HYLIAN SOLDIER
Today, we begin our very first run of Legend of Zelda character sheets, figuring out just what kind of movesets we can pull from all these characters and building a roster. For the moment, we have about fourteen:
1. Link
2. Dark Link
3. Princess Zelda (Currently honorary)
4. Marin
5. Sahasrahla
6. Old Man
7. Hylian Soldier
8. Ganon
9. Agahnim
10. Nightmare
11. Moblin
12. Stalfos
13. Vire/Keese
14. Thunderbird
A surprise to be sure, but . . . I suppose I shouldn't be that surprised. I mean Hyrule Warriors was a thing, right? So I guess it should have been an expected thing. Anyway, Hylian Soldiers first rose to prominence in A Link to the Past, where they took on the role of enemy due to Agahnim's claim that Link captured Zelda. Since then, they have appeared as minor NPCs in most 3D games, and still as enemies in the 2D games (with or without a good reason to be attacking Link).
In this first game, they fight with swords, spears, and bows, throw bombs, and even hide in the grass to ambush Link. One notable version, commonly seen as a boss, swings around a ball and chain. Adding in some of the standards, like their stealth-based role in Ocarina of Time, I think we can piece together more than enough.
Here's the moveset I came up with:
Standard B: Bow and Arrow
Much like Link, their sword will make up a majority of their standard and smash moves, leaving these for their special moves. They will fire an arrow forward, using a standard bow of the Hylian army.
Side B: Spear
They will charge forward with the spear used in basically every game, 2D or not.
Up B: Ball and Chain
Their most notable fighter-type from the 3D games, the soldier will pull out a ball and chain and spin it around over their head, lifting them into the air and dealing a lot of damage.
Down B: Bomb Ambush
First step, they will dig down, a bush covering them. If a character comes within a certain distance of them, they will instantly toss out a bomb at said character.
Final Smash: Caught!
Based more on their iconic role in Ocarina of Time, the soldier will blow a whistle and soldiers will flood the stage before everything goes dark. All opponents will then wake up with significantly higher damage.
Entrance: A whistle will be heard and the soldier will rush onto the stage.
Taunts: Up, they will hold their spear up and stand straight as if guarding the gate. Side, the soldier will march back and forth at attention for a minute. Down, the soldier will pull out the Keaton mask given by Link in Ocarina of Time and admire it.
Thanks for reading! Next up, the big bad pig himself, Ganon!
