Chuchu

CHUCHU

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 brought back the Animal Buddy gimmick, adding in three more buddies on top of the pre-existing three. The first of these was a small octopus that rode on Kirby’s head.

This is Chuchu. Most of her copy ability combinations made use of her tentacles and her squishy, stretchy body.

As a fighter, Chuchu will be a very slippery and quick little character with an erratic playstyle. Her moveset will pull from her various combos.

Likelihood rating: Probably not. There might be a non-Sakurai clause attached, since there does seem to be some bias there. I won’t be adding that for two reasons: A) I’d rather give the man the benefit of the doubt, and B) that would basically apply to all characters moving forward, so . . .

Chuchu

CHUCHU

Ocarina of Time proved a rampant success, perfectly cementing The Legend of Zelda’s place in the future of 3D gaming and prompting a quick sequel produced two years later with all the same graphics and engine and a lot of reused character models. This time, we saw Link, fresh off his Ocarina adventure, wandering the woods in search of Navi, only to be attacked by a possessed Skull Kid, chasing him to a new land called Termina, and getting turned into a Deku Scrub. As Link works to return to human form and stop whatever the Skull Kid is up to, he wanders out of Termina’s central city and onto a sprawling field where he encounters his first new enemy.

These are the Chuchus, amorphous blobs that act basically like your typical slime from Dragon Quest, with a few differences. Similar enemies have appeared throughout the series, including Zols, Gels, and Buzz Blobs, and I’m really not sure what the difference is besides their name. Either way, this was the first time Chuchus by that name appeared.

As fighters, they will be basic and weak for the most part, but will be able to take a hit well. Their moveset will pull from all of their various appearances and variants, which come in more varieties than you might expect.

Likelihood rating: Piranha Plant clause.

So, today, we cover the Chuchus, which are basically the Slimes of the Zelda world (see: Dragon Quest, That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime, so on). They are bland, mostly featureless blobs that don't particularly do much on the surface, but aren't totally without their abilities. Chuchus themselves first appeared in Majora's Mask around Termina Field, but similar creatures called Zols, Gels, and Buzz Blobs appeared all the way back in the original. I have no idea what the difference is.

Across the various games they appear in, they will generally pop up from the ground, hop at you in a small tackle, or sometimes drop from the ceiling. In some games, they had variants with elemental powers, such as sparking with electricity when someone gets too close, and in some games they would turn to stone if exposed to light. In some versions they can also split themselves into smaller Chus or combine into bigger ones.

Here's the moveset I came up with:

Standard B: Electrify

The Chuchu will surround itself in electricity for a second, zapping anyone who gets too close and stunning any attackers.

Side B: Split

The Chuchu will be able to split itself into three smaller Chus (maybe Zols) and then move around as a trio, or will combine back into one.

Up B: Chu Leap

Its most famous move being a basic leap, this makes sense to have the Chuchu simply charge itself for a second before leaping high into the air.

Down B: Petrify

It will turn to stone as if hit by sunlight. This will function in a similar way to Kirby's Stone ability.

Final Smash: Big Blob

Basically the giant Buzz Blob/Chuchu boss battle from Minish Cap (we're not there yet, but still). It will plop onto the stage and squish around, trapping fighters in its goo.

Entrance: It will pop out of the ground.

Taunts: Up, it will stick its head up into a more Buzz Blob-type look. Side, it will cough up a Chu Jelly. Down, it will melt into a puddle.

Thanks for reading! Next up, a certain living statue enemy.
