Red-Brief J

RED-BRIEF J

Determined to get his castle and treasure back, Wario sets out on a quest to regain his treasure and challenge the Jewel. At the end of the third world he was to fight through, he finds himself facing off against a musclebound pig who really likes to flex and pose in the middle of a lake of lava.

This is Red-Brief J, easily the most memorable boss of the entire game. He struts and preens around the stage, attacking Wario with big bombastic moves that show off his awesome physique.

As a fighter, J will be big and strong, similar in style to characters like Captain Falcon, with a lot of speed to back him up too. J's moveset will pull largely from his moves shown in his boss battle itself.

Likelihood rating: Never gonna happen.

The Black Jewel

THE BLACK JEWEL

While the Wario Ware series saw strong success, Wario Land made its first (and only) real foray into the 3D gaming world with Wario World for the Game Cube. The game saw Wario, living a life of luxury in his castle full of stolen treasure, only for a cursed jewel in the middle of his horde to come to life, destroying the castle, forcibly ejecting Wario from it, and taking all the treasure for itself.

This is the Black Jewel, the main villain of Wario World, and the next in a long line of revolving door Wario baddies. The Black Jewel was an evil entity sealed away centuries before by a race called the Spritelings, until Wario's theft of it awakened it once again.

As a fighter, the Jewel will be light and floaty, but also tough and heavy in its attacks. Its moveset will pull from its own boss battle, as well as the distinct gimmicks of Wario World itself.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

Second Chance: The Black Jewel

THE BLACK JEWEL

Welcome to the character that started it all, the character that made me decide to do a second-chance run in the first place. Basically, I had nearly finished up all the character cards and rosters and uploaded them all, when I got a comment mentioning the character and making a case for them. I considered the case and sad, ". . . f*ck." Since that day, I had been slowly churning various characters around in my mind, wondering if I'd made a bad call with them too, so here we are.

Today, we cover the Black Jewel, the main villain of Wario World. For the most part, its final battle was pretty basic, with it shooting its eye laser and pounding on the ground to create a shockwave. I had figured that wasn't enough until it was pointed out that it was the best candidate for a gimmick rep. Which, yes, it is. It can fly, but I'd also like to factor in at least the gem turrets appearing throughout the game, which trap Wario in a sealed area and shoot him with lasers. That alone fills the space I need if nothing else.

I also cheated a little today. As I was watching his boss battle, I also shifted sideways and gave the boss Red-Brief J's boss battle a relook too, seeing as he's a bit of a fan favorite and ultimate memelord. And, yeah, he's got quite a bit too. He stomps with a fiery blast, he charges forward really fast, he shoots fire from his hooves, he leaps high into the air while spinning, and he spins really fast. So . . .

My answer on both is . . .

YES

Here's the movesets I came up with:

Standard B: Eye Laser/Hoof Flame

The Black Jewel will fire its laser, creating a line of flames along the ground. J will charge up his hoof and toss a ball of fire forward.

Side B: Barrier/Charge

The Black Jewel will toss out crystals that will trap players in place if two land around them. J will charge up and dash forward, barreling through players with his elbow.

Up B: Flight/Super Jump

The Jewel is capable of flight so this one is easy. J will crouch down, charge up, and then send himself spinning high into the air.

Down B: Shockwave/J Spin

The Jewel will pound down on the ground, sending stunning shockwaves out from it. J will charge up and then start spinning really fast like a top.

Final Smash: Black Jewel Rising/Lava Slam

The opening cutscene will basically be recreated, with an opponent being forcibly ejected from the stage as Wario's castle crashes down. J will leap high into the air, come back down hard, and cause a wave of lava to plume up onto the stage.

Entrance: The Jewel will emerge from its treasure chest. J will appear offscreen before leaping onto the stage and posing.

Taunts: Up, the Jewel will swirl up into the air, while J does a tree pose. Side, the Jewel will raise a couple of crystals containing Spritelings, while J will do his Gaston walk. Down, the Jewel will rest inside a treasure chest, while J will almost fall over, swinging his arms.

Kirby Hats: His body will be made of the jewel. J's helmet.

Kart: Based on a treasure chest. Based on J's own face.

Special Move: The Jewel will fire a laser that will create a line of fire on the track. J will be able to spin himself and his kart forward for a short time.

Spirit Battle: Giant battle on Treasure Square. Giant battle on Grumble Volcano.

Victory Screen: The jewel will be surrounded by treasure. J will pose several times.

Losing Screen: The jewel will explode as it does. J will fall into lava.

Color Swaps: Normal color, ruby, emerald, sapphire, topaz, amethyst, peridot, diamond. Based on the colors of the other Wario World bosses.

Thanks for reading! Next up, one who got skipped because I was . . . a little petty.

Treasure Square

Wario World was the Wario Land series’ attempt at creating a 3D Wario game. The game sees Wario, sitting in his vault full of treasure and enjoying himself, when a jewel he had just recently collected comes to life and casts him out, taking over the castle for itself.

This stage will be set in the main hub world just outside the castle, up in the sky and covered in twisting beanstalk vines. Throughout the fighting, the Black Jewel that acts as the main villain will fly out in the background, firing lasers at the combatants on the stage.

Wario

Rather than bringing back Tatanga as the main villain from the original Super Mario Land, the game’s handheld sequel instead introduced a new rival for Mario, a fat, greedy doppelganger of the plumber who moved in and took over Mario’s castle while he was away in Sarasa-Land.

This doppelganger was Wario, his name literally meaning “Bad Mario.” Much like Yoshi before him, Wario would see a rampant spike in popularity following his introduction, becoming the star of the next handheld sequel and going on to have two spinoff series and playable roles in every sports and party game.

As a fighter, Wario will be large and heavy, with a lot of power, but more erratic and chaotic moves meant to confuse opponents. This version of the character’s moves will pull primarily from the Wario Land series and his appearance in the Mario series.

Likelihood rating: Already in

Character Sheet: Wario (Wario Miscellaneous)

WARIO

It's time to cover the Wario characters. We will be making a new roster for Wario, although it will not be populated by the most iconic of Wario characters quite yet. We may also get some new additions to the Mario rosters. Here's who were working with this time around:

1. Mario (Revision)
2. Luigi (Revision)
3. Princess Peach (Revision)
4. Toad (Revision)
5. Wario (Revision)
6. Captain Syrup (Revision)
7. Birdo (Revision)
8. Yoshi (Revision)
9. Wanda
10. Count Cannoli
11. Carpaccio
12. Terrormisu
13. The Shake King

The Wario series has kinda struggled over the years to really find its niche in the gaming world, and it really shows in this run of games. Each one has its own general moveset unique from most of the others (though there are some recurring themes). While several games are unique enough that they can rely on gimmick reps to cover them, like Count Cannoli for Master of Disguise and Shake King for Shake It!, I can't quite rely on that for all of them. So let's see what we've got.

Across these games, Wario is seen flying in his plane, dropping buckets and other items onto peoples heads, inflate himself, a bunch of bomberman-related moves that I won't touch on too much, charge forward with his shoulder, breathe dragon fire, jet forward with a helmet, drop a butt bash, punch enemies, pick up enemies and throw them, grab and spin enemies around, roll, suck enemies in, all of the Master of Disguise stuff that I won't touch too much here, shake stuff out of bags and enemies as well as a few other Shake It moves I'll save for possibly the Shake King, light on fire, roll into a snowball, and shrink.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Dragon Helmet
For this move, I actually decided I'd whip back out the Dragon Helmet from the original Wario Land since we've seen it a few times since. Basically, Wario's helmet will appear on his head and spew flames.

Side B: Shoulder Rush
Its still his most iconic move that he uses in almost every single game we've seen so far, so I think I'm going to stick with it.

Up B: Jet Helmet
Wario will whip out his jet helmet from the original Wario Land and use it to jet across the stage in a straight line. Better for getting back to the stage from above it rather than below it.

Down B: Enemy Effect
This one is based more on his movesets from the later games where he gains status boosts from various enemies. When you press the move, he has the possibility of lighting on fire, rolling into a snowball, getting fat, or becoming a zombie.

Final Smash: Wario's Plane
As much as I liked the boss rush from before, it doesn't really fit his whole character anymore. Instead, I'll take after several games in which he terrorizes enemies from his plane, by flying back and forth over them (sorta like Super Sonic), dropping missiles and the occasional bucket, and finally crash landing on the stage.

Entrance: crashing in his jetplane.

Taunts: I still like him throwing his shoe. Maybe the way he wiggles his butt in Shake It. His bashful expression with his index finger on his lower lip.

Thanks for reading! Next time, let's check out his nemesis, Captain Syrup!

Wario World

WARIO WORLD

Wario World was the Wario series's attempt at making the jump to 3D that would sadly be largely forgotten in the wake of its more successful Wario Ware series. The game debuted on the Game Cube and featured Wario trying to get his treasure back after a cursed jewel comes to life and kicks him out of his castle.

Wario is your main playable character in this game, his moveset being able to run, jump, climb poles, butt bash, deliver a forward punch, pick up and throw enemies, spin enemies around really fast, roll like a ball, and suck objects in. The only real supporting characters are little creatures called spritelings that you have to rescue, but they don't do much from there.

The Black Jewel is the main villain of the game, but sadly, its final boss battle is severely lacking in variety enough to build something off of. Basically it just hovers in midair and fires lasers at you, occasionally making shockwaves. Good for a boss battle or assist trophy I suppose, but that's about it.

The game is divided into four worlds with two worlds inside them. Each small world ends in a boss fight, and then the larger world ends in a third boss fight. These include: Greenfist, a hulking muscleman who charges and punches at you; Sandworm, a giant sandworm who swims around in the sand and spits spikeballs; and Dino Mighty, a dinosaur that will jump, slam, and sweep its tail; followed by Brawl Doll, a weird angel baby who slaps you and spits stars at you; Clown-a-Round, a clown that rides on a ball and can throw fists and his ball at you; and Dual Dragon, a pair of dragons that double team you with one breathing fire and the other spitting balls at you. Next up is Winter Windster, a giant head thing that has freezing breath and can drop rocks on you; Spideraticus, a giant spider that can shoot lasers and balls of web; and my personal favorite boss (who I don't understand how he isn't a meme yet) Red Brief J, a tall, musclebound pig dude in a speedo who struts around the stage like he's hot stuff, throwing giant punches, shooting fire, slamming down, and spinning really fast. He's great. I love it. Lastly we have the Mean Emcee, who spins really fast, charges at you, and hides in cups; Ironsider, who jumps around and sends fists after you; and Captain Skull, a pirate who shoots cannonballs and hookshots at you.

As for enemies, the game has this weird thing where each world has the exact same set of four enemy types, but they look completely different from each other in every world, and you'd never suspect they were the same thing. These are Magons, basic mook enemies; Cractyls, basic flying enemies; Triceratopses, big enemies with clubs they swing at you; and Ankirons, tank enemies with big gun turrets. They keep their names from the first world, which has a dinosaur theme. From there, we also have Bone Fists, disembodied skeleton arms that shoot finger guns; Sword Fish who swim; Elephants who charge; Caged Beasts who swipe at you; Cobras that bite; Angler Manglers, giant walls full of teeth; Icicle Mites who walk around; Land Manta Rays who swim; Monstrous Magnets that fly around and stick to walls and can also fire off electric blasts; Wind Winder, wind spirits that blow air; Rams who charge; Ninja Crows who hop around; Wheel Mice, who run in spinning wheels; Terrible Portraits that throw lightning and rocks; chained-up Vampires that wobble around and spin fast; Witches who appear in mirrors; Big Scorpers who bite; Flying Shovels that work like the magnets; and Laser Jigglefish that shoot lasers. There are also a couple of recurring "mini-bosses," one being the Stone-cold Statue that spins around, shoots lasers, and breathes fire, and the other is the Gem-bodied Creatures that can spawn smaller gems and shoot lasers.

As mentioned before, there are four worlds in this game, each with two smaller worlds within. The first world is Excitement Central, featuring Greenhorn Forest and Greenhorn Ruins, both forest/jungle levels with dinosaur elements. The next is Spooktastic World, with Horror Manor, a haunted house, and Wonky Circus, a carnival level. The third is Thrillsville, with Shivering Mountains, an ice level, and Beanstalk Way, a sky level. The last is Sparkle Land, with Mirror Mansion, a funhouse level, and Pecan Sands, a desert level. And of course, we also have Wario's Castle and Treasure Horde, and a small hubworld outside of it that connects to all the others.

All kinds of treasure is available as items, as well as bombs, springs, and garlic as a healing item.

Here's what we've got so far:
