And now, we come to Generation 5, taking us away from the Japan-based regions and setting us in Unova, mostly based on New York City and some of the surrounding area. The games were also something of a soft reboot for the franchise, with a ton of new Pokemon and none of the old appearing until the post-game.

In this game, you play as Hilbert or Hilda, who act as your main protagonist. Professor Juniper is your professor this time around, with her father Cedric running around and popping up to help you here and there too. Your rivals this time are your two best friends: Cheren, a stuffy honors student type, and Bianca, a flighty scatterbrained character. Other important characters include Looker from the post-game, and Emmet and Ingo, two brothers who run the Battle Subway.

The gym leaders this time include: the waiter brothers Cilan, Chili, and Cress with the three starter types; Lenora, a museum curator who is Normal type instead of Rock for some reason; Burgh, a Bug-type artist; Elesa, an Electric-type model; Clay, a Ground-type oil baron; Skyla, a Flying-type pilot; Bricen, an Ice-type actor; and Drayden and Iris, the Dragon-type mayor of Opelucid and his protegee. Your Elite Four include Marshal (Fighting), Shauntal (Ghost), Grimsley (Dark), and Caitlin (Psychic), with Alder as your champion.

As for the villain team, you have Team Plasma, a group pushing the idea that humans should let their Pokemon go and not force them to battle but taking extreme measures to do so. Basically, they're like PETA but mixed with a cult. N is their leader, a mysterious boy with the power to speak to Pokemon, but the true mastermind is his father figure Ghetsis, who is manipulating N for his own ends. There's also a group of seven sages who serve Ghetsis, and a trio of ninjas called the Shadow Triad.

The various cities in Unova include Nuvema, Accumula, Striaton, Nacrene, Castelia, Nimbasa, Driftveil, Mistralton, Icirrus, Opelucid, Lacunosa, Undella, and Anville, as well as Black City or White Forest depending on the version you play. Notable landmarks include the Dreamyard, Pinwheel Forest, Desert Resort, Relic Castle, the Battle Subway, Chargestone Cave, Celestial Tower, Twist Mountain, Dragonspiral Tower, the Pokemon League, N's Castle, the Abyssal Ruins, and Unity Tower, as well as five bridges crossing back and forth between not-Manhattan island and the rest of the region.
