Full Mario Roster

And there it is, folks. The full roster of all Mario series characters with potential to be fighters in a Smash game, at least based on actual evidence in-game. If a character related to the series does not appear here, they likely appear in one of the five separate rosters, links to which will appear at the end of the roster on the theoretical character select screen. All characters are listed in exact order of appearance. That made things much more simple than trying to use any kind of logic to sort them.

Roster made using https://ersatzsquare.github.io/rosterMaker/

My question to those reading: if this roster were a real thing, and part of an actual game, who ya mainin'?

Rosalina & Luma

After the Game Cube, Nintendo’s next big system was the Nintendo Wii, which made heavy use of the new motion control technology with its new remote and nunchuck controller design. No game made better use of the technology than the next major mainline Mario game, Super Mario Galaxy. The game saw Bowser once again kidnapping Princess Peach, but this time taking off with her into space. Mario tries to follow but fails, until he encounters a mysterious space princess, traveling the stars on a comet spacecraft and accompanied by a race of friendly star creatures.

This is Rosalina, and the stars that accompany her are the Lumas. Rosalina first encountered the Lumas as a child, running away from home to go on an adventure with them, only to find herself unable to return to those she left behind ever again. The Lumas took her in, and she became their mama, loving and caring for them as they grew to become planets and stars and other celestial bodies. Her role in the Galaxy games would propel her to instant stardom, becoming a permanent fixture in most sports and party games and even cropping up in other adventure games here and there.

As a playable fighter, Rosalina works in tandem with the Lumas, able to send them out and fight their battles on two fronts. She will be on the heavier side but still quite floaty given her unearthly nature. Her moves pull almost exclusively from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, almost acting as a representative for both games.

Mario Party Superstars

MARIO PARTY SUPERSTARS

For as big a deal as this game was and as hype as it is, this blog is actually going to be really easy. Literally everything in it comes from something that we covered before. Our playable characters include Mario and Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina, Yoshi and Birdo, Wario and Waluigi, and Donkey Kong. We have only five game boards pulling from the first three Mario Party games, specifically Peach's Birthday Cake and Yoshi's Tropical Island from 1, Space Land and Horror Land from 2, and Woody Woods from 3. Then we have a bunch of minigames brought back from every game in the series. Toad returns as the host, Boo returns in his old mechanic, Bowser plays the boss and Bowser Jr. fills the Koopa Kid role, Koopa acts as your tutorial, and Toadette holds the stars. That's pretty much it.

Here's what we've got so far:

Mario Golf: Super Rush

MARIO GOLF: SUPER RUSH

You just couldn't do, could you, Nintendo? You just couldn't let me go without throwing me one last left-field curve ball? No, you just had to give your brand new golf game a story mode with basically a giant Mr. Blizzard as the final boss. Do you think this is funny, Nintendo? (Insert Nintendo saying "Yes" here).

Either way, Mario Golf: Super Rush is a brand new game in the Mario Golf series after seven years since World Tour. The game features a number of ease-of-life changes to the game, like lines showing you where the ball ended up, and other changes that make it a bit more exciting. For instance, speed golf has been added, a mode that lets you run to your ball, racing against your opponents, rather than just taking you directly to the ball. We also have battle golf, taking place in a big arena and everyone playing a big free-for-all.

At the moment, our roster includes Mario and Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and Pauline, Wario and Waluigi, Yoshi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Bowser and Bowser Jr., Boo, King Bob-Omb, and Chargin' Chuck in his playable debut (just want to take the meaningless brownie points of saying "I did it first, na na na na na na!"). Each have special shots and special dashes to help them in speed golf. Mario mostly uses his super star, Luigi uses the ice flower, Peach a gymnastics ribbon and Daisy a twirling baton, Wario uses lightning mostly, Waluigi is flamboyant as usual, Yoshi uses eggs, Toad uses the giant mushroom, Donkey Kong uses punches and rolls, Rosalina mostly uses her Lumas, Pauline sings "Jump Up, Superstar!", Bowser mostly uses fire, Junior uses his Klown Kar and Bullet Bills, Boo mostly uses strings of other Boos, King Bob-Omb uses a cannon and other Bob-Ombs, and Chargin' Chuck just straight up yeets the golf ball like a football (I think he's a little confused).

We also have Miis, who star in the story mode taking after the old RPG story modes where you are a young rookie golfer working their way up through the ranks. About halfway through though, the plot veers off into a story about an evil Snow King taking over Bowser's kingdom and freezing the entire area, and your character being guided to defeat him by a disembodied voice, who grants the character fire and lightning powers (which I think can be used to garnish Plum and Kid's movesets, so there's that). Across the game, you fight three bosses, an Electric Statue that fights you with lightning attacks, the Sacred Flamebeast that fights you with fireballs, and the Snow King, who, while being guarded by Mr. Blizzards all over his course, also throws giant versions of their snowballs at you, uses Freezies, freezes whole areas, and sends off shockwaves. That, along with Mr. Blizzard's own moves like throwing snowballs, bouncing around, whipping up small flurries sometimes, and even Dr. Freezegoods skiing in the Yoshi games . . . yeah, the moveset's there. Nintendo just had to do it. I . . . I . . . I think I'm a little broken right now. I'm going to need a minute.

Anyhoo, as for our stages, we have a Rookie Course to learn the ropes; Bonny Greens, a standard grassland stage; Balmy Dunes, a desert level; Wildweather Woods, a forested area with lots of weather effects; Ridgerock Lake, a rough rocky area with some tornadoes; Bowser Highlands, a combo snow-and-lava world; and the Super Golf Stadium for the battle golf. Apparently a New Donk City-based stage will appear in later DLC.

And that's it for the currently existing games! Only took two years. Here's what we've got so far:

Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge

MINI MARIO & FRIENDS: AMIIBO CHALLENGE

Last one! Hooray! Mini Mario & Friends was sort of a departure from the standard series. All the story elements of Donkey Kong kidnapping Pauline and Mario going after him are gone, as is pretty much everything Pauline entirely. Basically the game works with amiibos, adding in Mini-versions of whichever characters you have and having them go through levels for you. Each comes with their own special move that shakes up the gameplay a little bit.

The character amiibos that work with this include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Rosalina, Bowser, and Bowser Jr., each getting their own mini, alongside a little robot named Mini-Spek, a stand-in for any other amiibo you might have tried to scan in (Say, you tried a Link amiibo, for instance). Mario can wall jump, Luigi can high jump, Peach can float, Toad can crouch and get through small areas, Yoshi can eat enemies, Donkey Kong can climb steep slopes, Diddy Kong can grab ledges, Rosalina can perform super high jumps, Bowser can ground pound, and Bowser Jr. can fly in his Klown Kar over spikes without injury. Mini-Spek has no special moves.

The levels in this game are mostly split up into unique worlds for each amiibo. For instance, Barrel Blast Jungle is Donkey's world and features barrel cannons. Mine Cart Cove is Diddy's and features minecarts. Egg Launch Land is Yoshi's, with eggs the player can ride in. Boost Pad Bonanza is Mario's with lots of boost pads. Balloon Float Castle is Peach's with balloons that can carry you upward. Mushroom Hills is Toad's with lots of bouncy mushrooms. Moonlight Mansion is Luigi's with candles that scare off boos and reveal hidden blocks. Air Tumble Rumble is Bowser Jr.'s with fans that push you across gaps. Fire Ride Fortress is Bowser's with lots of burners everywhere. Gravity Galaxy is Rosalina's with lots of gravity wells changing things up. Finally, we have Star World, the final world after the rest are complete.

That's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Mario: jump, handstand, hammer, climb, swing on bar, pick up and throw, springs

Donkey Kong: bag, rocks, barrels, chains, buttons, giant mech, bananas, vines

Mario Party: The Top 100

MARIO PARTY: THE TOP 100

This one's going to be simple. Do you know why? I've already covered everything. Mario Party: The Top 100 is the third Mario Party game for the 3DS, this time just a big old compilation of the most popular 100 minigames from the entire series. I don't have to cover the minigames, because I already have. There's only a basic set of boards that only exist as a gateway to the games, and the space system is almost directly lifted from Star Rush (probably was since it came out only a year later), so I don't have to cover those much either. That leaves us with our characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Wario, and Waluigi as they playable cast, Toad and Toadette as hosts, and Bowser and Donkey Kong as challengers in various games.

And done! Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Mario: fishing, hammer, running, stopping a bomb

Luigi

Princess Peach

Yoshi: eat

Daisy: mechanical bull

Waluigi: hammers, bombs

Wario: car

Mario Party: Star Rush

MARIO PARTY: STAR RUSH

Mario Party: Star Rush is the second Mario Party game for the 3DS. It doesn't really have a story mode, focusing much more heavily on the simple game aspects. The central mode, Toad Scramble, actually casts you as one of four Toads, who then move around the board recruiting new allies from the more regular assortment of characters, including all eight characters from DS, alongside Toadette, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong. Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Boo are also playable, but only in one mode when their amiibo is tapped in.

The boards are much different than normal. Spaces are more like squares on the floor and movement is far more open. Think of it a bit like the board game Clue for reference. These boards will also have features like item boxes, coin balloons, duel balloons, shops, cannons, star balloons, and boss spaces where you can face a boss to earn points. These bosses appear across all boards and include: a Mega Goomba, King Bob-Omb, King Boo, Petey Piranha, a Mega Blooper, a Mega Dry Bones, a Mega Monty Mole, Kamek, Bowser Jr. (with actual punching gloves on his Klown Kar; I was wondering where those came from), and Bowser, mostly all doing their standard thing.

The "boards" are more like worlds, with multiple stages within. World 0 is a standard grassland and tutorial world; World 1 is a tropical island; World 2 is a haunted house with Peepas that like to follow you as false teammates; World 3 is made of cake and candy; and World 4 is a Bowser's Castle stage.

The minigames this time around see our characters: collect acorns, run, decorate a cake, shoot Piranha Plants, eat cookies, jump, bowl for Monty Moles, drive Wigglers, drive boats, stamp, platform, avoid Spikes, sweep up jewels, spin around a pole, avoid Conkdors, break blocks, roll on a ball, drive cars, surf on a leaf, fish, collect coins, scuba dive, and face the bosses as they: try not to wake up Mega Goomba, shine a light on King Boo, smack Mega Monty Mole with a hammer, shoot bombs at King Bob-Omb, throw shells at Petey Piranha, toss a ball to Mega Blooper, avoid Mega Dry Bones' bone, play cards with Kamek, fight Bowser Jr., and avoid Bowser inside of Mechabowser as it shoots missiles and tries to claw you.

Here's what we've got so far:

Characters:

Mario: fishing, hammer, running, stopping a bomb

Luigi

Princess Peach

Yoshi: eat

Daisy: mechanical bull

Waluigi: hammers, bombs

Wario: car

Toad

Super Mario Party

 SUPER MARIO PARTY

Today, let's cover the most recent Mario Party, made for the Nintendo Switch. Once again the plot returns to a basic glorified joystick-measuring contest, with a bunch of character all vying to prove they're the biggest superstar of all. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser all return from Mario Party 10, with Toad and Toadette sadly being demoted back to hosts alongside Kamek once again. Koopa, Boo, Shy Guy, Hammer Bro, and Dry Bones all return from previous games as well, and Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, Goomba, Monty Mole, and Pom Pom are added in as new players.

Blue spaces, red spaces, event spaces, versus spaces, item spaces, lucky spaces, and bad luck spaces all return, the series having gone back to a more standard Mario Party setup, the whole car gimmick thankfully being left out. You also get ally spaces, that call friends to come and help you. Items also return in their purest form, including Mushrooms, Poison Mushrooms, Golden Mushrooms, a Pipe, a Peepa Bell (replacing Boo's role with a Peepa instead), a Warp Box, and a Dueling Glove, alongside a Golden Drink that turns the player into a golden form, a Coinado that steals coins, a phone that calls allies, a ticket to summon a Fly Guy to steal stars, a Hidden Block, and a card that doubles your potential star gains. Also every character comes with a unique dice block with a number assortment suited to the character's characteristics (Mario's is balanced, Wario's is all sixes with a couple drawbacks because he's greedy to the point of stupid, Luigi's and Yoshi's can take you further because they're faster, you get it).

We have only four boards for this game, including: Whomp's Domino Ruins, kinda like those Thwomp Ruins from Mario Kart 8, more or less; King Bob-Omb's Powder Keg Mine, an underground lava stage; Megafruit Paradise, a tropical island level; and Kamek's Tantalizing Tower, a gold-plated level where the costs of stars change around. There are also other game modes, like Challenge Road, a single player level that takes you space by space through a series of minigames.

In the game's 84 minigames, we see the characters: ride tricycles, snap pictures, cook meat, catch food, roll on barrels, fly around on giant magnets, count Toads, climb, take pancakes, water plants, avoid Chargin' Chucks, shake candy, fly planes, swim, run from Broozers, avoid bananas, avoid waking up Wiggler, feed a giant fish, fish, search for buried treasure, platform, avoid lightning, collect coins, throw pies, draw faces, do math, deliver food, catch fruit, pull a rope, avoid a crab's hammers, ride a Chain Chomp, vacuum, steal packages, throw darts, shoot cannons, play tennis with bombs, sort balls, throw boomerangs, skate, play cards, row, drive giant punching gloves, play tug of war, smack with hammers, play soccer, roll around in balls, play hot potato with bombs, jump, pose, play baseball, clean windows, and ride horses.

Mario Party 10

 MARIO PARTY 10

Today, let's cover Mario Party 10, the second-to-last console game in the franchise. The game takes heavily after Mario Party 9, bringing back the car gimmick. Once again, the roster doesn't really build on the previous game. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Toad, and Toadette all return, while Birdo, Koopa, Shy Guy, and Kamek say goodbye. Donkey Kong returns after six games, Bowser finally upgrades to playable, and Rosalina and Spike join as the newcomers.

Our spaces are a bit different this time, with a much wider variety making them act more like the items more than anything. We have: regular advance spaces, backward spaces, Boo spaces returning Boo to his old role, Boss Battle spaces, Bowser spaces, Bowser Jr. spaces, cannon spaces that let you fight back against Bowser, change spaces to rearrange player order, coin spaces, dash spaces, event spaces, gate spaces that you have to get through, heart spaces, lose coin spaces, lucky spaces, star spaces, minigame spaces, steal spaces that let you take stars, unlucky spaces, and warp spaces.

Our stages this time include: Mushroom Park, a standard Mario grassland level; Haunted Trail, a ghostly level; Whimsical Waters, an underwater level; Airship Central, set on an airship fleet; and Chaos Castle, a Bowser's Castle level. Much like the previous game, each of these comes with a boss and a mini boss which is basically just a really big enemy character. Mushroom Park has Petey Piranha and a giant Goomba, Haunted Trail has King Boo and a giant Sledge Bro, Whismical Waters has a giant Blooper (why not Gooper Blooper?) and a giant Cheep Chomp, Airship Central has Kamek and a giant Monty Mole, and Chaos Castle has Bowser or Dry Bowser and a giant Mechakoopa. Also most character amiibos will grant access to a small simple board loosely based on said character.

Across the game's 75 minigames, we see the characters: platforming, avoiding Cheep Cheeps, avoiding Peepas, balancing on a ball, golfing, avoiding spike balls, bouncing, eating fruit, counting Goombas, rolling dice, sliding on ice, matching up enemies, ground pounding, shooting Piranha Plants, inflating balloons, avoiding Fuzzies, swinging from vines, bobsledding, playing soccer, navigating a maze, playing volleyball, throwing Goombrats, stacking shapes, shooting Bullet Bills, drumming, blowing bubbles, playing Monkey in the Middle, springing, throwing bombs, playing cards, flying planes, and driving tanks. Bowser specifically has a few minigames during which he breathes fire, swings a hammer, butt bashes, climbs, and spins a roulette wheel.

Mario Sports Superstars

 MARIO SPORTS SUPERSTARS

Now, going off the name, you'd think this game would be a sequel to Mario Sports Mix, maybe with more sports on top of the four already featured, maybe more Mario and Final Fantasy/Square Enix characters, so on. You would be wrong. In reality, it's more like a big combination game between all of the other Mario sports franchises. You know, the ones with sequels. You have tennis, golf, baseball, soccer/football, and . . . horse racing? Where you have to raise and train your own horse? Um . . . okay. I'm not sure where that one came from, but I guess I'm not complaining. Each sport plays pretty much the way each sport was played in the series proper, with special attacks and other fantastical elements that you would have come to expect from each. The horse racing, I guess, you could compare to Mario Kart, but much slower and generally more focused on avoiding or jumping over obstacles, as well as the simple raising and training mechanics within the pasture.

Our playable characters this time around include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Wario, Waluigi, Rosalina, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Boo, Bowser, and Bowser Jr., with Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach as unlockable. For the team sports like football and baseball, you also have a number of sidekicks to fill up the team. These include Toads, Koopas, Magikoopas, Shy Guys, Goombas, Hammer Bros, Spikes, and Boom Boom and Pom Pom as goalies.

Each sport has four different stages that they can be played on. Tennis has a Grass Court, Hard Court, Clay Court, and a Night Court, most of which should be pretty familiar to Mario Tennis players. Golf has Emerald Woods (a standard course), Gold Links (a rougher course), Crystal Beach (a beach), and Wild Valley (the toughest course). Baseball has a Country Field, Town Park, Big Field set in a city, and a Harbor Park. Football has a Village Stadium, City Stadium, Kingdom Stadium, and a Grand Stadium. Finally, horse racing has Green Farm (where you start out), Cobalt Lake (going around a lake), Yellow Leaves Hill (set during Autumn), and Sky Peak (a mountainous course).

That's about it. Most of the items are mostly just accessories, like the balls, baseball bats, golf clubs, tennis racquets, and clothes for the horse.

Here's what we've got so far:

Mario Tennis Aces

 MARIO TENNIS ACES

Today, let's cover the most recent game in the Tennis series, released for the Nintendo Switch. The game's biggest gimmick was the advertised story mode attached, but it's more of a "story mode" you tend to expect with games like this. The bare bones of a story and not much more. The tennis mechanics are pretty standard here, with all of your standard favorites like topspins, slices, flats, lobs, drop shots, star shots, and leap shots. We also have three special types of shots, including the trick shot, which slows down time to let you get to the ball faster; the zone shot, that lets you pivot your aim on a point to get a more accurate shot; and the special shot, a special move unique to each character.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Boo all return in the base game, with Spike and Chain Chomp added as the big newcomers (honestly though, Chain Chomp with a racquet in its mouth is adorable). DLC characters came later, with Koopa, Diddy Kong, Birdo, Paratroopa, Shy Guy, Petey Piranha, Luma, and Dry Bowser returning, and Blooper, Boom Boom, Pauline, Kamek (EEEEEEE!), Dry Bones, and Fire Piranha Plant as full on newcomers.

As mentioned before, each has a special shot linked to them, mostly based on something connected with them. Mario wall jumps to get a better shot, Luigi sends it through pipes, Wario uses a fart (Hey! it's actually a thing somewhere (after Brawl. Hmm . . . )), Waluigi is just fabulous I guess, Peach uses hearts, Daisy uses flowers, Rosalina uses stars, Toad uses other Toads, Toadette just kinda hops a bit, Bowser uses his fire breath, Bowser Jr. uses his Klown Kar's punching gloves, Boo uses illusions, Yoshi uses rainbows, Donkey Kong sends it into barrel cannons, Spike coughs up a giant spiked bar, Chain Chomp breaks off his chain, Koopa Troopa spins alot, Diddy swings around on vines, Birdo is lifted into the air, Paratroopa flies around in a spiral, Shy Guy uses balloons, Petey Piranha whips up a tornado, Luma uses stars, Boom Boom just kinda gets mad and spins, Pauline sings a bit of "Jump Up, Superstar," Kamek makes himself grow gigantic, Dry Bones uses bones, Fire Piranha Plant uses its fire, and Dry Bowser uses his fire breath too.

We mentioned before a story mode, which includes a new villain named Lucien and a disembodied voice named Aster. Lucien is mostly just a possessed tennis racket who can possess other people, so any time you fight him, you're just fighting the other characters. He can also summon up a tornado, and shield or summon orbs to reflect balls back at you. Not much to go on. Probably works best as an assist or final smash or something. We'll see. Aster is mostly just your tutorial.

Our main stages include Marina Stadium, which comes with a hard, clay, and grass version; Bask Ruins, a desert level and Lucien's home; Piranha Plant Forest, a jungle level; Mirage Mansion, a haunted level; Snowfall Mountain, a snow level; Savage Sea, a pirate ship level; and Inferno Island, a Bowser's Castle level.

That's pretty much it! Let's see what we've got!

Alex/Nina/Harry/Kate: serve, lob, top-spin, singles, doubles, slice, drop shot, flat shot, smash shot, charge shot, Banana, Mushroom, Lightning Bolt, Star, Green Shell, Red Shell, offensive special shot, defensive special shot, Chance Shots (fire flower, blooper, star, cheep cheep, bob-omb), Ultra Smash, Mega Battle, Trick Shot, Zone Shot, Special Shot

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

 MARIO TENNIS: ULTRA SMASH

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (not to be confused with Mario and Peach's favorite nighttime maneuver), is the seventh tennis game made for the Wii U. The game is very similar to Mario Tennis Open in terms of gameplay, which makes since considering they were more or less in the same console generation, with topspins, slices, flats, lobs, drop shots, simple shots, and leap shots all returning as always. The biggest new feature includes the Ultra Smash, a super move that is performed if a jump flat is used on a Chance Shot. Mega Battle also features as a new prominent mode, wherein Mega Mushrooms tend to appear on the court and make the characters gigantic frequently.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Boo, and Dry Bowser all return from previous games, while Rosalina (kicking out her Luma, I see), Toadette, and Sprixie Princess (fresh off Super Mario 3D World) become new players in the game. Goombas, Koopas, Shy Guys, Lakitus, Spikes, and Magikoopas all appear in the background, so, you know, they don't do much.

Our stages this time include a hard, clay, and grass court, alongside a carpet court, mushroom court, sand court, ice court, rebound court which changes the ball's direction according to which arrow it lands on, and the morph court that switches around the floors.

That's pretty much it! Here's what we've got so far!

Super Mario Series Roster, Updated

SUPER SMASH BROS. UNIVERSE
SUPER MARIO SERIES

Today, let's update our roster for the Super Mario Bros. series. Now, if you've been following this series, you may have noticed we had, um, quite a few newcomers this time around, enough to fill an entire roster on their own, you might say. Well, that's exactly what I did. The Mario RPGs brought in so many new and unique characters that I decided to create an entirely separate roster just for them, just like the Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario rosters. The Mario roster will still have a handful added, but most of them will appear on the other roster.

1. Mario
2. Fursuit Mario
3. F.L.U.D.D. Mario
4. Luigi
5. Vacuum Luigi
5e. Professor E. Gadd

Character Sheet: Rosalina & Luma (New Series)

ROSALINA & LUMA

Settle in, folks, we've got a lot of revisions to get through for this one. The "New" series featured most of the series favorites, almost all of which have been included here already and most of them brought at least something new to the table. In fact, we only have four new characters to include this time. They are:

1. Mario (Revision 4)
2. Luigi (Revision 3)
3. Koopa Troopa (Revision 3)
3e. Dry Bones (Revision 2)
4. Goomba (Revision 3)
5. Piranha Plant (Revision 3)
6. Boo (Revision 3)
8. Princess Peach (Revision 2)
9. Toad (Revision 2)
10. Yoshi (Revision 2)
11. Bowser (Revision 2)
13. Lakitu & Spinies (Revision 2)
14. Hammer Bro (Revision 2)
15. Chargin' Chuck (Revision 2)
16. Kamek (Name change, Revision 2)
20. The Koopalings (Revision 1)
22. Boom Boom (Revision 1)
25. Rosalina & Luma (Revision 1)
27. Bowser Jr. (Revision 1)
30. Blooper (Revision 1)
31. Monty Mole (Revision 1)
33. Petey Piranha (Revision 1)
11e. Dry Bowser
22e. Pom Pom
39. Fursuit Mario
40. Sprixie Princess

Today, we're going to talk a little about Rosalina and Luma. She only appear in one game this time, that being Super Mario 3D World as an unlockable character. As such, her moveset entirely consisted of everything the others could do, meaning: running and jumping as is standard, with the Fire Flower, Starman, Cat Suit, Double Cherry, Cannon, Flashlight, and Propeller Blocks, Tanooki Suit, Mega Mushroom, and Boomerang Flower. Most of these are already well represented in the series and none are uniquely her own. She also originated as the resident gimmick rep for Super Mario Galaxy, something that we probably shouldn't deviate away from, at least not too heavily, as that would defeat the point of her inclusion in the first place. That said, she is her own character, and it is all worth considering as a whole.

Let's see how it all plays out.

Standard B: Luma Shot
Yeah, still pretty important to her.

Side B: Star Bits
Of course, still a staple of the Galaxy series and herself and the Lumas as well.

Up B: Warpstar
Um, duh. Of course.

Down B: Gravitational Pull
Maybe could drift away here, it's not as essential, but . . . nothing from this game makes a better argument.

Final Smash: Comet Observatory
Yeah, gonna keep this one too. What can I say, her moveset mostly speaks for itself.

Entrance: Rosalina and Luma fly onto the stage as if launched from a Warpstar.

Taunts: Some of the Luma's bouncing around that they do, maybe feeding one a star bit or two, Rosalina laughing and holding the Luma, so on.

Next up: Let's update Bowser Jr. with his full-on Koopa Klown Kar this time.

Super Mario 3D World

SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD

Today, let's go over Super Mario 3D World, the last of this section of games under the "New" series. 3D World followed heavily after its predecessor 3D Land, though with a unique aesthetic to it that helped it stand out enough that it was included as its own layout in Super Mario Maker 2, though the game does seem to pay homage in many ways to Super Mario Bros. 2, with its four player options being the same, and the plot revolving around Bowser having captured a band of fairies. (I'll have more to say about said fairies later).

Our main playable characters include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Buckenberry (the blue Toad), with Rosalina being included as a fifth secret character upon completion of the base game. Captain Toad, our main red-spotted Toad, is also playable in certain sections which we soon found out was basically the equivalent of those episodes of TV shows that are stealth test pilots for other TV shows. This test pilot was successful as it spawned the creation of Toad's Treasure Tracker.

The four/five main game players all function the same way, gameplay wise, running and jumping and using all the basic Mario game mechanics, with the Starman, Fire Flower, Tanooki Suit, Boomerang Flower, Propeller Hat, and Mega Mushroom returning. The game also features the new power-ups including a new Cat Suit, which is basically the main Furry suit for this game, except that it lets you climb up wall with ease, as well as the Double Cherry, which spawns duplicates of the main characters, and a pair of blocks, one that shoots cannon blasts from its face and another with a flashlight. You can also skate around in a giant ice skate, but that's more an extension of Kuriboh's Shoe than anything. I suppose its also worth mentioning that Mario and Luigi are actually shown doing real plumber work in the game's opening cutscene. As for Captain Toad, really his whole mechanic is to simply walk around a maze, with no jumping or anything else attached, so not much yet.

Now, let's talk about the Sprixies. Did you ever have one of those characters that you had simply written off as never going to happen in a million years, only to start up an analysis of a game and said character has the nerve to go and make a really solid case for itself? I have. I'm not very happy about it. The Sprixies, the little fairies that act as Bowser's captives in this game, ahem, have little hammers and wrenches that they use to fix up pipes and other broken things, supply literally every power-up in the game as shown in the opening cutscene (meaning every unique item in the game can be attributed to them, including the collectible stamps), are also the only central characters of the game unique to this one meaning they can act as reference characters like Wart and Daisy before them, build a rocket ship, have a friendly pet dinosaur named Plessie that Mario can ride, I mean, even the bottle used to contain them can be attributed to them. They even have built-in color swaps. I ask you, how am I supposed to say no to all of that?

So, yes, I suppose the Sprixies get a yes for the roster. Oh, and Lumas and Rabbits crop up in this game. They don't do much, but they're here.

As for Bowser, he acts as our main villain, and fights our protagonists a few times. Most of his boss battles feature him driving a large car, from which he throws out soccer ball bombs and breathes fireballs that make patches of lava on the ground. He also gets a cat form which he uses to chase the heroes up a wall, claw at them, and break through said wall on multiple occasions. He also uses the cherry to multiply himself. And as mentioned before, he is also shown using a bottle to trap the Sprixies.

Boom Boom and Pom Pom act as recurring bosses once again, with Boom Boom swinging his fists, spinning like a tornado, and ricocheting around inside his shell, sometimes turning invisible. Pom Pom carries a shuriken this time, which she uses to create multiples of herself and teleport slightly. Five other bosses appear, including: the Hisstocrats, a pair of royal snakes with a bunch of servants carrying plates on their heads; Boss Brolder, a very large living boulder that can throw out lava; King Ka-Thunk, who clings to the corner of a frame and tries to slam down on Mario; Prince Bully, a silvery bully that tries charge enemies and gets knocked through a pipe to become cylindrical; and Motley Bossblob, a clownish Marx-looking enemy that attaches what looks like those metallic blobs from The Incredibles to make himself a giant and stomp around on stage.

Now, let's cover our enemies. Returning from previous games, we have Goombas (with cat versions), Koopa Troopas, Chargin' Chucks, Piranha Plants (with their large, elongated Creeper forms), Biddybuds, Stingbies, Magikoopas, Galoombas, Fuzzies, Fire/Boomerang Bros, snowman versions of Pokeys, Boos, Peepas, Cheep Cheeps, Porcupuffers, Fizzlits, Bullet Bills (with cat forms), Spinies, Bob-Ombs, Spikes (with spike bars now, instead of spike balls), Bullies, Coin Coffers, Ty Foos, Dry Bones, Bloopers, Octoombas, and Charvaarghs (Blaargs that leap from the lava) all returning. Man, some of these are a blast from the past.

Some of our new enemies include: Ant Troopers, who mainly just walk in a straight line and don't even really hurt you; Blocksteppers, who walk in formation and go crazy if you take out just one of their number; Brolders, living boulders; Conkdors, ostriches that think their those little drinking birds from people's desks; Flopters, little spinny helicopter things; Fuzzlers, the answer to "what would happen if you crossed a Fuzzy with a Wiggler?"; Hopchops, living springs that chase you; Madpoles, who just kinda swim; Rammerheads, hammerhead sharks that should probably get that looked at; Skipsqueaks, mice running on spinning wheels, some with spikes; Splorches, living lava balls that roll around a stage after you; Splounders, who bounce Plessie up; and Walleyes, who try to block you.

Each world has a theme, much like Super Mario 3D Land, but like 3D Land, that theme only occasionally matches up with the worlds within it. Basically, World 1 is a Grassland, World 2 is a Desert, World 3 is a Snowland, World 4 is a canyon/mountainous region, World 5 is a beach, World 6 is the sky, and World Castle is a Lava Land, but again the levels within often don't match up. There is also the final World Bowser, which seems to have a sort of carnival theme, then World Star where you encounter Rosalina, which has a space theme, and then World Mushroom, Flower, and Crown which are just post-game worlds with a random assortment of levels. And finally, we should consider the Captain Toad levels, which have their own unique design and mechanics to them.

Our new items include stamps, the Super Bell, which makes you a cat, the Double Cherry, and the two different kinds of blocks. Perhaps the teleportation boxes used in the game (crap, those can be attributed to Sprixies too, can't they?) could also present an interesting challenge as an item.

Character Sheet: Rosalina & Luma (Main 3D Games)

ROSALINA & LUMA

Now, let's move on to all newcomers to the roster, either by being introduced in these last five games, or by finally gaining enough source material to be upgraded to the status of playable character. In the end, my count is thirteen new characters, two of whom are echo fighters.

8e. Toadette
17e. King Boo
24. F.L.U.D.D. Mario
25. Rosalina & Luma
26. Cappy
27. Bowser Jr.
28. Shadow Mario
29. Pianta
30. Blooper
31. Monty Mole
32. Honeybee
33. Petey Piranha
34. The Broodals

Alright, today let's cover the space princess Rosalina and her army of Star Babies, the Lumas, made famous by the Super Mario Galaxy games. Now, while Rosalina herself doesn't really do much in the games, mostly acting as a tutorial NPC throughout the first game and having a cameo in the second, she is intrinsically linked with the Lumas, who provide much of the unique gimmick of these two games.

In the Galaxy games, Mario moves much as he does in other 3D games, but thanks to the Lumas, and by extension Rosalina, he can do so much more. The Lumas themselves can eat or spit star bits, and one of their most helpful moves is the ability to spit star bits from above at enemies, removing some potential threats. They also transform, turning into various objects such as pull stars, warp stars, planets, and bunnies, allowing Mario access to various items and means of reaching new areas. This can all be considered. Also, as we are talking about the Galaxy games, the strange effects surrounding gravity and physics in the game could also be considered, giving some credence to Rosalina's current Down B.

Here is the moveset I came up with, though it mostly sticks true to her Smash moveset, as the team did a really good job of fully representing everything I would have represented:

Standard B: Luma Shot
This one lets Rosalina summon a Luma or send it forward in order to function separately from her, the way they do in Super Smash Bros. Another option might be the spin Mario does frequently throughout the Galaxy games, though that also seems to have some elements of Gravitational Pull to it.

Side B: Star Bits
Luma spits a series of star bits at opponents, doing mild damage, reflecting their ability to shoot Star Bits from above in game.

Up B: Warpstar
Rosalina launches herself upward using a Warpstar, which frequently acted as the premier way to get around in the Mario Galaxy games, and functions perfectly within the world of Super Smash Bros.

Down B: Gravitational Pull
Rosalina spins and pulls things toward her, representing in many ways Mario's spin in the games that tends to pull things toward him, the gravitational effects rampant throughout the game, and even maybe the effect of the pull stars. It also serves to bring the Luma back toward Rosalina.

Final Smash: Comet Observatory
This is the only one I would change. Rather than holding a grand star over her head and having it shoot out stars, I would rather see the Comet Observatory start its engines and start spinning the way it does leading up to the final battle in Galaxy 1, before barreling through the stage and taking out opponents in its wake. This may conflict if the Comet Observatory is a stage, but I'm sticking with it.

Entrance: Rosalina and Luma fly onto the stage as if launched from a Warpstar.

Taunts: Some of the Luma's bouncing around that they do, maybe feeding one a star bit or two, Rosalina laughing and holding the Luma, so on.

Next up: Let's see what we can make of Mario's Odyssey companion, Cappy!
