Character Sheet: Prince Haru

PRINCE HARU

Today, let us begin a new era of character sheets. Not video game characters this time, but characters appearing in the Super Mario-based movies. We only have a few, but each was distinct enough on their own or from their video game counterparts to warrant a character slot of their own. Let's take a look:

1. Film Mario

2. Film Luigi

3. Film Daisy

4. Prince Haru

5. President Koopa

6. Film Goomba

7. Big Bertha

Today, let's cover Prince Haru, or Kibidango, Princess Peach's fiance turned dog from the anime movie Peach-hime Kyushutsu dai Sakusen! As an original character of the movie, never seen anywhere else, and a major party member throughout the film's runtime, he is perfectly suited to act as a gimmick rep, plus on his own. As he spends most of his time in the movie in his dog form, I'd say he could be in that form by default, but he could also swap between the two as well if needed.

First off, Haru/Kibidango himself is seen lunging and biting at his enemies and stealing objects. He can also transform obviously, and he can play the guitar. His fiancee, the Princess, is also shown using magic to transport herself through a TV, and uses a stick and hammer to fend off enemies and even tricks Bowser into a box at one point. She also has a magical necklace that restores Haru to his true form. Finally, the brothers he acts as companion to throughout the film can climb, grow gigantic, ride a cloud, throw fireballs, throw a super punch, use a shovel and pickaxe, and dance around with a sombrero and guns. I think we have more than enough to go off of.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Bite

For this move, he really lets his canine side show through as he lunges at his opponent and clamps onto them with all of his might, not letting go.

Side B: Super Punch

This is based on the strong punch used by Mario in the film. He'll reel back and sock an opponent very hard, sending them flying.

Up B: Paratroopa Baby

This is based on a section of the film where Mario is kidnapped by a Paratroopa and almost fed to one of her babies. One of the Paratroopa babies, based on their design from the film, will appear and pick up Prince Haru, carrying him into the air.

Down B: Peach's Hammer

This one is based on the hammer Peach uses to fend off Bowser's troops. He will pull it out and slam it down very hard, sending an opponent flying or burying them in the ground, depending on where it hit.

Final Smash: Magical Necklace

Peach's magical necklace will activate and start to glow, sending powerful magic all over the stage and causing various effects. Other possibilities include a television set bursting with all sorts of Bowser's minions flooding the stage, or Kinoko Sennin appearing and casting some magic.

Entrance: He will emerge from a TV.

Taunts: Up, he will hop up and down and bark. Side, he will pull out his guitar and dance around, playing it. Down, he will sniff a mushroom and either laugh, cry, or get mad from it.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we have the big bad President Koopa as played by Dennis Hopper!

Character Sheet: Film Daisy

FILM DAISY

Today, let us begin a new era of character sheets. Not video game characters this time, but characters appearing in the Super Mario-based movies. We only have a few, but each was distinct enough on their own or from their video game counterparts to warrant a character slot of their own. Let's take a look:

1. Film Mario

2. Film Luigi

3. Film Daisy

4. Prince Haru

5. President Koopa

6. Film Goomba

7. Big Bertha

Today, let's cover the movie version of Princess Daisy, as portrayed by Samantha Mathis. Now, much like her costar John, Samantha is still around and still likewise acting, but whether she reprised or not is neither here nor there. Now, within the film, Daisy is held captive most of the time, but she is still active, especially when escaping in the latter end of the movie, when she uses a fire extinguisher to ward off enemy soldiers. There are a couple more things that can also be attached to her, first being her father transfigured into the fungus growing all over the city. Certainly everything he does could be used by her, because he seems like a good dad. Secondly, Yoshi is constantly in her presence during his screen time, and he doesn't do enough to be a separate character. Finally, she has her crystal, which, when pressed into the meteorite it came from, would merge the two worlds within the movie.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Special Gun

This one will be largely based on the weapon she stepped into the Mario brothers' apartment wielding. Now, we never quite get to see what it does, but going on the theory that any kind of story mode for their characters would follow up on the movie's sequel hook, I think it wouldn't be a crime to integrate it into her moves.

Side B: Yoshi

For this move, she'd send out Yoshi, who'd lunge at their opponent and clamp down on them with his powerful jaws.

Up B: Fungus

This one will be based on the bouncy fungus that the Mario brothers use in the movie, working on the theory that her fungified father would be helping her out.

Down B: Fire Extinguisher

For her down special, she'll whip out the fire extinguisher she uses and fire off a blast right in her opponent's face. It won't do much damage, but will disorient them for a second.

Final Smash: Meteorite Crystal

She will pull out her necklace crystal and plunge it into the meteorite which will appear at her feet. Doing so will cause several of the effects that happened to both worlds when she did. It might even insta-kill some characters who get too close, the way it did Lena in the movie.

Entrance: She will emerge from the portal just like in the movie.

Taunts: Up, she'll hold up her gun and cock it. Side, she'll examine some of her archaeology tools. Down, she'll kneel and pet Yoshi for a second.

Character Sheet: Film Luigi

FILM LUIGI

Today, let us begin a new era of character sheets. Not video game characters this time, but characters appearing in the Super Mario-based movies. We only have a few, but each was distinct enough on their own or from their video game counterparts to warrant a character slot of their own. Let's take a look:

1. Film Mario

2. Film Luigi

3. Film Daisy

4. Prince Haru

5. President Koopa

6. Film Goomba

7. Big Bertha

Today, let's cover Mario's brother Luigi, as portrayed in the live action film by John Leguizamo. Now, as of this moment, John is available to reprise the role, but whether he would or not is neither here nor there. And, no, I don't know how Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo could be brothers. Their parents must have waited a looooong time between kids. It could happen, I guess. Either way, there's not particularly enough differentiation between the brothers' abilities, so I feel it's best they be echo fighters of each other.

Either way, here's his moveset:

Standard B: Bullet Bill

Luigi, being younger and sprier could probably be a bit more flashy with the move, somewhat akin to the difference between Fox and Falco.

Side B: Drill

Same, just faster, quicker with it.

Up B: Super Boots

He'd probably jump higher with them, just like his video game counterpart.

Down B: Mushroom Shield

Now, Luigi never uses this one, but it's probably fine. The king helped him as much as Mario.

Final Smash: Bob-Omb

Oh, he's absolutely going to be more cavalier with this one than his brother will.

Entrance: The plumbing truck will break down and he'll step out, probably looking a little embarrassed.

Taunts: Up, he'll jump into the air excitedly. Side, he'll try to pull out his plunger and fumble with it a little. Down, he'll trip and fall down on his butt.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover the film's version of Princess Daisy!

Character Sheet: Film Mario

FILM MARIO

Today, let us begin a new era of character sheets. Not video game characters this time, but characters appearing in the Super Mario-based movies. We only have a few, but each was distinct enough on their own or from their video game counterparts to warrant a character slot of their own. Let's take a look:

1. Film Mario

2. Film Luigi

3. Film Daisy

4. Prince Haru

5. President Koopa

6. Film Goomba

7. Big Bertha

First up, we have the live action film version of Mario, as played by Bob Hoskins. Now, obviously, Bob is no longer available to reprise the role for motion capture or voice work, but that's not what we're here for. This is all hypothetical. And if you've ever seen the movie, you know well enough that Bob's rendition of Mario would play vastly differently from his video game counterpart.

First off, Bob's Mario is an older man who's a bit world weary, and therefore more likely to be slower and not quite as active. He has a much greater emphasis on plumbing than his game version, using a plunger, wrench, and drill at different points in the film, both for its intended purpose and as a weapon. Later in the film, he gains equipment from Big Bertha, including the Super Boots that allow him to leap high into the air and can shoot a Bullet Bill from the toe. He uses a Bob-Omb at one point, and receives support from the Mushroom King, being bounced by some of his fungus and using a mushroom as a shield. Finally, he uses President Koopa's de-evolution gun against him in the final battle.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Bullet Bill

Mario will kick his foot up and fire off a Bullet Bill right in the face of an opponent, which will then explode and do damage.

Side B: Drill

He'll pull his drill from his belt and start it up, doing damage to anyone the bit connects with. His plunger and wrench will be covered in the A button controls.

Up B: Super Boots

Mario's super boots will fire up and he will leap high into the air and away from danger. The jets will do some damage.

Down B: Mushroom Shield

He will pull out a tiny mushroom and hold it up in front of his face. When an attack connects with it, it will expand to block it and ricochet it back at the opponent that fired it.

Final Smash: Bob-Omb

He will pull the fuse on a Bob-Omb and throw it. The Bob-Omb will walk forward for a moment, its fuse running down to the end. Finally, it will stop and explode, blowing up everyone in the vicinity.

Entrance: His plumbing truck will break down and he'll step out.

Taunts: Up, he'll hold up his plunger and shout "Ha-ha!" Side, he'll pull out his wrench and mess with the settings for a second. Down, he'll rub his back and say he's getting too old for this stuff.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let's cover his brother and echo fighter!

Mario Kirby Meisaku Video

MARIO KIRBY MEISAKU VIDEO

Today, we finish off the "movies" with Mario Kirby Meisaku (Masterpiece) Video, a very obscure short video made and distributed to schools to teach kanji to Japanese children. It basically consists of two shorts made entirely of still images, one starring Mario and one starring Kirby, followed by a review of all the kanji learned over the course of the two stories. Mario's video features a story about Wario stealing some comics from a school and Mario having to get them back, and Kirby's video features him helping a lost dog find its mother, discovering that King Dedede has been helping her treat an injury. Really not much here.

Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.

AMADA ANIME SERIES: SUPER MARIO BROS.

Today, let's cover the Amada anime series, a trio of short films starring Mario, basically just casting him in retellings of Momotaro, Issun-boshi (more or less the same basic story as Tom Thumb and Thumbelina), and Snow White. Most of what Mario does are things that his roles in the original fairy tails do, such as being born from a peach and using a gun just like Momotaro, and using a needle as a sword and a bowl as a boat just like Issun-boshi. Likewise other characters play the core roles as seen in the stories. Peach plays an original daughter of the old couple that raise Momotaro, giving him a person to rescue from Bowser playing the Oni, while she also plays the title role of Snow White. Bowser plays the villain in all versions, including the Evil Queen in Snow White. Toads play the dwarves, Hammer Bros play the old couple, and Para-Beetle, Boomerang Bro, and Spike play the roles of Momotaro's dog, monkey, and pheasant companions. All in all, not much I'm willing to really ascribe to any of these characters, as they're not . . . their own moves, but it's all worth making note of.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Film Mario: truck, drill, plunger, wrench, Bob-Omb, super boots, Devo gun, Bullet Bill, mushroom shield

Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu dai Sakusen!

SUPER MARIO BROS.: PEACH-HIME KYUSHUTSU DAI SAKUSEN!

Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu dai Sakusen, or roughly translated to Super Mario Bros.: The Mission to Rescue Princess Peach, is a 1986 anime movie predating the live action film by a full seven years, but is still roughly the same level of pure insanity. The story follows the Mario Bros., working in a grocery store this time, who get wrapped up in a magical adventure when Princess Peach suddenly bursts out of Mario's video game while trying to escape Bowser and his minions.

Mario and Luigi are our protagonists, of course, and over they course of the game, we see Mario climb, grow into a giant, ride a cloud, throw fireballs, throw a super punch, grab Bowser's tail and throw him, dance, and . . . wear a sombrero and use guns. Huh. Luigi is portrayed as much more of a greedy coward in this movie, fleeing from the action rather than fighting, but using a shovel and pickaxe when he thinks there might be a reward of treasure.

For most of the movie, the brothers are joined by an original sidekick, a magical dog named Kibidango who turns out to be Princess Peach's fiance Prince Haru under a magical curse. Over the course of the film, he aids the Mario brothers at every turn, biting, lunging, stealing things, backing up Mario's dancing on a guitar, and transforming (obviously). Princess Peach (whose name as Peach goes back much further than Super Mario 64, as I have come to discover) also appears, coming out of Mario's TV, using a stick and hammer to fend off her attackers, and using a magical necklace. Toads also appear, but mostly as extras.

King Koopa appears as the main villain, coming out of Mario's TV just like Peach, slashing with his claws, grabbing, shapeshifting, and breathing fire. Goombas, Koopas, Paratroopas, Buzzy Beetles, Lakitus, Spinies, Bloopers, Cheep Cheeps, Piranha Plants, Hammer Bros, and Bullet Bills all appear as his minions. So, basically, his Super Mario Bros. (NES) army, at that point just about the only game to come out besides the early arcade games.

As for stages, we have Mario's house and the grocery store they work at, which apparently borders on a massive desert. After going through a pipe in said desert, the brothers find their way to Peach's world, and traverse through a desert full of mushrooms, a field full of flowers, a cave, and an underwater section before raising a sunken pirate ship and causing it to fly, carrying them the rest of the way to Bowser's Castle.

Last but not least, we have the items. On top of the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, the standard items of Super Mario Bros. for the NES, we also have special emotion mushrooms that cause our heroes to be happy, sad, or angry.

And that's it for today! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Film Mario: truck, drill, plunger, wrench, Bob-Omb, super boots, Devo gun, Bullet Bill, mushroom shield
