Rudy the Clown

The action of Wario Land 3 took place entirely within a tiny music box enchanted by an evil clown. Outside of the unique setup, most of the levels were pretty standard Wario levels, with one distinct iconic setting coming in the form of Wario’s final battle against the clown in question.

Confusing as it might be to have the same character appear both playable and as a stage, the playable version will have the general size and dimensions of his Dr. Mario appearance and will probably have an HD design. The Rudy of the stage will be a recreation of the game scene, gigantic and filling the stage, with the graphics of the original game. The stage will take place on the floor of the original boss battle, with Rudy’s giant hands moving up and down as platforms.

Rudy the Clown

After Wario Land II, rather than sticking with Captain Syrup and building a rivalry like Mario with Bowser, the third game saw Wario come across a magical music box in the middle of a forest, getting sucked into it and coming face to face with a powerful demonic clown.

This is Rudy the Clown, the creator of the music box who manipulates Wario into nearly freeing him. He would appear once more as the villain of Dr. Mario 64, which Wario would guest star in. Other than that, this would be his only appearance.

As a fighter, Rudy will be big and powerful, with powerful magical and physical attacks. His moveset will pull primarily from Wario Land 3, as well as his appearance in Dr. Mario 64.

Likelihood rating: Probably not

Character Sheet: Rudy the Clown

RUDY THE CLOWN

Today, we include the new characters brought in by the Dr. Mario series. Two of these are original character variants from the Dr. Mario series itself. The other two are more characters that the series gave me pause to stop, look back at and reconsider my stance on them. They are:

1. Dr. Mario

2. Dr. Luigi

3. Rudy the Clown

4. Princess Shokora

This one's a bit of a surprise. Rudy the Clown was the main villain of Wario Land 3 and made a surprise reappearance in Dr. Mario 64 as a villain, with his minion Mad Scienstein stealing Dr. Mario's megavitamins to cure his boss of a cold. This got me looking back at the original game and wondering to myself "Why didn't I make him a gimmick rep at the time?" I guess gimmick reps have become more prominent since, but, like, FLUDD Mario, Rosalina, and Cappy had already been a thing. And then that got me thinking about Wario Land 4 as well, and . . . well here we are.

Here's what I came up with:

Standard B: Mad Scienstein

Based upon the enemies role as his right-hand man in Dr. Mario 64, Rudy will call out the scientist and have him throw out a vial of his shrinking formula at an opponent. If it hits, it will shrink the character for a while.

Side B: Rocket Fist

This one is more or less based on his boss battle in Wario Land 3. Basically, his fist will grow larger, detach from his body and launch straight forward.

Up B: Vampire Form

Since it's his minions that inflict the vampire form on Wario, I don't suppose it would be all that weird for him to take this on himself. He will turn into a swarm of bats and fly upward for a short time.

Down B: Music Box

There's a couple of other possibilities here, including that virus attack Dr. Mario and Dr. Luigi had, but I like the idea of him throwing out his music box from Wario Land 3, which will then create a vortex and suck the nearest character into it, trapping them for a short time.

Final Smash: Boss Battle

This will be based on Rudy's final boss battle in Wario Land 3. He will grow to gigantic proportions and start smacking and smashing the characters with his giant hands.

Entrance: He will emerge from his music box.

Taunts: Up, he will throw his head back in a belly laugh. Side, he will detach his hands and clap them together before them. Down, he will disappear for a second, his eyes and mouth appearing and laughing.

Thanks for reading! Next up, we'll give Princess Shokora another chance too.

Character Sheet: Wario (Original Handhelds)

WARIO

Now, let's quickly go over the few new characters and those who need revision. It's probably no surprise that there are only a few of both in total:

1. Mario (Revision)
8. Koopa Troopa (Revision)
10. Goomba (Revision)
11. Piranha Plant (Revision)
12. Boo (Revision)
35. Princess Daisy
36. Wario
37. Tatanga
38. Captain Syrup

Hoo boy, we have some stuff to get through, and I can't even rely on the currently existing moveset to help sort it out, considering I'm pretty sure not a darn thing in Wario's moves was lifted from these games. So, I guess I'm pretty much out on my own with this one. Wario appears in Super Mario Land 2 as the villain, before completely hijacking the series and turning it into four total subsequent games entirely starring him. In Land 2, his boss battle consisted of him mimicking Mario's moves from the game, while the first Wario Land gave him a seemingly beefed up version of Mario's moveset with roided-up versions of the previous power-ups before Wario Land 2 and beyond gave him a new game concept of transformations occurring as a result of certain enemies' actions upon him.

In general, Wario is heavier and stronger than Mario. Rather than using skill and acrobatics, Wario often relies on brute strength to get the job done, including an elbow rush seen in all four Wario Land games, as well as the ability to ground pound and cause an earthquake. He is also incredible durable, and tends to use the effects of other's attacks and turn them to his own gain. This can make him quite the versatile foe. I think, as he originated as a dark mirror to Mario, I might be able to use Mario's current moveset to sort out everything Wario brings to the table.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Shoulder Rush
Wario suddenly charges forward with his elbow, knocking everyone and everything out of his way. This is based on his most common offensive moves in the game.

Side B: Enemy Effect
This move mirrors Mario's current Side B, which allows him to access a number of power-ups that cause different effects on him. These can include Fiery (which lights Wario on fire for a time), Fat (which makes him heavier and more powerful), Drunk (which surrounds him in a cloud of noxious gas), Vampire (which lets him flutter around the stage as a bat), and Zombie (which makes him impervious to harm). An enemy known for inflicting these states will appear briefly to cause it.

Up B: Spring
Wario will gain the bouncy state that he often receives after being smacked with a hammer and bounce high into the air. (This is probably the closest to anything in his current moveset, so it works).

Down B: Earthquake
Wario will do a heavy butt bash, shaking the stage and burying anyone in the immediate vicinty.

Final Smash: Boss Rush
Big Bird, Sewer Rat, the Witch, and the Octopus from Super Mario Land 2 will appear on screen, Sewer Rat, speeding back and forth across the stage, Big Bird swooping from above, the Witch casting fire on the stage, and the Octopus spawning smaller octopi to attack, all together creating massive havoc for the players. Yeah, that sounds fun.

Entrance: crashing in his jetplane from Wario Land 3?

Taunts: maybe I should have saved the drunk stage for this. Also, his seemingly bashful expression when Mario approaches him in Land 2. And maybe when he throws a shoe at the end of the battle.

Thanks for reading! Next time, let's check out the long forgotten villain of Super Mario Land: Tatanga!

Wario Land 3

WARIO LAND 3

Today, let's take a nice long look at Wario Land 3, the third in the Wario Land series and fifth in the Mario Land handheld series. The game features Wario finding himself sucked into a magical music box controlled by an evil clown named Rudy and has to collect treasures in order to escape. Of course, our main characters are Wario and Rudy, with no Captain Syrup returning, sadly. Let's go over it all and see what we've got.

Wario still functions in much the same way, jumping, elbowing things out of his way, butt bashing to shake the ground, picking up and throwing enemies, and rolling around in a ball. He also brings back his abilities to gain powerups based on the effects enemies have on him. His ball, bouncy, drunk, flat, fiery, frozen, inflated head, and zombie forms all return, though some with different enemies that can inflict the conditions. He can also get wrapped up in string or covered in snow, both of which allow him to roll as a ball. He can be electrified and stunned, turned invisible, or turned into a vampire so that he can fly as a bat. He is also seen flying a plane in the beginning of the game, so there's that.

Another detail to note is that throughout the game, he collects treasures and items that he can use to cause changed in various levels so that he can progress, most of them implying that Wario himself is using the items, so I should consider them as well. This then adds to his repertoir: five music boxes, gloves, boots, overalls and other items that boost Wario's abilites, a lantern that reveals a hidden castle, a burning torch, two cogs to run an elevator, a warp-creating compact, a jar that summons rainstorms, a spellbook and wand to freeze things, a spellbook and wand to summon lightning, an axe to cut trees out of the way, a pair of rings to access a tower, two slates to open a gate, a fan to blow away mist, two papers showing how to calm winds, three conch shells that make a volcano erupt, two chemicals to move heavy blocks, an air pump to raise an ice block, and many many more. It's not certain how many of these should be seriously considered for Wario's moveset or not, but I feel they're at least worth noting.

Rudy the Clown replaces Captain Syrup as Wario's nemesis in this game. The struggle with this character is that he's mostly giant and immobile, functioning more like a general boss than an active player the way Bowser, Captain Syrup, or Tatanga were. Size doesn't matter too much to me (not simply because I have every intention of including Godzilla if the day ever comes that I work my way around to that franchise), but his mobility is a problem. Things we know he can do is suck people into a music box and transform people into monsters, as well as punch downward, slam with his fist, and clap his hands together during the actual boss fight. In my personal opinion, unless any future games give him more, I think he works best as a boss fight, and, well, honestly if this game were to have only one representative stage, a recreation of his boss fight would be the best choice to go with, with his hands acting as platforms. But that's just me.

As far as other bosses go, we have Doll Boy, a matryoshka looking doll sitting on top of barrels and throwing hammers; Wormwould, a giant worm that spits rocks; Wolfenboss, a floating wolf (ahem, fox) spirit throwing out spirit balls and spike balls with little not-Goombas inside; Shoot, a soccer-playing bunny (why these games like sports-playing bunnies, I'll never know); Muddee, a giant salamander crawling around on a wall; Scowler, a giant squid; Helio, a balloon with spear arms that spits out a pump to inflate him; Jamano, a ghost that chased you until you take out his four ghost friends; Pesce, a fish that swims around and eats fruit; and Anonster, a spider that swings around and spits webs.

We don't really seem to have many returning enemies, though many are very similar to previous enemies. We have: Spearheads, totally not Pirate Gooms; Para-Gooms, who have spiky umbrellas as weapons; Prince Froggy, Red Froggy, and Futamogu, frogs really good at being in your way; Webbers, projectile-shooting spiders; Birds and Zombies, probably the only truly returning enemies; Silkies, string-spitting larva; Fire Robota, Beam Robota, Spear-bots, and Hammer-bots, little lego-looking dudes with various weapons in their chests; Teruteru, who latch onto Wario's head and blind him; Mad Scienstein, a scientist throwing invisibility potions; Doughnuteers and Applebies, who throw food to Wario; Omodons, big Thwompy things lifted up by robotic Omodonmekas; a fat, earthquake-making guy apparently named Count Richtertoffen?; Pneumos, flying jellyfish with stingers; Brrr Bears, throwing freezing ice; Hebarii, little pink blobs clinging to the ceiling; Tadpoles, Haridama, and Octohon who swim around; Mr. Moon and the Sun who follow Wario around and attack with electricity and fire respectively; Kushimushi, who are basically Hoopsters; Water and Sand Hands that reach out and grab you; a robotic mouse obsessed with throwing you out of its room; Kobatto, a swarm of bats circling an area; Togeba, a spiky thing that Wario can flip up as a platform; Nobiiru, spiky things that hide in the wall, and giant snakes that breath fire. Again, still not much to work with.

Now, let's come to the stages. This game has a bit of a different mechanic to it, in that it plays out much more like a Metroidvania-style game, with a number of levels for you to work through, each level giving you a new ability or a treasure that alters something about a different course or opens up a new area, resulting in a lot of backtracking to different levels, each little bit unlocking something new. As it is, this means we have several singular levels with varying themes to them, so I'm going to try to list them all here:
