Character Sheet: The Ultra Beasts

NIHILEGO/BUZZWOLE/PHEROMOSA/XURKITREE/CELESTEELA/KARTANA/GUZZLORD/POIPOLE/NAGANADEL/STAKATAKA/BLACEPHALON

The Ultra Beasts are a new type of “Pokemon” also introduced in Gen VII, all coming from the Ultra Dimension that Lusamine and the Aether Foundation had ripped tears into, the Ultra Beasts emerging from them and wreaking havoc across Alola. Most of them are . . . weirder in concept than the average Pokemon, with heavy basis on both sci fi tropes and various invasive species.

First up is Nihilego, a jellyfish made entirely of glass, that has some aspect of mind-controlling aliens, like how it possesses Lusamine in the end.

Standard B: Power Gem

Side B: Acid Spray

Up B: Clear Smog

Down B: Wonder Room

Final Smash: Continental Crush

Next we have Buzzwole, a giant musclebound mosquito that drinks blood to help inflate its bulging muscles.

Standard B: Fell Stinger

Side B: Dynamic Punch

Up B: Vital Throw

Down B: Counter

Final Smash: All-Out Pummeling

After that is something of a partner Pokemon to Buzzwole, Pheromosa, a cockroach mixed with a femme fatale who uses pheromones to control others.

Standard B: Triple Kick

Side B: Lunge

Up B: High Jump Kick

Down B: Low Kick

Final Smash: Savage Spin-Out

Next is Xurkitree, a living bundle of electrical wires and glowing lightbulb-like attachments, that drains energy from any surrounding area.

Standard B: Thunder Punch

Side B: Power Whip

Up B: Magnet Rise

Down B: Shock Wave

Final Smash: Gigavolt Havoc

Fifth is Celesteela, a Pokemon with heavy influence pulled from the tale of Princess Kaguya, being shaped like a rocketship one would take to the moon, and made of bamboo, just like Kaguya was born from.

Standard B: Flash Cannon

Side B: Mega Drain

Up B: Heavy Slam

Down B: Iron Defense

Final Smash: Supersonic Skystrike

Sixth, we have Kartana, a small origami figure based on paper, but paper cut so thin it slices like steel.

Standard B: Leaf Blade

Side B: Fury Cutter

Up B: Aerial Ace

Down B: Synthesis

Final Smash: Corkscrew Crash

And finally, for the first segment of them, we have Guzzlord, a giant, all-devouring monster with a gaping mouth, based on the general concept of gluttony. It’s also the main reason everyone believed the original seven had some basis on the Seven Deadly Sins, with lots of theorizing about what the others represented (Pheromosa and Buzzwole the only other ones with clear correlations to Lust and Wrath respectively).

Standard B: Crunch

Side B: Dragon Rush

Up B: Body Slam

Down B: Belch

Final Smash: Black Hole Eclipse

Come Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we gained four more. First, we have the only Evolutionary line in the full set, being Poipole and Naganadel, being based on medical syringes mixed with dragons, and some amount of hornet inspiration as well.

Standard B: Venoshock > Dragon Pulse

Side B: Fell Stinger > Poison Jab

Up B: Charm > Air Cutter

Down B: Acid

Final Smash: Acid Downpour

After that, we have Stakataka, a giant walking structure made up of a thousand sentient bricks that all move together as one.

Standard B: Rock Blast

Side B: Rock Slide

Up B: Magnet Rise

Down B: Iron Defense

Final Smash: Continental Crush

And finally, we have Blacephalon, a silly festival clown-type Pokemon with a literal exploding firework for a head.

Standard B: Fire Blast

Side B: Shadow Ball

Up B: Mystical Fire

Down B: Mind Blown

Final Smash: Inferno Overdrive

Entrances would all be emerging from the Ultra Wormholes, taunts would be tied to their theming, but I’d want them to all have at least one “eerie spooky alien moment” in them. The Kirby hats would be Nihilego’s top, Buzzwole’s head as a hat, Pheromosa’s crown thing, Xurkitree’s wires, some of Celesteela’s bamboo hair/stuff, Kartana’s helmet flairs, Guzzlord’s mouth, Poipole and Naganadel’s head syringes, just made of Stakataka bricks, and Blacephalon’s exploding head as Kirby’s body. Karts would all be Ultra Ball themed, with each one’s most distinct move. For Spirit Battles, you could reasonably put them all on Aether Paradise, but you could also split them between Iki Town Plaza and Altar of the Sunne/Moone easily. Their victory screens would all be based on their themes, while losing screens would be fainting, or maybe their defeat scenes from the games. And the color swaps would be their mains and shinies, as well as other general colors. Nihilego would probably have its possessed Lusamine form too.

Thanks for reading! Next up, let’s cover the standalone Legendaries of the generation. First, Necrozma takes control!
