

Final Smash: Naval Piranha

Entrance: Pops out of a pipe.

Taunts: Chomping around the way he does. Doing the iconic up and down movement. Maybe the sleep animation.

Next up: Let's cover Boo!

Wednesday, June 3, 2020

Character Sheet: Toadette (Side Character Spinoffs)

TOADETTE

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Toadette's going to be pretty simple here. Toadette appears as a second protagonist with Toad in Treasure Tracker, switching off playable roles with him for several chapters across the game. She can do everything he can do, and so it makes sense for her to remain an echo fighter to him.

Here's her moveset:

Standard B: Flashlight
Pretty much the same. I suppose it might have a more pink light to it or something to differentiate it, but that's really not necessary, so do as you will.

Side B: Pickaxe
Same as Toad's.

Up B: Propeller Hat

Down B: Treasure Chest

Final Smash: Mega Mushroom
Going to keep this here. In the process of writing this, I had a bit of an epiphany for what to do with Peachette, but given we haven't really actually seen her yet, I'm not going to touch it for now.

Entrance: She'd probably arrive aboard the Toad Brigade ship too, or maybe drop from a star carried by Wingo.

Taunts: "Hi!" A cute little wink, so on.

Next up: Let's cover the big baddie himself, Bowser!

Tuesday, June 2, 2020

Character Sheet: Toad (Side Character Spinoffs)

TOAD

Today, we begin our next round of character sheets, with updates for every major character who appeared in the Luigi's Mansion series, Super Princess Peach, or Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Most of these should be fairly simple, with only four newcomers to speak of. They are:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Princess Peach
4. Toad
4e. Toadette
5. Bowser
6. Koopa Troopa
6e. Dry Bones
7. Goomba
8. Piranha Plant
9. Boo
10. Blooper
11. Lakitu
12. Hammer Bro
13. Chargin' Chuck
14. Wiggler
15. Chain Chomp
16. Petey Piranha
17. King Boo
18. Kamek
19. Shy Guy
20. Vacuum Luigi (New)
20e. Professor E. Gadd (New)
21. Perry (New)
22. Ghost (New)

Today, let's cover Toad! Toad appears primarily as a supporting character who doesn't do much across the Luigi's Mansion games and Super Princess Peach, but appeared in an entirely unique starring role in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I went back and forth on this, whether or not Captain Toad would be his own thing, but I decided against it, as much of Treasure Tracker is built more on Toad's inability to do anything, instead relying on clever uses of the level's terrain itself to get around. And those things Toad could do here were already things he could do, what with plucking and throwing vegetables, the double cherry item, and use of a flashlight helmet, with the pickaxe being the only real new thing. Captain Toad is for sure a color swap though.

Here's his moveset:

Standard B: Flashlight
Using the intensity of his flashlight been to stun and damage his opponent the way he does to ghost enemies here. I figure it works better than the whole pick-up-and-throw mechanic, which honestly can function more as a grab.

Side B: Pickaxe
He will pull out his pickaxe and smack rapidly with it, doing a great deal of damage in the process, a unique move to Treasure Tracker.

Up B: Propeller Hat

Down B: Treasure Chest

Final Smash: Mega Mushroom

Entrance: He arrives aboard the Toad Brigade's ship, with the whistle bit.

Taunts: "Thank you, Mario, but our Princess is in another castle." That whistle bit at the beginning of the Toad Brigade's leitmotif. "Alright."

Next up: Let's cover his . . . sister . . . girlfriend . . . partner . . . whatever, Toadette!

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

CAPTAIN TOAD: TREASURE TRACKER

Today, we'll cover Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker, a spinoff puzzle game starring Toad in his Captain persona, after the success of his small test levels in Super Mario 3D World. Typically, each level would be a small self-contained cube or other shape that Toad would have to traverse without jumping, using lifts, touch-screens, and other items.

So, I suppose the real question here is, will Captain Toad gain enough to earn a separate spot from the regular Toad, similar to Vacuum Luigi or F.L.U.D.D. Mario. On the one hand, it is a game unique unto itself with its own special mechanics, but the core premise of it is that Captain Toad himself doesn't do much. Across the game, his moveset consists of pulling up and throwing vegetables (a move he already had) and making use of the pickaxe that acts similar to the hammer from Super Smash Bros. The double cherry item also appears in the game, and he can use his flashlight to kill ghosts but that's about it. Toadette appears as an alternate playable character, doing the exact same things.

Our main villain is a giant bird called Wingo, who steals the star they were after and ends up abducting both at different points in time as well. He can fly obviously, but he can also teleport and whip up strong winds to blow you off the stage. Draggadon is a giant dragon that acts as another boss who rampages around a lava pool and breathes out pink fumes. He can also be ridden by our Toad friends.

Most of our enemies are common Mario enemies, specifically several appearing in Super Mario 3D World. They include Shy Guys, Bullet Bills, Piranha Plants, Cheep Cheeps, Boos, Chargin' Chucks, Goombas, Peepas, Spikes, Fuzzies, Fire Bros and Hammer Bros, Magikoopas, Charvaarghs, Biddybuds, Ant Troopers, Walleyes, and Conkdors. New enemies include Flaptors, birds who try to divebomb you; Stumpers, living stumps of wood; Mud Troopers who march toward you; and Mummy-Mes, who mimic you.

As for stages, well, there's about sixty-three of them, so I'm not even going to try to list them all. Just generally speaking, they are small, self-contained cube-like stages that act as puzzles for you to figure out how to get through, of all manner of biomes common to the Mario series, but more specifically with the general aesthetics of Super Mario 3D World. To be honest, a stage based on any of those from this game would probably be really cool.

As for items, we have mushrooms, turnips, and stars, alongside the Double Cherry and the Pickaxe. In general, I think Captain Toad will not be his own, but his moves will simply be added to the pre-existing Toad character, as many already exist among his moves already.

Now, let's see what we've got:
